Gilbert J. Carey Jr., 79, of Lewes and formerly of Gloucester City, N.J., died Tuesday, Aug, 10, 2004.
Mr. Carey was a veteran of World War II and a recipient of the Purple Heart. He was a 50-year member of Cloud Lodge AF&AM, member of the 106th Army Infantry Battalion Alumni Association and the Gloucester City Old Timers.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marian Black Carey; and a sister, Gertrude Orlando.
He is survived by three daughters, Gail L. Carey and her husband David Plummer, Carol L. Carey-Lee and her husband William E. Lee Jr. and Colleen L. Rosa and her husband Elbert J. Rosa; a son, Grant J. Carey and his wife, Cathy S. Carey; a sister, Frances Sammons; eight grandchildren, Allison and Scott Plummer, Andrea, Marissa and Jared Carey; Peter and Janine Rosa and Brenton Lee; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Burial was private.
Winnie Schechinger Cummings,
clairvoyant counselor
Winnie Schechinger Cummings, 68, of Stanton and Lewes, died Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, in Sunrise Assisted Living, Wilmington.
Mrs. Cummings was a mother, homemaker and clairvoyant counselor who wrote the Psychic Mailbox, a newspaper column. Over the course of 30 years, she assisted many people in their personal and professional endeavors. She had articles published about her in “Delaware Today,” “The Philadelphia Inquirer,” “The Newark Post” and “The News Journal.”
She enjoyed painting, music, helping others and the Philadelphia Eagles.
She was preceded in death by her companion, Frank Lewis, in 2001; and a brother, Al Cummings, in 2003.
She is survived by her four sons, Michael Urban, Kenneth Urban, Paul Schechinger and Chris Schechinger; four daughters, Anita Simkins, Kathleen Urban, Lisa Urban and Theresa Santoro; two brothers, Ed Cummings Sr. and Jim Cummings; a sister, Mary Jane Anker; and 13 grandchildren.
Friends may call from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Friday, in Nichols-Gilmore Funeral Home, 212 E. Justis Street, Newport. Services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, in St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, 1700 Limestone Road, Wilmington, with burial in Gracelawn Memorial Park, North DuPont Highway, New Castle.

Martha M. Miller,
retired teacher
Martha M. Miller, 69, of Seaford, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, at the Methodist Manor House in Seaford.
Mrs. Miller was born in Tyrone, Pa., the daughter of Anthony and Virginia Mannino. She retired from the Seaford School District, where she was a teacher in the Central Elementary School. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Seaford.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert K. Miller, who died in 1982; and her daughter, Paula Adrion, who died in 1994.
She is survived by two sons, Mark Miller of Salisbury, Md. and Anthony Miller of Annapolis, Md.; a daughter, Roberta Knapik of Jacksonville, Fla.; a sister, Cathy Hoover of Tyrone, Pa.; and her special friend, Dan Garguilo of Lewes; six grandchildren, Anna Adrion, Stephanie Adrion, Andrew Miller, Valerie Miller, Kaitlyn Miller and Sam Miller.
A funeral mass will be offered at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 27, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Stein Highway, Seaford.

Richard G. Piunti,
retired FAA inspector
Richard G. Piunti, 74, of Newark, died peacefully Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, in the presence of his family.
Mr. Piunti worked at Boeing-Vertol for 33 years in quality control and as an FAA inspector. He served in the Army in Germany from 1951-53 and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 473.
He was preceded in death by his son, Robert Piunti, who died Aug. 26, 2002.
He will be dearly missed by his wife of 20 years, Barbara Ann; sons, Richard Jr. of New Castle, Christopher of Wilmington, Jonathan of Elkton, Md. and his friend Lisa Kreske of New Castle, Michael and his wife Pam of Aston, Pa.; a daughter, Kasi Piunti of Newark; stepson, Brian LaClair of Bear; stepdaughters Sandy Mergenthaler and her husband John of Ambler, Pa., Cindy Groux and her husband Bobby of Newark, Lori Hurst of Newark; a sister, Madalyn P. Humphery and her husband Fritz of Wilmington; a daughter-in-law, Robin Piunti of Lewes; 15 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Services were held at Nichols-Gilmore Funeral Home, Newport, with burial in Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery , Bear.

Henrietta B. Fleetwood Eaton,
Humane society founder
Henrietta B. Fleetwood Eaton, 8, of Easton, Md. and formerly of Denton, died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, in William Hill Manor, Easton.
Mrs. Easton was born in Caroline County, Md., daughter of the late Elmer B. Blades and Mamie Trice Blades. She had lived in Caroline, Queen Anne’s and Talbot Counties all of her life.
She was a very active member of St. Luke’s United Methodist Church in Denton, where she was a Martha Circle member. She was also one of the founders of the Caroline County Humane Society.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas Carville Fleetwood Sr., April 5, 1973; her second husband, Joseph M. Eaton, Sept. 2, 1985; a granddaughter, Christina Blades Fleetwood; and a sister, Rebecca Chambers.
She is survived by a son, Thomas C. Jr. of Easton; a daughter, Mary Anne Fleetwood of Rehoboth Beach; and three grandchildren, Thomas Hunter, Caroline Elizabeth and Andrew Isaac.
Services were held at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Denton, with burial in the Denton cemetery.

William D. Masten Jr.,

William D. Masten Jr., 65, of Quinwood, W. Va., died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, following a long illness, at home.
Mr. Masten was born Oct. 11, 1938 in Dover, the son of the late William Day Masten Sr. and Elizabeth Donophan Masten.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a former technician for cable television in Dover.
Mr. Masten loved spending time with his family and friends and was of the Protestant faith.
He is survived by his wife, Shelbie Nutter Masten; two daughters and sons-in-law, Diane Lynn and Robert Garrett of Rochester, Pa. and Jeannette Ann and Kevin Pochopien of Oxford, Pa.; a son, William Ray Masten of Felton; six sisters and five brothers-in-law, Louise and Jerry Fry of Lewes, Jeannette and Gerald Cullen of Dover, Dorcus Beaucheau of Oklahoma City, Okla., Eleanor and Robert Eckley of Cleveland, Ohio, Betty and Claude Clay of Bedford, Texas, and Vivian and Vince Catalanatto of Ocean Springs, Miss.; five brothers and four sisters-in-law, John and Florence Masten and Frederick and Kristina Masten, all of Dover, Charles and Judy Masten of Harrington, Harry Gene and Fran Masten and Jerry Masten, all of Dover; two grandchildren, Christy Leah Harvey and Benjamin Popchopien; and many nieces, nephews and an aunt.
Services were held in Wallace and Wallace Chapel, Rainelle, Md., with burial in Wallace Memorial cemetery , Clintonville, Md.
George B. “Buck” Denney Jr.,

George B. “Buck” Denney Jr., 76, of Lewes, passed away after a long illness, in his home, on Aug. 23, 2004, surrounded by his family.
George is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jane Denney; a daughter, Sharon Denney of Newark; and two sons, George R. Denney III and his wife Penny of Laurel and Jerry Denney and his wife Barbara of Newark; and three grandchildren, Erin Denney, Jerry Denney Jr. and Blair Denney.
Services will be held at noon, Friday, Aug. 27, at Short Funeral Services, Georgetown, with burial in St. Peter’s cemetery , Lewes.

Arleen Davis, 65, of Lewes, died Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, at home.
Mrs. Davis had been a nursing home manager for the state of Alaska. She was born in Alaska and was the daughter of the late Richard and Margaret Crane Harris.
She was a member of Conley’s Chapel United Methodist Church, near Lewes.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Everette Davis, died Jan. 22, 2004.
She is survived by two sons, Kevin T. Davis of Rehoboth Beach and Ricky T. Goodman of Lewes; a sister Betty White of Gustavus, Alaska; a stepdaughter, Ariana Butz of Strassburg, Pa.; and two stepgrandchildren.
Services and burial will be private.

Bernice Miller,
Crab Pot employee
Bernice Miller, 77, of Rehoboth Beach, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes, surrounded by those who loved her.
Mrs. Miller was born Oct. 18, 1926 in Pinetown, daughter of the late Abraham White and Marguarite White. She spent her childhood in Pinetown. She completed her education in Lewes.
She worked for the Crab Pot in Rehoboth Beach for more than 20 years and retired from the Rehoboth Beach Country Club.
She was a lover of life. She greatly enjoyed cooking, going to yard sales and eating. Her home and her heart were shared to many who loved to eat her meals, pies and cakes. She was a mother, nurturer to all those who she knew and brought up.
Mrs. Miller was a devoted member of the Mount Pleasant AME Church and the Sunshine Circle Club for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Fred Miller Sr.
She is survived by two daughters, Brenda M. White of Rehoboth Beach and Louise Farmer of Milton; two sons, Fred Miller Jr. of Georgia and Mather Miller of Pinetown; five sisters, Naomi Perry, Eleanor Reed, Ruth Turner and Thelma White, all of Pinetown, and Grace Thomas of Lewes; a brother, Herman White of Georgia; a sister-in-law, Edna Miller of Rehoboth Beach; 10 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives.
Services were held in Mount Pleasant AME Church, Rehoboth Beach, with burial in People’s Memorial Park, Midway.
Thomas F. Walsh,
retired educator
Thomas F. Walsh, 73, of Harbeson, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at home.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., he had lived in Spring Lake and Avon by the Sea, N.J. before coming to Harbeson in 1994.
Mr. Walsh graduated from Asbury Park High School and went on to teach special education at Asbury Park High School for 30 years before retiring in 1994. While at Asbury High, he coached the JV soccer team and assisted with set design for the Drama Club’s presentatins. He was a soccer referee and in 1993, he received his 25-year service award from the Shore Soccer Officials Association. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He received a bachelor of arts degree in 1958 and a master’s degree in 1963, both from Monmouth College.
He is survived by his companion of eight years, Elfriede Kerstetter of Ocean City, Md.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Thomas A. and Gina Morelli Walsh of Sarasota, Fla. and Ken Walsh of Jackson, N.J.; a brother-in-law, Charles Benter of Macon, Ga.
Services were held at Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro, with burial private.
Orin F. “Jim” Burdette Sr.,
retired letter carrier
Orin F. “Jim” Burdette, 72, of Harbeson, formerly of Gaithersburg, Md., died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004 at home.
He was born July 27, 1932, son of the late Orin Foster Burdette Sr. and Margaret Redmon Burdette in Dickerson, Md.
Mr. Burdette had been employed in civil service as a rural letter carrier in the Gaithersburg area for 34 years, retiring in 1987. He had also been a barber for more than 45 years in the Maryland and Delaware area. He was a devoted member of the Lions Club for more than 40 years, aspiring through the various officers’ positions to regional, while in Maryland. During his time with the Lions he was involved in many and various programs, including the beginning of the Midway Lions Club in 1999. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was very active in the Democratic Party and most recently as chair of the 14th District.
He is survived by his wife, Rosemary Watkins Burdette; daughters, Kay, Jill, Lori, Teri, Jacki and Karen; and their children Jessica, Jamie, Sara, William, Kevin and Jake; special stepdaughter, Brenda and her children Dustin and Amanda; and five brothers and sisters.
Services were held at Parsell Funeral Homes and Crematorium, with burial in Mount Olivet cemetery , Frederick, Md.
