Francis D. Topper,
retired WWII veteran,
Francis D. Topper, 80, of Lewes, formerly of York, Pa., died Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, at his residence.
He was the husband of Ruth E. (Crisman) Topper and the late Eva B. (Koons) Topper.
Mr. Topper was born Nov. 9, 1924 in York, son of the late Joseph C. and Edna (Weaver) Topper. He retired as a supervisor from the New York Wire Co. in York with 41 years of service.
He was also a WWII Army veteran with the 10th Armored division and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of the AARP Long Neck 4903, Loyal Order of the Moose, American Legion and the VFW.
Besides his wife he is also survived by three daughters, Linda L. Clements, Patricia A. Vaughn, and Donna M. Miller, all of York, Pa.; two stepsons, John Bruggeman, of Dover, Pa. and Scott Bruggeman of York, Pa., two stepdaughters, Ellen Swam, of N.Y., and Elaine Hecht, of Ga; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Joseph I. Topper Sr., of York.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m., Wednesday, Nov. 17, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 2935 Kingston Rd., York, Pa. Viewing will be one hour prior Wednesday at the church.
Burial will be in Prospect Hill cemetery
with military honors by the York County Veteran’s Honor Guard.

John ‘Jack’ Bateman,
retired art teacher
John “Jack” Bateman, 90, of Lewes, passed away Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, at Harbor Healthcare Center, Lewes.
Mr. Bateman was born in San Francisco, Calif., son of the late John Bateman Sr. and Caroline (Ware) Bateman. He was a graduate of Haddonfield Memorial High School in Haddonfield, N.J. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts for four years, majoring in Illustration. From 1939 to 1942 he served on the art staff of the National Advertising Manufacturing Company in Philadelphia. He then served four years in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946, serving 19 months in India.
Following his service in the Army, Jack worked with the art staff of Betner Bag Company in Devon, Pa., until 1947 when he enrolled in the School of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania. He graduated in 1949 with a bachelor of fine arts degree. That same year he joined the faculty of the Northfield, Vt., Public Schools where he taught art. In 1951 he moved to Springfield, Vt., and was named director of art for the public school system. He remained there for 25 years.
While at Springfield he was faculty adviser to the high school newspaper, “The Green Horn,” and in 1962 received the Gold Key Award from Columbia Scholastic Press Association in recognition for his work in this field. In 1963 Jack received a John Hay award for four weeks of study in the humanities at the University of Oregon, and later served as a consultant there. In 1968 he accompanied a group of students in a study program at the University for Foreigners in Perugia, Italy.
Jack and his late wife, Marion, moved to Lewes in 1976, where he worked in the field of calligraphy, specializing in illuminations; and in the writing of his book “Harbor of Refuge.” Jack credited his wife Marion with the success of his book, due to her unrelenting encouragement. Jack and Marion were members of Bethel United Methodist Church in Lewes, where they became very active in many areas of service in the church community. Until June of 2004 he wrote a seniors column for the “Coast Press” for 20 years, with the last column appearing in August 2004, featuring a local senior citizen. He also taught short courses in calligraphy at Delaware Technical & Community College. He was a member of the Rehoboth Art League.
In addition to his parents, Jack was predeceased by his wife Marion (Horter) Bateman in June 1998. He is survived by a daughter Martha Yager of Henniker, N.H.; two adopted daughters, Patricia Berube and Sandra Bordeau and their families; and three grandchildren: Christopher Yager, Jessica Yager and Benjamin Yager.
A memorial service will be held at Bethel United Methodist Church, Fourth & Market Streets, Lewes, at 1 p.m., Tuesday Nov. 16, with the Rev. David Palmer officiating. Burial will be private in Bethel Methodist cemetery , Lewes. Contributions are suggested to Bethel United Methodist Church in memory of Jack Bateman.
Donald L. Ganrude,
retired truck driver
Donald L. Ganrude, 72, of Lewes, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, at his home.
Born in Spring Grove, MN, he served in the US Army from 1949 until 1952 during the Korean War. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, a member of the Rehoboth Beach VFW and was a decorated Korean War veteran. Mr. Ganrude had been employed as a truck driver in over the road hauling.
Mr. Ganrude was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy, in 1995.
He is survived by his stepson, Robert Coleman of Milton; his stepdaughter, Pattie Marsh of Glen Burnie, Md.; two brothers, Merv Ganrude of Minnesota and Bobby Ganrude of Illinois; a sister, Marilyn Hayes of Iowa; five grandchildren, Charles, Jack, Darin, Christopher and Christine; and two greatgrandchildren, Joseph and Caitlin.
Funeral Services will be held Friday, Nov. 12, at 11 a.m., at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, with the Rev. David Palmer officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at White’s Chapel, Route 1, Milton.

Daniel E. Goodman Jr.,
Mountaire employee
Daniel E. Goodman Jr., 60, of Frankford died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at home.
Mr. Goodman was born in Williamsville, between Selbyville and Fenwick Island, son of the late Daniel F. Sr. and Grace Coston Goodman.
He worked for the housekeeping department of Mountaire Farms of Delmarva Inc. in Selbyville.
Mr. Goodman was a member of St. Matthew’s Baptist Church, Bishopville, Md.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Joyce Ann Handy Goodman; five sons, Anthony Goodman of Greenwood, Kevin Handy of Dover, Keith Handy and Kendall Handy, both of Frankford, and Michael Handy of Lewes; four daughters, Lisa Johnson of Selbyville, Allison Marshall of Pittsville, Md., Kimberly Peed of El Paso, Texas, and Abbygail Handy of Georgetown; two sisters, Mabel Custis of Frankford and Bernice Goodman of Georgetown; 26 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m., Saturday, at Zoar United Methodist Church, Roxana, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be private.
Dr. Harry L. Hoch,
former ER director at Beebe
Dr. Harry L. Hoch, 81, of Milton, died Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at Green Valley Terrace, Millsboro.
Dr. Hoch was the eldest son of Harry Keller Hoch and Arrelee Lattomus Hoch, who had lived in Middletown.
He attended the University of Delaware, Montana State College, the University of Idaho and the University of Kansas, and then graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1949.
Dr. Hoch was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II.
He interned at the Delaware Hospital of Wilmington (now Christiana Care-Wilmington Hospital), followed by 25 years of family practice in Middletown. Afterwards, he became director of the Emergency Department at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Dr. Hoch was a lifelong outdoorsman with a renowned passion for quail hunting. He walked across most of the rural parts of the Eastern Shore in the quest of covey rises behind his faithful dogs. His battle with Parkinson’s disease was significant in his final years.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jenny Louise Lockwood Hoch; a brother and sister-in-law, John W. and Gwendolyn Hoch; a daughter, Anne Hoch Shahrabani; a son, Harry L. Hoch Jr.; and two grandsons, Christopher Shahrabani and Patrick Shahrabani.
Services were private.

Ethel A. Baker “Dee” Settle,

Ethel A. Baker “Dee” Settle, 99, of Rehoboth Beach, formerly of Takoma Park, Md., died Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, at home.
Mrs. Settle was born Jan. 13, 1905, daughter of the late Charles and Mary Katherine Settle.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar W. Settle Sr.; a son, Donald Lawrence Settle; and a daughter, Anne Wood.
She is survived by a son, Edgar W. Settle Jr. of Rehoboth Beach; a daughter-in-law, Ellen Settle of Rehoboth Beach; a daughter, June C. McWilliams of Rehoboth Beach; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
Services were private.

Charles E. Goepel,
retired engineer
Charles Edwin Goepel, 78, of Long Neck, went home to be with the Lord Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004.
Mr. Goepel was a senior engineer for Boeing Vertol in Ridley Park, Pa., retiring in 1985 after 32 years of service, and co-owner of the Creamy Cone on Long Neck.
He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the U.S. Army Air Force.
He was a member of the Long Neck United Methodist Church, Masonic Jefferson Lodge 15 of Lewes, Knights Templar of Chester, Pa., Joppa Council of Delaware, the Chester Commandry, FOP Sussex 2, American Legion Post 28 of Oak Orchard/Riverdale, VFW Post 7234 of Quillen’s Point, Ocean view, Lower Delaware Shield and Square, Lower Delaware Computer Club, Lower Delaware British Car Club and the Sussex County Stamp Club.
He was a founder and member of the Long Neck Business Association, was a WBOC Weather Watcher and also a private pilot and member of the Delaware Pilots Association.
He was preceded in death by his son, John R. Goepel.
He is survived by his wife, Lois H. Goepel; a stepdaughter, Linda Binkley and her husband, Dale; nine grandchildren, John R. Goepel Jr., James Edwin Goepel and wife Sherri, Anthony Goepel, Diana Sue Dietz and partner Judith Lamplugh, James Dietz USMC, Sandy Dietz, Keith Binkley and wife Kimberly, Carolyn Binkley, Megan Anderson and Husband Eric; three great-grandchildren, Justin, Cassidy and Shelby; a sister, Beatrice Muth and husband James; adopted sister, Carol Loy, and her husband Walter; and two nephews.
A celebration of life and Masonic service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 13, at Long Neck United Methodist Church. Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Sudina,
retired bookkeeper
Elizabeth ”Betty” Sudina, 76, of Millville and formerly of Baltimore, died at home Friday, Nov. 5, 2005.
She was a retired bookkeeper for Wilgus Real Estate in Bethany Beach and also owned a cleaning business.
Betty was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Bethany Beach, the Red Hat Tricks and a Bronze Life Master of the Delaware Bridge Association Unit 190.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Naomi A. Sudina; and a sister, Naomi Brossus.
She is survived by two sons, Bernard J. Brockmeyer of Baltimore, Md. and Raymond K. Sudina of Milllville; a daughter, Susan Ann Mills of Rehoboth Beach; three grandchildren, James E. Paugh III, Brandon J. Brockmeyer and his wife Grace, and Amanda Finkelstein; two great-grandchildren; and the Brossus family of Los Angeles, Ca.
A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 2 p.m., Friday, Nov. 12, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Garfield Parkway, Bethany Beach. Burial will be private.

Nancy Ann Cannon,

Nancy Ann Cannon, 41, of Bridgeville, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2004, after a long illness, in the home of her mother.
Ms. Cannon was born Jan. 8, 1963, daughter of Lizzie Cannon of Bridgeville and the late Fred Cannon.
She attended Georgetown Elementary School and Woodbridge High School.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a sister.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by two daughters, Nicole L. Cannon of Bridgeville and Katrina L. Cannon of Laurel; seven brothers, Richard Cannon, Charles Cannon, Fred Cannon III and Danny Kane, all of Bridgeville, Douglas Cannon of Milton and Paul Cannon of Lehigh, Fla.; five sisters, Mary Cannon, Theresa Cannon, Barbara Dredden and Georgianna Cannon, all of Bridgeville, and Angelance Benson of Milford; three granddaughters, Siane Cannon and Briana Owens, both of Laurel and Doneisha Smith of Bridgeville; two sisters-in-law, Diane Cannon of Milton and Gwen Cannon of Georgetown; two brothers-in-law, James Dredden of Bridgeville and Harry Benson of Milford; seven aunts; five uncles; and a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
Services were held in Greater Faith Temple Church of God, Bridgeville, with burial in Middleford cemetery , Seaford.
William A. Stockley,

William A. Stockley, 85, of Harbeson, died Thursday, Nov. 4, 2004, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Mr. Stockley was born in Harbeson on Feb. 14, 1919, the son of the late John and Hattie Simpler Stockley.
He worked as a construction foreman until his retirement in 1984. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Georgetown, and Harrington Moose Lodge, Harrington. He enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Frances Stockley, in 1994; his daughter, Wilma S. Wright; a son-in-law, Norman T. Wright; and a sister, Eunice S. Royce.
He is survived by three daughters, Mary Banks and her husband David, of Georgetown, Marie Willin and her husband Bill of Lewes, and Katharine Ritter and her husband Ronald of Lewes; seven grandchildren, Lou Anne Banks, Mark Banks, Keith Banks, Kevin Wright, Bill Willin and Leslie Rivera; eight great-grandchildren, Mark Alan Banks, Michael Banks, Troy Rogers, Jordan Banks, Tyler Wright and Joshua Wright.
Services will be held at 1 p.m.,Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2004, in the Chapel of Short Funeral Services Inc., 609 E. Market Street, Georgetown, where friends may call one hour earlier. Burial will follow in Union cemetery , Georgetown.
