SANDI JONES
SANDRA SCHOY JONES Sandi Jones, born June 25, 1942, passed away peacefully with her husband and sons at her side on April 6, 2009, after a long illness. Born to Harry Schoy and Catherine Elizabeth Spicer Schoy Koster at Memorial Hospital, Wilmington, DE, Sandi was a graduate of A.I. DuPont High School; received her R.N. at the Roxborough School of Nursing in Philadelphia; her B.S.Ed. from West Chester University; and her M.S.Ed. from Wilmington College. Sandi retired from Marbrook Elementary School after 21 years as a school nurse with the Red Clay Consolidated School District. Prior to a hiatus to raise her family, Sandi had been an instructor at the St. Francis School of Nursing in Wilmington. Previously she had worked as an operating room nurse at both Memorial Hospital in West Chester, PA, and at the Alfred I. DuPont Children’s Hospital. She had also worked for number of years as a substitute school nurse in the Brandywine School District. A past president of the Northminster Civic Association, chairman of the Citizens’ Advisory Council at Lancashire Elementary School, and member of the Brandywine School District CAC, Sandi was proud to be a native Delawarean and a strong supporter of her extended family and friends. Sandi was a member of the First Unitarian Church of Delaware. A Life Member of The Brandywiners, Ltd., where she met her future husband, Frazer, and enjoyed the excitement of being on stage with her entire family, Sandi also appeared with The Lyceum Players, The Chapel Street Players, Arena Stages, The Alumni Theatre Association and The Breck’s Mill Cronies. An avid road rallyist, public speaker and gourmet cooking enthusiast, Sandi never stopped taking on new projects and crafts, and at the time of her last hospitalization was in the process of painting and caulking her laundry room. Sandi is survived by her husband of 38 years, Frazer Jones; her sons, Michael Barret Jones and partner Kerry Ashforth of Brooklyn, NY, and Cameron Burke Jones of New Castle; sister Victoria Schoy Wiedwald and her husband Gary of Wilmington; nieces Alexis Weidwald Oravec and husband Chris and Catherine Wiedwald Stenta and husband Rob; and nephew Nathan Robert Weidwald and his wife Priscilla; and five great nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her son Gary Durant Jones in 1998. Betty Slicer Kania Age 86, of Frederica, DE formerly of Wilmington passed away in KGH, Bayhealth in Dover on May 9, 2009 after a long illness. Mrs. Kania attended A.I. DuPont High School and Goldey Beacom Business School. She worked for Commercial Credit until she retired in 1975. Since retiring she devoted herself to her family. She was a member of St. Mark’s U.M. Church, the DAR, and had a passion for genealogy. She loved to go to Delaware Park. She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Joseph J. Kania, her parents, Lewis C. Slicer & Laura D. Stephens Slicer, and her siblings, Lewis C. Slicer, Jr., Emily O’Donald, and Katheryn Becker. Betty is survived by her children, Joann Patterson (George), and Paul J. Kania (Maureen); her grandchildren, Kelly Hough (Mark), Michael Patterson (Renee), Jenny Maher (Steve), and Joseph, Amy, and Clarke Kania; and great-grandchildren, Mark Jr., and Alexsandra Hough, and baby girl Maher due in early July. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews, especially Curt Slicer, Jr. and Lois Huffman. CARL KARLSSON
Carl E. Karlsson, age 82, a longtime resident of Delaware passed away on April 17, 2009 at home. Carl was born in Welsh West Virginia, the eldest child of the late Carl E. Karlsson and Anna Karlsson. Raised in Arden, DE, he graduated from PS DuPont High School and was a 1965 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania. Carl worked as a financial analyst for ICI, currently Astra Zeneca, retiring in 1990 after 32 years. . He was a WWII Army veteran. Carl was preceded in death by his wife Pauline Beckwith Karlsson and his sister, Greta Reed. He is survived by his children, Erik (Lucy) and Christina Allen (Tom), his brother, Ejnar H. Karlsson and his grandchildren, Lucy, Emily, Julia and Lydia. Pauline Beckwith Karlsson, a longtime resident of Delaware, died on February 26, 2009, with her family at her side. Pauline was born in Harrington, DE, the youngest child of the late William T. and Anna Lee Beckwith. Raised in Cecilton, MD, she graduated in 1937 from George Biddle High School, Cecilton, and then graduated from Beacom College, Wilmington. Pauline worked as a legal secretary for the DuPont Company, retiring in 1980 after 17+ years. Pauline is survived by her husband of 58 years, Carl E.; their 2 children, Erik (Lucy) and Christina Allen (Tom); and 4 grandchildren, Lucy, Emily, Julia and Lydia. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Harold, Lee, William and Russell Beckwith, and her sisters, Helen Harrington, Gertrude Rust and Ruth Dayton. The funeral service will be held at 11am, Wednesday, March 4 at the McCrery Memorial Funeral Home, 3924 Concord Pike, Talleyville (Route 202, south of Silverside Rd.), where friends may call after 10:30. Fannie J. Kauffman Fannie J. Kauffman died on July 21, 2009. Born in VA to the late Virgil & Bessie Thompson, she spent most of her childhood in Ashe Co. N.C. She worked for the Hosiery Mill in West Grove, PA for years before marrying Rev. Paul Kauffman. She then was a devoted pastor’s wife for 25 years. She loved people and enjoyed entertaining. Fannie was predeceased by her siblings Grace, Lorraine, Carrie, Edith, Clarence, Charles and husbands Walter D. Griffitts in 1943 and Rev. Paul Kauffman in1999. Fannie is survived by her son Robert and wife Beverly; grandson Walter and wife Lori; great grandchildren Madison, John and Caleb; her step children, Rev. Donald Kauffman and wife Dee, Joanne Graybeal and husband Morris and all their children; her sister Mabel and many nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held on Friday July 24, 2009 at 11 am. in the McCrery Memorial Chapel, 3710 Kirkwood Highway at Duncan Rd. Wilmington, 19808. Mary M. Kazio Age 97 of Wilmington, De passed away peacefully on April 9, 2009 at the home of her nephew Bill Krauss and his wife Edie. Mark Andrew Kelleher Age 41, of Wilmington, Delaware, beloved husband, father, son and brother, passed away suddenly on December 8, 2008. Mark was surrounded by family and friends at Christiana Hospital. Mark was born in Wilmington. A 1985 Salesianum graduate, Mark went on to work for Delmarva Power. During the majority of his 20 year career, Mark took tremendous pride working as a First Class Lineman with the company. Mark is survived by the love of his life, wife Ida (Dee) Kelleher (Jacono); children Michael and Marci; parents Andrew and Kathryn of Newark, formerly of Claymont; brothers Andy “Jim” (Sharon), Daniel, and Brian (Kimberly); along with 12 nieces and nephews; and many other dear friends and family members. He was preceded in death by his sister Kathleen Jo, and a brother Michael Sean. Richard B. Kendig Age 87, of Wilmington, DE passed away on May 28, 2009. He was a Customer Service Representative for Delaware Cadillac in Wilmington for many years. Richard was a member of Concord Presbyterian Church where he was an Elder, Deacon, and long time choir member. He was also a 32nd degree Mason with the Granite-Corinthian Lodge # 34, and an Army veteran of WW II. He is survived by his wife, Jane Kendig, 1 son, Rodney Lee Kendig and his wife, Paula of Pensacola, FL, 1 daughter, Brenda Lee Gregory and her husband, Ronald of Jackson, NJ, 9 grandchildren, and 8 great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Monday, June 1, 2009 at 11:00 am at Concord Presbyterian Church, 1800 Fairfax Boulevard, Wilm., DE 19803 where friends may call after 10:15 and a Masonic service will be held at 10:45. MARY KEPHART
Mary S. Kephart died peacefully on November 22, 2008 at the Christiana Hospital in the company of her immediate family. She was born July 26, 1927 to Dan C. and Mahala Moss Smedley in Salt Lake City, Utah. She attended the Salt Lake City public schools and graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in education in 1949. She and her husband briefly made their first home in Schenectady, NY. They moved to the Wilmington area in December, 1949. They have lived in the Wilmington area since then except for a period from 1952 to 1955 when they were located in Aiken, South Carolina. During her early years here she was active in her Phi Mu Sorority Alumnae group and with the Wilmington Panhellenic Association. She joined the Junior Board of the old Wilmington General Division in 1966 and remained active there and later at Christiana Hospital until health problems forced her to seek inactive emeritus status last year. For many years her friendly smile, cheerful voice and sharp sense of humor were a welcoming help to many people seeking assistance at the Information Desk at Christiana Hospital on Tuesday mornings. In addition to her husband, John T. Kephart, Jr., she is survived by a brother, Dan H. Smedley of Salt Lake City; two daughters, Mahala Kephart, her companion Thure Cerling of Salt Lake City and Amanda Limpert, her husband George of West Chester;and two grandchildren, Steven Limpert of Tempe, Arizona and Sharon Limpert of West Chester. Janet Dougherty Ketterer, Age 94, of Wilmington, DE, died on Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at Forward Manor, Wilmington, DE. Janet was born and raised in West Philadelphia and graduated from West Catholic Girls’ High School. A child of the Depression, she lived at home and traveled daily by train to attend Rosemont College, where she performed in theatre and was active in debating circles, ultimately graduating in 1936 with a B.A. in English Literature. Janet was a copywriter for several advertising agencies and department stores in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Cleveland and Chicago. A freelance writer, she authored many magazine articles. A bright and cultured lady, (she prided herself in completing each Sunday New York Times crossword puzzle – in ink) Janet was an avid bridge player and enjoyed poetry, literature and the theater. She had strong political convictions and was proud to be an FDR New Deal Democrat. Always challenging herself, she took up golf later in her life and she took great delight in the beach and ocean. Janet’s husband of 45 years, Theodore Ketterer, Jr. died in 1986. She is survived by their 4 children, Theodore Ketterer of Waban, Mass., Julie Ketterer of Shaker Heights, OH, Tony Ketterer of Wilmington, Paul Ketterer of Lombard, IL; 6 grandchildren, Julia, Jennifer, Lucy, Kasey, Caitlin and Michael; 7 great-grandchildren, Andrew, T.J., Cameron, Jackson, Virginia, Gillian and Amanda; her niece, Janet; and her nephew, Larry. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her infant son, Charles, and her sister, Ruth Grim. L. Justin Keyser Age 83, of Hockessin, DE passed away on May 30, 2009. He was a 1950 graduate of the University of Delaware. Justin was an Army Veteran of WW II serving in the Philippines and Korea. He was a Structural Engineer for L.H. Doane and Associates for 26 years and retired in 1990 from Hercules, Inc. after 14 years service. He was an active member of Hockessin United Methodist Church, enjoyed baseball, bowling, U of D football, baseball cards and autographs, photography, and model railroading. His wife, Frances Keyser died in 1982. Justin is survived by his son, Kevin Keyser of Houston, TX and a niece, Susan Lodge of Yorklyn, DE. Robin Owens Kight, 48, of Ellendale, DE, passed away on Monday, June 8, 2009, at her residence in Wilmington, DE. She was born in Milford, the daughter of the late, Morris B. Owens, Jr. and Mildred R. (Courtland) Owens. She was an Investment Accounting Manager with PFPC in Wilmington. Robin was a member of the West Chester Church of the Nazarene. She was preceded in death by her parents; her two sisters, Grace Kay Owens and Joann Brittingham. She is survived by her husband, Nicholas A. Kight; her brothers James H. Margaret S. Kilbride, age 87, died Saturday, August 15, 2009 at the Wilmington Hospital. She retired from Happy Harry’s after many years of service. Margaret’s passion was golfing, and she filled her spare time hitting the links at what is formerly known as Hercules Golf Course until the age of 80. Margaret was also an avid bridge player, and was a member of 4 bridge groups. Among other things, she volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House, was a Deacon at Concord Presbyterian Church, and never missed a chance to catch one of her favorite Philadelphia sports teams. She was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, John W. Kilbride, and 2 brothers, Clarence and Robert Lister. Margaret is survived by her 3 children, Diane K. Davis of Chester Springs, PA, John W. Kilbride of Wilmington, DE, and Lynne K. Storti and her husband, Steve, of Newtown Square, PA; brother, John Lister; 3 grandchildren, Jennifer Foltz, Bethany Davis, and Aimee Couto; and 4 great-grandchildren. Florence B. Knieriem 76,of Wilmington, DE died suddenly at home on March 21 2009. She was born and raised in rural Somerset County, Pennsylvania and moved to Delaware in the early 1960’s with her family. She graduated from Indiana University (PA) and taught Home Economics both in rural central Pennsylvania and Delaware before retiring. Home and family were most important to her so she enjoyed teaching young women how to run a household. She was a member of Newark Senior Center and the Wilmington Church of the Brethren, Richardson Park. She enjoyed doing crafts, playing Scrabble and bridge, and was also an expert seamstress. Her favorite baseball team was the Phillies. She gave tender loving care to each of her two husbands during their lengthy illnesses that preceded their deaths: Thomas R. Phillips, in July 1978 and her second husband, Homer Knieriem in January 1997. She is survived by her children: Douglas Phillips of Frederick Md., Michael Phillips of Wilmington, DE. and Beth Phillips Brown of Media, PA.; Homer's children: Donald Knieriem, Homer Knieriem, Jr. and Robert Knieriem of Wilmington, DE. and Deborah Cuomo of Bear DE.; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Two of five siblings survive her: Bill Baughman of Belleville, PA. and Dorothy Baughman of Garnet Valley, PA. Jessie L. Knowles “Babe” Age 90, died peacefully on Saturday, March 28, 2009. Jessie was born and raised in Wilmington and graduated from Wilmington HS. She worked in retail and retired from Strawbridge and Clothier after 26 years. She was a lifelong member of the First Assembly of God Church. She enjoyed cooking, crafts, camping at the beach and most of all, spending time with her beloved family. Jessie was the daughter of the late Thomas and Flora Holmes. She was predeceased by her husband, Martin H. “Knobby” Knowles who died in 1997. She is survived by her sons, Martin H., Jr. and his wife Joann of New Castle and Thomas R. and his wife Patti of Wilmington; her daughters, Rebecca A. Knowles of New Castle, Patricia A. ROSEMARIE KOBOS Rosemarie Kobos, 56, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on May 2, 2009 at her home in Brandywood, surrounded by her family. A lifelong avid reader, Rose spent most of her 25 years in Delaware sharing her love of books with the community. She worked for 20 years as a paraprofessional in the libraries of Maple Lane and Brandywood elementary schools, and also did a great deal of volunteer work, both in the public school system and for the New Castle County public libraries. Throughout her life, Rose enjoyed taking trips to Delaware’s beaches, and spending time with her many friends and family. She is survived by her husband, Robert, and her two children, Jared and Ryan (Lauren) Kobos. She is also survived by her mother, Margaret Edbauer, and by her siblings: Frances (Patrick) Gormley, Howard (Lynne) Edbauer, Pamela (Michael) Ball, Michelle Perry, and Sandra Edbauer. Loren Walter Kunkle Age 81, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on June 2, 2009 at home. Mr. Kunkle was born in Kunkle, PA. He served in the U.S. Army as a medical technician from 1945-1947. He was a member of Cedars United Methodist Church and the U.A.W. Local 1183. Loren retired from the Chrysler Corp. after 36 years. He was also a member of Unity Lodge A.F. & A.M., the Delaware Consistory, Delta Chapter # 10, Royal Arch Masons and Gunning Bedford Council and was awarded the Grand Lodge Award in 2001. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Betty, his daughters, Diane and Lewis Lafferty and their children, Patrick and Kristin of Wilmington, DE, Linda and Andrew Doman, Esq. and their children Loren, Christopher and Eric of St. Maries, ID and Sandra and James Carney, M.D. and their children, Julia and Sarah of Baton Rouge, LA. He is also survived by his sisters, Martha Pink, Ida Small, Joan Gery and her husband Allen and his sister-in-law Mildred Warren.
