MARY LABEREE
Mary C. Laberee, 92, of Wilmington, died on April 13, 2009 after a short illness. Daughter of the late Patrick and Agnes Donahue, Mrs. Laberee was born and raised in Milton, Massachusetts and was a graduate of Boston University and Boston University Law School. When in Law School, Mary was the only woman in her class, which was emblematic of her intelligence, determination and quiet dignity. Her professional accomplishments included work with various federal agencies during World War II and with private law firms. She married the late John Laberee, a DuPont Company employee, with whom she raised three children in the Cedarcroft neighborhood of Kennett Square. Upon the birth of their first child, Mary devoted herself to civic matters, including the League of Women Voters and environmental issues, and to various school-related activities. For the past decade, she was a resident of the Methodist Country House and included many of its residents and staff members among her friends. A proponent of lifelong learning, Mrs. Laberee read, with enthusiasm, the Wall Street Journal and news magazines until her final illness. She also enjoyed sewing and embroidery and took pride in her needlework. Her husband, John A. Laberee died in 1995. She is survived by her daughter, Mary Jane Lang of Wilmington, and two sons, John of Downingtown, PA and Peter of Medford, NJ; seven grandchildren; her sister, Rose Smithers of Massachusetts; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10am, Friday, April 17 at St. Joseph’s on the Brandywine Catholic Church, 10 Old Church Rd., Wilmington, where friends may call after 9:30am. Also, a memorial service will be held at 2pm, Friday, April 17 at the Danby Chapel of the Methodist Country House, 4830 Kennett Pike, Wilmington. Interment will be private. DEBORAH LASKEY
Deborah Lynn Laskey (nee Gaunt), age 52, died Thursday May 21, 2009 at the Kent General Hospital in Dover after a long battle with kidney disease. A loving mother and devoted wife, Deborah was born and lived all her life in Delaware. She was a well known crafter and loved her family, especially staying in touch via email. Deborah is predeceased by her father, N. David Gaunt, and her sister, Davette Gaunt. She is survived by her husband, Thomas; children, Philip (Jaquilyn), T.J. (Chrissy), and John (Tanya) Niezek, Katie Howell, and Kelly Fricker; mother, Jeannette Thomas; brothers, David (Janette) Gaunt and Howard Thomas; sisters, Kerry Elliott and Darlene (Michael) Kapa; 4 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. HENRY LAW
Henry G. Law Age 69, a lifelong resident of Wilmington, DE, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on September 19, 2009. Henry was the son of the late Henry I. Law and Louise Kleitz Law. He was a graduate of Tower Hill School and the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Arts in Mechanical Engineering and Master of Science in Agricultural Economics. A Project Engineer with DuPont, later sold to Ciba Geigy, he retired as an Engineering Manager. He belonged to several garden clubs and his favorite pastime was growing daylilies and hosta. He was a designated a Master Gardner in June 2009. Henry is survived by his wife of 47 years, Pat, his daughter, Kathy Daly and her husband Chris, his son, George and his wife Tina, 3 grandchildren, Nicolette, Lexie, Jacob and step-grandson, Christopher. He was preceded in death by his son Kenneth in 1977. Eloise B. Lebert Age, 92, of Newark, DE, passed away on April 8, 2009 at Elkton Care and Rehab. Eloise was a graduate of Wilmington High School and Goldey-Beacom College. She retired as a senior secretary from the former Wilmington Board of Education. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Newark. Her hobbies were church related and she loved to spend time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Louis L. Lebert in 1989. Eloise is survived by her children, David Lebert and his wife Patricia of Dothan, AL, Nancy L. Lane of Newark, DE and Susanne Wells of Chesapeake City, MD, 7 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. HENSYL LEVAN
Hensyl C. LeVan “Van” Age 89, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on Sunday, May 24, surrounded by his family. Mr. LeVan was born in Berwick, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Calvin and Mary LeVan. He proudly served his country as a Technical Sergeant with the US Marine Corps during World War II and was based for three years in the South Pacific. Hensyl worked for Delmarva Power for 38 years and retired as the manager of the Real Estate and Right of Way Department. He served on the Board of Directors and as President of the Delmarva Chapter of the American Right of Way Association. Hensyl was an active outdoorsman, and enjoyed hunting, boating and fishing. He originated the Young Water Fowlers Training Program in the State of Delaware and was nationally recognized with the Conservationist Award from the prestigious African Safari Club. Hensyl was also an expert gardener and woodworker, and passed his knowledge and enthusiasm onto his family. Above all, Hensyl enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his seven grandchildren. He played an active role in the Midway Little League, serving as team manager and equipment manager for many years. His grandchildren have fond memories of the time spent with their grandfather, including summers spent fishing and crabbing at Dewey Beach, building model airplanes, hours trying to beat PopPop at Nintendo, and his endless supply of candy. Hensyl is survived by his wife of 52 years, Virginia (Gerstenberg) LeVan; his son, Phillip C. LeVan and wife Bonnie, of Sparta, NJ; daughter Beth L. Peoples and husband John of Hockessin, DE; and daughter Rebecca A. Brockson and husband Andy of Hockessin, DE; 7 grandchildren, Kurtis, Corey and Kristy LeVan, Ben and Eric Peoples, and Amanda and Andrew Brockson. He is also survived by two brothers, William LeVan of Berwick, PA and Leo LeVan of Jacksonville, Fl. A gathering will be held on Sunday May 31st at 1:00 to 3:00 pm at the MCCRERY MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 3710 Kirkwood Hwy. at Duncan Road. Jenny Rock Limbers, LCSW Jenny Rock Limbers, 37, of Wilmington, passed away suddenly on Friday, September 4, 2009 at the Christiana Hospital. Jenny practiced as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with Phoenix Behavioral Health Services in New Castle and Dover, DE. In addition to her professional life, Jenny loved and served the community and her parishes. She is survived by her husband, Kevin Limbers; her parents, Michael and Maggie Rock of Unionville, PA; her brother, Thomas Rock of Herndon, VA and her grandmother, Margaret Rock of Lyndora, PA. Gary N. Lind Age 63, of Chadds Ford, PA, formerly of Wilmington, passed away suddenly on Sunday, September 6, 2009 in Riddle Hospital, Media, PA. Gary was born in Wilmington to the late Ruth (Calhoun) & Norman Lind and graduated from Conrad HS in 1963. He is survived by his daughters, Nikki Rogers(Gerald) and Lesley Lind; a granddaughter, the love of his life, Zoey; his siblings, Kathy Crew and Bruce Lind and his nephews and niece. Bridget P. Logue “Bridie” Age 80, of Wilmington, DE, died on Friday, March 6, 2009. As she had wished, she died peacefully at home surrounded by her family. Left motherless at an early age, Bridie devoted her life to her children and grandchildren. They will miss her dearly. Bridie Reilly was born in County Mayo, Ireland, on September 6, 1928, daughter of Mary Gallagher Reilly and James Reilly. At the age of 19, she emigrated to the United States on her own. In 1952, she married John Logue of West Philadelphia. Bridie was predeceased by her beloved husband John in 1999. She is survived by their five children: John Logue and his wife Nancy of West Chester, PA, and their children Kristin, Brendan, Sean, and Kelly; Bridget (Bridie) Norquist and her husband Dan of Shamong, NJ, and their children Peter and Erik; Peter Logue and his partner Mike Hazell of Boston, MA; Nora Pearse and her husband Don of West Chester, PA, and their children Don and Nora; and Patrick Logue and his partner Patrick Bader of Cape May, NJ. She is also survived by two sisters, Josie Keane and her husband Wally of Charlestown, County Mayo, Ireland, and Sister Cathal (Mary Kate) of Kent, UK, as well as her sister-in-law Ann Reilly of Scottsdale, AZ and many nieces and nephews. Julie L. Lotz Age 41, of Newark, DE, passed away on August 22, 2009 at Christiana Hospital. Julie worked as a general manager for Account Recovery Specialists. She was an online DJ and enjoyed dancing at Stage Lights Dance Studio. Julie loved playing volleyball and softball and was always active. She was well loved by her extended family and her many friends. She was preceded in death by her brother, Michael McKinster. Julie is survived by her children, Rachel Drake and Derrick Foraker, her mother, Patricia McKinster, her sister, Tina Hafer, and her fiancé, Daniel Staubus. Mary E.V. Ludlam Age 87, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on April 23, 2009 at home. Mary was a 1944 graduate of Syracuse University. After college she resided in Brooklyn, N.Y. and worked on Wall Street. After her marriage to William H. Ludlam, Jr. she moved to Wilmington and worked for the DuPont Company. She then went on to substitute teach for the public schools after which she taught for 20 years at St. Catherine of Siena School. She loved to travel throughout the Unites States and Europe. Mary also enjoyed gardening. She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Ludlam, Jr., her sisters, Helen Mason, Agnes Lambert and her brother, Wilbert Lee Allen. Mary is survived by her children, Elizabeth V. Burns (Robert), Diana Milo (Marc) and William H. Ludlam, III ( Beth), her brother, James V. Allen ( Connie), her grandchildren, Meredith ( David), Craig ( Lindsay), Ashlee, Sara, Melissa, Adam ( Lindsay) and Maxwell, and her great granddaughter, Madelyn and her expectant great granddaughter. John Wesley Lynam John Wesley Lynam, 90, passed away peacefully on October 1, 2009 in Newark, DE. He was a kind, generous and devout Christian who was affectionately known as Wes. He will be missed by his family and many friends in Wilmington, Newark, Rehoboth, and Milford. Wes enjoyed watching sports, gardening, and spending time with family. He was born April 12, 1919 in Wilmington, DE to Frank and Bertha Lynam, and was brother to Alfred, Carlton, Dorsey, and Marjorie. He received a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree in 1941 from the University of Delaware and was a long time member of ASME. His career spanned more than 40 years. He retired from Joseph Bancroft and Sons and worked part time well into his 70’s. In addition he was also active n volunteer organizations such as the Wilmington Manor Fire Co. and the PTA. Wes is survived by his beloved Mary Jane, wife of 64 years; 2 sons, John W. Lynam, Jr. of Newark, and Kenneth G. Michael N. Lynn Michael N. Lynn, age 82, passed away peacefully on Saturday May 2, 2009 at Heartland Hospice House. Born in Centralia, PA on February 8, 1927, Mike was one of seven sons of the late John and Anastasia Lynn. Mike worked 44 years for the Pennsylvania Railroad, Conrail, and Amtrak and retired in 1989. Mike and his six brothers all served their country during World War II. He was a life member of General W.W. Atterbury VFW Post. Mike enjoyed spending time with his family, gardening and working around the house. Mike is survived by his wife of 58 years, Blanche, two sons, Michael S. Lynn of Brack-Ex and Robert W. Lynn of Elkton. He is also survived by three granddaughters, Allison, Amanda and Ericka, a sister, Ann and three brothers, Jim of Mount Carmel, PA, Metro of Harrisburg, PA and Peter of Stamford, CT. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for the care given to Mike by the staff of Christiana Care and Heartland Hospice House. Katherine Maciey At age 94 passed away at her Wilmington home on April 14, 2009. Born and raised in Wilmington DE, Katherine was the daughter of the Late Stephen and Mary Kachmar. She was educated in the Wilmington school system and worked in the clothes manufacturing industry before her marriage to her beloved husband William Maciey who passed away in January 2000. Kate was a devoted wife and friend. She will always be remembered for her sense of style and love of fashion. A lifelong member of SS Peter and Paul Ukrainian Orthodox Church she leaves behind her church family, friends and numerous cherished nieces and nephews. A special thanks to Sharon, Eleanor and the hospice care takers for the gentle and loving care they provided. Beverly J. Mahan Age 62, of Newark, DE died on January 28, 2009. Beverly was born to the late Charles A. Keenan and raised in Wilmington, DE. She was preceded in death by her husband Raymond C. Sharp Jr. She is survived by her mother, Elizabeth C. Keenan, her husband, Robert J. Mahan, her five children, Dolores Reeves, Jefferson Scales, Elizabeth Willis, Paula Wisneski and Beverly Bishop; five step-children, Raymond Sharp III, Carol Grau, Robert Mahan, Jr., Melissa Whitehead and Michael Mahan. She is also survived by three brothers, Wayne Bacon Sr., Robert Bell and Tommy Russum. She also leaves to cherish her memory, 20 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. In her work life, Beverly was the Office Manager for Dr. Stewart Septimus, M.D. for 28 years. In her social life, Beverly was very active in Wilmington bowling, where she bowled in many local and state tournaments. She was a member of the WIBC, USBC and the WWBA. She served as V.P. of the USBCWWBA, Director of the WWBA, Secretary of the KISS League, Secretary/Treasurer of the Wilmington 600 Club and Secretary/Treasurer for numerous other leagues. She was inducted into the Wilmington USBC WBA Hall of Fame on Oct 18, 2008. She was also an active member in the Moose Lodge for 33 years and served as Senior Regent. She was a devoted homemaker whose greatest pleasure was being with her family and friends. Gayle deeply loved animals and was always willing to take time to care for others. She enjoyed gardening, bright sunny days Christmas mornings and opportunities to make people smile. Gayle’s warm, loving personality will be greatly missed by all that had the pleasure to know her. Ellwood A. Maltman “Bud” Age 82, of Wilmington, DE passed away on June 30, 2009 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Wilmington, DE and raised in Charleston, WV where he graduated from DuPont HS. Bud was a Marine Corps veteran of WWII. He was a design supervisor with the DuPont Company retiring in 1982 after 35 years service. He was an officer of the Delaware Iris Society and was an avid iris and daylily gardener. He traveled extensively including all 50 states, was a member of the Blue Hen Seniors bowling league and an avid Phillies, Eagles, and U of D Football fan. Bud was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. He was preceded in death by his parents, Elizabeth and Ellwood Maltman; son, Robert Maltman; daughter, Nancy Maltman Lipinski; and Noriene Leonard Maltman. Bud is survived by his wife of 42 years, Virginia Fitch Maltman; children, Deborah Maltman Boccetti (Tom), James Maltman, Steven Maltman, Linda LeRoy (Tom),Nancy Burns and Gary Burns; grandchildren, Jena Boccetti, Jessica Maltman, Steven Maltman, Jr., Sam LeRoy, Tyler LeRoy, Elizabeth Lipinski, John Lipinski, Noriene Lipinski, David Burns and 5 great grandchildren. Joan S. Mancari Age 77, of New Castle, DE, went home to be with the Lord on April 24, 2009 at St. Francis Hospital. Joan was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and a member of Our Lady of Fatima R. C. Church. She enjoyed traveling, bird watching and especially her dog Micki. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred J. Mancari and her son-in-law, Michael Germack. Joan is survived by her children, Michael Mancari and his wife Marta, Paula M. Germack, Patrick Mancari and his wife Theresa and Nina M. Mancari. She is also survived by her sister, Marie Maguire, her grandchildren, Nicole, Jacqueline, Aindrea, Morgan and Kevin and her great grandson, Owen. Jacob F. Mansure “Jake” Age 88 of Wilmington, DE passed away peacefully at home on September 23, 2009. Mr. Mansure served his country in the U.S. Navy. He was employed for 32 years with the DuPont Company before retiring. He was preceded in death by his parents Mr.& Mrs. John F. Mansure and his sister Violet Handschuh. Jake is survived by his wife of 63 years, Frances (Loebe) Mansure; his children, John F. Mansure of New Castle, Kathleen M. Collins of Elkton, MD and 3 grandchildren. The funeral service will be held on Monday September 28, at 1:00 pm in the McCrery Memorial Chapel, 3710 Kirkwood Highway at Duncan Rd. Friends are welcome for visitation at 12:00 pm.
