JOSEPH BONK
Joseph F. Bonk Age 66, went home to the Lord from his home surrounded by his family. Joe, was born in Wilmington, DE to the late Felix and Martha Bonk. He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1962 to 1966, where he was stationed in Pearl Harbor Hawaii. After the service he Became an electrician and worked for Furness Electric for 20 years. He was a loyal member of the IBEW for 34 years. He enjoyed visiting his daughter and her family in FL and loved to vacation in Cape May, NJ. He also loved to go to the Boothwyn Farmer’s Market and Delaware Park. He was preceded in death by his brother, Michael Bonk. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Patricia A. Bonk; his daughters, Dr. Valerie Bonk-Shorter and her husband Dr. George Shorter of Gainesville, FL and Barbara Bonk of Wilmington. Also left to cherish his memory are his grandchildren, Laurie and Owen Shorter and several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins. A viewing will be held at McCrery Memorial Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike on Wednesday Aug 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Holy Rosary RC Church, 3200 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont on Thursday Aug 13 at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Delaware Veteran’s cemetery, Bear. EMMA BOVE
Emma P. Bove Age 83, of Wilmington, DE passed away on July 10, 2009 after a short illness. She was a loving wife and mother. Emma was a member of First and Central Presbyterian Church. Her husband of 55 years, William A. Bove died in 2003. Emma is survived by her daughters, Beverly L. Bove, and Betsy A. Bove and her husband, Valentino T. Colazzo all of Wilmington, her sister, Mabel Emory of Newark, many nieces and nephews, and 2 grand dogs, Ike and Mamie. JAMES BRANDER
James P. Brander, Sr. Age 79, of Galeton, PA, formerly of Wilmington, DE passed away on May 7, 2009 at home. He was born on January 17, 1930 in Calumet, Michigan, and was the son of the late Thomas P. and Anna (Mairele) Brander, and his stepmother, Jean Brander. He was a son of a lighthouse keeper. As a young child he lived at the lighthouse station on Neebish Island, Michigan. While on Neebish Island, he attended a one-room school with his brother Robert. After the U.S. Lighthouse Service was assimilated by the U.S. Coast Guard in1939, the family moved to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. He attended high school there, and was a notable athlete in baseball, basketball, and track. After graduating from high school, he sailed on ore-transport ships on the Great Lakes. He is an Air Force veteran and served his country in the Korean War. He met his wife Isabelle (Crowe) Brander while in the Air Force and they were married for 42 years. She preceeded him in death in 1997. He worked for Diamond State Telephone Company as an installer and retired in1983 in Wilmington. He was a Master Mason of Armstrong Lodge No. 26 AF & AM, Newport for the past 50 years. In his retirement, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, wood working, storytelling and playing with his dog, Summer. In 2001, he moved to Galeton, Pennsylvania with his son, Thomas, his wife Charlene and grandson, Tommy where he lived the rest of his life. He is survived by his children; Sharon Brander of Newark, and Thomas R. Brander, 5 grandchildren, Jim, Christine, Jennifer, Christopher and Tommy, 3 great grandchildren; Alyssa, Emma, and Aidan, and his brother, Robert Brander of Austin, TX. In addition to his wife, he is predeceased by a son, James P. Brander, Jr., a sister, Nancy (Brander) Knox and a brother, Thomas (Dick) Brander. Anna Fanning Breeding Age 97 of Wilmington, DE passed away at the Masonic Home of Delaware on July 4, 2009. Daughter of the late Walter and Martha A. Fanning, Anna was employed as an accountant with the DuPont Company before retiring. She loved to travel, bake pies and was a member of Marshallton United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Warren E. Breeding. Anna is survived by her niece Eleanor Fanning of Marshallton. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday July 8, 2009 at 11 am in the McCrery Memorial Chapel 3710 Kirkwood Highway at Duncan Rd. Visitation will start at 10 am. DINAH P. BROADBENT
Dinah Pardee Broadbent Age 71, of West Grove, PA, passed away on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at her home surrounded by her family. Dinah was born in Wilmington, DE and was the daughter of Clarke M. and Edith (Baughman) Pardee. She was raised on the grounds of Delaware Park Race Track and graduated from Conrad High School in 1955. She took business college courses at the University of Delaware. Dinah was a true nature lover, enjoying her mountain home, watching the wildlife, walking the paths she and her husband made, riding their four-wheelers and tending to her gardens. She was also an avid reader, loved to travel and most of all, she loved to spend time with her family. Dinah, who had a wonderful sense of humor, deep love of nature, and a true sense of integrity, will be deeply missed by her husband, family and all who knew her. Dinah is predeceased by her parents and her sister, Patricia A. Pardee. She is survived by her loving husband of 36 years, Edward R. Broadbent; daughters, Karen Clupper and her husband Tom of Landenberg, PA, Barbara Doremus Johnson of Boca Raton, FL; son, Robert B. Doremus and his wife Marie of Houston, TX; stepdaughter, Deborah Kronenbitter and her husband Robert of Poway, CA; stepsons, Edward Randal Broadbent and his wife Debbie of West Grove, PA; Richard Broadbent and his wife Barbara of Lewes, DE; and Jon Thomas Broadbent and his wife Beth of Lincoln University, PA; 19 grandchildren: Jennifer, Adam, Erin, Katherine, Sara, Eric, Kristen, Beau, Richard, Grace, Nicholas, Jaclyn, Ellie, Michael, Ryan, Hugh, Emily, Mollie and Kyle; 7 great-grandchildren: Olivia, Julian, Annika, Ava, Savannah, Delaney and Winston. BETTY JANE (NEE HANBY) BROWN
Betty Jane Brown (Hanby) Age 79, of Cooper Farm, Wilmington, wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, was born on April 24, 1930. She passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 20, 2009 at her home surrounded by her loving family after a long battle with cancer and other illnesses. Betty Jane grew up in The Cedars, attended Marshallton Elementary School and graduated from Conrad High School in 1948. She drove a school bus for Gregg’s Bus Company for 18 years. She enjoyed traveling the country many times over the years with her husband, George, from Alaska to Florida and from Delaware to California. Betty especially loved spending time with her children and their families always telling a story or giving advice. She was a member of The Cedars United Methodist Church since Nov.24, 1940 and was recently recognized as the longest active member at the 100th Anniversary Celebration of the Church. Betty was also a member and past president of the Cedars UMW. Betty Jane was predeceased by her parents John W. and Etta M. Hanby,her husband of 55 years, George C. Brown, her siblings Robert M. Hanby, Kenneth W. Hanby, step-sister Margaret C. Brown and grandson Matthew Fritz. She is survived by her children and their spouses Debbie and John Floyd, Larry and Ellen Brown, Cindy Fritz, Beverly and Joe Kasowski, Nancy and Bill Steen, Betty and Chris DeAscanis; grandchildren John, Kimberly, Zachary, Coleman, Ashley, Jennifer, Joe, Sande, Stephanie, C.J., Nicole, Ryan and Andrew; great-grandchildren Joey, Justin, Vanessa and Parker. Other survivors include her siblings Barbara Brackin and Donald R. Hanby, along with many nieces, nephews, brother-in-law, sisters-in law, cousins and friends. Barbara B. Bryan (nee Cummings), age 65, died Tuesday, April 21, 2009 at home in Wilmington, DE. Barbara was born in Framingham, MA and lived most of her life in Columbus, moving to DE two years ago to be with family. Barbara is predeceased by her brother, John and great-grandchild, Hailey. She is survived by her loving husband of 43 years, Albert Bryan; 4 children, Ruthann Marshall, Darlene Ray, Marcella Linton, and Timothy Bryan; 3 brothers, Harry, Arthur, and Thomas Cummings; 10 grandchildren, Brandy, Nathaniel, Brent, Jennifer, Jessica, Katie, Amber, Bobby, Abigail and Jason; and 4 great-grandchildren, Kylie, Jayden, Hadden, DJ, Gaberial, Gavin, and Zachary; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. LOIS BURNS
Lois June Burns, age 69, of Greenville, DE, died on Friday, April 10, 2009 at Heartland Hospice of DE in Wilmington after battling breast cancer for over 10 years. Lois was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., the daughter of Herbert and Helen Leistman. Her family moved to Colorado Springs, Colorado where she graduated from Colorado Springs High School. After graduation, she attended San Francisco State University, San Francisco, California. Lois and her husband, Don, met in San Francisco and lived in the San Francisco bay area until 1969. Lois and Don lived in many areas of the country, including 16 years in Dover, Massachusetts before moving to Greenville in 1994. While living in Massachusetts, Lois worked as a Real Estate Broker for Dover Country Properties in Dover. She enjoyed giving her time to many charitable organizations. Travel was always a passion of hers. After retiring in 2004, Lois and Don spent much of each year traveling the world. Cruising and family vacations to Sanibel Island, Florida were always a special pleasure for her. Lois is survived by her husband of 45 years, Don Burns, of Greenville; a daughter and son-in-law, Lesley and Glenn Horner; a son and daughter-in-law, Todd and Sandy Burns; 3 grandsons, Kevin Horner, Dylan Horner and Colin Burns; 1 granddaughter, Haley Burns – all of Massachusetts; a brother and sister-in-law, Herbert and Rose Leistman of California; and many nieces and nephews. Lois always cherished time with her family and friends. A funeral service will be held at 2pm, Monday, April 13 at the McCrery Memorial Chapel, 3710 Kirkwood Hwy. (Route 2 East @ Duncan Rd.). Elsie Irene Burris Age, 88 passed away on April 21, 2009. Elsie was born in Wilmington to the late Thomas and Elsie Sweeny. She was a homemaker and was active for many years with the Eastern Star. She was also a Past Worthy Matron of Saint John’s Chapter #4. Elsie was preceded in death by her husband Louis C. Burris, her sisters, Virginia Ann Sweeny, Lillian Russell and Florence Callaway. She is survived by her children, Elsie Woolsey and Louis, James and Richard Burris. She is also survived by numerous grandchildren; a brother, Thomas Sweeny and her sisters, Vada Lockerman, Josephine Garrett and Francis Novak. Nannie P. Butler Age 90, of Georgetown, DE, formerly of Wilmington passed away at home surrounded by her loving family on May 28, 2009. She worked at the Elkton Powder Plant in Elkton, MD during WW II and later at Foulk Manor North. Nannie was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Butler and granddaughter, Nancy Lou. She is survived by her loving children, Nancy Lou Skiles, Louis Hawkins and his wife, Peggy, Eleanor Lobodzinski, Barbara Henson and her huband, Kelly, Nadine Kozlowski and her husband, Joey, and Kim Jackson and her husband, David, 21 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and 6 great great grandchildren. That made 5 generations which she was very proud. She brought a new and different meaning to the word, family. Nannie was a very strong, loving, and caring Mother, Grandmother, and friend who kept her family very strong. Lee V. Cale Age 77, of Wilmington, DE died on January 19, 2009 at his home. He was born in Stanton, DE in 1931 to the late Virgil B. and Bessie E. (Tucker) Cale. Lee was a 1951 graduate of Brown Vocational HS, and retired from Winterthur Museum and Gardens after 38 years service. He totally loved his 40 + years as a volunteer Fire Fighter and Fire Police. Lee was a life member of Five Points Fire Co., Hockessin Fire Co., Winterthur Fire Dept., Delaware Valley Chiefs Assn., New Castle County Fire Police Assn., and Delaware State Fire Police. Lee was a former member of the Greens Hill Lions Club and St. Marks United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Calvin; and daughter, Tamra J. Sapp. Lee is survived by his wife of 56 years, Alice Anderson Cale; son, Robert L. Cale of Tampa, FL; daughter, Beverlea A. Cale of Wilmington; sisters, Gladys M. Baker and her husband, Bill of New Castle; and Meriam Jarrell of Newark; 5 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren. He will also be so missed by his constant companion, miniature schnauzer, Punkin. Charles F. Camp “Chuck” Age 80, went home to be with the Lord on July 14, 2009 at the Christiana Hospital. Chuck enjoyed time with his family, especially taking walks with his wife Bea. He was a member of Pike Creek Bible Church for over 35 years and was a Phillies and NASCAR fan. Chuck had worked for the Army Corp of Engineers surveying the Great Lakes. He retired after 37 years as an inspector for the Chrysler Corp. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Bea Camp, his son, David Camp and his wife Debbie, his daughter, Ellen Camp, his grandchildren, Robert and Randi Siler, Amy Moseley and her husband Jason, Joseph Camp and his wife Rachael and his great granddaughters, Allyssa and Victoria. CARL CANTERA
Carl A. Cantera, age 84, a well known and well respected area developer and businessman, and lifelong Delaware resident, died on Palm Sunday, April 5, 2009 at his home. Carl was born and raised in Wilmington, the son of the late Domenick and Mariannina Cantera. He proudly served in both the United States Army and United States Navy. After his service to our country, Carl attended the University of Delaware, graduating in 1949 with a degree in civil engineering. After graduating, Carl joined Cantera Construction, the family business his father started in 1924. Under Carl’s leadership, the business expanded, becoming Bellevue Holding Company. Among the many projects Carl was responsible for developing were local office buildings, shopping centers, apartment complexes, banks, and nursing homes, as well as residential waterfront developments in Maryland. The business continues today under the guidance of the third generation of the Cantera family. One of his hobbies was building and flying radio controlled model airplanes, and in 1953 he was a founding member of The Delaware R/C Model Airplane Club. He was involved in “Warbirds Over Delaware,” an internationally known event featuring scale models of aircraft flown during times of war, held each year at Lums Pond. Also, Carl participated in car shows all across the country showcasing his award winning Ferrari collection, including the prestigious Best of Class award at the Invitational Pebble Beach “Concours d’Elegance.” He enjoyed traveling extensively, driving all across the United States, touring the Orient, India, as well as many countries in Europe. On one of the trips he even experienced riding an elephant. For many years he enjoyed spending winters at his home in Hawaii with friends and family. Carl will by deeply missed by his wife of 59 years, Betty J. Cantera; their 4 children, Richard D. Cantera (Maureen), Carolyn C. Harlin (Ray), Steven C. Cantera (Kathleen), and Jill A. Cantera (Rob Moores); 1 brother, Charles D. Cantera; 6 grandchildren, Lynn H. Kelley (William), Amy Cantera (John Wright), Michele Harra (Rob), Meredith Centrella, R.J. and Max Moores; and 4 great-grandchildren, Carolina, Merritt, Steven and Brinton. He will be fondly remembered by his many friends across the country as well. Dorothy J. Cline Age 85, of Devon, PA, formerly of Wilmington Manor, passed away surrounded by her family on Thursday, March 5, 2009 at Paoli Memorial Hospital. Dorothy was born in Memphis, TN to the late Robert and Donna Fortner. She was a draftswoman at the former Delaware Power and Light. Dorothy retired as a cafeteria worker at the Devon Elementary School in Devon, PA. She was a member of New Castle United Methodist Church and a volunteer for the Surrey Services in Devon. She enjoyed her social craft and card groups, along with her sewing and painting. She is survived by her husband of 62 yrs, Buford E., a son, Charles of Townsend, DE, a daughter, Donna Cooper (Richard) of Wilmington, DE, 4 grandchildren, Richard, Jr, and Andrew Cooper, Charles Cline, Jr., and Ra-an Brannen, a sister, Regina Benson (Frank) of Memphis, TN, a great grandson, Michael Cline and nieces, nephews and cousins. Carolyn T. Clark Age 84, of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully January 23, 2009. Carolyn graduated from Henry C. Conrad High School where she was drum majorette then worked as a secretary at the New Castle Airbase during WWII. She was retired from the Bureau for the Visually Impaired where she served 30 dedicated years as executive secretary to the director of the agency. Carolyn loved to travel and socialize with her husband and their many friends. She enjoyed collecting and wearing jewelry, bargain shopping, and was a lifelong Phillies fan. Those who knew her well will remember her kindness and generosity. Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 62 years, Garland C. Clark. She will also be sadly missed by her daughter; Susan Clark August, with whom she lived; granddaughters, Stefanie and Christina and great grandson, Nicholas. WALTER CLOUD
Walter Cloud Age 64 of Wilmington, DE died suddenly on Monday August 10, 2009 in Lewes, DE. Born in Wilmington, son of Joseph Cloud Sr. deceased and Elizabeth Walter Cloud, he worked until retirement with UPS delivering in the north Wilmington area and also drove part-time with Dynamic Physical Therapy. Mr. Cloud was a 1963 graduate of PS DuPont High School and attended St. Joseph University and the University of Delaware on basketball scholarships. He enjoyed model trains, woodworking, golfing, NASCAR , humor and their two dogs, Cassie & Archie. Walter also proudly served in the U. S. Army in Vietnam. He is survived by his devoted wife of 25 years, Beverly Greenberg Cloud and their daughter, Meredith Lindsey. He is also survived by brothers, Joseph and wife Joyce, Jeffery and wife Carol, Gregory and wife Brenda and many wonderful friends. Douglas A Conaway “Big Daddy Doug” passed away suddenly on September 20th 2009 at the young age of 54. Doug retired from Local 669, Road Sprinkler Fitters Union in 2001. He enjoyed riding his trike and driving his magnum. Spending time with his family and friends and watching the New York Giants win football games were his favorite pass times. He was also a lifetime member of ABATE. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Kathy Conaway; two sons, “Little Doug” Conaway II and his wife Chrissy and Ed Conaway; his daughter Amy Conaway; three grandchildren, Jonathan, Adrianna, and Ozzy Conaway all of New Castle. Also left to cherish his memory are his parents, Phil and Patricia Vitalo of Chesapeake City, MD; two sisters, Debbie Lewis and her husband Donald of Ellendale and Cookie Burget and her husband Jim of Bear; two brothers, Charles Conaway and his wife Pat and John Conaway. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews and their children and his two devoted dogs, Brutus and Gizmo. Doug was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. A Memorial Service for Doug will be at Local 626 Carpenters Union Hall Saturday October 10, 2009 from 2-5 P.M. Margaret M. Conley “Aunt Peggy” Age 69 of Newark, DE passed away on August 12, 2009. Mrs. Conley was Owner/Operator of Conley Enterprises before retiring. She is survived by her husband of 50 years George E. Conley; her children, Marc L. Conley of Middletown, DE, Edward K. Conley and wife Tina of Newark, DE, Aloah Peacock and partner Cheryl Betts of Bear, DE, Connie L. Wilt of McClure, PA, Lori A. Conley of Newark, DE and Rebecca Sue Conley Tait of Narrows, VA; 16 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; 3 brothers, Joseph Gratton Hill and wife Cecilia of Rehoboth Beach, DE, Roy David Hill and wife Karen and David Blaine and wife Edith all of Pocahontas, VA; 2 sisters, Hellen Gravely and husband Jerry of Pocahontas, VA and Connie “Bit” Wynn of Union, SC. Margaret is also survived by many other family and friends. A viewing will be held on Sunday August 16 in the McCrery Memorial Chapel, 3710 Kirkwood Highway at Duncan Rd. Richard B. Cooke “Dick” Age 78 of Marshallton, DE passed away on February 3, 2009. Mr. Cooke was employed with General Motors as a machinist for 26 years. Prior to GM he was co-owner of the family business Savory & Cooke Structural & Ornamental Iron Works on Lincoln St. in Wilmington. Dick enjoyed the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and was an all around good husband, father, grandfather, friend and neighbor. Dick is survived by his wife of 49 years Fay E. Cooke; his children, Luella A. Cooke and husband Troy W. Rees of Newark, Pamela L. Turner and husband Jeffrey C. of New Castle and Jeffrey P. Cooke and wife Alayna of Avondale, PA; grandchildren Erica L. and Jillian F. Allen and Tanner S. Cooke; brother William J. Cooke of Milford and sister Gladys Jarrell of Monroe, NC. Dick was preceded in death by his brother Donald J. Cooke. The funeral service will be held on Saturday February 7, 2009 at 10:30 am in the McCrery Memorial Chapel., 3710 Kirkwood Highway at Duncan Rd. Family and friends are welcome at 9:30 am. Revonda M. McGaha Cordel “Ronnie” Age 75, of Wilmington, DE has gone to be with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ on Wednesday December 10th 2008 at home surrounded by her family. Born in McDowell County, West Virginia to Chelcie Thomas and Cattrell Arnold, Mrs. Cordel retired from Alfred I. DuPont Children's Hospital after many years of service. Ronnie was a devoted mother and grandmother who loved spending time with her family, her cats, cooking, traveling, and gardening. She served the Lord with all her heart as a member of God's Grace Christian Fellowship of Wilmington. Ronnie is pre-deceased by her husband Lawrence Gene Cordel, son David P. McGaha, and step-daughter Brenda Cordel. She is survived by sons; Lawson McGaha and wife Freddie, Wesley R. McGaha Sr. and wife Debbie, Daughters; Lora Hope Brown, Terry A. Twardowski and husband Ron, and Dorothy (DJ) Radel and husband Todd. Step-sons; Billy Cordel, Randy Cordel and wife Terri. Larry Cordel, and Ronnie Cordel, step-daughter; Debbie Cordel, 21 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff of the Helen Graham Cancer Center and Compassionate Care Hospice for the loving care they provided to their Mom. Gertrude T. Coupe “Gert” Age 89, of Claymont, DE, passed away on Monday, June 8, 2009 at the Franciscan Care Center at Brackenville, Wilmington, DE. Gert was born in Chester, PA to the late Patrick & Marie(Harvey) McCarthy and graduated from Chester HS in 1939. She was a member of the Girl Scouts of America in Northern Chester and a Neighborhood Chairwoman. After moving to Delaware, she was a member of Holy Rosary Church where she was the first woman trustee, worked in the parish office, Sanctuary Society and RCIA Team and a member of the Diocesan’s Mother’s Guild. Gert was a long time employee of FW Woolworth and ARA Food Service at the former ICI Americas. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur H. Coupe, Sr. in 1970. She is survived by her 10 children, Marie (Ken) Chew, Arthur H., Jr.(Cindy), Bernadette, Michael (Nancy), Ronald (Debra), Edward (Debora), Nancy (Tom) Evans, Christine (Bill) Eby, John, Robert (Pam) and 2 siblings, Patricia Yacyshyn and Patrick (Rita) McCarthy; 23 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
