Abbate, Frances

Frances Abbate of Dover died Tuesday, April 03, 2001 in Westminster Village Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Dover. She was 84.

Mrs. Abbate was born on January 30, 1917 to the late Angelo and Lucy Aiosa. After moving to Delaware, she and her family resided in Hartly and had lived there most of her life.

She first worked for the Wyoming Hosiery Mill and then worked for the Fisherman Department Store in Dover. Her last place of employment was for Richardson & Robbins in Dover where she worked in production for 25 years, retiring in 1975.

Mrs. Abbate was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Marydel. She was very active within the women’s organization of the church. She also did volunteer work at the Modern Maturity Center in Dover.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Abbate, on September 8, 1976.

She is survived by three sons, Joseph Abbate of Hartly, Angelo Abbate of Milford, and Anthony Abbate of Milford; a daughter, Teresa Brown of Frederica; three brothers, Mario Aiosa of Michigan, Murphy Aiosa of Wisconsin, and James Aiosa of Long Island, N.Y.; a sister, Ann Wood of New York; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and her family and friends at Westminster.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held 2 PM Friday, April 6, 2001 in the Holy Cross Catholic Church, 631 S. State Street, Dover. Friends may call from 7 PM to 9 PM on Thursday evening at Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford Street, Dover. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Dover.

Adams, Jack H.

Jack H. Adams Jack H. Adams, 73, of Rising Sun, MD, died Wednesday, December 27, 2000 in Perry Point VA Hospital. He was born in Imperial, PA on June 22, 1927 and was a son of the late Jacob and Suzanna Adams. Mr. Adams was a WWII veteran in US Marine Corp. He served aboard the USS Breckenridge in the South Pacific. He was a life member of the American Legion Post #194 in Rising Sun and a life member of the VFW Post #418 in McKees Rocks, PA. He was a member of various horseman organizations. Mr. Adams was a blacksmith and an owner, trainer and driver of Standard Breed trotting horses. He was an avid outdoorsman. Mr. Adams is survived by sons, Joseph Adams and John Adams, both of Rising Sun, MD; daughters, Valerie Adams of Folsom, CA and Elizabeth Gwaltney of North East, MD; brother, Charles Adams of Pittsburgh, PA; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Visitation is set for Saturday, December 30, 2000 at the R.T. FOARD FUNERAL HOME, 111 S. Queen Street, Rising Sun, MD. Funeral service and burial to be held in Imperial, PA.

SHIRLEY ANN ADKINS

Age 66 of NE 2nd St., Milford, DE died Friday, December 15, 2000 at home. Mrs. Adkins was a homemaker all her life. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Adkins, in 1993 and a son, Douglas E. Adkins, in 1998. She is survived by 2 sons; Ben A. Adkins of Milford, DE and Steven J. Adkins of Hockessin, DE, a daughter, Linda J. Johnson of Milford, DE, a sister, Joe Lee Callaway of Milford, DE and 4 grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, December 19, 2000 at Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Avenue, Milford, DE, where friends may greet the family 1 hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milford, DE. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to Delaware Hospice, Lotus Plaza, 911 S. DuPont Hwy, Dover, DE, 19901.

Alderman, Ruth A.

Ruth A. Alderman, 84, of Rising Sun, MD died Thursday, March 15, 2001 at Union Hospital in Elkton, MD. Mrs. Alderman, a homemaker, was born on December 8, 1916 in Oxford, PA. She was a member of the American Legion Post 194 Ladies Auxiliary. She is survived by a son, Ronald Riley and a sister, Peggy Blesch, both of Rising Sun; 3 grandchildren, Robin Riley of Silver Spring, MD, Randy Riley of Rising Sun, and Michele Brown of Conowingo, MD; and 3 great grandchildren, Lindsey Riley, Samantha Riley and Trever Brown. She is preceded in death by her husbands, Street Eugene Riley, who passed away in 1955 and Mack L. Alderman, who passed away in 1993. Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday March 19, 2001 at R. T. FOARD FUNERAL HOME, 111 S. Queen St., Rising Sun where friends may call Sunday evening from 7 - 9 p.m. Burial will be in West Nottingham Cemetery, Colora, MD.

Allen, Jr., Harold Q.

HAROLD Q. ALLEN, JR., of Magnolia died Friday, February 23, 2001 in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 68. Mr. Allen was born May 12, 1932 in Philadelphia, the son of the late Harold Allen Sr. and Dorothy (McGarland) Allen. He worked as a security guard for Bennett Security. Mr. Allen loved to fish and crab. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Chapman Allen. He is survived by his loving companion of 20 years, Sarah Emerson of Magnolia; a son, Rex Allen of Dover; two daughters, Deborah Fleetwood and Judy Allen, both of Dover; two step-sons, William Emerson and Christopher Emerson both of Dover; a step-daughter, Helen Schwinger of Dover; two brothers, Frederick Allen and Robert Allen, both of Dover; three sisters, Mary Davis, Edna Heverin, and Dorothy Allen, all of Dover; and 17 grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 27, 2001 in the Emmanuel M.E. Church Cemetery, Townsend. Arrnagements by Torbert Funeral Chapel, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, Dover.

Raymond "Ray" A. "Sonny" Alvarez, Sr.

Age 68 of Wilmington died Friday, March 2, 2001 at home with his family. Mr. Alvarez was a concrete contractor and owner of Alvarez, Inc. He was known as Sonny Alvarez and will be remembered as the Prince of Concrete. He was also a union contractor for Local #36. He was a sergeant in the Marine Corps and served two terms in the Korean War. He enjoyed hunting and belonged to hunt clubs. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Theresa A. "Terri" Alvarez; his sons, Raymond A. Alvarez, Jr. of Newark and Joseph Dominick, IV of Wilmington; his daughters Terri Kerner of Newark, Robin Karnai of Kenton, DE and Barbara DiRocco of Newark; his sisters Ann Sally of Wilmington and Rose of Wilmington; 14 Grandchildren; and his loving dog Tara. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service at the DOHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 3200 Limestone Rd., Pike Creek on Wednesday morning, March 7, 2001 at 10 am. Interment will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 7-9 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Disabled Veterans, 1601 Kirkwood Hwy., Wilmington, DE 19805.

Arcaro, Marguerite A.

MARGUERITE A. ARCARO, of Felton died Monday, January 8, 2001 at home. She was 54.

She was born May 25, 1946 in Queens, New York to Golda V. Arcaro of Corinth, New York, and the late Carl E. Arcaro.

She was a homemaker. She enjoyed crocheting.

Besides her mother she is survived by her husband of 7 years: James T. Stanley of Felton; 3 step-children: Frances Stanley of Bel Air, MD, Russell Stanley of Aberdeen, MD, Dawn Stanley of Toronto, Canada; a niece, whom she raised, Tina Macomber of Felton and her children Kenny and Melony Macomber; a sister: Paula Jane Arthur of Media, PA.

Memorial services will be held 3:00 p.m. Saturday, January 13, 2001 in the Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, Dover, with the Rev. Ronald Wuest officiating. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.

Arndt, Sr., Christian

DOVER -- Christian Arndt, Sr., of Dover, and formerly of Camden- Wyoming, died Monday, January 8, 2001 in Capitol Health Care Services, Dover, where he had been a resident for the past three years. Before his nursing home stay he was a resident of Green Meadows, Dover. He was 94. Mr. Arndt, Sr. was born in Romania on September 11, 1906, son of the late Mathilde Bechi and Gottfried Arndt. He was a member and former Deacon of The Christ Memorial Baptist Church, Dover. Mr. Arndt had worked for the City of Dover as a shift supervisor for public works and retired in 1971. He is predeceased by his wife Melitta M. Arndt in October 1985. He is survived by five sons Bert Arndt of Wyoming, Helmut Arndt of Colorado, Christian Arndt, Jr. of Cerritos, California, Ernest Arndt of Viola and David Arndt of Dover and a daughter Erna Arndt of Silver Spring, MD, 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Saturday in The Christ Memorial Baptist Church, 1160 E. Lebanon Road, Dover, where the family will receive friends from noon until service time. Burial will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover. Arrangements are by Pippin Funeral Home, Wyoming. Letters of condolences may be sent via e-mail to pippin@magpage.com.

Artis, Elizabeth N.

Elizabeth "Libby" Neeman Artis of Forrest Avenue, Dover died on Friday, February 2nd, at Christiana Medical Center, Newark. She was 80 years old.

Mrs. Artis was born October 8, 1920 in Felton, Delaware to the late Charles and Grace Dill Neeman. She was married to William Walter Artis, who preceded her in death on December 28, 1997.

She worked for the State of Delaware as a bookkeeper for 19 years; in both the Dover School District, and also serving in the State Treasurer's Office from 1965 to 1980. In addition, she worked for Emmanuel's Department Store in downtown Dover. She and her husband also owned school buses.

She was a member of Peoples Church of Dover, where she and her husband were married; Modern Maturity, where she delivered Meals on Wheels; and she belonged to two bowling leagues for many years. She was loved by school children, who referred to her as "Aunt Libby".

Mrs. Artis is survived by a son, Wayne Artis, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; a daughter, Jean Artis Read and her husband, Harry, of Wilmington; two brothers, Roland Neeman and his wife, Catherine, of Camden and Jerry Neeman and his wife, Marie of Wilmington. Also surviving are four grandsons, Brian F. Willey and his wife, Laura of Lathrup Village, Michigan, Jason Artis Willey and Blake Allen Willey, both of Wilmington, Mark Artis, who is working and residing in Geneva, Switzerland; and two great-granddaughters, Alexandra Elizabeth Willey and Jacqueline Willey of Lathrup Village, Michigan.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, February 6, 2001 at 1 PM at the Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 South Bradford Street, Dover. Friends may call on Monday evening at the funeral chapel from 7 to 9 PM. Interment will be in Lakeside Cemetery, Dover.

Ashworth, Marjorie Remley

Marjorie Remley Ashworth of Sacramento, CA, formerly of Delaware, died Monday, February 26, 2001 in Sacramento. She was 75.

Mrs. Ashworth was born on August 8, 1925 in Cheswold to the late Elizabeth Scarborough Remley and Norris Lee Remley.

She was a 1942 graduate and valedictorian of Dover High School. She continued her studies and graduated from the University of Delaware with a B.A. in Chemistry and worked as a research chemist for Sun Oil Company prior to raising a family.

Mrs. Ashworth was a sports enthusiast, a bicycler, a runner, and a champion bowler. She was also an avid and expert bridge player from the time she was young.

She was a loving wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, sister, and a devoted friend. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Mrs. Ashworth is survived by her husband, Robert W. Ashworth of Sacramento; three children, Robert Ashworth, Jr. of Sacramento, Susan Ashworth of Philadelphia, and Richard Ashworth and his wife Joanne of Altadena, CA; and two grandchildren, Adrienne and Brendon of Altadena, CA.

Funeral Services will be held 12 Noon Saturday, March 10, 2001 in Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford St., Dover. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Bethel Cemetery, Cheswold.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to the Alzheimer’s Association of Delaware, 2306 Kirkwood Hwy., Wilmington, DE 19805.

Atkinson, Juanita D.

Juanita D. Atkinson of Smyrna, Delaware, died at home Saturday November 18, 2000. She was 41. Miss Atkinson was born October 21, 1959 in New Castle, Delaware, the daughter of the late C. Wayne and Virginia Wooster Atkinson with whom she lived. She worked as a CSR for Signa Health Care of New Castle, Delaware. In addition to her mother, she is survived by a sister, Wanda L. Atkinson of Smyrna, Delaware and her maternal grandmother, Virginia M. Wooster of Dover, Delaware. Services will be Tuesday November 21, 2000 at 7PM in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main Street Smyrna, Delaware where friends may call from 6:30 to 7PM. Arrangements are by Faries Funeral Directors, Inc., 29 South Main Street Smyrna, Delaware.
