Mildred M. Davis Lloyd,
talented homemaker
Mildred M. Davis Lloyd, 88, of Millsboro, formerly of Newark, was called home to be with the Lord Sunday, Aug. 19, 2007, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford.
Born in Pikeville, Ky., on July 2, 1919, Mrs. Lloyd was the youngest of 13 children born to the late Thomas Hawkins Robinson and Mary Elizabeth Thornsbury Robinson. She was a talented homemaker throughout her life and was also employed with the Department of Housing and Residence Life at the University of Delaware, where she retired in 1981. In her leisure hours, she greatly enjoyed reading books and being entertained by her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Lloyd was the true center of her family and was deeply loved and cherished by everyone. She will be sadly missed not only by her family, but also by her many dear friends and all those who were fortunate to have known her.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Lloyd was preceded in death by her first husband, James P. Davis Sr.; her second husband, George Lloyd; a son-in-law, Benjamin D. Mullins; a grandson, Ronald G. Williams Jr.; a brother and 11 sisters. She is survived by eight children, Barbara J. Mullins of Newark, Helen K. Williams and her husband Ronald G. Sr. of Wilmington, Mary L. Mitchell, with whom she lived, James P. Davis Jr. of Newark, Billy R. Davis and his wife, Janis of Seaford, Caroletta S. Thompson and her husband John G. Sr. of Laurel, Elizabeth A. DuHadaway and her husband Larry Jr. of Millsboro, and Robert R. Davis of Newark; 25 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and three stepchildren.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the nurses and staff of Life Care at Lofland Park and of Nanticoke Memorial Hospital for their attentive and compassionate care of Mrs. Lloyd during her illness.
Funeral services were held Thursday, Aug. 23, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, Newark. Interment was in Gilpin Manor Memorial Park, Elkton.

Betty Estes Traumann,
former teacher
Betty Estes Traumann, 78, of Wilmington, passed away on Tuesday, Aug. 21, at home.
Born in Cascade, Va., Mrs. Traumann was the daughter of the late James Dabney and Bettie Starling Estes. A graduate of Hollins College in Roanoke, Va., she taught science and math at Connecticut College in Storrs, Conn., and then taught at Chatham Hall boarding school in Chatham, Va., before settling in Wilmington, where she was employed by the DuPont Co. Mrs. Traumann was an active member and deacon of Westminster Presbyterian Church, where she and her late husband, Klaus, were married in 1958. She was a member of the board of trustees of the Children’s Beach House Inc. of Lewes, and she was active in the Gordon Heights Garden Club, the Occidentals Club and the Wilmington-area Hollins Club, as well as a frequent student at the Academy of Lifelong Learning of the University of Delaware. Mrs. Traumann loved to walk and could often be found strolling in the gardens at Winterthur or at Brandywine Creek State Park and Ashland Nature Center.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Frank Marsden of Atlanta, Ga.; her son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Pam of Lansdowne, Pa.; her grandsons, Thomas and Patrick Marsden of Atlanta; and her sister and brother-in-law, Drewry and Frank Logan of Hanover, N.H.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 1, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Pennsylvania Ave. and Rodney Street, Wilmington.

Lawrence F. Conlin Jr.,
retired dentist
Dr. Lawrence F. Conlin Jr., 84, of Wilmington, passed away Aug. 19, 2007, following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
In his final days, he was surrounded by his loving family and the caring staff of Rockland Place and Compassionate Care Hospice. Larry was born and raised in Wilmington and attended Sacred Heart grade school and P.S. DuPont High School. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was assigned to the 2nd Division of the U.S. Marine Corps as a Navy corpsman pharmacist’s first mate. Larry served in the Pacific theatre and was an occupation troop in Nagasaki, Japan, after the second atomic bomb. To quote him: “Even though I saw no combat, I am proud of having served my country for 3 1/2 years. Those years had a profound effect on my life and my aspirations – all of which came true.” Following his military service, Dr. Conlin attended LaSalle University and received his dental degree from the University of Maryland, Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. He did a residency at the Emily P. Bissell Hospital before starting his private dental practice in North Wilmington. For over 40 years, Dr. Conlin served the needs of his dental patients with professional expertise and a gentle manner. Until his retirement in 1993, he was active in many professional organizations, including the American Dental Association and the Delaware State Dental Society. He was an exceptional athlete in his youth and passed his love of sports on to his children. Larry spent many years coaching their Little League teams; as they went on to play on various high school and college sports teams, he and his first wife, Eloise, rarely missed an event. He was a proud member of the Abadoubalis Club, and a longstanding parishioner of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church.
Dr. Conlin was predeceased by his first wife of 43 years, Eloise Calahan Conlin, and by his granddaughter, Kristen Reneé Conlin. He is survived by his second wife, Norma Davis Conlin of Wilmington; children, Mary Judge and Leo of Philadelphia, Pa., Dr. Karen Conlin and Denise Day of Kennett Square, Pa., Kevin Conlin and Linda of Wichita, Kan., Brian Conlin and Marilou of Lewes, and Daniel Conlin and Mary of Wilmington. In addition, he is survived by 11 grandchildren; two sisters, Jacqueline Corrigan of Dagsboro, and Dorothea Frugoli of Morris, Ala.; one brother, Richard Conlin Sr. of Avondale, Pa., and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation to the staff of Rockland Place and Compassionate Care Hospice for their kindness while Larry was infirmed.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 24, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 4701 Weldin Road, Wilmington. Burial will be private.

Evelyn M.M. Ashby,

Evelyn Marie Middaugh Ashby, 86, of Milton, passed away from this life on Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2007, in Lewes Convalescent Center and is safely home with her Savior following a courageous battle with cancer.
Mrs. Ashby was born on June 15, 1921, in St. Mary’s, W.Va., the oldest of eight children in a close-knit Methodist minister’s family.
She was a self-taught pianist and organist and she volunteered her instrumental and vocal musical talents in church throughout her life.
Mrs. Ashby attended Fairmont State Teachers College, receiving degrees in biology and home economics.
She married the love of her life, E. Mason Ashby in 1943, raised four sons and devoted herself to home, family and serving in the Methodist Church.
Through various moves, Mrs. Ashby has lived in Fairmont, W.Va., West Caldwell, N.J., McMurray, Pa., and Milton.
Her family will miss her sweet smile, sparkling blue eyes and her kind, soft-spoken nature.
She was preceded in death was her beloved husband of 63 years, E. Mason Ashby.
She is survived by her sons, Edgar Mason Ashby Jr. and his wife Patty of Des Moines, Iowa, William I. Ashby of Harbeson, Robert E. Ashby and his wife Sandy of Newark, and Richard A. Ashby of Milton; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and her seven brothers and sisters and their extended families.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, Aug. 24, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call one hour prior.
Interment will be in Odd Fellows cemetery , Milton.

Ava Raelin Uhlig,

Ava Raelin Uhlig passed away on Sunday, Aug. 12, 2007, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford. She was the daughter of Nicole Leone Kurtz and Paul Ernest Uhlig III.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by her maternal grandparents, Jeffrey and Linda Kurtz and her paternal grandparents, Paul and Barbara Ann Uhlig; an uncle, Shawn Uhlig; and a half-brother, Kenneth Uhlig.
All services are private. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Bridgeville.

Shirley L. Ritchie-Howell,

Shirley Lois Ritchie-Howell, 76, of Fort Myers, Fla., and formerly of Rehoboth Beach and Angola, passed away Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007.
Mrs. Ritchie-Howell was an avid bird watcher, traveler and musician playing the organ. She lived in the Fiji Islands for four years. She retired from Dupont Industries as an executive secretary. After retirement, she and her husband retired to Fort Myers in 2002.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Theodore Paul Ritchie. She is survived by her husband, Richard Benjamin Howell III; children, Jan M. Ritchie, Dixie A. Ritchie, Ted C. Ritchie, and Lou Ann Hollingsworth; a sister, Brenda Beck; and many granddogs.
There will be a private interment at Townsend cemetery
in Townsend.
Irene Kelso Sorbara,
retired school teacher
Irene Phillips Kelso Sorbara, 69, of Rehoboth Beach, passed away Sunday, Aug. 19, 2007, at Harbor Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center, Lewes. She was born on March 15, 1938 in Lewes, daughter of the late Hettie Mildred Moore Phillips and Clifford Futcher Phillips.
Mrs. Sorbara was an elementary school teacher for 30 years, all in the Rehoboth Beach Elementary School. She was a member of the Rehoboth Presbyterian Church of Midway. She was also a member of Unity Chapter 16, Order of the Eastern Star, where she served as Worthy Matron in 1985.
Mrs. Sorbara was predeceased by her first husband, Hugh Kelso Jr. in 1970 and by her second husband, Rosario Salvatore Sorbara in 2006. Survivors include her aunt, Margaret Moore of Rehoboth Beach; her uncle, Clifford Moore of Milford; several cousins and friends; and all the children she taught and loved dearly.
Funeral services will be held at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 24, with Rev. Ernie Olson and Rev. Keith Offen officiating. Burial will be at Epworth Methodist cemetery , Henlopen Avenue, Rehoboth Beach.
Frederick DaPrile,

Frederick DaPrile, 68, of Milton, and formerly of Clark, N.J. passed away Friday, Aug. 17, 2007 evening of complications due to a brain aneurysm. He was born and raised in Rahway, N.J. and resided in Clark for 37 years.
Mr. DaPrile was an avid Yankee fan and played softball throughout the years. He was an Air Force veteran and owned and operated DaPrile Ornamental Railings in Linden, N.J., for more than 30 years. He retired a few years back with his loving wife Arleen and enjoyed fishing, watching his grandchildren’s ball games, playing with their two dogs, reading, horseback riding, and of course, he loved watching the Yankees. He will be truly missed by all he has touched.
Mr. DaPrile was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Anna DaPrile and his brother Joseph DaPrile.
He was the loving and devoted husband of 46 years to Arleen DaPrile and the loving father of Sharon Vitella and Denise DaPrile. He also was the devoted grandfather of his three grandchildren, Devin Kai, Kira Ann and Timothy Kiv. He is survived also by his sister Joanne, brother-in-law George Ahapow, son-in-law David Vitella and future son-in-law Michael Ragoza.

Shari Lynn Lathbury,

Shari Lynn Lathbury, 37, of Laurel, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2007, in the University of Maryland Medical Center, Baltimore, Md. Shari was born in Milford on January 17, 1970, the daughter of Ronald and Sharon Lightcap Wootten. She attended Rehoboth Junior High School, where she was the school mascot. She graduated from Cape Henlopen High School, Lewes. She worked as a reservationist for Go Golf Travel in Ocean City, Md., for five years. Prior to that, she was the store manager for Shoe Show in Millsboro, and helped set up the Shoe Show store in Milford as well as many other stores throughout the Eastern Shore. Shari loved scrapbooking, loved to sing and had a beautiful voice. She also loved to write poetry in her spare time. She enjoyed listening to Janis Joplin and Melissa Etheridge. She was an avid cat lover.
Shari is survived by her husband of 2 1/2 years, Brian P. Lathbury; her mother, Sharon Lightcap Wootten of Milford; her father, Ronald Wootten of Millsboro; an uncle, Marvin Lightcap of Wilmington; an aunt, Gloria Coverdale of Milford; her father- and mother-in-law, Patrick and Jo Ann Lathbury of Laurel; three sisters-in-law, Cheryl Clifton of Millsboro, Patti Lathbury of Laurel, and Karen Elliott of Bridgeville; a special friend, Brenda Sharp of Milford; several nieces, nephews and cousins and her pride and joy, her cat Ed.
A celebration of Shari’s life will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 26, at the Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Ave., Milford.
Edwin A. Thomas Sr.,

Edwin A. Thomas Sr., 85, of Wilmington, gently passed peacefully into God’s loving arms at home Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007, surrounded by his loving wife, family and friends, having survived cancer since 1986.
Born in Cambridge, Md., Ed moved to Elsmere as a child and resided in that area through his life. A graduate of Conrad High School, he retired from the Delaware Department of Labor as a purchasing agent in 1984 after 22 years. Politically aware and active, Ed campaigned hard for causes he supported. He was instrumental in securing life insurance benefits for Delaware state employees and derived great satisfaction from volunteering with Suburban Youth Center and local candidates for public office. He was an active member of the Hamorton United Methodist Church and the Gordy Estate Civic Association. Ed enjoyed traveling, especially visiting casinos, and loved spending time in the evenings in front of his woodstove with his wife and friends.
With his twinkling blue eyes and smile for everyone, he will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 31 years, Patricia A. Thomas. “Mr. Ed” is also survived by his children, Edwin A. Thomas Jr. of Newark, Judy Anderson of Minnetonka, Minn., Mary Beth D’Amico of Lewes, and David Thomas of Monterey Park, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; an aunt, Becky Woodward of Wilmington; and many cousins.
The family deeply appreciates the kindness and care extended to Ed and Pat by all who cared for him including Dr. Charles Schneider and staff at Helen Graham Cancer Center, Christiana Hospital, Delaware Hospice and neighbors, friends and family.

Thomas C. Crawford,

Thomas “Tommy” Charles Crawford, 44, of Lewes, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007, as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident.
Mr. Crawford was born Jan. 29, 1963, in Norfolk, Va., the son of Thomas Rule and Frances Hayden Crawford. Tommy served in the U.S. Army during the Panama crisis. Mr. Crawford was a certified mechanic and worked for The Garage in Rehoboth Beach. Tommy was a member of American Legion Post 24 in Dagsboro. He also enjoyed fishing, working on his truck and his two pit bulls.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Tina Crawford; a son, Thomas Rule Crawford; a stepdaughter, Kirstie Cox; two stepsons, Danny Snyder and David Snyder; and two sisters, Catherine Crawford and Vickie Vaughan and her husband Robert of Millsboro. Tommy is also survived by an extended family and numerous friends.
A funeral service will be held at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 22, at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck Road, Millsboro, where friends and family may call after 5 p.m. Interment will be private.
Helen Louise Golden,

Helen Louise Golden, 80, of Rehoboth Beach, went peacefully to God’s heavenly home on Friday, Aug. 17, 2007.
She was born in Christiana, the daughter of the late Herbert W. and Ada Cleaves. Helen spent most of her 51 years of married life with her late husband, Joseph Golden, in Newport and Ocean City, Md. After his passing in 1995, until 2004 she lived full time in Ocean City. In 2004 Helen moved to the Brandywine Seaside Assisted Living Facility in Rehoboth. There she made many friends who shared her love of reminiscing and playing games, especially cards. Helen was a member of the Red Hat Club, the garden club and a former member of the Senior Citizen Center in Ocean City. She was formerly a member of Bethany Baptist Church in Newport, and more recently a member of Bethany United Methodist Church in West Ocean City, Md.
Besides her husband and parents, Helen was preceded in death by her sister, Virginia Sallee. She is survived by her children, Joanne Stokes and her husband Samuel of Penhook, Va., Patricia Schneider and her husband John of Lewes, Joseph Ronald Golden and his wife Brenda of West Ocean City, and Thomas Golden and his companion, Susie Steinman of Los Angeles, Calif.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Herbert “Junior” Cleaves and his wife Joanne of Stanton; a sister, Betty Ann Redding of Newport; two sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Wilson and Carolyn McCabe; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 21, at the Chapel at Gracelawn Memorial Park, N. DuPont Highway, New Castle, where visitation will begin at 1:15 p.m. Interment will be in the adjoining memorial park.

Desmond Jobe,

Desmond “Dez” Jobe, 49, of Rehoboth Beach, formerly of Arlington, Va., passed away Monday, Aug. 13, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Dez was born in Winchester, Va., son of Tyson H. Jobe of Stephens City, Va. and the late Joyce C. Huff Adams.
He moved to Delaware from Arlington about four years ago.
Dez was a waiter at Dos Locos in Rehoboth Beach.
He had a passion for living and spent his free time enjoying his friends.
You would rarely find Dez without his camera, waiting for the perfect shot.
His loves included cooking, music and graphic art.
Dez’s talents will be greatly missed. In addition to his mother, Joyce, who passed away in 2004, he was preceded in death by a brother, Corey Adams in 1990.
In addition to his father, he is survived by five siblings, Terry Emery of Charlottesville, Va., Heidi Russell and Charles Adams, both of Winchester, Tim Jobe of Culpeper, Va., and J.T. Jobe of Leesburg, Va.; and his companion, Brent Herd of Rehoboth Beach.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.
