Donald E. Monigle
restaurateur
Donald E. Monigle, 78 of Rehoboth Beach and Stuart, Fla., passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2007, at his home in Rehoboth Beach. His loving family and faithful dog, Monk, were with him.
After graduating from Christ Our King, Archmere Academy and the University of Delaware, Mr. Monigle served in the United States Air Force.
The DuPont Company in Wilmington employed him. In 1956, he was transferred to the company’s New York office. The Monigle family moved to Short Hills, N.J. where their children were raised and Mr. Monigle was active in the community. He assisted in various creative endeavors, particularly enjoying his work with the Millburn/Short Hills Fourth of July Committee and directing and producing “Fun Nights” at The Racquets Club along with his wife and close friends.
Frequent visits to Florida led the Monigles to settle on its East Coast for the winter months. Mr. Monigle’s lifelong passions for sailing, motor boating and saltwater fishing were further satisfied in Ft. Lauderdale and Stuart where the family set up seasonal homes. Mr. Monigle’s love of the Delaware beaches began when he vacationed there as a young boy. His family visited their cottage in Rehoboth Beach each year for vacation, and in 1979, they relocated from New Jersey to the beach where Mr. Monigle created a thriving restaurant business. The Waterfront and Coconuts Restaurants developed from his desire to lead an active and creative professional life on the edge of the Rehoboth Bay.
Following his retirement in 2000, Mr. Monigle continued to advise his family in the operation of the business and provide his vision to a variety of projects. He was a lifetime member of St. Edmond’s Catholic Church. Best known as a devoted husband, concerned father, proud grandfather and amused great grandfather, he will be forever missed.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Bader Monigle; his six children, Cindy Mault of St. Croix, Virgin Islands, Keith Monigle of Lewes, Lisa Giacco of Wilmington, Janie Timmerman of Steamboat Springs, Colo., Kevin Monigle and Kerry Monigle of Rehoboth Beach; 19 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and many cherished relatives and friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Edmond’s Church, King Charles and Laurel Streets, Rehoboth Beach at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 7. Visitation and interment will be held privately.

Barbara R. Spicer
Bank of NY retiree
Barbara R. Spicer, 73, of Elkton, Md., and formerly of Newark, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007, at Heartland Hospice House in Wilmington.
Mrs. Spicer was born in Chester, Pa. on Feb. 25, 1934 to the late Luther E. and Ada P. Hendricks and had been a mail clerk for the Bank of New York in Newark. Mrs. Spicer was a member of the Wesleyan Church of Newark for more than 40 years and had been an avid bingo player. She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Mrs. Spicer was preceded in death by her husband, Charles H. Spicer, Jr., who died in 1974; her brother, Earl and sisters, Nicki and Grace.
She is survived by her children, Charles H. Spicer III and his wife, Betty of Newark, Sandra L. Biggers of Elkton, Md. and Robert A. Spicer and his wife, Carlena of Newark; brother, Claude A. Hendricks and his wife, Pat of Claymont; sister, Anna Mae Morengo and her husband, Jesse of Lewes; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Aug. 7, at Gracelawn Memorial Park Chapel, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, Minquadale, New Castle, where friends may call after 10 am. Interment will follow in the adjoining memorial park.

Shirley A. Friend, 71, a lifelong resident of Lewes, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2007 at her home.
Mrs. Friend was born in Lewes on Feb. 24, 1936 to the late Thorton and Edith (Simpler) Hudson. She was a bookkeeper for Pep-Up in Georgetown.
Shirley loved cooking and being around her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Edward Hudson, Ken Hudson and Charles Hudson.
She is survived by her loving husband of 35 years, Colin C. Friend; two sons, George Hadder and his wife Tammy of Lewes and William Hadder of Lewes; a daughter Linda A. Hadder of Lewes; a brother Bill Hudson and his wife Edna of Milton; a granddaughter Amanda Rogers and her husband Ken of Georgetown; two grandsons, George K. Hadder, Jr and Jeremy Hadder of Lewes; a great-grandson Cole K. Rogers of Georgetown; former daughter-in-law Terry M. Brewster and her husband Howard of Milton and a special friend, Betty Melson of Georgetown.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday Aug. 9 at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck Rd., Millsboro, where friends and family may call Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m.
Interment will be held at Bethel Methodist cemetery

James Ernest Finney Sr.,
retired truck driver
James Ernest “Baby James” Finney Sr., 62, of Millsboro, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Mr. Finney was born in Millsboro, son of the late James Henry and Mary Harmon Finney.
He was a retired truck driver, having worked for Townsend’s for 25 years and S&R Distributors for 10 years. He was currently an employee of Stockley Center, on medical leave.
He was a loving man, a loving father, a loving grandfather and a loving friend. He was a wonderful singer and a member of Bible Church of Christ in Dagsboro.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Ethel Collins Finney; two sons, James E. Finney Jr. and his wife Celestine of Columbia, S.C. and Darrus Finney of Millsboro; three daughters, Delia Hall and her husband Timothy of Millsboro, Jacqueline Hudson and her husband William of Selbyville and F. Melody Edme of Boston, Mass.; two brothers, Robert Mannings of Dover and Simon Mannings of Millsboro; a sister, Joann Thompson o f Millsboro; a godson, Julian Coffee; and two special aunts, Jennie “Tinky” Hitchens and Blanche “Sickie” Miller; eight grandchildren, Timothy, Tempestt, William III, Mylez, Ashia, Jameelah, James III and Darneeka; a great-grandchild, Tyleia; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at noon, Wednesday, Aug. 8, at the Bible Church of Christ in Dagsboro. Friends are invited to a viewing from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 7, at Watson Funeral Home, 211 S. Washington Street, Millsboro, and one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Harmony United Methodist Church cemetery.

James B. Cunningham,
real estate developer
James Burl Cunningham, 64, of Rehoboth Beach, and Palm City, Fla., died suddenly on Friday, Aug. 3, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
He was born Sept. 19, 1942 in Morrilton, Ark., son of the late Archie Ray and Wanda Mae (Hill) Cunningham.
Mr. Cunningham worked in the real estate industry all of his adult life, primarily as a developer. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, Centennial Lodge 174 AF & AM, Upper Marlboro, Md. He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1960 and served his country for four years. After leaving the service he went to college, ultimately earning an MBA from the University of Maryland.
He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Sheryl J. (Marshall) Cunningham; his son, Jason B. Cunningham; his daughter, Angela B. Cunningham; a brother Sherman Cunningham; and half-siblings Cecil Warren, Dale Warren, and Linda McIntyre. He is survived also by a loving mother-in-law Ruth Marshall; and in-law family Becky and Ken Moser, Megan Moser, Allison Moser, and Courtney Moser. Many other relatives in Ohio, Arkansas, and California and in particular, close friends Jack and Lisa Daggett, mourn his passing, as well. He was adored by his dogs Addison, Mousse and Duncan.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 9, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be private. Masonic services will begin at 11:30 a.m.
A reception will follow from noon to 4 p.m., at the home of Jack and Lisa Daggett at Nine Alexander Court, Kings Creek Country Club, Rehoboth Beach.

Beatrice H. Thomas,

Beatrice H. Thomas, 90, of Lewes, and formerly of Delmar, died Friday, Aug. 3, 2007 at Harbor Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Lewes.
She was born July 10, 1917 in Wilmington, daughter of the late John and Lillian Hurd Heller.
Beatrice was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church in Salisbury. She began her nursing career as an LPN at the former Peninsula General Hospital in Salisbury and retired from Salisbury Nursing Home after many years of service. She loved her work in nursing and served as past president and vice president of the LPN Nurses Association. After retirement, Mrs. Thomas resided in Pine Bluff Village in Salisbury where she enjoyed time with her friends and neighbors. She was a wonderful cook and loved to sew and read.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Grace Hamblin and a grandchild.
She is survived by her loving family, three daughters, Yvonne “Bonnie” Balcerski and her husband, Ed of Millsboro, Beverly Wilson and her husband, Jimmie of Delmar, and Barbara Taylor and her husband, Seth of Palm City, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 8, at Short Funeral Home, 13 E. Grove Street, Delmar. Following the visitation, a Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Delmar. Interment will follow the services at Odd Fellows cemetery
in Smyrna.

Anna E. Bassett,

Anna E. “Nana” Bassett, 77, of Dagsboro, passed away on Thursday Aug. 2, 2007 at the Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Md.
She was born in Perkiomenville, Pa., daughter of the late, William and Margaret (Surgeoner) Phillips. She was a homemaker and antique dealer.
“Nana” loved raising children even though they were not her own and she loved nature and farm animals.
Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Vincent E. Bassett in 1997.
She is survived by a stepson, Gary Troike and his wife Kathy; two daughters, Melody A. Hudson and her husband Richard, Robin Lynn West and her husband Greg; five brothers, William Phillips, Robert Phillips, Harlin Phillips, Ronald Phillips, and Dennis Phillips; two sisters, Marea Olsen and Sharon Townsend; four grandchildren, Kim Frey, Chris Hudson, Laurier Binet and Kim Campbell; three great-grandchildren, Jordan Boesch, Katelyn Frey and Briar Rose Binet.
Services were held at the chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Frankford. Interment was in the Phillips Family cemetery
in Campbelltown, Md.

Edward Burke Fritz,
Sikorsky retiree
Edward Burke Fritz, 74, of Lewes, passed away peacefully at his residence on Thursday, Aug. 2, 2007, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born Jan. 10, 1933 in Philadelphia, Pa., son of the late Maurice and Marie W. (Fisher) Fritz.
Mr. Fritz was a graduate of Haverford Boys High School, class of 1951, Haverford, Pa. He also graduated with a bachelor of science degree in economics, class of 1958, from Franklin & Marshall College, Lancaster, Pa. He worked for 20 years with United Technologies Corporation, Connecticut Division of Pratt & Whitney, and with Sikorsky Aircraft retiring in 1989. He also served his country from 1954 to 1957 as a 1st Lieutenant with the 105th Bomber Squad Tactical Unit, USAF.
Mr. Fritz loved to garden, cook, play golf, and dine on French cuisine. He taught all his children to love the ocean.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Edward Fritz Jr., his daughter-in-law, Lucinda McKee and his sister-in-law, Mary Demato.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Mary Ann Fritz; three daughters, Karen Skarlatos and her husband Leo of Romania, Stephanie Fritz of Bishop, Calif., and Kathleen Fritz and her husband David Grigsby of Guilford, Conn.; four grandchildren, Christine McKee, Heather Fritz, Alessandra Skarlatos and Nikolas Skarlatos; a brother and sister-in-law: David and Mary O’Brien Fritz of Millsboro and a brother-in-law, William Sheridan Jr. of Pennsauken, N.J.

William E. Nickle,
community volunteer
Bill Nickle, 66, formerly of Willingboro, N.J., and last residing in Rehoboth Beach, passed away suddenly July 25, 2007, of complications relating to degenerative heart disease.
He was born Nov. 28, 1940. He graduated from The Haverford School, Haverford, Pa. in 1958 and from Duke University in North Carolina in 1962. In college, he was an accomplished dancer and choreographer in charge of nearly all major theatrical productions during his stay at Duke. He worked at Arthur Anderson for many years, but the onset of numerous major medical problems left him all but incapacitated. He turned his pain and misfortune into an uncanny ability to help others and gathered a legion of friends over the years.
An active participant as a Big Brother to HIV-AIDS victims, he was well respected and loved by many in his communities both in New Jersey and Delaware.
He will be missed by his brothers, David and his three sons, Eric, Dylan and Brian and his brother Norman and his daughter Merisa, his companion, Sean Quigley and by numerous close friends. He will also be missed by his adopted family, David and Helen Rogers, and their son, Eric Django and daughters, Cinnamon, Ariel and Adeline.
An informal memorial get-together is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 19, at his former residence in Willingboro, N.J. Arrangements by Short Funeral Services, Milton.
Vincent E. Fenick,
retired business owner
Vincent E. Fenick, 84, of Millsboro, died Tuesday, July 31, 2007, at home.
Mr. Fenick was born July 11, 1923 in Coaldale, Pa., to the late Vincent and Catherine Horack Fenick.
Mr. Fenick was the owner/operator of Mother Goose Dairyland in Leighton, Pa. for 12 years until he retired in 1986. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion. He and his wife loved to vacation by the water and their vacations always involved ships. He was a quiet and gentle man who was extremely devoted to his wife; they were inseparable.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathleen Fenick, in 1968.
Mr. Fenick is survived by his wife of 60 years, Virginia (Jean) Leininger Fenick, a son, John Fenick of Reading, Pa.; and a grandson, Shane Fenick.
Services were held at Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro, with burial scheduled for 1 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 7, at St. Catherine’s cemetery , Sea Girt, N.J.

Linda Lecates Haughey,
retired teacher
Linda Louise Lecates Haughey, 60, of Millsboro, died Tuesday, July 31, 2007, at home, surrounded by her family.
Linda was born June 28, 1947, in Salisbury, Md., daughter of the late Robert and Evelyn Beach Lecates.
She grew up in Milford and Newark, graduating from Newark High School with the class of 1965. She graduated from the University of Delaware in 1969 with a bachelor of science degree in biology and later completed her masters degree in biology education.
Her teaching career spanned 29-plus years. She taught middle school science at H.B. DuPont Middle School in Hockessin, Laurel Middle School and lastly at Milton Middle School, which she retired from in 2002.
Linda participated on many local and state education committees. She was honored to be a Christa McAuliffe Fellow and to be appointed to the governor’s task force on the use of technology in all education classrooms.
She was very proud of her husband, Bill, and their children’s accomplishments - daughter JB, an occupational therapist; daughter Shelby, a clinical research manager; and son Cameron, an environmental scientist.
One of Linda’s favorite pastimes was spending hours when she could at the beach, enjoying the tranquility and the sights and sounds of the seashore.
She bonded closely with her three sisters and their families and will be greatly missed by many friends and extended family.
Linda is survived by her loving husband of 38 years, William P. “Bill” Haughey Jr.; two daughters, Jacolyn “JB” Haughey of Millsboro, and Shelby Haughey and her husband Richard Miller of West Chester, Pa.; a son, William Cameron Haughey of Angola; three sisters and four brothers-in-law, Dolly and Edward Berwick of Milford, Jackie and Richard Jester of Dover, Debbie and Wade Johnson of Laurel and Randy Haughey of Daytona Beach, Fla.; her mother-in-law, Marian C. Van Es of Millsboro; her beautiful grandson, Kai Nicholas Haughey, son of Cameron Haughey and Brett Bearden; six nieces and nephews; and three great-nieces and great-nephews.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, at Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Ave., Milford, where friends may call any time after 11 a.m.
Burial will be private.
