RUTH M. DULING
Ruth M. Duling (REVISED OBITUARY) Age 86, of Wilmington, DE, passed away at home on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 Ruth was a homemaker. Ruth’s husband, Guy W. Sr., passed away in 1957. She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Riley and her husband Bernard of Middletown; a son, Guy W. Jr of Wilmington; a sister, Phyllis Tolmie, of Wilmington; 4 grandchildren, Clyde Riley of Dover, Guy Riley of Elkton, MD, Randy Riley and his wife Noelle of Dover and Regan Fretz and her husband Nathan of Clayton and 5 great grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by her sister. Elizabeth Phillips. EDNA DURBOROW
Edna C. Durborow (Koury) Age 102, of Wilmington, DE passed away on Sunday, July 26, 2009. Born to Sharbel and Helen Koury in Hambleton, WV, she was raised in Uniontown, PA, was graduated from South Western Normal School, now California University, and taught for 6 years at South Uniontown Elementary. From 1939-46, Edna worked as reference librarian for the State Library in Harrisburg where she met and married James A. Durborow. After moving to Wilmington in 1949, she became a Republican Committee woman, was involved in organizing the Talleyville Branch Library housed in Tigue’s Drug Store, was an original member of St. Mary Magdalen Church, and taught at Krebs Elementary in Newport for 19 years. Edna volunteered for 33 years with St. Francis Hospital Junior Board and 18 years for Dupont Children’s Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Duborow. Edna is survived by her sister, Josephine Minito of Middletown, PA; son, James and his wife Jacqueline of Wilmington; daughter, Sue and her husband Alex Kramer of Berwyn, PA and Avalon NJ; granddaughters, Meredith and husband John McGrath of Phoenixville, PA; Ashley and husband, Todd White of Wayne, PA; and Elizabeth Kramer of Absecon, NJ; 6 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Edna’s family would like to thank the staff of Christiana Care of Wilmington and Manor Care Foulk Road for their excellent care and support. Visitation will be held on Friday, July 31, 2009, from 9:30 to 10:30 at the MCCRERY MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 3924 Concord Pike, Talleyville ( just south of Silverside Road). A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 am at St. Mary Magdalen Church, Concord Pike and Sharply Road, Wilmington, DE 19803. Interment will be in All Saints cemetery. HOWARD F. EBERSOLE
HOWARD F. EBERSOLE Age 87 of Rising Sun, MD, passed away on Tuesday, February 10, 2009. Howard was born in Shamokin, PA. He was the son of the late Howard and Esmeralda Ebersole. He was a member of the U.S. Army Air Corp and U.S. Army Signal Corp as a civil servant serving in the Hawaiian Islands during World War II. He worked in the automobile industry in Philadelphia and Delaware spending most of his career with Quillen Brothers Ford, Carman Auto Group and Gambacorta Buick as Controller. He was a member in good standing of the Philadelphia District Lincoln Mercury Controllers Club, Philadelphia District of Ford Dealers and the Philadelphia Automotive Accountants Club. He served in several leadership positions with Brandywine District Committee of the Boy Scouts of America and the Brandywine Optimist Club where he was bestowed the high honor of Optimist of the Year. Howard was very devoted to McCabe United Methodist Church of Wilmington, DE, serving as Treasurer on the Board of Trustees and a member of the Finance Committee. His wife of 35 years, Katherine M. Ebersole and his sister Alma Miller predeceases Mr. Ebersole. He is sadly missed by his daughter Jacqueline L. Poore and her husband Lotan of Rising Sun, MD, his nephew Paul Miller and his wife Carol of New Castle, DE, his nieces Susan Rivera and her husband Tom and Cheryl Miller of Wilmington, DE, grandchildren Jack H. Goldstein and his wife Cheryl of North East, MD, Daniel R. Goldstein and his wife Cindy of Richmond, VA, Deborah B. Schneider and her husband Darryl of Port Deposit, MD, Kim Gannon and her husband George of Jamison, PA and 13 great grandchildren. JOHN EDLER
John E. Edler, Jr. “Jack” Age 88, of Greenville, DE passed away on June 18, 2009. He was an Army Air Force veteran of WW II. Jack was a Mason with Armstrong Lodge # 26 A.F. & A.M., and a member of the Nur Temple and their motorcycle club. He was a Mechanical Engineer with ICI Americas retiring in 1983 after 35 years service. Jack is survived by his wife, Rebecca L. Edler; 3 children, Marie McCafferty and her husband Frank of Hagerstown, MD, Vicki Simione of Martha’s Vineyard, MA, and John E. Edler, III and his wife Lynn of Clayton, DE; 1 step-daughter, Amy Hemphill of Denver, CO, 10 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Esther M. Edler and step-daughter, Carrie L. Finch. DAVID D. ELLIS
David D. Ellis Age 54, of Newark, Delaware, beloved son and father went to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 11, 2008. David worked as a Millwright for General Motors for the past 29 ½ years. He was a veteran of the US Air Force. David enjoyed life, riding his Harley with friends, camping, fishing and going to his favorite concerts. He was a member of the UAW Local 435, where he served on the Board of Directors. He was active in charitable organizations; one of his favorites was being a coordinator of the Salvation Army Bell Ringers. He was an avid Eagles Fan. He is survived by his son, Jason B. of Frederick, MD; his mother and step-father, Nancy and Luther Rhoades of Newark; his former wife, Beverly Ellis of Newark; a niece, Casey Yetter of New Castle; 3 step-sisters, Linda Willis, Mary Jane Pomponi and Sandy Grant; 2 step-brothers, David & Steven Roberts, as well as, a host of other family and friends. David was predeceased by his brother Brian and father, Donald. He will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him. RICHARD EVANS
Richard H. Evans, Sr. “Dick” Age 74, of New Castle, passed away suddenly on February 8, 2009. He shared many years of laughter and happiness with his beloved wife, Judith Roberts Evans. Dick was the son of Frank and Dorothy Evans, born in Upper Darby, PA. He graduated from Upper Darby H.S and Penn State University. Upon graduation, he went to work for Diamond State Telephone Co., as a District Manger. He then began his political career campaigning for the Republican Party. This led him to the next chapter of his life, as Chief of staff for U.S. Representative, and then Governor Pierre S. duPont. He then went on to serve as the V.P. of Corporate Communications for Delmarva Power and Light. Upon retiring in 1996, Dick channeled his passion for community service as the Executive Director of Wilmington 2000, and then as planning consultant for the Wilmington Public Safety department and the Wilmington Library. Over the years his passion for helping others led him to participate in a wide variety of community and service organizations. His competitive spirit, and love of politics, as well as the City of New Castle, led him to run for the seat of Mayor of New Castle in 2007. Dick served on several committees and supported the following organizations- Friends of the Wilmington Library, the United Way, St. Hedwigs Sr. Center, the Rotary and Kiwanis Clubs, and the Delaware Assoc. of Non-Profit Agencies. Most recently, he was a volunteer for the Police Service & Community Response Team in the city of New Castle, and served as co-chair of the New Castle Public Library building fund. Dick was a devoted father, who, in addition to his wife, is survived by his 2 sons, Richard, Jr., and his wife Maggie; and Scott and his wife Donna, all of Wilmington; and 1 daughter, Cindy Molloy, of Raleigh, NC. He loved spending time with his grandchildren: Samantha, Liz and Jack Molloy, Ricky and Heather Evans and Blake and Logan Evans. He is also survived by 1 brother, Jim Evans, of Bear, DE, and 1 step-sister, Dee Hartman, of PA. HALLIE JEAN FISHER
Hallie “Jean” Fisher Age 84, of Greenville, DE passed away on Monday, September 7, 2009. Jean was born in Homeville, PA, the oldest of four children to the late George and Hallie Smith. Jean earned her teaching degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1947 and put herself through college by working as a docent at Carnegie Museum. She began her teaching career at Quail School in Pittsburgh. Several years after moving to Delaware, she continued her teaching career at Burkholder’s Kindergarten; she became an aide at McKean HS, taught Life Science at Brandywine Jr. HS, and retired from Stanton Middle School in 1985 – loving teaching and children. She and her husband enjoyed boating on the Chesapeake Bay and were active members of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church. Jean was predeceased by her son, George Fisher and her sister, Nancy Angell. Jean is survived by her husband, Dan of 61 years; two daughters, Carol Oates and husband Thomas, Susan Williams and husband Michael; daughter-in-law, Debra Fisher and sister-in-law, Ruth Fisher; sister, Sylvia McCartney and husband, Raymond (Mac); brother, George Smith and wife, Sara; three grandchildren, Andrea Coleman and husband, Keith, Anthony Cutrona, III and wife, Rachelle, Cade Fisher and wife Laura; and five great grandchildren. LOUIS FOREACRE
Louis K. Foreacre “Lou” Age 76 of Wilmington, DE went home to be with the Lord on July 20, 2009. Son of the late Lewis and Florence Foreacre, Louis was a decorated Korean War veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps. He was an ex-P.O.W, a Purple Heart recipient as well as an expert rifleman. He was employed with Electric Hose & Rubber, Delmar Photo and James River Corporation before retiring. Louis enjoyed fishing and was an avid Phillies and Eagles fan. He is survived by his wife of 54 years Laura Lee Foreacre; his children, LuAnn Muller and husband Paul of Newark, DE, Louis W. Foreacre of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. and Larry A. Foreacre and wife Susan of Wilmington, DE; his beloved grandchildren, Jennifer and Julianne Foreacre, Joshua, Lauren, Paige and Luke Muller; 1 sister, Iris Sagan, his mother in-law, Marguerite Jones and his beloved dog Fluffy. JEANINE M. FORSHA
Jeanine M. Forsha Age 79, of Wilmington, DE passed away Tuesday, March 24, 2009. She was born in West Palm Beach, FL to the late Jean Verneze and Helen Verneze Schaeffer. After her father’s death, Jeanine and her mother moved to Chicago, IL. Upon graduation from high school and secretarial school, Jeanine began employment at the former Illinois Central Railroad, where she met her future husband, Ed. After the birth of their children, Jeanine and Ed moved to Wilmington, DE. Jeanine stayed at home to raise their children, but eventually returned to secretarial work at her church, The Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. Jeanine retired in 1999 after 25 years of service. In addition to her parents, Jeanine is preceded in death by her husband of 42 yrs., Charles Edward, and her sons, David E. and Robert S. Forsha. She is survived by her daughter Nancy F. Huber and her husband Darryl of Wilmington; and her grandsons, Jack and Ben Huber. Florence A. Fox ( Fowler ) Age 87, of Bear, DE passed away on September 8, 2009. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Francis W. Fox, Sr. died in 1988. Florence is also preceded in death by her children, Donald Fox, Barbara Saxe, and Deborah Fox, granddaughter, Kimberly Saxe, and brothers, Kenneth and Larry. Rosemarie B. France, age 69, died Friday, July 3, 2009 at the Christiana Hospital. Rosemarie was born in Brema Hofen, Germany, but lived in Wilmington most of her adult life in Wilmington. She worked for Wilmington Trust, retiring after 26 years of service. In her spare time Rosemarie enjoyed bowling for the Wilmington Trust bowling league team, knitting, doing puzzles, and going to Delaware Park, however, her grandchildren were the light of her life. She is survived by her husband Benjamin; children, Karen Perrine, John France, and Susan France; sister, Inge Bigalaka of Germany; and 4 grandchildren, Joshua and Kara Perrine, Damonet’ Boyce, and Wyatt France. DOROTHY FUGATE
Dorothy B. Fugate Age 88, of Wilmington, DE passed away on August 20, 2009. She was the Wardrobe Supervisor for the NYC Ballet retiring in 1992 after 17 years service. Her husband, Clayton E. Fugate died in 1973. Dorothy is survived by her daughters, Jody Fugate of Wilmington, Judy Fugate-Bahiri and husband, Medhi of NYC, and Jana Fugate-Cummings of Greenfield, MA, and 3 granddaughters, Chrissy, Colleen, and Emma. MABEL FULTON
Mabel G. Fulton, age 90, passed away peacefully Friday, July 24, 2009 at the Christiana Hospital. Mabel was born in Mendenhall, PA and was the daughter of the late John and Sydney Griffith. She graduated from Kennett High. Mabel worked for DuPont as a secretary, retiring after 30 years of service. In her spare time, she enjoyed traveling the U.S. with her husband and family, playing cards with friends, and helped in fundraising efforts for the Yorklyn Community Pool, but her greatest joy in life was having her family over for Sunday dinner. Family meals were the highlight and center of Mabel’s life. Mabel was predeceased by her son John “Chip” Fulton, III and her brothers Charles and Hammond Griffith. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, John R. Fulton, Jr.; children, Ronald Alexander, James Alexander, Sandra Sue Steggell, Gary Fulton, Victoria “Bo” Cicione, and Brian Fulton; grandchildren, Debbie, Mark, Lisa, Paula, Susan, Geoffrey, John IV, Stephanie, Jessica, and Brian; and great-grandchildren, Taylor, Laura, Alex, Brett, Casey, Paige, Mark, Collin, and Jenna. Anita Furman Age of Newark, DE passed away on November 12, 2008. Mrs. Furman was preceded in death by her husband Eugene Furman in 2007. She is survived by her daughters Debi Bentley and her husband Rick and Jeanne O’Brian and her husband Steve. Grandchildren Stephanie and Matt Bentley and Shannon, Stephen, Sara Beth and Sean O’Brian brothers sisters. SARA FUTTY
Sara T. “Sally” Futty, age 87, died peacefully Tuesday, December 16, 2008, at Heartland Hospice House while her orchids were in bloom. In her own words shortly before she died she said, “I have had a good life and it’s okay if I die.” Born in Wilmington to the late Myrtle and Charles Heathcote, Sara was the homemaker of all homemakers. She will be remembered by her family for her spunk, energy, devotion to her cats, chocolate, and most of all her flowers, which encompassed the perimeter of her home. Sara was a member of the Millcreek and Cranston Heights Ladies Auxiliary as well as the Marshallton PTA. Sara was predeceased by her son, Dennis S. Futty in 1978. She is survived, and dearly missed, by her husband, Curtis S. Futty, Sr., with whom she eloped 70 years ago this past May; children, Curtis S. Futty, Jr. and his wife Lynn of Bridgeville, DE, Arleen Higgins and her husband Ray of Newark, DE, and Sally Ann King of Kekaha, HI; 6 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren. ERNEST F."ERNIE" GALE, JR.
Ernest F Gale, (Ernie) 65, of Garnet Valley, PA, passed away on Friday 13, 2009, at Crozer-Chester Medical Center, Chester, PA. He was the son of the late Ernest F Gale, Sr. and Dorothy H. Gale. Ernie married Carolyn Erb on June 16, 1965. He received his bachelor’s degree from Penn State University in 1965, and his Masters’ degree from the Naval Post Graduate School in 1971. Ernie loved his Savior, his family, and salt water fishing in Long Island, NY. He and his family lived in State College, PA from 1984 to 1998 and was an active member of the State College Christian & Missionary Alliance Church where he taught Sunday school and was a member of the Board of Elders. He retired from the US Navy in 1987, Penn State Alumni Association in 1998, University of New Hampshire Alumni Association in 2004. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn of Garnet Valley, PA; four daughters Jennifer Gale of Wilmington, DE, Chrissie Gale of Wilmington, DE, Sarah Gale Evers of Orlando, FL, and Carrie Gale of Wilmington, DE, and his mother Dorothy H. Gale, of Allentown, PA; one granddaughter, Elizabeth Gale. He was preceded in death by his father Ernest F. WILLIAM GALLAGHER
S/Sgt. William J. Gallagher Ret. August 1940 - _March 2009 Bill passed away on March 25, 2009. Bill was born in Camden, New Jersey and raised in Philadelphia, PA. He began his working career as a stock and delivery boy in an American Grocery Store (forerunner of the ACME Markets) at the age of 12. His Father, Maurice and Mother, Margaret (nee Stevenson) and sister, Maureen Diane Whiteman predeceased him. Bill’s beloved and beautiful wife Matilda (nee Green) passed away in April 2000 after 29 years of marriage. After moving with his family to Tinicum Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, Bill joined the Navy and served aboard the USS Everglades – AD24, USS Wren – DD 568, and the USS Wallace L. Lind – DD703. Bill served as a Machinist Mate/Water King. After leaving the Navy, Bill moved to Claymont with his Mother, Father and Sister. Bill worked at Sun Shipbuilding and Dry-dock, Electric Hose and Rubber, and Capitol Bakers, before being appointed as a County Police Officer in 1969. He was promoted to the rank of Sergeant in 1977 and retired in April of 1990 after 21 years of service. Bill then worked for the Delaware Division of Motor Vehicles. He retired from DMV in September of 2002 as Driver’s License Supervisor after 12 plus years of service. Bill volunteered much of his time to various organizations. He was a past Secretary and Chief Engineer of the Claymont Fire Co. He served as President, Secretary, Treasurer, Board of Directors and Chaplain of the New Castle County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5. Bill also served as Secretary of the Delaware State Lodge of the FOP and President of the Peikin Park Civic Association. Bill was a graduate of the 73rd AOC, the Southern Police Institute, and the University of Louisville. Bill is survived by a daughter Kelley Anne Caldwell, her husband Sam and son Dayton, a son Shawn Patrick, his wife Debra and a son William and daughter Jennifer all of VA, and a daughter Kathryn Mary Gallagher at home. He is also survived by his sister’s husband, Willard Whiteman and daughter Diane Marie, and numerous brother and sister in-laws, nieces and nephews. A viewing for family and friends will be on Tuesday, March 31 from 9-10 am at the MCCRERY MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 3710 Kirkwood Highway at Duncan Road followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 am at Holy Family Church, 15 Gender Rd., Newark, DE. 19713. Interment will be in All Saints cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the Family request donations to the Holy Family Church or Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Road, Wilm., DE 19810. S/Sgt. William J. GORDON GANN
Gordon L. Gann Age 88 of Wilmington, DE passed away on Jan 8, 2009. Gordon worked as a Field Manager for Kraft foods until his retirement. He is survived by his wife Mildred and a nephew, Dale Gann and his wife Dannie. A funeral service will be conducted at MCCRERY MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday Jan 27 where friends may call after 10:00 a.m. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to Delaware Hospice Inc., 3515 Silverside Rd., Wilmington, DE 19810
