Shirley Marie Spinella,
loved animals
Shirley Marie Spinella, 68, of Dover, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007, at home after a long, courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by her family and friends.
Shirley was born Oct. 27, 1938, in Greenville, Miss., to the late Jesse Lee Crenshaw and Mary Lee Bow Crenshaw. She was also preceded in death by her brother, James Paul Crenshaw.
She graduated from Greenville High School in Greenville, Miss., in 1956 and proudly graduated magna cum laude from Wesley College in Dover.
Shirley loved her family and friends.
Being a grandmother was one of her greatest enjoyments.
Shirley enjoyed her garden, feeding and watching the birds and squirrels in her backyard.
She loved animals of all kinds, especially her beloved cats, Bootsy and Rusty, and believed in and supported no-kill rescues of cats and dogs.
One of Shirley’s favorite pastimes was to play the slot machines.
She is survived by her husband of 30 years, Matthew “Skip” Spinella of Dover; her daughter, Jere Lynne Chaffee and grandson, Christopher Chaffee, both of Dover; her daughter, Laura Hirsh and her husband, Henry and grandson, Christian Marvel, all of Silver Springs, Md.; her son, Michael Spinella and his wife, Leslie and two granddaughters, Angela Spinella and Rachel Spinella, and a great-grandson, Sebastiano Spinella, all of Delaware City; her daughter, Tracy Hynes and her husband, Pat and grandchildren, Lindsay Hynes and Andrew Hynes, all of Lewes; her son, Scott Spinella and his wife, Cathy of Dover; her son, John Zatlokovicz Jr. and his wife, Debra and grandsons, John Zatlokovicz III, James Paul Zatlokovicz, all of Dover; her brother, Thomas J. Crenshaw and his wife, Faith of Broken Arrow, Okla.; her sister, Teresa Crenshaw and her husband, Jack Foley of Dover; and her sister-in-law, Jessica Smith and her husband, Charles of Laurel; and several loving nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held in Holy Cross Catholic Church, Dover, with interment in Holy Cross Catholic cemetery , Dover.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 Saint Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105; or to the Animal Humane Sanctuary, 409 Black Diamond Road, Smryna, DE 19977.
Richard James Greer,
retired salesman
Richard James “Dick” Greer, 86, of Georgetown, died Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007, at home.
Mr. Greer was born in Philadelphia, Pa., son of the late Stephen and Mary Grahm Greer.
He was a manager with the United Insurance Co. of America for 45 years, retiring in 1986.
He was a member of the President’s Club and Hall of Fame for leading the nation in insurance sales.
Mr. Greer was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard. His memberships included the Franklin Masonic Lodge 12 for 61 years, American Legion Post 28 in Millsboro, past commander of American Legion Post 8 of Georgetown and past member of the Bishopville (Md.) Elks Club.
He especially loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He also enjoyed hunting.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Steve Greer.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Anna Margaret Washington Greer; three children, Sara Johnson, Richard Jay Greer and his wife Diane, and Debra Hazzard, all of Georgetown; a sister, Jane Boyce of Millsboro; two brothers, Robert Greer of Salisbury, Md., and John Greer of Philadelphia; nine grandchildren, Michelle Gagnon, Aimee Gagnon, Richard Joshua Greer, Deana Cochran, James Richard Greer, George Johnson, Katherine Hazzard, Sara Hazzard and Wilson Hazzard; seven great-grandchildren, Lucas Gagnon, Nathan Gagnon, Cassidy Blevens, Carlie Gagnon, Amie Cochran, Braden Cochran and Hunter Greer; and his dog, Bill.
Funeral services were held Monday, Aug. 20, in Georgetown, with interment in Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery , Millsboro.

Beverly Anne Saunders,
former bank employee
Beverly Anne Saunders, 56, of Millsboro, formerly of Cambridge, Md., departed this life Sunday, Aug. 12, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes. She was born Nov. 30, 1950, in Cambridge, daughter of Goldie Hemphill and the late Chauncey Saunders, and was raised by the late Nathaniel and Gertrude Stewart.
Beverly was educated in the public schools of Dorchester County and was a 1968 graduate of Cambridge High School.
She was employed at M&T Bank, Millsboro, until her health started to fail. Beverly was a strong woman of the Lord and a member of Bay Shore Community Church, Millsboro.
Her special hobbies were going to church, reading the Bible, playing the piano at Tunnell Cancer Center and doing hair where she graduated from, Delmarva Beauty School, Salisbury, Md. In addition to her father and parents who reared her, Ms. Saunders was preceded in death by her brother, Leon Clash; and a sister, Belinda Hackett.
Ms. Saunders leaves to mourn her passing her daughters, Shannon Saunders of Baltimore, and Marsha Opher of Hurlock, Md.; a grandson, Josiah Opher; her ex-husband, Carl Opher Jr.; three sisters, Vernetta Hackett, Althea Saunders and Gia Saunders; a brother, Chauncey Saunders; three aunts, Dorine Johnson, Roslyn Carnage and Tavolia Carter; an uncle, Henry Carnage; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Services were held Saturday, Aug. 18, in Cambridge, with interment in Waugh Chapel cemetery.
Stephanie V. Mumford,
cosmetics manager
Stephanie Virginia Mumford, 44, of Millsboro, died Monday, Aug. 13, 2007, at home.
Stephanie graduated from Indian River High School in 1981. She was a cheerleader and in the band. She was employed as a cosmetics manager for the Georgetown Wal-Mart. She had the biggest smile and was a “Wal-Mart diva.” She was a community angel who looked out for everyone and helped them stay on the right path and have fun.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Adelle Lillard Mitchell Sr.
She is survived by her children, Nathan Mumford, Stanley Mumford and Shaunna Mumford; her brothers and sisters, Jerry Mumford, Roland Mumford, Earlest Mumford, Walter Mumford, William Hardy, Fred Mitchell Jr., Kenneth Mitchell, Bruce Mitchell, Kevin Mitchell, Marion Mitchell, Eric Mitchell, Mary Hallett, Barbara Mumford, Debra Morris, Janice Williams, Samantha Smith, Patricia Green and Pamela Mitchell; and three grandchildren, Princess Nye, Little Tim and Sean.
Services will be held at noon, Tuesday, Aug. 21, at Calvary Pentecostal Church Bishopville, Md., where friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon. Pastors Donald and Mary Alice Johnson will officiate.
Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial cemetery , Millsboro.
Earl Tuberson,
state planner
Earl Clarence Tuberson, 83, of Rehoboth Beach, died Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2007, at the Greater Southeast Community Hospital in Washington, D.C.
Born in Ridgway, Pa., he graduated from St. Mary’s High School, St. Mary’s, Pa., in 1942.
Earl served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and following that he attended and graduated from Penn State University.
He taught night school for a few years in Wilkes-Barre, Pa., where he met Ruth Ann Leonard. Following their marriage in 1954, they moved to Dallas, Texas, for several years and then moved to Wilmington, where Earl worked for the state of Delaware as a state planner. Upon retirement for the state Earl and Ruth moved in 1986 to White House Beach in Millsboro. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence J. and Edith Tuberson, and by his wife Ruth in 1996.
Survivors include two brothers, Robert J. Tuberson and his wife Griselda of Virginia Beach, Va., and William E. Tuberson Sr. and his wife Fern of Ridgway, Pa.; a sister, Alice M. Kieffer of Topeka, Kan.; and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 28, at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro.
Burial will be privately held at a later date in the Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery
South, Millsboro.
Walter ‘Corkey’ Phillips,
retired teacher
Walter Wise “Corkey” Phillips, 93, of Millsboro, passed away Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007, at Harbor Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Lewes.
Mr. Phillips was born March 17, 1914, in Frankford. He was the son of Walter and Allie May Phillips and an identical twin whose brother Kermit died at age 12. Walter graduated from Westchester State Teachers College in 1942. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran who served in the South Pacific. After the war, he was a teacher in Delaware and Maryland high schools. He was interested in history and designed the constitutional compass rose that was dedicated Dec. 7, 1988, in front of Legislative Hall in Dover.
He umpired baseball and officiated at basketball games in Delaware and was a lifetime member of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials. While on summer break from teaching, he worked at Kutscher’s Sports Academy in upstate New York. He was one of the original members of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Selbyville. He was a lifetime member of the Mason-Dixon VFW Post 7234. Walter was an avid horticulturalist and while he was a member of the American Holly Society, he discovered and registered several varieties of holly.
Mr. Phillips is survived by his wife, Jane; a son, Jon T. Phillips; a daughter Allison Agra and her husband, Eduardo; and grandchildren, Laura and Eric Agra. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 25, at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Millsboro.

Roland V. Cobb,
real estate broker
Roland V. Cobb, 85, of Rehoboth Beach, formerly of Jensen Beach, Fla., and Dagsboro, passed away Friday, Aug. 17, 2007, at Brandywine Assisted Living in Rehoboth Beach.
Mr. Cobb was born in Clarksville, son of the late Vernon and Mary Jane Rickards Cobb. Roland was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. He was a licensed real estate broker for more than 40 years and owned Cobb Real Estate Co. in Dagsboro.
Mr. Cobb served on the board of directors of the Delmarva Poultry Industry for 20 years and received a Distinguished Service Award for outstanding service to the poultry industry. Mr. Cobb also served as chairman on the board of trustees at Bethel Methodist Church in Dagsboro. He was a member of Doric Lodge 30 in Millville and was 32nd-degree Mason.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife Yvonne C. Cobb, June 13, 2007.
He is survived by a daughter, Suzanne Berry and her husband Bill of Lewes; a son, Gregory Cobb and his wife, Lyn of San Diego, Calif.; five grandchildren, Elizabeth Rusnak and her husband, Jason of Washington, D.C., Lisa Berry and her fiance, Conrad Bennett of Washington, D.C. , Jordan Cobb, Brennan Cobb and Andrea Cobb all of San Diego; and a sister, Florence Hall of Banner Elk, N.C.
A funeral service will be at 1 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 26, at the Frankford Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Thatcher Street, Frankford, where family and friends may call after noon. Interment will be held in Prince George’s cemetery , Dagsboro.

Henry A. Holden,

Henry A. Holden, 69, of Selbyville, died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2007, at home.
Henry loved horse racing and gardening. He was a very open and plain speaking person.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Holden Sr. and Lottie May DuPont Mills ; two daughters, Maryland Marie and Vernitha Holden; three sisters, Virginia May Long, Elizabeth Hall and Claire Wise.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Mary C. Holden; two sons, Henry Holden III and wife Louise of Millsboro, and Nathan Henry of Georgetown; three daughters, Ruby Marshall and husband Shamir of Millsboro, Marilyn Holden ,and fiance Ronald Gibbs of Selbyville, and Emma Gibbs and husband Larry Jr. of Harbeson. He is also survived by three grandchildren he raised, Ronald Holden, Katrina Holden , and Latoya Holden; and one nephew; and a host of cousins and friends.
He is also survived by three aunts, Mary Drummond, Hearlin DuPont and Calli Mae DuPont; 14 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday Aug. 18, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, where friends may call from noon to 1 p.m.

Roland W. Carroll IV,

Roland W. Carroll IV, 52, of Laurel passed away Sunday, Aug. 12, 2007, at his home.
Mr. Carroll was born in Wilmington, son of the late Roland W. III and Joan Parlier Carroll. He retired as a union pipe fitter, a member of Pipe Fitter Union of Seaford, Local 313.
A proud veteran of the U.S. National Guard, Mr. Carroll was a member of the American Legion Post 19 of Laurel.
He is survived by his ex-wife, Dawn Carroll; his sons, Shawn Carroll and his wife Heather, and Derek Carroll, all of Laurel; his brothers, Danny Carroll of Laurel, Steven Carroll of Milton, Kenny Carroll of Florida and Jeff Carroll of Milton; a sister, Debbie McGinness of Milton; an ex-mother-in-law, Bonita Wilmer of Laurel; a grandson, Jace Carroll of Laurel; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, Aug. 17, in the Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home, 700 West St., Laurel.

Eugenia Pakulis,

Eugenia (Slenys) Pakulis, 83, of Rehoboth Beach, died Saturday, Aug. 11, 2007, at Harbor Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Lewes.
Mrs. Pakulis was born in Kaunas, Lithuania.
She had been employed as an editor and translator for the U.S. government in Washington, D.C. She was fluent in five languages: Lithuanian, English, French, German and Russian.
She retired in 1982 and moved to Rehoboth Beach. She enjoyed reading and poetry.
Mrs. Pakulis was a very vivacious lady. She was known for her love of animals and for rescuing many stray cats.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Casimir Pakulis of Rehoboth Beach.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 17, at Epworth Methodist cemetery , Henlopen Avenue, Rehoboth Beach.
