Doris R. Heeney Age 84, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on June 6, 2009 at Heartland Hospice House. Doris retired as a bank teller from W.S.F.S. She was a Democratic Committee Woman and served on the Board of Directors of Naaman’s Little League. Doris enjoyed playing bridge and was an avid Duke Basketball and Philadelphia Phillies Fan. She also enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s sporting events. She was preceded in death by her husband, John G. Heeney and her sister, Geraldine Pierson. Doris is survived by her sister, Vernetta Johnson, her children, Kim Pugh, Kelly Prettyman and Kip Heeney and his wife Eileen, her grandchildren, Jacqueline, Duke, Derek, Ricky, Ryan, Brodie, Jordan and Carson and her great-grandchildren, Madison, Alena, Nathan and Chase. CARL HELBING
Carl Helbing Age 82 of Wilmington, DE passed away on May 22, 2009. Carl was a Navy Veteran of WW II. He was employed as an inspector with Electric Hose & Rubber retiring in 1976 after 17 years service. After retirement he was a clerk at Dunkirk Liquors until 1990. His wife of 53 years, Charlotte Helbing died in 2000 and his son, Bruce Helbing in 2008. Carl is survived by his grandson, Robert B. Helbing, daughter-in-law, Carol Helbing, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. KATHY HENRY
Katherine Delker Henry, a lifelong resident of the Wilmington area, died unexpectedly on May 19, 2009 after a short illness. She would have turned 50 next month. Kathy was a 1977 graduate of Concord High School, received a degree in Dental Hygiene from Delaware Technical & Community College, and earned her Bachelor’s Degree from West Chester University. After graduation, Kathy started her 29 year career as a Dental Hygienist working in the office of Dr. Paul Vieman, ultimately working for the past 20+ years for the dental practice of Dr. Alan R. Levine & Dr. Nadine L. Vaughan on Naamans Rd. At age 14, Kathy started pursuing her love of horses which has included training harness race horses, and, more recently riding Dressage at Wellspring Farm in Bellevue Park. She will be lovingly remembered by her family, friends and patients as a warm and engaging person with an exceptional capacity to care for others. Kathy is survived by her husband, Mark F. Henry; her mother, Joanne P. Delker; her brother, John G. Delker, III; her nephew, Sean P. Delker; and her niece, Brea Joelle Delker. She was preceded in death in 2008 by her father, John G. MINA HESS
Mina Larson Hess Age 106, of Foulk Manor North, Wilmington, DE died there on December 22, 2008. Mina was born on January 21, 1902 in Gonvick, MN in a two room log cabin on a homestead bordering the Red Lake Indian Reservation just below the Canadian border. Her parents (Reinhart and Paulene Larson) and older sister Astrid emigrated from Norway four months earlier. Their Boston to Minnesota train passed through Buffalo the same day that President McKinley was assassinated there - an event that Mina has always remembered! She graduated from Bemidji and Duluth Teachers Colleges and taught in a one room, six class school house a two mile walk from her family home. Her youngest sister Ann and children from the Red Lake Indian Reservation were among her students. In 1925 Mina married Edwin Maurice Hess of New Orleans, LA who was career Army. At that time married women were prohibited from teaching so she became a full time mother and homemaker. They lived in Duluth MN, Ames IA and Kansas City MO before World War II and in and around Ft. Riley, Kansas during the war. She held leadership roles in the PTA and Eastern Star and enjoyed playing bridge. After the war’s end, Edwin retired to Kansas City, MO from which they traveled extensively. Edwin died in 1959. Mina moved to Wilmington in 1994 and resided at Foulk Manor North. Mina outlived four sisters and four bothers. She is survived by two sons and daughters in-law: Sidney & Grayce of Chadds Ford, PA and Hubert & Linda of Okimos, MI; 5 grandchildren, Debra Hess Norris and Peter Hess of Wilmington, DE, Diana Hess-Fisher of Severna Park, MD, Melissa Hess Bartl of Alexandria, VA, and Meredith Hess of Portland, OR; and 6 great grandchildren; Sarah and Maggie Norris and Benjamin Hess Wilmington, DE, Paige and Brendon Fisher of Severna Park, MD, and Alexander James Bartl of Alexandria, VA. ELLEN HICKMOTT
Ellen H. Hickmott Age 88, of Wilmington died on Saturday, March 6. She was a native of Snow, Hill Maryland. She was a graduate of Snow Hill High School, Stuart Hall Preparatory School, and Wilson College. After living throughout the country with her family, she arrived in Wilmington in 1965 and was actively involved in many civic and social causes. She was a volunteer at Winterthur and Longwood Gardens and was active in local chapters of the AAUW, Women’s Sorority P.E.O., the Wilson College Alumna organization, Wilmington Flower Market, and Westminster Church. She was married to Joseph E. Hickmott Jr., who died in 2003. Mrs Hickmott is survived by her sons Joe Hickmott, of Charleston, SC, and Bob Hickmott, of Washington, DC. Additionally she is survived by three grandchildren. Visitation will be held at the MCCRERY MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 3924 Concord Pike, Wilmington on Tuesday, March 10, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Burial will be private. George W. Hitchens Age 83, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2009. Mr. Hitchens retired from the DuPont Company after 37 years of service. He was a veteran of WWII, having served in Europe with the Third Army. George is survived by his wife, Connie of 62 years: his sons, Thomas, William and John and two grandchildren, Shannon and Cody. He is also survived by 5 brothers, Paul, Donald, Robert, Thomas and James and 3 sisters, Joan and Rosalia Hitchens and Patricia Hearn. HOWARD LLOYD "BUD" HOFER
Howard Lloyd (Bud) Hofer Age 83, formerly of Wilmington, DE, passed away on Thursday, March 5, 2009 with his family at his side. Born in Wilmington, DE, Bud was the son of the late, Mr. & Mrs. Andrew D. Hofer. He graduated from Wilmington High School in 1943. Bud served in the Navy during World War II on the U.S.S. Hermitage. Later, he started his career at the Pusey and Jones Shipbuilding Company followed by 34 years working in the Engineering Department at Atlas Powder / Atlas Chemical / ICI Americas. While working, Bud also completed three years of Civil Engineering at the University of Delaware. Bud was devoted to his family and was an accomplished photographer. He enjoyed traveling around the country with his wife. Mr. Hofer is survived by his son, David A., and his wife, Julia of Newark, DE; a granddaughter, Andrea S. Danby and her husband F. Scott; a great grandson, Franklin Scott Danby, Jr., all of Cochranville, PA; and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. In addition to his parents, Bud was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years S. Virginia Hofer, a son, John H., a daughter, Susan, and a brother, Gordon Hofer. JOAN HOFFMANN
Joan C. Hoffmann Age 76, of Hockessin, DE, formerly of Blue Rock Manor, passed away on June 17, 2009. She was born in Wilmington, DE to the late Lillian and Walter Crawford. She retired as treasurer of Hoffmann & Hoffmann Inc. in Wilmington. Joan was a member of the Wilmington Shell Club, the Delaware Chapter, Multiple Sclerosis Society, and enjoyed traveling with her husband, Bill, to Russia, China, Egypt, Australia, Hawaii, and other islands. She spent summers at their home in Hazelmoor, MD on the Chesapeake Bay. Following the death of her husband of 49 years, William A. Hoffmann, she moved to Hockessin to be with her daughter. The past 6 years she has resided in Manor Care Pike Creek. She is also preceded in death by her step-father, Paul Vochezer and brother, Walter Crawford. Joan is survived by her daughter, Bennette H. White of Hockessin, brother, Albert Meyer (Delores) of Malvern, PA, grandson, Jesse Lemire of Hockessin and his girlfriend, Heather Ruby, and longtime friend, Rita Silberman. JAMES HOWELL
James L. Howell Age 72, passed away on Friday April 17 surrounded by his loving family. He was the son of the late Derwood and Ethel Howell. He retired from General Motors and served in several positions with the local chapter of the UAW. He was a life member of the Mill Creek Fire Department and served for many years as Ambulance and Rescue Service Captain. He was also a member of Faith Baptist Church. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and had a lifelong passion for music. He loved to play Bluegrass on his Martin guitar and played with the New River Boys, Carolina Ridge Runners, Ollabelle and Alex, Bill Monroe and Grandpa Jones. He also worked at Sunset Park in PA with many country notables including Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton. James was married to the love of his life, Eleanor who passed away in 2001. He is survived by his son, James D. Howell and his wife Mary and his grandson Gage. Also surviving are his brothers, Richard ,Dean and his wife Peggy, Davis and his wife Dottie, and Frank and his wife Ester; sisters, Jean Marrs, Anita Mertz, Joan Culbert and her husband Harry. Left to cherish his memory is his nephew Dave Bayles who also was his caretaker. A viewing will be held at MCCRERY MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 3710 Kirkwood Hwy. Blanchie Burney Hunter Age 79, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on September 16, 2009 at Heartland Hospice House. Burney was a graduate of St. Luke’s Nursing School in Richmond, VA. She had worked as a nurse for Dr. Donald Cameron. She was a member of St. James Episcopal Church, in Millcreek hundred where she taught Sunday school and volunteered at the bizarre. She enjoyed quilting, knitting and reading. Burney especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert H. Hunter. Burney is survived by her children, Clifford H. Hunter and his wife Kimberly, Katharine (Beth) Morris and her husband George and her grandchildren, Robert Symonds, Arwen Hunter, Nicole Symonds and Heather Morris. Jeannette W. Hurd Age 93, of Wilmington, DE passed away on January 20, 2009. She was a WAVE during WW II. Jeannette was a secretary for the DuPont Company, retiring in 1976 after 30 years service. She was a member of Peninsula-McCabe UM Church where she served on the Altar Guild and past secretary/treasurer of the Lo Se Sa Bible Class. She was also past president/treasurer of First State WAVES National. Her husband, Louis D. Hurd died in 1978. Jeannette is survived by several cousins including, Sherrill Weigel, Carrie and Wayne Smith, and Dwayne Turner. Marguerite Eldine “Marge” (nee Quebedeaux) Iacono, 84, of Wilmington, a retired RN from Crozer Chester Medical Center passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2009 at Shipley Manor, Wilmington. Born in Church Point, Louisiana , she resided in Ridley Park, PA for many years before retiring to Millsboro, DE. She later moved to North Wilmington to live with her son, and most recently lived at Shipley Manor. She enjoyed her family, cooking, traveling, reading, gardening, sewing, craft making, dominoes, and especially bowling. She was predeceased by her late husband, Frank Eugene Iacono in 1983, and her dear friend, Joseph C. Walsh in 2001. She is survived by her sons, Gregory Iacono and his wife Mary Ann of North Wilmington, Mark Iacono of Charlotte, N.C., and Steven Iacono of Coatesville, PA; daughter, Lela DiPietro of Birdsboro, PA; one grandson, Gregory Beard of PA; one sister, Vina Demarest of Louisiana; and many nieces and nephews. She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church. She expressed her faith that she trusted in The Lord Jesus Christ for the salvation of her soul. Jami Raye Ingerson, 41, of Hockessin, passed away at her home on May 1, 2009 with her beloved family and friends by her side. Jami was born in Cleveland, Ohio and spent her early years in Puerto Rico, West Chester, N.Y., and Cazenovia , N.Y. where she graduated from Cazenovia High School in 1986. She then attended the University of Maryland, graduating in 1991 with a degree in Business. Jami spent her professional career as a Financial Advisor working for A.G. Edwards, now Wells Fargo. However, her most rewarding roles were as wife and mother. She loved the theater, both as a patron and as a participant – especially performing with her friends in improv. Jami felt that everyone needs to laugh and will be fondly remembered for her own infectious laugh and engaging smile. She loved skiing, sailing, tennis, frequent weekends in N.Y.C., and spending time with her family and friends. Jami is survived by her husband of 16 years, Douglas V. Ingerson; daughter, Tessa Rose Ingerson; her father, Thomas Senff; 1 brother, John Senff; 1 sister, Pam Wheeler; and her Aunt Arlene. She was preceded in death by her mother, Lois Senff. Joseph Francis Jamison Sr. Age 92 of Wilmington, DE passed away May 10, 2009 Joseph was born in Wilmington to the late Robert and Margaret O Hara Jamison A graduate of Wilmington HS and attended the University of Delaware and Wharton School Pennsylvania Joseph served in the U.S. Army’s 70th Field Artillery. The Co founder of Brandywine Nurseries in 1946, he was formally the Forester for the City of Wilmington. One of the founding Members of the Delaware Nursery and Landscape Association, Joseph was inducted in the DNLA Hall of Fame in 1995. He was an avid Golfer and loved to winter with friends in Fla. Joseph is survived by his children Joseph F. Jr., Brien and his wife Betsy, Ellen Kullman and her husband Michael, all of Wilmington, and Mary Chris Parsons and her husband Jay of Dove Canyon, CA He is also survived by 7 grandchildren, Mathew Parsons, Becky,Meg and Brien Jamison and Maggie, David and Stephen Kullman. He was preceded in death by his wife Margaret, his sister Eleanor and his brothers Robert and Francis. RUTH JENKINS
Ruth Bruen Jenkins, 93, a former resident of Fairfax and Brandywood, died peacefully on June 6, 2009 at her residence in the Methodist Country House. Born in Baltimore, MD to the late Arthur J. and Helen V. Bruen, Ruth was a 1932 graduate of Wilmington High School, a 1935 graduate of Goldey College, and a 1957 graduate of Temple University Teachers’ College. Ruth was very proud to have been the first person in Delaware to receive certification as a Certified Professional Secretary. She started her 41 year career at Goldey College (now Goldey Beacom) as a teacher, then became secretary to the President, and retired in 1975 as Director of Employment. She was very talented with hand crafts, and after her retirement, she enjoyed needle pointing, chair caning, making lamp shades and decorative painting. She loved to travel, and travelled extensively in the U.S. and Europe with her late husband, Mark and her late sister, Helen Mae. Ruth also loved to dance and she and her husband were avid ballroom dancers. Ruth was the past Worthy Matron of the Julia M. Story Chapter # 3, Order of the Eastern Star and was an honorary member of Bethel Chapter #1 of Job’s Daughters. Ruth is survived by her brother, George V. Bruen; her sister-in-law, Margie Schoch; 2 nieces, Ruth M. Govatos and Lana Gill; 4 nephews, George C. Govatos (Elaine), James A. Govatos (Judy), and Arthur J. Bruen, III (Louanne) and Larry Woodward; 2 grand-nephews, Aaron M. Govatos (Jennifer) and David B. Govatos (Joanne); 1 grand-niece, Margo Govatos Stein; 1 great-grand -nephew, Ryan; and her beloved dog Sandy. She was preceded in death in 1985 by her husband, Mark E. Jenkins; in 1992 by her brother, James A. Bruen; in 2005 by her sister, Helen Mae Govatos; in 2004 by her great-niece, Laura A. Govatos; and in 1985 by her half-brother, Arthur J. Bruen, Jr.. George B. Johnson, Jr. Age 83, of Wilmington, DE passed away on August 24, 2009 at his home. He was a Navy veteran of WW II. George was a patrolman with the City of Wilmington Police Department retiring in 1972 after 20 years service. He also retired from Cokesbury Village as the Maintenance Manager. He was a member of Peniel U.M. Church, D.A.P., F.O.P., Davis Deer Lodge in Georgetown, DE, N.R.A., and the WWII Memorial. His wife, B. Lavenia Johnson died in 1997. George was a loving Husband, Father, Grandfather, Great Grandfather, and a friend to all. George is survived by his daughters, Patricia Riley (Harold), Lavenia Hughto (John), Carolyn McCloud (John), and Kathleen Johnson (Chuck); brother, Ellis Johnson, and sister, Mabel Bailey, 7 grandchildren, and 15 great grandchildren. Lorraine M. Johnson Age 80, of Wilmington, DE passed away on March 17, 2009. Born in Bristol, England, Lorraine moved to the United States in 1945 with her American husband as she was a W.W.II bride. She was a devoted and loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Lorraine was also an avid bridge player. Lorraine was preceded in death by her parents Gertrude and Percy Miles and her husband Walter S. “Wally” Johnson, Sr. She is survived by her 5 children, Walter Scott Johnson, Jr. of Rehoboth Beach, DE., Miles F. Johnson of Wilmington, Cary P. Johnson and his wife Beth of Albany, NY, Christopher W. Johnson and Victoria Johnson Boyer, both of Wilmington; her grandchildren, Kimberly Johnson Jamison and husband Peter, Heather Johnson Dwyer and husband Ted, Timothy A. Johnson and wife Beth, Betsy Johnson Kranz and husband Rick, Sara Johnson, Brandon L. Boyer, April Johnson and 12 great grandchildren. A viewing will be held on Friday March 20, 2009 from 10-11 am. in the McCrery Memorial Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike Wilmington, 19803 followed by a service at 11am. Entombment will be in Cathedral cemetery, Lancaster Pike Wilmington. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Delaware Humane Society, 701 A St., Wilmington, DE 19801.

Margaret Anne Johnson Age 77, of Hockessin, DE passed away on June 19, 2009. She is survived by her brothers, George B. Johnson, Jr. of Wilmington, and Ellis B. Johnson of Dover, 1 sister, Mabel Bailey of Delmar, DE, and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 23 at 11:00 am at the chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, Dupont Highway, New Castle where friends may call after 10:15.
