Mr. Monte C. Banning, Jr., age 78, of Middletown, DE, died on Monday, March 20, 2006, at his home.
Born January 29, 1928 in Warren, OH, Mr. Banning was the son of the late Monte C. Banning, Sr. and Elberta Myers Banning. He proudly served his country in the US Army Air Corps during World War II and was honorably discharged in 1949.
A career pilot, Mr. Banning worked for Atlantic Aviation in New Castle for 32 years, where he often flew for the DuPont Company. He later piloted for Conoco for 1 year, before retiring in 1988.
Active in the Masonic order throughout his life, Mr. Banning was a member and past master of Lafayette Lodge #14 AF&AM, a member of the Delaware Consistory, a member of Nur Temple, and past president of the Masonic Hall Company on Market Street.
He was also a past governor of the flying fraternity known as the Quiet Birdsmen and had served as the treasurer of the Southern Alliance, a New Castle County civic organization. A certified master gardener, he served as an expert advisor for callers to the University of Delaware Horticulture Department.
Above all, Mr. Banning will be remembered as a devoted family man, who especially delighted in spending time with his beloved grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Barbara Penrod Banning; 4 children, Cynthia Hunt, of Bear, Pamela Banning, of Middletown, Sandra Leckie, and her husband, Alan, of New Castle, and Monte C. Banning III, and his wife, Kathleen, of Bear; brother, Robert Banning, and his wife, Anita, of VA; 3 sisters, Patricia Fisher, and her husband, James, of Warren, OH, Virginia Udall, and her husband, George, of Levittsburg, OH, and Katherine Heltzel, of AZ; 9 grandchildren, Lindsay Brown, of Middletown, Andrew Hunt, and his wife, Nicole, of Seattle, WA, Matthew Hunt, of Newark, Heather Leckie, Melissa Leckie and Sara Leckie, all of New Castle, Alan Leckie, and his wife, Nicole, stationed in HI, Jennifer Banning and Victoria Calloway, both of Bear; and great grandson, Dayson Hunt, of Seattle, WA.
A funeral service will be held at 8 pm on Thursday, March 23, 2006, at the SPICER-MULLIKIN FUNERAL HOME, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, where friends may call after 6 pm. A service of committal will be held at 10 am on Friday, March 24, 2006, in the chapel of Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.

Paul M. "Bud" Allen Age 69 of Felton, DE, died, March 21, 2006 at Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital.
Born in Sandtown, DE to the late Paul and Delema Allen. Mr. Allen worked for over 25 years for General Foods driving a tractor trailer. After retiring from General Foods, he drove a truck for Perry Butler Trucking. Mr. Allen enjoyed traveling the country and seeing the different parts of America. In his spare time, he loved to listen to Bluegrass music and watch NASCAR. His favorite NASCAR driver was Dale Earnhart Sr. Mr. Allen also liked to go shopping. He was a regular at Wal-Mart, and he also enjoyed browsing local flea markets. Mr. Allen was a member of the Camden-Wyoming Moose Lodge for the past 33 years.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Mariam Allen and a sister, Emogene Nichols.
He is survived by daughters, Susanne Keene of Harrington Melissa and husband, Donald Jr. Ziegler of Felton, Paula Mahaffey and husband, Michael of Magnolia; stepson, Frank and wife, Dorothy Bennett II of Dagsboro; grandchildren, Frank Bennett III, Stacey Allen, Casandra Keene, Warren Ziegler, Travis Ziegler; sisters, Olive and husband, Charles of Dover, Mary Ann Rodriquez of Roper, North Carolina; faithful Companion whom he loved to spoil, his dog Jingles

David R. Chaffinch, age 55, of Wilmington, DE died Friday, October 24, 2008. David worked for PNC Global Investment Services and was a technical consultant for Hardin and Associates. In his spare time he enjoyed remodeling, playing video poker, and watching sports, specifically hockey, baseball, and football. He was predeceased by his father, Lawrence. He is survived by his spouse, Janet Hodge; mother, Lavon Chaffinch; children, Nicole Long and her husband, Christopher, Kevin Chaffinch and his fiancée Megan Birdsall, Sean Hodge, and Brian Chaffinch; brothers, Lawrence E. George Fox, Jr. Age 77, of Wilmington, DE passed away on Wednesday, November 19, 2008 at his residence with his family by his side. George was a welder for 44 years at the former, Delaware Power & Light, where he retired in 1993. He was a Life Member of the Claymont Fire Company where he was a chief engineer. He was a fan of the Philadelphia Phillies and the San Francisco 49ers’. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; daughter, Peggy; siblings, Earl Rentz, John, Roy, Ralph and Wally Fox, Marie Moody, Mildred Fox, Betty Stewart, Barbara Baker and Margaret MacAbee; many cousins, nieces and nephews and his cat, Ruby. George was preceded in death by his brother, Harold. Mrs. Miriam Doneker Harrison died at Cokesbury Village in Hockessin, DE on Monday, December 1, 2008. Mrs. Harrison was born June 18, 1923 in Lykens, PA, daughter of the late George W. Doneker and Lottie H. Doneker. Mrs. Harrison served as a nurse in the U.S. Army Medical Corps during World War II, including a tour of duty in Italy. As a nurse anesthetist at Johns Hopkins Hospital she met her late husband, Dr. Lloyd B. Harrison, Jr., resulting in a marriage of 52 years before Dr. Harrison's death in 2006. Mrs. Harrison leaves to cherish her memory a brother, Dr. Thomas Doneker (and wife Bev Doneker) of Bethlehem, PA; six children: Susan D. Harrison of Tampa, FL; Catherine H. Taylor (and husband James D. Taylor) of Wilmington, DE; Amy H. Khawand (and husband Dr. Camille Khawand) of Salisbury, MD; John S. Harrison (and wife Sallie W. Harrison) of Winston-Salem, NC; Lloyd B. Harrison III (and wife Lynn S. Harrison) of Dunkirk, MD; and George D. Harrison (and Lisa Smith) of Chadds Ford, PA; and two grandchildren, William Lloyd Harrison of Charlotte, NC and Miss Jackie Khawand of Salisbury, MD. Mary Evans Billingsley Hood Age 87, died Saturday, November 8, 2008 at her winter home in Venice, Florida. She was born in Fairmont, WV to the late P.G. and Golda W. Billingsley. Mary graduated from Morgantown High School and West Virginia University, graduating in 1943 and marrying Jack Hood that same year. As part of the DuPont family, they moved from West Virginia to Washington, then on to Texas, Illinois, Wilmington, South Carolina and back to Wilmington, with a brief time in South Africa. Mary was a devoted mother and gracious homemaker, an active participant in her Church community, an avid bridge player, and a willing and able volunteer for the Junior Board of Wilmington Hospital. She was very active in Girl Scouts throughout her life, first as a participant and camp counselor, later as a Brownie, Junior and Senior Scout Leader, as well as a Boy Scout Den Mother. After her husband’s retirement from DuPont in 1981, they traveled the world and spent many happy hours with friends at the Academy of Lifelong Learning in Wilmington. Mary is survived by her children, John B. Hood and wife Bonnie, Barbara Brown, and Susan Drumm and husband John; grandchildren John B. Hood, Jr. and partner Cindy Ming, David R. Hood and wife Julianne, Brian L. Hood, Marshall D. Brown and wife Jenn, Kiesrten M. Whitehead and husband Todd, and Christian H. Drumm; great grandchildren Paige, Phoebe and William Hood and Jeremy Whitehead. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 13, 2008 at 2:00 pm at Concord Presbyterian Church, 1800 Fairfax Blvd, Wilmington, DE 19803. Louis D. Iadisernia Age 81, of Wilmington, DE passed away on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at his home. He was a graduate of Stewart Technical School in New York earning degrees in aeronautical and mechanical design and aircraft master mechanics. Louis was an Engineer with CDI Engineering Solutions in Wilmington, retiring in 1991. He was a Navy veteran of WW II, a member of VFW Post # 5447 in Wilmington, and the USS Lunga Point Alumni Association. Louis is survived by his wife of 55 years; Theresa A. Iadisernia, children; Daniel and his wife, Carol, and Philip and his wife, Christiana, all of Newark, and Jeanne Corradino and her husband, Michael of Wilmington, sister, Esther Carapella of Staten Island, NY, and 5 grandchildren; Christine, Eric, Katie, Angela, and Amy. HEIN KLOPPING -- Feb 07, 1921-Nov 11, 2008
Hein Louis Klopping, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on November 11, 2008, at the age of 87. He was born in Utrecht, The Netherlands. During WWII he was a member of the Dutch Underground Resistance. In 1947 he worked in the United States in petroleum refining, and after his return to Holland, he applied for an American immigration visa. In 1951 the University of Utrecht awarded him the degree of Ph.D. in chemistry and pharmacology. Later that year he moved to the United States and found employment at the DuPont Experimental Station in what is now the Agricultural Products department. He worked on a broad range of research projects and is best remembered as a pioneer in the invention and development of novel, systemic, and curative crop disease control agents. In 1992 the DuPont Company awarded him the Lavoisier Medal, the highest award for technical achievement. After retirement in 1981, he was active as a translator and as a consultant in the area of agricultural chemistry. He had a life-long interest in music, playing piano in The Rhythm Doctors and in other combos. In later years he played baroque music and classical jazz on his keyboard. He was president on the Liftwood Estates Civic Association for more than six years and was an avid student of world religions and mythologies. Hein was preceded in death by his son, Martin Louis, and his sister Louise. He is survived by his beloved wife, Anna-Maria Fetzer Klopping; by his daughter, Karin E. Foley and her husband, Henry, of State College, PA, and their two daughters, Erica A. of Philadelphia, PA, and Laura C. of Williamsburg, VA; and by his step-daughter, Diane C. Fetzer, and her son Drake A. Dwornik and his wife, Lauren. He is survived in The Netherlands by his niece, Louise Resink – van de Ven and her children, Raymundo and Dedy Resink. A visitation will be held from 6-8 pm on Friday, November 14, 2008 at the McCRERY MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 3924 Concord Pike (Rt. 202, S. of Silverside Rd.), Wilmington, DE 19803 where a eulogy and sharing of remembrances will occur at 7:45 pm. CATHERINE LAGANA -- Sep 27, 1912-Nov 16, 2008
Kay Lagana, age 96 of Wilmington, Delaware, died on Sunday, November 16, 2008. The daughter of hardworking, Italian immigrants, she was born in 1912 in Bristol, Pennsylvania, where she was raised. Kay graduated from St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1934 in Philadelphia and began a career as a registered nurse. In 1936, she married Thomas G. Lagana, who died in 1996. For many years, they worked together in restaurant businesses in Philadelphia, New Jersey, Florida, and Wilmington where they managed the former Hercules Guest House. She volunteered with the American Red Cross, numerous organizations and social clubs, and in later years, Ingleside Retirement Community, where she lived for 8 years. Kay and her husband were kind-hearted, fun-loving, sociable beings. In younger days, she enjoyed entertaining, playing cards, ice dancing, roller skating, square dancing, and ballroom dancing. After retirement, she and her husband were members of several senior centers. They delighted in being with family and helping others. She is survived by her son, Tom, and daughter-in-law, Laura; two grandsons, Brandon and Daniel; two great-grandsons; and two sisters. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 am on November 25, at Church of the Holy Child, 2500 Naamans Road, Wilmington, DE 19810, where friends may call after 10 am. Burial will be private. ROBERT MCCORMINICK, II -- Dec 31, 1969-Oct 26, 2008
Mr. Robert John McCormick II, age 90, died in Durham, North Carolina on October 26, 2008. Born to Mr. and Mrs. Samuel F. McCormick in 1917 of Wilmington, Delaware, Robert grew up surrounded by a large extended family and lots of friends. In 1941, he received his Bachelor of Arts from Duke University and was commissioned as an officer in the Army Air Corps. After serving as a pilot for 18 missions in the European Campaign, he was shot down and imprisoned by the Germans for the over two years - digging part of the tunnels for the “great escape.” After the war he returned to Wilmington, Delaware where he married Ann Mullin, his bride for over 50 years. He became an executive for numerous family businesses including McCormick Transportation, Jones Motor and Allegany Holding Companies. Outside of the office, Robert spent much of his time in leadership roles with Kiwanis, Lions, Rotary, as well as that of many Masonic Organizations. In continuing to serve God and Country, he was a member of the vestry of Immanuel Episcopal Church and maintained his ties to the VA. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. William C. Hogan and only granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann McCormick Hogan. In addition he is survived by his sister, Mrs. Betty Jones, and her son, Mr. Robert McCormick Somerlatte and great nephew, Mr. Andrew Todd Sommerlatte. On his wife’s side he is also endured by three nephews and their families, Mr. Frederick Krom, Mr. James Krom, as well as Mr. Michael Krom including great nieces and great nephew of the “Krom Crew”- Courtney, Franny, Rachael, Catherine, Rebecca, and Frederick. Most importantly he was a loving and loyal husband, father, and friend who will be sorely missed. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held on Tuesday November 11th, at 11 am at Immanuel Episcopal Church on 2400 West 17th St. Interment will follow the service at Lower Brandywine cemetery off of Kennet Pike. JOHN MILLER, SR. -- Aug 19, 1916-Nov 27, 2008
John David Miller, Sr., age 92, of Wilmington, died peacefully in his sleep while visiting at his granddaughter’s home on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 2008. Mr. Miller was born and raised on his family’s farm in Bozoo, W.V. A proud and hardworking man, he was a machinist for 40 years at the Wilmington shops of the Pennsylvania Railroad. His wife of 51 years, Alma May, died in 1992. He is survived by 3 children, John D. “Jack” Miller, Jr. (Lorraine), Phyllis J. Hann, and James R. Miller (Brenda); 1 sister, Nellie Cave; 9 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at 11am, Friday, December 5 at the McCrery Memorial Chapel, 3710 Kirkwood Hwy. Anna Mary Rohrbaugh nee' McCullough, born in Seitzland PA, died on November 15, 2008 and her husband Paul Edward Rohrbaugh, born in York County PA, died on November 19,2008, both in Wilmington DE after brief illnesses. Anna worked for many years as a counselor at the former Woods Haven-Kruse School for Girls in Claymont, and was a past Worthy Matron in the Order of the Eastern Star. She was an avid traveler, active in several church communities during her years in northern New Castle County, and enjoyed the study and writing of poetry. Paul served in the North African, Sicilian, and Southern Italian Campaigns during the Second World War, and spent the greater part of his career in various capacities at the DuPont Experimental Station near Wilmington. He shared his wife's enjoyment of travel, and was a reader of great scope and depth. They are survived by one son, Dennis E. Rohrbaugh of Wilmington and New York City, one brother each, and several nieces and nephews. Interment was private. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, December 13, at 12 Noon at Mount Lebanon United Methodist Church, 850 Mount Lebanon Road, Wilmington, DE 19803. Elizabeth B. Ryan, age 79, of Wilmington, DE died Monday, November 3, 2008 at Christiana Hospital. Elizabeth attended P.S. DuPont High School, graduating in 1947, and Drexel University where she graduated in 1951. She taught at Gunning Bedford and Mount Pleasant High School. She enjoyed playing bridge, cooking and entertaining her friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Jack Ryan and her sister, Rita Richards. Elizabeth is survived by niece, Mary Minnich and her husband, Joseph; cousin, Mary Jewell; and great grand niece and nephews, Christine, Joseph, and Matthew Minnich. Anna Harriett Scanlon, age 92, passed away peacefully on December 2, 2008 at Heartland hospice after a short illness. Anna was born on June 17, 1916 in Philadelphia, PA to the late William and Anna (Snavely) Seifert. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Scanlon was preceded in death in 1962 by her loving husband, Martin K. Scanlon, her son, whom she lost in July, Dr. Martin W. Scanlon, D.D.S., her brothers Joseph, William and Richard; sisters, Sister Mary Rosalind, Gertrude Bliss and Ethel Guarro. A homemaker all of her life, Mrs. Scanlon is survived by her daughter Patricia Klotz and her husband Benno of MN, and her son Joseph Scanlon and his wife Diane of Wilmington. She is also survived by her daughter-in-law Sara Scanlon; grandchildren, Martin Jr., Matthew, Jennifer, Elizabeth, Kathryn, Benno Jr., Sean and Ryan; great-grandchildren, Nathan, Kinsley, Joseph, Vivian, Frank, Delaney and Will. Iona Hall Turley “Nona”, age 73, of Hockessin, DE, died on November 14, 2008. Nona was born and raised on the Banks family farm in the area of Millsboro, DE and was a 1953 graduate of Millsboro High School. Upon her graduation, she went to work at the DuPont Company, in the real estate division. Nona married her husband, Keith on December 7, 1963 and the DuPont Company transferred the family to Staunton, VA in 1969, Hendersonville, TN in 1974, and ultimately to Hockessin in 1981. For several years, she worked as a travel agent for Hockessin Travel and then Pace Travel. Most recently, Nona worked in the office of the Wilmington Club until illness forced her to retire in January. She was an active member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, Millcreek Hundred, where she volunteered on the Altar Guild and participated in the Foyers Group. Nona and Keith enjoyed extensive traveling and had visited England, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Egypt, Israel, Morocco, South Africa, China and Brazil. In addition to her husband, Keith H. Turley, Nona is survived by their 2 sons and daughters-in-law, John Hall and Kim Turley, and Paul Abbott and Melinda Turley; 2 brothers and sisters-in-law, Leon and Ann Hall, and Frank and Janice Hall; and her cousin, Dorothy Parker. Nona’s first grandchild is due in January. A memorial service will be held at 11am, Saturday, November 22 at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. Born in Ardmore, PA to the late Margaret (nee McClintock) and John Laughead, Marion began her career with the postal service in 1949. She retired after 28 years of service as the Postmaster for Gladwyne, PA. Marion was predeceased by her husband of over 50 years, Joseph Hartford Utz, and son, Gaylon O. Utz. She is survived by her daughter, Margaret L. Evans; grandchildren, Christopher Utz, Susan Connors, and JoAnna Kelly; great-grandchildren, Josephine Utz, James and Megan Connors, and Jamie Kelly; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Monday, December 8, 2008 at 11 am at the McCRERY MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 3924 Concord Pike (Rt. 202, S. of Silverside Rd.), Wilmington, DE 19803 where friends are invited to call after 10 am. Interment will follow the funeral at Siloam cemetery. Catherine A. Walker “Bobbie” age 102, of Hockessin, DE died Monday, December 1, 2008 at Cokesbury Village. Miss Walker was a supervisor for Bell Telephone prior to her retirement. She was a member of First and Central Presbyterian Church in Wilmington for many years. She is survived by her brother, Dr. Charles Walker of Hockessin, DE. A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 5, 2008 at 1:30 pm at the Cokesbury Village Chapel, 726 Loveville Rd., Hockessin, DE 19707. Burial will be private. NORMA LEE WOJCIECHOWSKI “ LEE” Norma Lee Wojciechowski, 75, died on November 10, 2008 at home with her family by her side from Chronic Obstructive Pulmunary Disease (COPD) after a courageous battle extending over many years. Lee was born in Indiana, Pa. and was the youngest of four daughters to Beaulah E. Evans and Sherman J. Shearer. She graduated from Indiana High School in 1951 where she was a baton twirler in the L’Indien school band; a member of TRI-HI-Y; Safety Patrol; AG club; played intramural basketball, and never crossed half-court with the ball. She trained for airline employment in Kansas City, Mo. and was employed in 1955 by Capital airlines as a Long-Line Controller at Reagan National Airport in Washington, DC. In October 1956, she met her husband, Stanley R. Wojciechowski. In November 1957, she transferred to Wilmington where she was a reservation specialist in the DuPont building for Capital airlines. On June 14, 2008 they celebrated their 50th year of marriage. Lee was an active supporter of her family’s activities. She participated in Indian guides for her two sons and Indian princesses for her two daughters; cub scout leader and den mother. Lee coached St. Mary Magdalen’s cheerleaders and hand made uniforms worn by the team. Lee assisted the coach with the girl’s softball team; conducted school fund raisers; and aided the school instructors as a lay staff member. Lee was an active supporter to Boy Scout Troop 528 at Grace Episcopal Church, leading the annual Awards’ dinner preparations. Lee was the “Administrative and Business Manager” for her husband for the many years he was associated with Naaman’s Little League baseball in addition to transporting future Hall of Famers. With her friend, Alice Riley, they managed the League’s snack bar and solicited contributions for the League’s annual baseball program for opening day activities. Lee was a member of the Delaware Veterans Association’s Women’s Auxiliary where she ran the pool’s snack bar. As her children moved on to high school, she volunteered to work at Padua Academy’s school’s cafeteria in support of her daughter, Missy, while pulling double duty by volunteering to work at the cafeteria at Archmere Academy for her two sons, Greg, and Gary, and her daughter, Beth Ann. She informally assisted in handling the school’s varsity softball program in its infant stages. She was a member of the Dupont Country Club; Delaware Diamonds Society, in support of the Blue Hens’ football fortunes; St. Mary Magadalen’s Contract Bridge Club, where her most cherished moments were to defense and “set” her husband. Lee loved to knit, especially Afghans and Christmas stockings; sew her daughters’ clothes; and create Halloween costumes, especially an 8’ shark for Greg and a 6’ Gumby for Gary, both of which were often borrowed by future Halloweeners. She loved to cook; her Christmas Eve Dinners of Prime Rib Roast and Lobster will always be cherished by her family. She loved to crab and fish and an 8 -1/2’ sailfish resides in the family room. She fished the Pacific Ocean and caught trip Chinook and Coho salmon and triple headers of sea bass and ling cod which were vacuum- sealed and shipped home, as testimony of her ability to handle a fishing rod. She is survived by her husband, Stanley R. Wojciechowski, Wilmington; son, Gregory R.Wojciechowski, and his wife Ginger, Buxton, NC, daughters, Michele “Missy” Cetola, Wilmington, and Beth A. Roros and husband, Dr. James G. Roros, Ocean, N.J.; sister, Mikki Kahne, Lewes, DE. Lee had three grandsons, Michael A Cetola, Jr.; Costa R. and Nicholas J. Roros; granddaughters, Amanda L. Wojciechowski, Rhodanthe, N.C.; Madison Lee Wojciechowski-Locke, Wilmington, nieces Cheryl Keblen, Wilmington; Kimberly Wemberly, Brementon, WA; Lisa McTigue, Gaithersburg, MD. and nephew Eric Cohan; Greg’s extended family C.J. and Aimee Pannuty; and Gary’s extended family of fiancée Karen Locke and her two sons, Robert and Patrick Locke. Lee was predeceased in death by mother and father and son Gary, sisters Mary Jane Cohan, Falls Church, VA. and Betty L. Newcombe, Lewes, DE. Lee or ‘Squirt” as she was affectionately called by her husband will also be missed by Natslee, her beloved English Bulldog who was forever by her bedside. The family deeply appreciates the care giving and compassion of Drs. John J. Goodill, Javed M. Gilani, and Omar Khan. We thank everyone at Community Surgical and Bayada Nurses who comforted and eased her terminal experience.
