Jeanne Hankins Hadley,
tutoring pioneer
Jeanne Hankins Hadley, 81, originally from the Brookhaven, Pa. area, died at her home in Rehoboth Beach on Thursday, Oct. 18, 2007.
Mrs. Hadley was a lifelong teacher, beginning her teaching career at Tatnall School in Wilmington. She taught at Alexis I. DuPont High School, Oak Grove Middle School and Cecil Community College.
During the 1950s Mrs. Hadley pioneered the home-bound tutoring program for the state of Delaware and continued with her home-bound students throughout her career first in Wilmington, then with the Appoquinimink School District and as recently as June 2007 with the Cape Henlopen School District in Sussex County.
Mrs. Hadley had been an involved Rehoboth resident for more than 20 years. She had been a docent at the Homestead of the Rehoboth Art League since 1985 and became a member of the Village Improvement Association (VIA) the same year and had been involved with the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership program (HOBY) for more than a decade.
Mrs. Hadley was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin G. Hadley, in 1984.
She is survived by her son, Jan Hadley of West Union, S.C.; her daughter, Lauren Kermode of Chesapeake City, Md.; her brothers, David Hankins, Steven Hankins, Paul Hankins and the Rev. William Hankins; grandsons Charles Hadley and John and Sam Richardson; granddaughters Katherine Gordon and Claire Richardson; and seven great-grandchildren.
There will be a memorial service Sunday, Oct. 28, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium at 16961 Kings Highway in Lewes. Visitation with the family will take place at 1 p.m., followed by the service at 2 p.m.

Dorothy Bull Farrell,
early 911 dispatcher
Dorothy Bull Farrell, 75, of Milton, passed away Monday, Oct. 22, 2007, at the Milford Center.
Dorothy was born in Oak Hall, Va., daughter of the late Wallace and Dorothy Chesser Bull.
She was one of the first dispatchers at the 911 Emergency Operations Center in Georgetown. Dorothy worked at the Georgetown office for 29 years and retired in 1993. She was instrumental in training and implementing many of the center’s procedures.
Dorothy was a member of the O.E.S. chapter 9 in Georgetown, the O.E.S. in Oak Hall, Va., and a member of Bethel U.M. Church in Lewes. She enjoyed gardening and reading.
She is survived by her husband, Charles E. Farrell; a daughter, Karen Simkins of Milton; two sons, William Simkins of Camden, N.Y. and Robert Simkins of Princess Anne, Md.; several grandchildren; two sisters, Frances Belote of Oak Hall, Va., and Agnes Taylor of Sign Post, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, Milton with burial in the Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery, Millsboro.

Raymond J. Johnson,
retired plumber
Raymond J. Johnson, 89, of rural Lewes, formerly of Philadelphia, Pa., passed away at this home on Monday, Oct. 22, 2007.
He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., son of the late Ollie and Mary Fane Johnson.
He was a retired plumber. Raymond was a veteran of World War II, serving with the United States Army Air Corps.
He was a member of American Legion Post 28 of Oak Orchard/Riverdale, and the Angola By the Bay Men’s Club. He was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Association.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ollie Johnson and William Johnson.
He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Helen (Davison) Johnson; and daughter, Donna Rae Johnson. He is also survived by a sister, Marie Smith of Continued from page 99
Manahawkin, N.J.; and by his much-loved dog, Skippy.

Myrtle H. Donaway,
retired store manager
Myrtle H. Donaway, 99, of Whaleyville, Md., died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007, at Coastal Hospice At The Lake, Salisbury, Md.
Mrs. Donaway was born in Leipsic to Joshua B. and Annie M. Wilson Mitchell.
She was retired as a store manager for Candy Kitchen in Ocean City, Md., where she worked for more than 30 years. She was a member of Whaleyville United Methodist Church in Whaleyville, The United Methodist Women, and The Worcester County Farm Bureau.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Ira A. Hudson in 1935; her second husband, Raymond J. Donaway in 1991; two sisters and one brother.
Survivors include two sons, Ira W. Hudson and Raymond M. Donaway, both of Whaleyville; a brother, William Tingle of Levanon, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Elsie Mitchell of Lewes; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held at Hastings Funeral Home, Selbyville, with interment in Dale cemetery, Whaleyville.

Thomas R. Ostendorf,

Thomas R. Ostendorf of Timonium, Md., died Sunday, Oct. 21, 2007.
He was the loving husband of Janet Ostendorf (nee Reese) of Timonium; beloved father of Thomas R. Jr. of Frostburg, Md., Dave R. of Towson, Md., Francis X. of BelAir, Md., and Bobby W. Ostendorf of Rehoboth Beach; and the late Michael J. Ostendorf; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Harry J. and James A. Ostendorf.
The family will receive friends in the Lemmon Funeral Home of Dulaney Valley Inc., 10 W. Padonia Road at York Road, Timonium, from 3 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 23. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in the St. Joseph Church, Cockeysville, at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 24. Interment will be in Garrison Forest Veterans cemetery

A memorial service will be held for Ruth Ellen Messick King of Ellendale from 1 to 3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 28, at the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 534, 16268 S. Dupont Hwy., Harrington. Mrs. King passed away Oct. 1, 2007.
Doris M. Angstadt,
Laurel native
Doris M. Angstadt, 84, went home to be with the lord and her husband Raymond Saturday, Oct. 20, 2007.
Mrs. Angstadt was a World War II veteran of the Army nursing corps, having received the American Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Meritorious Service Unit plaque.
For 15 years Mrs. Angstadt healed hurts and hearts at Columbia Christian School. She and her beloved Raymond volunteered at God’s Storehouse for over a decade.
Mrs. Angstadt was born in Laurel to Charlie and Amelia Mitchell. She was a member of Peterson Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Judith A. Bruner; her sons, Dale T. and Jeffrey G. Angstadt; her brother, Hallie Mitchell; four granddaughters; and one grandson.
Funeral services for her will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, Oct. 25, in Greenlawn Funeral Home Chapel, with interment and military honors to follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 24, at the funeral home.

Steven E. Loucks,

Steven E. Loucks, 56, of Berkshire, N.Y., passed away Monday, Oct. 15, 2007, in Newark, N.J.
Steven was born in Cortland, N.Y., son of Marie Despaw Loucks and the late Elwood Loucks.
He was a long-distance truck driver and had received many safety awards for his driving. Steven had also been a dairy farmer.
He was an Army veteran and had served as a paratrooper and with the military police.
He enjoyed NASCAR, animals, cooking and volunteering his time to those in need.
In addition to his father, Steven was preceded in death by a brother, John Loucks.

Michael S. Marciano, 46, of Millsboro, passed away peacefully Friday, Oct. 19, 2007, at home, surrounded by his loving family.
Michael was born in Baltimore, Md., son of the late Michael and Martha Starks Marciano.
He was a residential home contractor and a woodworking craftsman.
Michael was a fan of the Baltimore Ravens football team.
He enjoyed motorcycles, and drawing was his passion.
Along with his parents, Michael was preceded in death by his brother, Bubby Marciano.
He is survived by his loving wife, Pamela Marciano; his children, Nicole Marciano, Michael Marciano, Michael Stephen Marciano Thomas, Brandon Devereaux and Angela Wilkinson; a brother, Tommy Marciano; a sister, Mariam Maley; his grandchildren, Kayle, Kassidy, and his little Bambino, Jordan; his favorite niece, Gigi Traynor; his most memorable aunt, Edna Starks; his mother-in-law, Linda Robison; his mother-in-law, Janet Jerread; and other friends and family.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 23, at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro.

Christine Makowski,
veterinarian
Christine Makowski, DVM, 56, of Landenburg, Pa., died peacefully at the home of her brother, Michael H. Makowski in Milton Saturday, Oct. 13, 2007. She was surrounded by her family.
Christine was a well-known and respected veterinarian in Pennsylvania and surrounding areas. Her practice was built on the principles of holistic veterinary medicine. She was trained in acupuncture and alternative therapies for large and small animals.
Christine attended the University of New Hampshire as an undergraduate and went on to graduate from the Cornell School of Veterinary Medicine. She recently completed training in holistic and alternative veterinary medicine at the University of Iowa.
Christine is survived by her brother Michael Makowski and sister-in-law Mary King; her brother Alex Makowski and sister-in-law Jessica Makowski; and her niece and nephews, Rachel, Stephen, Alex and Will Makowski; as well as numerous friends in the Landenburg community and her faithful companions of many years Nell and Ace.
A Memorial Service for family and friends is planned at the home of Michael Makowski and Mary King at 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 27, Call 302-947-4003 for directions.
