ALFRED SCHICK
Alfred H. Schick, Jr., of Cape Coral Fl. and formerly of Wilmington, DE passed away in Hope Hospice of Cape Coral on November 15, 2008. Mr. Schick was employed with the DuPont Company for 26 years and was also co-owner of Paragon Precision for 7 years. He was a member of Ionic Lodge #31 in Newport, DE. He is survived by his wife of Lillian Schick, his son Otto L. Schick, daughter Marian Hall and husband William and his grandson William H. Hall, Jr. A viewing will be held on Friday November 21, 2008 from 6-8 pm. in the McCrery Memorial Chapel, 3710 Kirkwood Highway at Duncan Rd. Wilmington, DE 19808. A Masonic service will be held at 7pm. The funeral service will be on Saturday November 22 at 11 am. in the Chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, N. Dupont Highway, New Castle. Burial will follow in the adjoining memorial park.
HAROLD SHAUB
Harold G. Shaub, Jr. Age 86, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on July 22, 2009 at Christiana Hospital. Harold Gordon Shaub, Jr. was born on March 7, 1923 in Wilmington, DE. As a young boy he sang in the choir at the Cathedral Church of St. John on Concord Avenue. He graduated from Pierre S. DuPont High School in 1941 and attended the University of Delaware until he was commissioned by the United States Navy. Harold proudly served his country in the South Pacific during World War II. While serving in the Navy he attended Columbia University and graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Harold married the love of his life, Evelyn Morgan Moore, on January 20, 1945. In May of 1946, Mr. Shaub joined Hercules Powder Company. His first assignment was in the drafting room at the Parlin Plant in New Jersey. He later transferred to the plant maintenance group where he served as mill-wright foreman and general foreman and later as area maintenance foreman and area maintenance supervisor. In 1952 he transferred to the Engineering Department at the Home Office in Wilmington, DE where he became involved in the project engineering phases of DMT and polyolefins efforts. He was appointed assistant chief draftsman in 1964 and promoted to chief draftsman in 1966. Later in his career, he managed engineering projects for Hercules Incorporated in the United States and Europe until his retirement in May of 1986. Harold was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was a member of Christ Church Christiana Hundred. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, bowling, building and fixing things. He used to say that he could fix anything but a broken heart or the break of day…..and that was the truth! Harold also loved the seashore, especially his summer home in Cape May, NJ, where he and his family vacationed regularly for the past 20 years. Always a gentleman, he was quick witted and had an infectious smile. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Harold was predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Evelyn Moore Shaub on May 22, 2008. He is survived by his daughter, Mildred Shaub Gilbert and her husband Ron of Dover, PA, his daughter and caregiver, Julia Lynn Shaub of Wilmington, DE, and his grandchildren, Petty Officer First Class Ronald W. Gilbert, Jr., USCG, National Motor Lifeboat School, Ilwaco, WA and Elizabeth Morgan Cool, RDH and her husband Todd, of York, PA, and his faithful dog “Duke.” Friends may call from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, July 29th, 2009 at the MCCRERY MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME 3924 Concord Pike, Wilm., DE 19803. REGENA SHAW
Regena Merrell Shaw, age 91, of Wilmington, DE and formerly of Port Arthur, Texas, died on December 7, 2008 in Wilmington. Mrs. Shaw was born in Irene, Texas to the late James A. and Mary B. Merrell. Blessed with a nurturing and caring soul, she studied nursing at the University of Texas, Austin, earning her R.N.in 1939. During her career, Mrs. Shaw nursed in several venues, including corporate and private duty nursing. After her marriage, she devoted herself to raising her family. Mrs. Shaw was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Wilmington and United Methodist Temple, Port Arthur. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Shaw was preceded in death in 1994 by her husband of 54 years , James Milton Shaw. She is survived by 2 children, James M. Shaw (Sheila) and Katherine Shaw Gloyd (Joe); 1 brother, Maurice Merrell; and 1 grandson, Todd. A family funeral service and burial will be held privately. Elizabeth Ann Sheldon “Betty Ann” Age 83, of Wilmington, DE, died at her home on Thursday, May 7, 2009 Betty Ann was born in Sullivan, WI and raised in Oconowac, WI. She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Grace King and by her beloved husband of 52 years, Raleigh F Sheldon in 2000. After graduating from the University of Wisconsin, they married in 1948. Shortly after they moved to Tokyo,where they both worked for the government. After relocating to Delaware, Betty Ann was a devoted mother and homemaker. She taught at the Charles Bush School and retired after 20 years in 1986. She was a faithful and active member of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church for nearly 50 years. She is survived by her daughter, Ann of Wilmington; sons, Michael and his wife, Melissa of Newark, TR and his wife Gina of Houston, TX; sister, Katy and her husband Robert Kubiak of Oshkosh, WI and her brother, Tom King and his wife Glenda of Atlanta, GA. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren, Cory and his wife Jen of Smyrna and Emily, Charlie and Katie of Houston, TX. Sara A. Shelley Age 84, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on May 27, 2009 at Manor Care, Pike Creek. Sara had retired as a clerk from the State of Delaware Division of Social Services. She was a member of Marshallton U.M. Church and enjoyed cooking and reading. Sara was preceded in death by her husband, William K. Shelley and her sister, Ruth Betty Abernathy. She is survived by her daughters, Karen Fidance and her husband Philip and Kay Monack and her husband Larry and her grandchildren, Brian Caswell-Monack and his wife Angela, Jillian Monack and Holly Kline. RUTH Huff Shelton (nee Jones) passed away unexpectedly at home on December 18, 2008. Ms. Shelton was a retired medical technician who last worked for Christiana Hospital in Newark and Wilmington. She was a graduate of the University of Delaware and a descendent of the earliest Swedish founders of New Sweden who arrived on the ships Kalmar Nyckel and Charitas in 1641. Ruth was predeceased by her parents, William T. Jones II and L. Virginia Huff and her brother, William T. Jones III. She is survived by her two children, Amy Shelton of Mays Landing, NJ and David Shelton of Leesburg, FL and her granddaughter, Katherine Beck and by her dear cat Zoey. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on Friday December 26, 2008 at the MCCRERY MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 3710 Kirkwood Hwy. at Dunkin Road, Wilmington, DE where friends are invited to call after 9:00 am. Roger Paul Short After a brief, courageous battle with cancer and a lifelong struggle with autism, our brother, uncle and friend, Roger Paul Short, age 54 went fully healed and whole into the presence of his Lord and Savior on April 27, from Christiana Hospital. He was born on June 9, 1954 in Wilmington, DE. In his young years he attended the Meadowood School in Newark. As a young adult he resided and worked at the Stockley Center in Sussex County, DE. In 2001 he moved into a group home in North Wilmington, operated by Keystone Human Services and was lovingly assisted by their staff. Since returning to New Castle County to live, he was employed through The Chimes of Delaware program, working primarily at Citibank in Newark. Roger was preceded in death by his parents Helen and Thomas H. Short, Jr., his brother, Robert H. Short and his great-nephew, Ryan Short. In addition to his many friends he will be missed by his brother, Thomas Short III and his wife Dorothy of Conowingo, MD., his sister Elizabeth Sorowice and her husband John of Wilmington, DE., his sister- in –law, Linda Short of Townsend, DE, along with 10 nieces and nephews and 15 (soon to be 16) great-nieces and great-nephews. Robert C. Singley Age 52 of Newark, DE passed away on Monday April 27, 2009. Bob was born in Philadelphia, PA. He was a carpenter and enjoyed spending time with family and friends at the Jersey shore. Bob is survived by his mother, Ruth Summers and her husband Don, his father, Charles Singley and his wife Joy, his daughter Jennifer and her mother Karen Singley, his brothers, Paul Singley, Charles Singley and his wife Dawn, David Shaak and Drew Shaak , his sister Karen Sidorsky and her husband John. Andrew F. Smith Age 78, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on June 23, 2009 at home. Andrew was a retired supervisor from Gaylord Container. He was an Army Veteran and a member of the Armstrong Masonic Lodge. Andrew enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his grandchildren. Andrew was preceded death by his wife Roberta in 2000. Richard Smith, Sr. On August 15, 2009 Richard Smith, Sr. 75 years was called home to be with his Lord. Mr. Smith was a devoted husband to his wife Bessie and father of 5 children, Richard Jr., Edward, Deborah, Faye and Pamela. He also was a loving grandfather to 23 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. He was a local contractor, Sunday School Teacher at Ministries for Christ in Newark and was past master of Ionic Lodge # 31 A.F. & A.M in Newport. Rosemary Smith Age 79 of Brandywine Hundred died on March 27, 2009 at Sunrise Assisted Living. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd. She was an artist and enjoyed painting. Rosemary was preceded in death by her husband Merritt and her sister Norma. She is survived by her five children, Susan Smith of Bozeman, MT, Craig Smith and his wife Maryann of Betterton, MD, Stuart Smith and his wife Karen of Fort Stewart, GA, Jeffrey Smith and his wife Candy of Wilmington, and Laurel Colpetzer and her husband Keith of Clayton, NC. Additionally, she is survived by eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, a sister, Barbara McCrea and her husband Tom of Dekalb, IL, a brother, Patrick Stirlen of Fremont, IN, and two aunts, Catherine Wood and Maxine Burlage both of Fort Wayne, IN. William J. Steen, Sr. “Pop” Age 86, of Wilmington, DE passed away on December 27, 2008. He was an Army veteran of WW II. Pop was a clerk in the mail room at Delmarva Power, retiring in 1983 after 32 years service. Bill was also a life member of Mill Creek Fire Co. where he was V.P., Secretary, Fire Recorder, Captain of the Ambulance, Rescue Captain, and member of the board of directors for 28 consecutive years. He was also an honorary member of the Ladies Auxiliary. Pop was a member of the New Castle County Fire Police since 1961 where he held the offices of Secretary, and President (1973-1975), and a member of the Delaware State Fire Police for many years where he held the office of President (1972-1973 and 1978-1979). A great honor was when he received the New Castle County Fire Police Officer of the year award in 2007 from the New Castle County Police and in 2008 from the Delaware State Police. Pop was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth “Betty Jane” Truitt Steen, son, Wayne A. Steen, Sr.; granddaughter, Sara E. Adams; and grandson, Matthew J. Adams. Bill is survived by his daughter, Patricia A. Steen-Carnevale and grandchildren, Anthony J. II, Gina Carnevale, and his buddy, Buster with whom he lived, sister, Ethel Subach, daughter-in-law, Teri L. Steen and grandchildren, Wayne A. Jr., Phillip J. Steen, and Heather A. Primaldi; children, Susan J. Adams and William J. Steen, Jr., 6 additional grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. Marjorie Richwine Stevens In Wilmington, Delaware on Oct. 1st, 2009, age 82, went to be with the Lord after a 3 year battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Marjorie retired from Equifax after 30 years. She was an active and charter member of Calvary Assembly of God, 2600 Shipley Rd. Wilm.,DE 19803 where she was the secretary for over 20 years after her retirement until her illness. Mary Ann Stevens ( Zaleski ) Mary Ann Stevens, age 82, died Wednesday, March 4th. Born in Moosic, PA, daughter of the late Mary and Walter Zaleski. She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Stevens, Sr. who passed away July 30th 2008. Mary Ann’s greatest blessing was the Love for her family. She is survived by two children, Allen J. Stevens, Jr., his wife, Christine, and Cheryl L. Cooper, her husband, Jack; five grandchildren, Jennifer Schimpf, her husband, Daniel, Allen Stevens III, Stephanie Stevens, Travis Cooper, his wife Jennifer, and Jaclyn Cooper; Also two great grandchildren, Travis Cooper, Jr. and Dylan Shimpf. Mary Sue Stephens After a long, happy and fulfilling life, Mary Sue passed away on Sunday, September 13, 2009. Sue was an outgoing, vivacious person who made friends wherever she went. She also had many long-term friendships that she treasured throughout the years. Her greatest joys in life were her grandchildren, Tyler, Kyle, and Ashley. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Mary Sue was preceded in death by her loving husband,Donald Ray Stephens. Clara B. Stewart Age 82, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on June 1, 2009 at Shipley Manor. Clara was a graduate of West Chester Secretarial School. She worked as a secretary to the president of the R.R. Division of the DuPont Company for 15 ½ years. She also worked at Fairfax Floor Covering and Furniture and Fairfax Hardware. Clara was a member of Siloam U.M. Church and the United Methodist Women. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, John l. Stewart, her son Tim B. Stewart and his wife Shelley and her granddaughters, Sarah and Emily. Samuel Stewart, 89, a lifelong resident of Wilmington, died on October 1, 2009. Son of the late Samuel P. and Harriet Stewart, Sam was a graduate of P.S. duPont High School and proudly served our country in the United States Army during WWII. He spent his entire career working for the Pennsylvania Railroad, and after retirement, enjoyed bowling and traveling. Sam was a longtime member of the Masonic fraternity. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy C. Stewart; 1 step-son, Martin Cockerham; 1 brother, James C. Stewart; 5 step-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; several step-great-grandchildren; and 1 step-great-great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death in 1997 by his first wife of 56 years, Marian Stewart. A viewing will be held from 10-11am, Friday, October 9 at Hanover Presbyterian Church, (where Sam was a longtime member) followed by the funeral service at 11am. Helen E. Stigile Age 88, of Wilmington, DE passed away on February 13, 2009. She was a retired lab technician with Joseph Bancroft & Sons in Wilmington. Helen was a member of Richardson Park United Methodist Church, Skyline United Methodist Church Bible study and social club, and AARP. Her husband, Floyd W. Stigile died in 1963. Helen is survived by her son, Thomas R. Stigile, Sr. of Livonia, NY; 2 brothers, Peter A. Mangold of Colora, MD, and Paul F. Mangold of Bear, DE; 1 sister, Ada J. James L. Stradley Age 78, of Wilmington, DE and Fenwick Island passed away on February 22, 2009 at his home. He was a Purchasing Supervisor with Ciba-Geigy in Newport, retiring in 1991 after 41 years service. Jim was a member of Ionic Lodge # 31 AF & AM in Newport, and played and coached with the Olde Tymers Soft Ball League in Bethany Beach. Jim is survived by his wife of 58 years, Eleanor J. Stradley, his children, Karen A. Coker of Columbia, SC, and Donald J. Stradley and companion, Steve Kubla of Wilmington, his granddaughter, Kristin E. Hill and her husband, Adam. JAMES SWEENEY
James C. Sweeney Jr. Age 82 of Claymont, DE passed away at home surrounded by his loving family on Sunday, July 26, 2009. He was founder of Sweeney’s Bakery, a long time Wilmington establishment. Jim was born in Chester, PA. He served as a chef on the USS Farenholt in the US Navy during World War II. After the war, he worked as an apprentice at a bakery in Media. PA. In August 1957, he and his wife Margaret opened Sweeney’s Bakery at Foulk and Naamans Roads in Wilmington, where he worked until his death. A tireless worker, his workday typically began at 1:00 a.m., when he would begin making dough for breads and pastries for the day. He enjoyed his many loyal customers spanning over four generations, and was especially grateful to all those who rallied to keep the bakery in business during the road construction project in 1998. Jim also enjoyed race horses, owning several that he raced at Brandywine Raceway and other tracks during the 1960’s and 70’s. He loved big band music. Jim is survived by his wife of 62 years, Margaret (Reilly) Sweeney; daughter Kathleen Reynolds and her husband, Norman; son James Sweeney, III and his partner, Mike Pellicone. He is also survived by a brother, Jack Sweeney and his wife, Barbara; his sisters, Dorothy Fleming and her husband, Bayard, and Josephine Petrea. Also surviving to cherish his memory are his grandchildren, Eric Reynolds and his wife, Dana, and Mark Reynolds and numerous nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the Church of the Holy Child, 2500 Naamans Road, Wilmington, DE at 12:00 p.m. on Monday, August 3rd, where friends may call after 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Lawn Croft cemetery, Linwood, PA. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Jim’s memory to the Delaware Hospice, Inc., 3515 Silverside Road, Wilmington, DE 19810, or the Delaware Humane Society, 701 A Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.
