Amos M. Walls Jr.,

Amos M. Walls Jr., 81, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 21, 2007, surrounded by his family at Heartland Hospice House in Pike Creek.
Amos was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on Dec. 18, 1925, son of the late Amos M. Walls, Sr. and Maude Ella Lynch Walls.
A proud U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he served as a Fireman First Class aboard the USS Alfred A. Cunningham and was awarded the Pacific Theater Ribbon (with one star), the American Theater Ribbon and the World War II Victory Medal.
After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Amos worked for his father’s roofing company until leaving to take a position as a burner service mechanic with Exxon in Wilmington. Following his retirement from Exxon in 1978, he worked for Schlosser Plumbing & Heating, Crouse Oil, and Newark Lumber Company. After relocating to Lewes, he worked for R & R Bait & Tackle until it closed and Arby’s Restaurant in Lewes until April of this year.
A recent convert to Catholicism who was baptized into the Catholic Church in 2006, Amos held the distinction of being the oldest catechumen in the Diocese of Wilmington. He was an active parishioner of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic Church in Lewes, where he served as an usher and continued to participate in the RCIA program assisting other new church members.
He was a member of Msgr. Francis J. Desmond Council #13348 Knights of Columbus and the Lion’s Club, both located in Lewes. Amos enjoyed life immensely and was loved by many, including his dog, Peanut. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed boating, gardening and cooking. He especially loved cooking for his family and friends and did so up to two weeks prior to his death.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death in 2003 by his beloved wife of 55 years, Dolores Faye Flowers Walls; and by five siblings, Bill Walls, Victor Walls, George Walls, Maude “Sissy” Walls and Howard Walls. He is survived by his four devoted daughters, Linda Pitrizzi (Michael) of Milton, Gwen DelCoglin (Wayne) of New Castle, Faye Townsend (Jay) of South Lake, Texas and Tracie Reinhart (Aaron) of Dover; six siblings, Lewis “Butch” Walls, John Walls, James Walls, Anna Mae Lewis, Hazel Birney and Ruth Ann Roberts; 11 grandchildren, Michael Gallagher, Kristin Gallagher, Stephanie Tomko, Nathan DelCoglin, Jennifer Pollard, Ben Townsend, Elise Townsend, AJ Reinhart, Amanda Reinhart, Tyler Reinhart and Samantha Reinhart; eight great-grandchildren, Sarah Gallagher, Meghan Tomko, Sabrina DelCoglin, Daniel DelCoglin, Zachary Pollard, Brooke Pollard, Savanna Pollard and Randy Reilly; and a great-great grandson, Bryant DelCoglin.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 a.m., Friday, July 27, at St. Peter the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, Fifth and Harmony Streets, New Castle. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle.
Amos’s daughters wish to express their gratitude to the staff of Delaware Hospice and the staff of Heartland Hospice House for the loving care and dignity given to their father during these last two weeks and for the care and compassion extended to his family.

Otha Howard “Buddy” Furniss Jr., 52, of Lewes, died of cancer surrounded by his family on Sunday, July 22, 2007, at home.
Buddy was born in Lewes, the son of Otha Howard Furniss Sr. of Lewes and the late Betty Cooper Furniss.
He attended Cape Henlopen High School and later worked as a handyman.
In addition to his father, he is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Jeany and Sam Argo of Milton; a brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Connie Furniss of Lewes; nieces and nephews, Dale Furniss Street, Travis Furniss, Kyle Furniss, Amy Jones and her husband Finley Jones III and Stefani Larson and her husband Chip Larson; and great-nephews, Finley Jones IV and Isaih Street Williams.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, July 25, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call after 1 p.m. Burial will be in Henlopen Memorial Park, Milton.
Beverly Ann Tikiob,
U.S. Army recruiter
Beverly Ann Tikiob, 46, of Lincoln, died Sunday, July 22, 2007 in The Milford Center, Genesis Healthcare.
Ms. Tikiob was born in Lewes, the daughter of the late William Edward and Louise Ann Veasey Shufelt. She graduated from Cape Henlopen High School, in 1979 and continued her education at Delaware Technical and Community College.
She then entered the U. S. Army and served for more than 19 years, retiring in 2005 as a recuiter. She served during Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom. She was a member of Eagles Nest Church, Milton. She loved to play bingo, go hiking on the Shenadoah Mountains trails and taking care of her pride and joy, her dogs “Tater,” a Golden Retriever, and “Kahlua,” a Boxer.
She is survived by two sons, Chris M. Kneipp and his fiancee’ Anne K. Hopkins of Lincoln and Brian E. Kneipp, of Lewes; a sister, Cindy L. Shufelt, of Lewes; two brothers William L. Shufelt of Ellendale and Robert E. Shufelt and his wife Stephanie of Lincoln; four nieces, Jennifer Shufelt, Amanda Shufelt, Haley Shufelt and Tylar Shufelt; and her two loving companions, her dogs, Tater and Kahlua.
At the family’s request, services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Alfred W. Allen, 64, of Lewes, passed away Monday, July 23, 2007, at Harbor Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Lewes.
Mr. Allen was born on May 1, 1943 in Wilmington.
Mr. Allen had been employed as a sheet metal worker in the sheet metal fabricating business. Mr. Allen served in the U.S. Navy and was a member of American Legion Post 28, Oak Orchard. He loved fishing and greatly enjoyed being with his fiance and her family.
In addition to his mother, Mr. Allen is survived by four sons; one daughter; three grandchildren; two sisters; and a brother, all of Delaware. He is also survived by his fiance, Jean M. Techentine of Lewes; her children and grandchildren, Diana Vansant and her husband Tony, and their children Shane and Ashley Vansant all of Townsend; Travis Techentine and his wife Jennifer, and their children Leif, Wyatt and Trey all of Newark; and Damien Techentine and his daughter Tessa, both of Lewes.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, July 31, in the Chapel at Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery , 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.

Norman Howett Jr.,

Norman “Norm” L. Howett Jr., 81, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away Monday, July 23, 2007, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md.
He was born May 26, 1926 in Stanton, son of the late Norman L. Howett Sr. and Natalie I. Powell Howett.
A World War II veteran, he served as a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army. After the war, he began an 18-year career with All American Engineering as an electronics expert. In 1972, Norm decided that the hectic life of upstate Delaware was not for him so he moved his family to Sussex County where he formed Indian River Enterprises, Inc. After more than 20 years of boat rentals and a tackle shop, Norm finished his working career managing computer systems at Old Inlet Bait and Tackle.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, James Howett and his sister, Beverly Howett.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Annabelle L. Morris Howett; three sons and eight grandchildren, Norman “Butch” and his wife Michelle of New Castle, and their children, Kimberly, Elizabeth and Aaron, and Stacey and her husband Lester; Jeffrey of Rehoboth Beach, and his children, Brett and Ryan; and David and his wife Judy of Dagsboro, and their children, Kevin and Kristin and her husband Daniel.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, July 30, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may call one hour prior to the services. Burial will follow at 1 p.m., at Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery , 26669 Patriots Way, Millsboro.

Margaret Alberta Stumpf Garvine, 92, of Wilmington Manor died Tuesday, July 24, 2007.
Mrs. Garvine was a homemaker and a member of Asbury United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Garvine was preceded in death in 2000 by her husband of 65 years, Elmer Garvine.
She is survived by her sons, Harvey L. Garvine and his wife, Shirley of New Castle, and James E. Garvine and his wife, Debra of New Castle; daughters, Jean M. Powell and her husband, Donald of Millsboro, Evelyn M. Claveloux and her husband, Richard of Wilmington and Judith Overstreet and her husband, James of Bedford, Va.; 13 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Friday, July 27, in the chapel at Gracelawn Memorial Park, N. DuPont Highway, New Castle where visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in the adjoining Memorial Park.

Chester Joseph Walls,

Chester Joseph Walls, 88, of Georgetown, died Friday, July 20, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
He was born in Fairmount and worked most of his career as a carpenter with Briggs Construction. He was an avid “jack of all trades” who loved to tinker and repair things. He loved people and was a quiet man who spent his time trying to serve and please others. He loved animals. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Laurel.
Mr. Walls is survived by his wife of 67 years, Margaret Effie Downs Walls; 16 nieces and nephews; and many, many friends and neighbors.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, July 25, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call two hours prior, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Interment will be in St. John’s Church cemetery . The Rev. Fred Duncan will officiate.

Richard H. Lester Sr.,

Richard H. Lester Sr., 84, of Middletown, died suddenly on Wednesday, July 18, 2007, at Christiana Hospital.
Mr. Lester was born in St. Georges on March 8, 1923, and was a 1942 graduate of William Penn High School. A respected and successful farmer for 55 years, he was a partner in his family’s agricultural business, CN Lester and Sons (later Lester Brothers) for 28 years. He later owned and operated several farms in the St. Georges area until his retirement. His family also operated the St. Georges Canning Co., which Mr. Lester’s father originally bought in 1921. Well known for his expertise as an agriculturalist, Mr. Lester was associated with the Delaware branch of the United States Department of Agriculture in the Agriculture Stabilization Conservation Service (ASCS) for 13 years, serving as chairman of the ASCS Committee for five years and as executive director of the ASCS for eight years.
Among his other professional affiliations, he was a member of the Grange for 40 years and a member of Agway Inc. for 30 years. A leader in his community, Mr. Lester was politically active at both the state and federal level. Locally, he was a member of the Delaware City Lions Club for 30 years, serving as president from 1979 to 1980. He was a Melvin Jones Fellow and a past chairman and life member of the Sight and Hearing Committee. He was a member of Jackson Lodge No. 19 A.F. & A.M. for 55 years, a member of St. Georges United Methodist Church and a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church in Delaware City, where he had served on the board of directors. From 1968 to 1973, he served on the New Castle Gunning Bedford School Board. A gifted athlete from his youth, Mr. Lester enjoyed many sports throughout his life, including baseball, football and golf.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Claude N. Lester and Eleanor Hance Lester; and two brothers, Claude E. “Cobby” Lester and Earl J. Lester. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Nedra F. Hickman Lester; three sons, Richard “Dick” H. Lester Jr. of Wyoming, Jaymes “Jay” B. Lester and wife Deborah of Middletown, and Gordon B. Lester and wife Lou Ann of Bear; stepson, James K. Murphy Jr. and wife June of Lewes; sister-in-law, Helen Lester, wife of the late Claude, of Georgetown; seven grandsons, Todd Lester and wife Kristi, Christopher Lester and wife Meghan, Paul Lester and wife Jacqui, Ryan Lester, Kyle Lester, Scott Lester and Craig Lester; two stepgrandsons, James Murphy and Kevin Murphy and wife Tabitha; and four great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, July 24, in the chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. Interment will follow in the adjoining memorial park.

Michael V. Chupek,

Michael V. Chupek, 80, of Denton, Md., died Sunday, July 22, 2007, in The Pines Genesis in Easton, Md. Born in Somerset County, Pa., on Dec. 18, 1926, Mr. Chupek was the son of the late John and Annie Dobosh Chupek.
His wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Chupek, died Nov. 12, 2005.
Mr. Chupek had moved to Denton from Laurel, Md., in 1967. He was the purchasing agent and general manager of the Electro-Therm Co. in Denton. Mr. Chupek was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was past commander of Caroline American Legion Post 29. Mr. Chupek was also a past president of the Caroline Country Club. He was a member of the St. Elizabeth’s/St. Benedict’s Roman Catholic Church in Denton and Ridgely.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Chupek was preceded in death by one infant daughter, Mary Chupek; one grandson, Donnie Nagel; and three brothers, George T. Chupek, Edward J. Chupek and John Chupek.
He is survived by two daughters, Joan M. Nagel of Cape Coral, Fla., and Carol T. Schwartzkopf and her husband Pete of Rehoboth Beach; three sons, Michael J. Chupek of Hurlock, Md., Edward Chupek and his wife Betsy of Cambridge, Md., and John Chupek and his wife Sue of St. Michaels, Md.; 12 grandchildren, Brandi Townsend, Scott Townsend and his fiance Alex Russo, Stacy Schwartzkopf, Scott Schwartzkopf, Lisa Nagel and her partner Mindy Harding, David Chupek, Nicholas Chupek, Brian Chupek, Michael Chupek, Hank Chupek, Sienna Chupek and Sequoia Chupek; and two great-grandchildren, Ethan Nagel and Oliver Townsend.
A funeral service will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 25, at Moore Funeral Home P.A., 12 S. Second St. in Denton, where friends may call one hour prior to service. The interment will be private.
