Florence (Carter) Slaughter
Age 77 of Wilmington, DE passed away Wednesday March 21, 2001. Florence worked for Star Color Press and the Medical Center of Delaware. She was a loving mother, and grandmother. Florence is survived by her children, Thomas M. Slaughter of Wilmington, DE, Patricia (Vorous) Winans of Newark, DE, Kathleen Cannon of Wilmington, DE; 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service at the DOHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 3200 Limestone Rd., Pike Creek on Tuesday, March 27th at 10am. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. KENNETH A. SLOANE
Age 60 of Bloomfield Drive, Harrington, DE, died Saturday, December 9, 2000 at Milford Center, Milford, DE. Mr. Sloane was a driver for United Parcel Service for 31 years, retiring in 1995. He was a veteran of the U.S.A.F. and a member of the Milford Temple Lodge #9 A.F.&A.M., York Rite, St. Andrew’s Knights Templar of Dover, AARP, and the Harrington Senior Center. He enjoyed activities with his family, golf and traveling. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Edwina R. Sloane, a step-mother, Alice Sloane of Belle Vernon, PA, 2 daughters; Kimberly Rigby and her husband Roy and Karen S. Stevenson and her husband Glen all of Lincoln, DE, a brother, Edward Sloane of Wheeling, WVA, a sister, Carole Magill of West Newton, PA, and 2 grandchildren; Taylor Rigby and Clay Stevenson. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 13, 2000 at Rogers Funeral Home, 301 Lakeview Avenue, Milford, DE. Interment will be in Hollywood Cemetery, Harrington, DE. Smith, F. Loren
F. Loren Smith Age 80, of Newark, died peacefully at Christiana Care Hospital after a short illness. He was born in Denver, CO in 1920 the son of a methodist minister and moved several times till he settled in New Jersey. He received his Bachelor's degree at Oberlin College where he met the love of his life and was married in 1943 before serving overseas as a weatherman in the Army Air Force during WWII. Upon his safe return to his wife and new son, he returned to Oberlin to complete his Masters degree and then received his Doctorate from Johns Hopkins University. He then came to the University of Delaware where he helped to found the Psychology Department, and devoted the next 32 years to teaching and research in psycho-physiological audition. Mr. Smith is survived by his wife, Eleanor H. Smith of Newark, DE, his sons, Winthrop, of Plattsburgh, NY, Jeremy, of Ithaca, NY and Benjamin, of Elkton, MD, his daughter, Randy, of Stowe, VT, his brother Wade, of Scotch Plains, NJ, nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Services were private at the request of Mr. Smith, however a small gathering was held at his home on Saturday, January 27, 2001. Arrangements were made by ROBERT T. EDWARD W. SMITHEMAN, of Dover died Tuesday February 13, 2001 in the Westminster Village Nursing Home, Dover. He was 84.
Mr. Smitheman was born September 21, 1916 in Haddenfield, New Jersey to the late John & Marion (Able) Smitheman.
Mr. Smitheman graduated from the University of Delaware with an Engineering degree.
Mr. Smitheman was an U.S. Army Veteran serving during WWII and Korean Wars.
Mr. Smitheman worked for the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers as an Electrical Engineer until his retirement in 1969.
Funeral services will be held private at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in the West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Philadelphia, PA. Arrangements by Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford Street, Dover.
Sparco, Louis J. "Chocolate"
Louis J. “Chocolate” Sparco, age 71, of Cooper Farms, died November 30, 2000 at the Christiana Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Wilmington, DE, he was the son of the late Madeleine and Stephen Sparco. Louis was owner of the Louis J. Sparco Hardwood Floors Co. for 45 years and was know for his quality workmanship. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a member of the American Legion Post 0004, and also the Claymore Senior Center and St. Anthony’s R. C. Church. Louis, in his retirement, loved going on trips and was a avid horse fan of Delaware Park.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, December 4 at 10:00 am at St. Anthony of Padua Church. 9th and Dupont Streets, Wilmington. There will be no viewing. Interment will be at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, 100 W. 10th Street, Wilmington, DE 19801. Spencer, Mary E.
Mary E. Spencer, 84, of Salisbury, died Thursday, November 9, 2000 at her home in Salisbury. Born in Monaca, PA, she was the daughter of the late Thomas Morrison and Ella Hayes Morrison. Her first husband, James W. Reese, who was a Lt. Colonel in the U.S. Air Force, died in 1965, and her second husband, Edward J. Spencer died in 1981.
Mrs. Spencer was an active member of Asbury United Methodist Church. She served on the Altar Guild, worked at the Opportunity Shop, taught a Discipleship Class, and funded the casting of pewter baptismal medallions for babies. She was a member and past president of the Wicomico County Women’s Club. A member of the Wicomico County Arts Council, a member of the Wicomico County Transportation Board, a member of AARP and Happy Timers and was a member and contact person for Newcomers and was a member of the Wicomico County Garden Club. She endowed a designated fund through the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore to provide a scholarship for women pursuing a career in education. She endowed a designated fund at the Ward Museum and the Wicomico County Arts Council thru the Community Foundation.
She is survived by two daughters: Marcia R. Puente of Quantico, MD and Megan L. Spencer of Syracuse, NY; four step-children: Mary D. Miller of Pembroke Pines, FL, Ellen M. Spencer, Edward J. Spencer III and Susan E. Spencer all of Syracuse, NY; seven grandchildren: Lee Shannon, Adam Puente, James Shannon all of Salisbury, Michael Miller of Tallahassee, FL, Taylor Spencer, Courtney Spencer and Evan Spencer all of Syracuse, NY; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday, November 14, 2000, at 11:00 A.M. at the Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury. Visitation will be Monday evening from 7 to 9 P.M. The Rev. Laura Swett and Rev. Wes Davis will officiate. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, VA November 15, 2000.

Mary R. Staats of Smyrna, Delaware, died at home, Wednesday January 17, 2001. She was 92. Mrs. Staats was born September 27, 1908 in Cheswold, Delaware, the daughter of the late Frank and Bessie Jones Robinson. She was a homemaker. Her husband, A. Ford Staats died in 1971. She is survived by 1 son, Herman H. Staats of Millsboro, Delaware; 1 daughter, Mary Ann McNatt with whom she lived; 1 brother, Frank Robinson of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware; 5 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren. Services will be Saturday January 20, 2001 at 2PM in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main Street Smyrna, Delaware, where friends may call 1 hour before services. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery Smyrna, Delaware.
Starkey, Jessie Rebecca
Jessie Rebecca Starkey, 88 of Klair Estates, died on Sunday February 4, 2001 at Manor Care, Pike Creek. Mrs. Starkey was a Captain in the U.S. Army Air Corp during WWII, serving as a dietician and was a dietary consultant until 1973. She was a graduate of Texas State College for Women and a volunteer at the Christiana Hospital. She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Jack F. Starkey and her children Sandra Browne, Jack F. Starkey, Jr., and David Starkey all of Florida and Diana Allen of Wilmington, 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Services will be on Friday February 9, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. in the MCCRERY MEMORIAL CHAPEL Kirkwood Hwy (Rt. 2 east) and Duncan Rd. where friends may call after 10:30 a.m. Burial will be at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
Stearns, Douglas Burke
Douglas Burke Stearns, age 84, of Stonegates died peacefully on January 5th after a valiant fight with cancer.
Born in Albany, NY, Mr. Stearns was a 1938 alumnus of Williams College. He retired in 1978 as Vice President of Medical Economics Publishing, Inc. He was a longtime member of the US Seniors Golf Association. An Army veteran of WW II, he was discharged as a major after three years of service in the Pacific theater. Always a gentleman, devoted husband, and beloved father, he will be profoundly missed by his family and friends.
He leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Mari (Corroon), four children: sons; James, of Indiana, Douglas, Jr., of Rhode Island, and Michael of California, and a daughter Nancy Calcagnini, of New York. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Family and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial, Tuesday morning 10:30 AM at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Catholic Church, 10 Old Church Rd., Greenville, DE. Calling hours will be Monday evening 6-8 PM at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown Rds. Interment in the St. Joesph Cemetery.

Steele, Hilda H.
Hilda H. Steele Age 66, of New Castle, DE, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at Manor Care of Pike Creek. Mrs. Steele was born in Twin Oaks, PA, the daughter of Reuben W. and Viola C. Heath. Mrs. Steele had worked for the DuPont Company in Wilmington for 18 years as a secretary and then retired from First Card Bank after 8 years of service. She is preceded in death by her father, Reuben W. Heath. She is survived by her mother, Viola C. Heath of Newark, DE, her son, Joseph R. Smith of New Castle, 2 daughters, Gloria J. Carrow of Wilmington, DE and Claire R. Walker and her partner John Pientka, both of New Castle, her sisters, Ruby E. Bibbs of Bear, Rachele E. Zane of Marshalton and Sherry L. Capano of Delray Beach, FL, 6 grandchildren, Sarah, Aron, Billy, Erik, Jody and Laura, 5 great-grandchildren, 4 nephews and 4 nieces. Services will be held 1:30pm, Monday, March 26, 2001 at the ROBERT T. JONES & FOARD FUNERAL HOME, 122 W. Main St., Newark, DE where family and friends may visit at 12:30pm. Burial will be in the Head of Christiana Cemetery following the service.
RAYMOND EDWARD STEELE, JR.
HARRINGTON -- Raymond Edward Steele, Jr. of Harrington, died Tuesday, January 23, 2001 in his home. He was 44. Mr. Steele, Jr. was born on June 9, 1957, in Wilmington, Delaware, son of Roseanna Graham Steele and Raymond Edward Steele, Sr. of Felton. Although challenged with disabilities, Mr. Steele loved to fish and was an avid Dallas Cowboy Fan. Mr. Steele, Jr. is predeceased by his wife Frances Wood Steele in March 1995. He is survived by a son Jeremiah Kelly Steele of Harrington, a brother John Steele of Delaware, Ohio, four sisters Sherry McGregor of Naples, FL, Suzanne Tramontana of Ewing Township, NJ, Debbie Hollegor of Lincoln and Roseanne Maloney of Felton. Services will be 6:00 p.m. Saturday in the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 West Camden-Wyoming Avenue, Wyoming, where the family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until service time. Stephenson, Charles F.
Charles F. Stephenson Age 83, of Elkton, MD died January 26, 2001 in the Union Hospital, Elkton, MD. Mr. Stephenson was a WWII Veteran serving in the United States Air Force from 1940-1945. He then attended and graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1951 and became involved in the frozen foods and bakery businesses. He was a member of the Retail Bakers of Philadelphia, PA as well as the Wholesale Bakers of PA. He also served as the Vice President of the Philadelphia Pioneers Track Club as well as being the Rear Commador for the Northeast River Yacht Club. Mr. Stephenson is survived by his wife, Bettie C. Stephenson of Elkton, MD, 3 daughters, Paula Dawson of Buckingham, PA; Lilla Mae Stephenson, of Doylestown, PA and Patti Elliott of Middleburg, VA, 2 Step-sons, Robert Briel of Medford, NJ and Ronald Briel of Frederick, PA, a sister, Mary Walker of Norfolk, VA and 7 grandchildren. Salisbury: Louise Bounds Stewart, 87, of Salisbury died on Friday January 19, 2001 at the Snow Hill Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Stockton, MD on September 9, 1913 she was the daughter of the late William F. and Bessie Bounds. Her husband, Marion F. Stewart who died in 1994, a son William F. Stewart who died in 1996 and a granddaughter, Lana Michelle Stewart who died in 1993, preceded her in death. Mrs. Stewart was employed with the United States Postal Service for 28 years as secretary to the Postal Inspector. She is survived by a son, Robert T. Stewart of Salisbury, a grandson, Andrew T. Stewart of Ocean City, a brother, William Bounds of Chester, MD and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11:00 A.M. at the Bounds Funeral Home on E. Main St. in Salisbury where family and friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. J. Harvey Dixon will officiate. Interment will follow in Parsons Cemetery in Salisbury.

Carolyn Stilwell Age 85, of Newark, DE, died Tuesday, March 20, 2001 at the Christiana Hospital, Newark. Mrs. Stilwell was a graduate of the "old" Wilmington High School. She was a Navy WAVES Veteran of WWII and a retired Supervisor of the Typing Pool at the DuPont Co. Mrs. Stilwell was an avid Bridge player, belonging to several groups, as well as and avid bowler at the Brunswick Lanes in the Newark Shopping Center. She was a member of the Red Clay Creek Garden Club, the Newark Century Club, the Newark Senior Center, the Newark Charitable and Social Club and the St. Marks U.M. Church in Stanton. Mrs. Stilwell is preceded in death by her husband Frank C. Stilwell, who died in 1989. She is survived by her brother, Thomas E. Stewart of Wilmington, DE, sister, Jean Thoms of Sweetwater, NJ, step-daughter, Patricia Burbage of Wilmington, DE, step-son, Frank H. Stilwell of Atlanta, GA , nephew Edward T. Stewart, also of Wilmington, 7 step-grandchildren and 8 step-great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held 11am, Friday, March 23, 2001 at the St. Mark's United Methodist Church, 1700 Limestone Road, Stanton, DE. Burial will be private at the convenience of the family.
