F. Ruben Irwin,
retired mechanic
F. Ruben Irwin, 73, of Milford, passed away peacefully Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007, at home, following a long illness. He was 73.
Ruben was born Aug. 17, 1934, in Denton, Md.
He was employed as a truck mechanic for I.G. Burton, retiring at the age of 65 after 44 years of service. Following retirement he continued with I.G. Burton as a parts runner. He never failed to mention how special Dave and I.G. Burton Sr. were to him.
Ruben was better known as “Cigar Man” to those who knew him well, and as “Pop” to his family.
He always enjoyed being surrounded by family, especially on race day. He was an avid racing fan.
Ruben enjoyed hunting, fishing, long rides along back country roads and bird watching with his wife and seeking out the beauty of lighthouses together.
After raising their family, he and his wife chose to bring joy to the lives of others as foster parents to more than 30 children in 10 years, adopting two beautiful girls and making them part of the family.
One of Ruben’s greatest companions was his four-legged best friend and sidekick, his dog, Charlie Brown.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Irwin; his brother, Hank; and his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles and Naomi “Weather Lady” Mohr.
Ruben is survived by his wife of 40 years, Betty. He is also survived by his children, Calvin Brittingham of Milford, Dennis Irwin and his wife Anissa of San Diego, Calif., Christine Wilson of Milford, Stephanie Hall and her companion Angelo Pittari of Millsboro, Maria Barber and her companion Kyle Short of Ellendale, and Beth Humes and her husband Ben of Milford; his grandchildren, Coleen Brittingham of Milford, Madison Irwin and Tyler Irwin, both of San Diego, Crystal Wessels and her husband Kris of Milford, Arin-Lynn Warner and her husband Adam, and Andrew Hall, all of Bowers Beach, Kylie Short of Ellendale, and Taylor Humes, Gracie Humes and Talon Humes, all of Milford; a great-granddaughter, Kacie Casper of Milford; his brother, John Irwin and his wife Mary of Camden; and many in-laws, nieces and nephews.
Services will be at noon, Tuesday, Oct. 9, at Rogers Funeral Home. Friends may call at 11 a.m. Interment will be private.
Charles Arthur Canby,
security specialist
Charles Arthur Canby, 51, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2007, near Slaughter Beach.
He was born in Memphis, Tenn., on Dec. 9, 1955, son of Thomas Dawson Canby Sr. and Margaret Katherine Overby Canby of West Chester, Pa.
He attended the McDonough School, Northeastern University and Memphis State University. He was employed in the field of information technology at the University of Pennsylvania, and Price Waterhouse Coopers in Philadelphia. Since moving to Delaware in 2000, he worked for the state of Delaware, Department of Safety and Homeland Security, as an information system support specialist.
Charles loved traveling, photography, nonfiction on the best seller’s list, the beagles and his parrot, Elmo.
He was a member of St. Jude The Apostle Catholic Church where he started his journey in the faith through participation in the RCIA program. He served as an advisor for four years on the Website Committee, participated as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, served as an Extraordinary Minister to the Sick and chaired the Respect for Life Ministry. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Monsignor Desmond Council 13348 and in the Teams of Our Lady Society.
He will be sadly missed by his parents and his wife of 15 years, Patricia Link Canby. He is also survived by his brother, Thomas Dawson Canby Jr. of Austin, Texas and his wife Kate and their children Julia, Rebecca and Elizabeth; his sister, Mary Jean Goetz of Towson, Md. and her husband Robert and their children, Sarah and Matthew; his cousins, Nancy Lee Canby of Brookfield and William Dawson Canby of Boyds, Md. and his wife Lee and their son Tommy. He will also be missed by the members of the Link family, including the Cannons, the Esterlys, the Fullmers, and Salvatores, all of whom he loved for 15 years, especially the children.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Mark Connelly at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 9, at St. Jude the Apostle Church, Route 1 north of Five Points, where friends may call one hour prior to Mass. Burial will be at Gate of Heaven cemetery, Dagsboro. Arrangements by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude The Apostle Building Fund, 152 Tulip Drive, Lewes, DE 19958.
Ronald J. Casalvera,
retired carpenter
Ronald J. Casalvera, 64, a resident of Lewes since 2005, formerly of New Castle, died Friday, Oct. 5, 2007 at home.
Ronald was born in Wilmington, the son of the late Frank Lewis and Sara Virginia Simpson Casalvera.
He was a carpenter for Local 626 Union for 45 years, retiring in 2004.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Newport and enjoyed fishing and building small projects.
In addition to his parents, in 1991, his wife, Linda Heckman Casalvera, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his companion of seven years, Sharon Hine; two children, Wendy DiGuglielmo and her husband James of Milton and Ronald A. Casalvera and his wife Lisa of New Castle; a brother, Frank Casalvera of Newark; and seven grandchildren, J.T., Nicky, Luke and Dallas DiGuglielmo, Matt Pettyjohn, and Zachery and Georgie Casalvera.
A Celebration of Life gathering for family and friends will be held from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 9, at the Lighthouse Restaurant, Angler’s Road, Lewes.

Evelyn D. Brumbaugh,
retired nurse
Evelyn Dorman Brumbaugh, 77, of Philipsburg, Pa., and formerly of Lewes and Milford, died on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2007 in the Mt. Nittany Hospital, State College, Pa.
Evelyn was born in Lewes on July 10, 1930, the daughter of the late Albert E. Dorman (1993) and Mae Ritter Dorman, one of seven children.
Evelyn graduated from Lewes High School in 1949 and the Beebe Hospital School of Nursing in 1952. She was a registered nurse at Beebe Hospital, Lewes; Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford; Dr. Graybeal’s office; and retired from the state of Delaware Department of Health.
After retirement she moved to Philipsburg, Pa., the hometown of her husband.
Evelyn could always be seen at social and family gatherings with her camera. She was a Past Matron of Kent chapter No. 11, Order of the Eastern Star, Milford, and a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Philipsburg where she sang in the choir. She will always be remembered for her beautiful needlepoint kneelers and the various banners she made to adorn her beloved churches. She was a former member of Christ Church, Milford.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Ernest, in January 2007.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Frank J. Brumbaugh, sons Frank D. and Boyd of Philipsburg, her mother and the following siblings, Betty Thomas, Joan Moore, Sarah Rickards, Susan Stone and Al Dorman.
Services were held on Monday, Oct. 8, 2007 at St. Paul’s Church, Philipsburg, Pa.
John C. Sadowski,
retired electrician
John C. Sadowski, 49, of Oak Orchard, formerly of Bethel Township, Pa., passed away at his home on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2007.
He was born in Chester, Pa., son of Theresa and John Sadowski. He was a retired journeyman electrician, working for Ray Doyle Electric and then I.B.E.W. #654.
John was a member of the American Legion Post 28 of Oak Orchard. He enjoyed fishing and camping.
He is survived by his wife, Donna J. Sadowski; his mother, Theresa Sadowski; and two sisters, Jeanette and Susan Sadowski.
Services will be private.

Levin John Harmon,

Levin John “Jack” Wesley Harmon, 76, of Harbeson, died Monday, Oct., 1, 2007, in his home.
Mr. Harmon was born April 25, 1931, in Lewes, son of the late John H. and Exadrain A. Harmon.
He enjoyed life, friends and unconditional love for his family.
Mr. Harmon was one you could always count on.
Up until he passed away he would communicate over the phone with his loved ones making sure that everything was okay. This was his way of encouraging others even when he was failing himself. This was Jack.

Everyone who crossed paths with him knew him to be a very kind gentleman. There was nothing that he wouldn’t do for anyone, even when he wasn’t feeling well himself. Mr. Harmon enjoyed his crafts of carpentry that he did for so many years. He could do almost anything. He’s gone home to rest and will be deeply and truly missed by all who knew him. Mr. Harmon was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel J. Harmon; and son, William A. Harmon.
He is survived by sons, Willis S. Harmon Sr. of Milton and Craig Levin Harmon of Harbeson; two daughters, Wandra R. Harmon and N. Victoria Harmon, both of Milton; three grandchildren, Danielle W., Tamra L. Harmon and Willis S. Harmon Sr., all of Milton; three great-grandchildren, Tiana D. Tramell, Kelly D. Price and Jayden D. Price, all of Milton; two brothers, Thomas E. Draine of Camden and Robert C. Draine of New Jersey; one sister, Diane and her husband Joe Strong of Camden; four stepchildren, Edward Miller of Dover, Edna Miller of Rehoboth Beach, Cheryl Daisey of Fredrica and George Miller of Lewes; several nieces and nephews; many friends; and a very good friend and the mother of his children, Thelma V. Harmon of Milton.
Services were held at Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Millsboro, with burial private.
James S. “Jim” Cannon,
Georgetown retiree
James Stanley “Jim” Cannon, 68, of Georgetown peacefully departed this life Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes, surrounded by family and friends.
He was born June 26, 1939, to the late George and Martha Cannon. He received his education at Richard Allen and W.C. Jason High School in Georgetown. Mr. Cannon was employed as a poultry worker and later by the City of Georgetown for several years until his health failed. He loved his family and music, loved to talk and was always right. Mr. Cannon attended Church of God, Booker Street, under the leadership of the Rev. Marvin Morris.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Alfred Cannon and John Cannon; and a niece, Alfreda.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Kathryn Cannon; three sons, Eugene Brittingham of Dover, James L. Gibbs Sr. of Newark, and James Sampson of Salisbury, Md.; four daughters, Barbara Gibbs Browne and her husband James of Felton, Carla Downing of Melfa, Va., Victoria Gibbs and her husband Clifford of Lewes, and Lena Phillips of Dover; three sisters, Mary King and Agnes Cannon, both of Georgetown, and Madeline Purnell of Ellendale; two brothers, Martin Cannon and his wife Marcella of Lincoln, and William Cannon of Georgetown; 15 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a special nephew, Anthony “Bug” Cannon; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at Grace United Methodist Church, Georgetown, with interment in the Old Hickory cemetery, Slaughter Neck.
Charles W. Thompson,
former CHEER driver
Charles W. Thompson, 80, of Millsboro, passed away Saturday, Sept. 29, 2007, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
He was born in Ridley Township, Pa, son of the late Charles and Caroline Starkey Thompson. Charles worked for Local Teamsters No. 312 in Chester, Pa., retiring after 20 years of service. He was also a driver for the Delaware County Daily Times in Pennsylvania and for the CHEER center in Delaware until the age of 75. He will be remembered as the best husband, father and grandfather.
He is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Roberta M. Thompson; three devoted daughters, Susan Brown and her husband Mike, Karen Dobbins and her husband Alan, and Holly Thomas and her husband John; two stepchildren, Lenny and Jean Romansky; a special cousin, Dot Cantalamessa and her husband Domonic; five grandchildren, Jennifer, Alan, Michael, Krysten and Matthew; and his faithful and loving dog, Winnie.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date. The family suggests memorial contributions to Dagsboro Church of Christ, PO Box 121A, Dagsboro, DE 19939.
Ella Stokes Mezick,
accomplished pianist
Ella Stokes Mezick, 89, of Ocean View, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2007 at the Wicomico Nursing Home in Salisbury, Md.
Born in Bordeaux, France, April 30, 1918, she came to America and resided most of her young life in Harrisburg, Pa. After moving to Rehoboth Beach, she met and married Myron Mezick, a former retired school teacher in the Indian River School District, who lost his life in a house fire in 1998.
She was a very accomplished pianist, giving lessons to many Ocean View residents. As an artist, her works are enjoyed by many. Also as a vocalist and harpist, she made her stage debut at the age of 5 in France. She was very active in the early 1950s directing old fashioned minstrel shows for many organizations. In the 1960s she volunteered much of her time teaching music to children in the Lord Baltimore Elementary School. One of her enjoyments was that of directing the Mariner’s Bethel Church Choir, which she did for 25 years.
She is survived by two daughters, Dee Mezick Bennett and husband Mark, and Micki Mezick Buck and husband Ed; four grandchildren, Jeff Bennett, Lori Bennett Copper, Danny Buck and Robbie Buck; nine great-grandchildren, Jordon Buck, Lindsey Buck, Douglas Buck, Emily Buck, Keeley Copper, Austyn Copper, Dillin Bennett, Jesse Bennett and Cody Bennett.
A graveside service for the immediate family will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 13, at Mariner’s Bethel cemetery. As she was a member of the Ocean View Church of Christ, a memorial service will be held at the church, at 2 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 14.
