Frederick R. Schmitt,
Boy Scout leader
Frederick Robert Schmitt, U.S. Navy retired, 80, died peacefully at Lewes Convalescent Center Wednesday, May 30, 2007, with his wife by his side. Born in South Amboy, N.J. Nov. 9, 1926, he is preceded in death by his mother, Helen Victoria Van Zandt Schmitt; father, William Henry Joseph Schmitt; brother, William “Willie” Schmitt; and sister, Catherine “Aunt Catherine” Weiss.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Rosalie Porter Schmitt of Lewes; his two sons, Bruce Frederick Schmitt of Dunn, N.C., a physician assistant, and John Robert Schmitt of Lewes, a Sussex County paramedic; four grandchildren, Mark and Kevin of Clinton, N.C., Sophie and Sarah of Lewes; and many nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved.
Fred was a 30-year veteran of the Navy. A senior chief who served in World War II, Korea and Vietnam, he was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association and the American Legion Post 28. His military career was never far from his thoughts.
After retiring from the military, he worked in the Townsend, Inc. soybean plant, Millsboro, retiring after 12 years.
He was also a member of Redmen’s Lodge 37.
Always present for his sons, he was an active leader in the Boy Scouts of America. Due to his efforts, the family was awarded the Del-Mar-Va Council Sussex District scouting family of the year. He also helped both sons to become Eagle Scouts.
Fred was an avid NASCAR fan and a past member of the Sports Car Club of America. He enjoyed auto racing and attended the Delaware International Speedway with his sons regularly. His enjoyment of driving and racing his Austin-Healy 100 Le Mans is remembered by his family and friends.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, June 3, at the chapel of Melson Funeral Services on Long Neck Road in Millsboro, where friends may pay respects one hour before the service. Interment will be private at Bethel Methodist cemetery
in Lewes.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations in Fred’s memory to Conley’s United Methodist Church Building Fund, 22150 Robinsonville Road, Lewes, DE 19958.
John C. Holland,
Suburban retiree
John C. Holland Jr., 66, of Millsboro, formerly of Rehoboth Beach, passed away Sunday, May 27, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
He was born in Rehoboth Beach, son of the late John C. and Leora Edna Dutton Holland. He was a retired service man for Suburban Propane of Rehoboth Beach, and he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Stephen Holland; and nephew, Kenny Fillian.
He is survived by his loving wife, Linda Ellen Hearn Holland; a son, John C. Holland III of Millsboro; stepson, Jeffrey Marvel of Mardela Springs, Md.; stepdaughter, Tracey Hastings of Georgetown; twin sister, Janet Martin of Seaford; sisters, Sara Fillian of Vermont, Joan Banks of Milford; four stepgrandchildren, Brittany and Christopher Hastings, Stephanie and William Habas; six nephews, Eric Clifton of Seaford, Mark Banks of Milford, Ryan Banks of Salisbury, Md., Stanley, Ricky, and Doug Fillian of Vermont and New Hampshire; two nieces, Patty Fillian and Kae Page, both of Vermont.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Saturday June 2, at the Christ Evangelistic Church, 9802 Camp Road, just North of Laurel.

S. Elizabeth Hall,
retired beautician
S. Elizabeth Hall, 96, of Millsboro, died at home Tuesday, May 29, 2007.
Mrs. Hall was preceded in death by her husband Arville Hall in 1998.
She is survived by her daughter, Sallie Jane Clifton, and her husband Richard of Millsboro; three grandchildren, Clark Clifton, John Clifton and Beth Douglas, six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Hall was born June 1, 1910, to the late John W. and Hattie E. Gordy Hall. She retired as a self-employed beautician. She was a member of Grace U.M. Church in Millsboro since 1921, where she was the oldest member of the church. She taught Sunday school for several years. Mrs. Hall was a great grandmother who loved to babysit and feed all of her grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 2, at the Millsboro cemetery , State Street, Millsboro. The Rev. Rob Townsend will officiate.
The family asks that contributions be made to the Grace United Methodist Church, PO BOX 566, Millsboro, DE 19966.

Charles G. Davis,
long-time educator
Charles G. Davis, 75, of Bridgeville, died Monday, May 28, 2007, at Genesis Healthcare Center, Seaford, after a long illness.
Born in Pottsville, Pa., Charles was a longtime educator of the state of Delaware, retiring in 1986 while working as a supervisor of curriculum and instruction for the Woodbridge School District. He enjoyed a long career working as a teacher, principal, coach, reading supervisor and guidance counselor in the Millsboro, Selbyville, Greenwood and Bridgeville communities.
He served his country in the U.S Navy from 1951 to 1954 and in the U.S. Air Force from 1955 to 1957. He graduated from East Carolina University with a bachelor of science degree and completed two master’s degrees. He was a master Mason of Hiram Lodge 21, A.F. & A.M. in Seaford and Hope chapter 7, Royal Arch Masons, Georgetown. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Laurel, and the VFW Virgil Wilson Post in Seaford. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Bridgeville.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Marilyn Y. Davis; three children, Cynthia G. Davis, of Jupiter, Fla., Stephanie D. Perciful, and her husband Robert A. Perciful of Bridgeville and Charlene D. Hunsberger and her husband Thomas L. Hunsberger of Bridgeville; a brother, R. Jack Davis of Wilmington, N.C.; two grandchildren, Andrew Perciful and Elizabeth Perciful.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 2, at the Union United Methodist Church, 2 N. Laws St., Bridgeville, where friends may call at 10 a.m. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Union United Methodist Church, Bridgeville.
Mattie E. Vickers,
Sussex homemaker
Mattie E. Vickers, 77, of Selbyville, formerly of Millville, passed away in her home Monday, May 28, 2007.
She was born in Millville, daughter of the late, Elmer and Emma Banks West.
She was a homemaker.
Mattie was preceded in death by her husband, Preston W. Vickers Sr., in 1990.
She is survived by six children, Preston Vickers Jr. of Millsboro, Brenda Clendaniel of Georgetown, Diane Stancliff of Seaford, Wanda Banks of Georgetown, Danita Robinson of Ocean View, and Annette Scorah of Georgetown; two sisters, Agnes Melson of Georgetown and Pauline Powell of Selbyville; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held at the chapel of Melson Funeral Services in Frankford. Burial was in Dagsboro Redmens Memorial cemetery.
Starling Peacock Sr.,
retired truck driver
Starling Peacock Sr., 66, of Millsboro died Thursday, May 24, 2007, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
He was born in Aurora, N.C., son of the late Collie and Ruby Louise King Peacock.
He was a retired truck driver, retiring from William B. Street Inc. after more than 20 years of service. He was a member of New Holy Trinity Church of God in Christ and was a trustee of that church.
He was always there when someone was in trouble. When someone was in need he was on it. He was a real people person and loved to hunt, loved working outdoors and liked to watch wrestling on TV.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, James Henry and Frank Peacock.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Arinthia S. Peacock; a son, Starling Peacock Jr. and his wife, Jaime of Milford; eight daughters, Ruthynia A. Walker and her husband, Kenneth of Laurel, Louise V. Peacock, Tracy Taylor and her husband, Dexter, and Charlene Lewis and her husband, Rodney, all of Laurel, Starlene Mercer and her husband, Joseph of Dover, Kayana Peacock of Harrington, Ashley Peacock of Georgetown, and Samira Peacock of Millsboro; 10 sisters-in-law; a host of family and friends, nieces and nephews; and 19 grandchildren; a great-grandchild on the way; two god-children, Leslie Collins and Craig Stanley; and his faithful canine companion, Dipstick.
Services were held at the New Holy Trinity Church of God in Christ, Millsboro. Interment was in St. John Second Baptist Church cemetery.
Anna M. Stokes,
retired from Beebe
Anna M. Smith Stokes, 93, of Lewes, departed this life Wednesday, May 16, 2007, at Lewes Convalescent Center. She was laid to rest in the Henlopen Gardens Memorial Park with a graveside funeral service officiated by Pastor David Munro of the First Baptist Church of Lewes.
Anna was born in Hurlock, Md., Oct. 2, 1913. Before moving to Lewes she worked at the Canning Factory and the Hosiery Mill in Georgetown. Upon moving to Lewes, she worked at Beebe Medical Center as a nursing assistant until her retirement in 1984. She never drove a car and rode her bicycle everywhere.
You could usually see her at Lloyd’s IGA, getting her groceries or on the beach in Lewes enjoying the sun. She was a blessing to everyone who knew her and always had a smile and hearty laugh that was wonderfully contagious.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Minnie Krouse; a sister, Esther Stokes, brothers Woodrow and Alvin; a son, Richard; her first husband William “Bill” Smith Sr., in 1963; and a second husband, Linwood, who passed away in 1984.
She is survived by her sister, Agnes Bell of Robbin-Warner Air Force Base, Ga.; a stepdaughter, Frances McGee of Harbeson; her stepson, William “Roy” Smith and his wife Karen of Harrington; her granddaughter, Audrey Smith Martin and her husband Don of Milton; her grandsons, Charles Smith and his wife Cathy of Bear, Dane Smith and his wife Susan of Winston-Salem, N.C., Roger Smith and his wife Sherry of Millsboro; and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her dear friend of many years, Vicki Evans of Lewes.
Lawrence McLaughlin,

Lawrence Edward “Little Larry” McLaughlin, 29, of Lewes, died Saturday, May 26, 2007, in Falls Township, Bucks County, Pa.
“Little Larry” was born in Bristol Township, Bucks County, Pa., son of Lawrence Edward McLaughlin of Lewes and the late Debra (Miller) Hubert. He was a 1997 graduate of Pennbury High School in Fairless Hills, Pa. Larry had been employed as a transmission installer for the Cottman Transmission Co. in Trenton, N.J.
He loved to fish, enjoyed surfing, snowboarding and going to the beach. He enjoyed attending Punkin Chunkin events and was a member of the De-Terminator Punkin Chunkin team.
In addition to his father, Larry is also survived by four sisters: Mandy McLaughlin and Corrine Harpster, both of Lewes, and Chelsie Hubert and Ashley Hubert of Bensalem, Pa.; three brothers, Christopher Miller, Brian Harpster, and Craig Harpster, all of Lewes; his paternal grandmother, Gwen McLaughlin of Millsboro; his stepmother, Sandy McLaughlin of Lewes; his former stepmother, Diane Miller of Lewes; several uncles, aunts, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes, with interment in St. Peter’s cemetery , Lewes.
The family requests that flowers be omitted and contributions be made to the Lawrence “Little Larry” McLaughlin Fund, C/O Wilmington Trust Bank, Lewes, DE 19958 to help defray the funeral expenses.
Norma Hellams,

Norma Shirley (Johnson) Hellams, 64, of Lewes, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 26, 2007, at her residence, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born Oct. 12, 1942 in Wilmington, daughter of the late Norman F. Johnson and Audrey P. (Gibason) Johnson of Lewes.
Mrs. Hellams had been employed for 20 years as an administrative assistant with Cokesbury Village in Hockessin. Mrs. Hellams and her husband moved to Lewes in 2000; they were high school sweethearts. She enjoyed fishing, playing the slots and bingo.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband of 46 years, Daniel M. Hellams; two sons, Jeffrey Hellams and his wife Ruth of California and Douglas Hellams of South Carolina; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, June 1, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes. Funeral services will be private.

Richard C. Johnson,

Richard C. Johnson, 60, of near Georgetown, died Saturday, May 26, 2007, in Milford.
Mr. Johnson was born on July 5, 1946, to the late Clarence and Doris Hitchens Johnson Jr.
Mr. Johnson was an auto mechanic for many years and he also formed and maintained a lawncare business. Richard loved to tinker on mechanical things and always helped people repair things.
He was a quiet person that loved horses, the outdoors, and he was very friendly.
Richard was a mechanic and crew member for the Springfield Racing Team and he also attended the St. Johns United Methodist Church at Springfield Crossroads.
He is survived by his daughter Rebecca; four brothers, Robert C. Johnson, Joseph L Johnson, Clarence Johnson III, and Theodore N. Johnson, two sisters, Irene A. Rust and Barbara A. Allen; and one grandchild.
Services will be at noon, Friday, June 1, at the St Johns United Methodist Church, SR 30, Springfield Crossroads, near Georgetown, where friends may call after 10 a.m.
The Rev. Ron Schatz will officiate. Interment will be in St. John’s cemetery , adjoining the church.
