Granville R. Carey
native of Laurel
Granville R. Carey, age 79, of Lewes, passed away peacefully at Harbor Healthcare in Lewes on Tuesday, December 7, 2004.
Mr. Carey was born in Laurel, and was a communicant of St. Peter’s Church in Lewes.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Simmons Carey; his sons William R. Carey and his wife June, Robert C. Carey and Granville Ralph Carey; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Norris Givens and George R. Carey as well as many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Carey served in the U.S. Army during World War II. His many community activities included coach and player agent for the Lewes Little League over a good many years; a member of the Lewes Lions Club and the American Legion of Seaford, DE. Additionally his activities included working closely with the youth group of St. Peter’s.
A memorial service will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Second and Market streets, Lewes, at 1 p.m., Saturday, December 11. A reception will follow immediately in the Parish Hall.
Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes, Lewes.

Carl K. Walters Jr.,
retired master sergeant
Carl K. Walters Jr., 80, of Lewes and formerly of Lancaster, Pa., died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Mr. Walters was born in Lancaster, the son of the late Carl Sr. and Laura Kline Walters.
He retired as a master sergeant from the U.S. Army in 1967, after serving his country for 24 years in Turkey, Korea and Germany, and with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. He had also previously served in the U.S. Navy and was a survivor of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
After his retirement from the armed forces, he served as the Lancaster, Pa. city streets superintendent from 1968 to 1970 and then was a building supplies salesman until 1978.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Lewes, and the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and a life member of Disabled American Veterans Association, and formerly was a member of Media Heights Golf Club.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ella Mae Lear Walters, in 1970; and by two sisters.
He is survived by his wife, Felice E. Paterniani Walters of Coatesville, Pa.; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Kim K. Walters and Wayne C. and Nancy Wooten Walters, all of Wilmington, and Skip J. and Pamela Bupp Walters of Lancaster; two daughters and a son-in-law, Sandra and Laurence Hall of Millersville, Pa. and Lynn M. Paules of Lancaster; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Edna L. Carson of Lancaster and Geraldine L. Sides of Leola, Pa.
Services and burial were held in Indiantown Gap National cemetery , Pa., with full military honors.

David J. Moxey,
former yacht club commodore
David J. Moxey, 68, of Lewes, formerly of Bel Air and Elkton, Md., died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at the home of a friend in Bel Air.
Mr. Moxey was a salesman at Boulevard Ford at Midway in Lewes and a member of the Maryland National Guard.
He was a member of Conley’s United Methodist Church in Angola, was past commodore of the Chesapeake Bay Yacht Club Association and the Bush River Yacht Club.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara R. Moxey; a son, David J. Moxey Jr.; a daughter Deborah Batzer; stepson, Lloyd Shaw; stepdaughters, Donna O’Brien and Sandra Parlier; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and a step-great-grandchild.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 11 at Conley’s United Methodist Church, 22150 Robinsonville Road, Lewes, with burial private.

Veronica Cannon,
active in church, community
Veronica Cannon, 85, of Wilmington, and formerly of Greenwood, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004 at HCR/Manor Care of Brandywine Hundred, where she relocated for care in early 2002.
Mrs. Cannon was born the eleventh of 12 children in rural Reed City, Mich. on Feb 8, 1919 to the late Phillip Kailing and Johanna (Costello) Kailing.
She graduated from Reed City High School and received a degree in rural Elementary Education from Kalamazoo College, now Western Michigan University. For six years she taught grade school in one-room school houses in Osceola County, MI.
During World War II, she was active in the USO through which she met her late husband of 57 years, Norman H. Cannon, then of Bridgeville. They settled in Greenwood after the war.
Mrs. Cannon was a dedicated family woman and tenacious advocate who worked in her church, school and family-related civic organizations. She delighted in seeing all children learn. She pursued interests in current events, public affairs, conservation and wildlife.
She was a pioneer parishioner of Our Lady of Lourde’s Catholic Church, Seaford. There she taught catechism for decades, including many confirmation classes and was a mentor to many adults in several lay ministries. She was the first female Eucharistic Minister in her parish and was a member/officer of Pastoral Council for many years. She was active with the Liturgy Committee, BVM Sodality, Ladies Guild Bridgeville, St. Anthony’s Resale Shop, Bible Study and Prayer groups. She loved sharing her faith through educational and social services in the Church and community.
Mrs Cannon was an honored lifetime member of the Delaware State PTA in which she held several offices for many years in Greenwood and Woodbridge PTA’s, Delaware State PTA, and State Executive Board. She was an active delegate to President Jimmy Carter’s White House Conference on Families and the subsequent Action Committee. She was a member of the Delaware Foster Care Review Board for several years.
She was a community captain for March of Dimes and American Cancer Society funds campaigns.
Mrs Cannon was preceded in death by her husband, Norman H Cannon, who died in November 2002; a son, Thomas E. Cannon; a grandson, Phillip A. Cannon III; and all her siblings.
She is survived by four sons and three daughters, Philip A. Cannon II, (and his wife Connie) Oak Lawn, IL; Ann M. Cannon, East Windsor, NJ; Mary E. Cannon, Bear; Patrick J. Cannon (and his wife Kathleen), Greenwood; Jeffrey A. Cannon, Greenwood; Nora Cannon Evans, Wilmington; and Kenneth K. Cannon (and his wife Pam), Harrington.
She is survived by seven grandchildren, Janelle Cannon, Jamie Cannon, Colbi Cannon, Katie Evans, Dawn Cannon, Carlea Cannon and Christine Evans; and three great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by two brothers-in-law, Kenneth Loomis, Cadillac Mich. and Virgil A. Cannon, Bridgeville; and one sister-in-law, Elnora Whiteley, Seaford.
Services were held at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Seaford, with burial in Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery , Millsboro.

Marian E. Snyder
Massachusetts native
Marian E. Snyder, 82, of Dover, died Monday, Dec. 6, 2004, surrounded by her family after a long illness.
Mrs. Snyder was born Feb. 22, 1922 in Springfield, Mass. She graduated from Springfield High School in 1940 and met her husband, Robert G. Snyder, at Westover Air Force Base in Massachusetts. They were married on Oct. 12, 1947 and the couple moved to Dover in 1955.
In addition to her beloved husband of 57 years, she is survived by her daughters, Linda Tease and her husband, Bruce, of Newark; Denise Holleger and her husband, Bayard, of Rehoboth Beach; Diane Wooding and her husband, Charles, of Hockessin; her grandchildren, Bree Tease of Newark, Kelly Holleger of Orlando, Fla. And Charles Wooding of Hockessin; two sisters, Stella Mondoux and Doris O’Connor; a brother, Robert Cormier of Springfield; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 10, at the Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 South Bradford Street in Dover where friends may call one hour earlier. Burial will be private.
Edward T. Davis
retired truck driver
Edward Thomas Davis, 81, of Millsboro, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004 in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Mr. Davis was born in Mappsville, Va., the son of the late George and Ola Davis. He was a truck driver for Bob Jennings Logging Co. in Milton and later retired from Townsends, Inc. in Millsboro. He also worked for the CHEER Center in Oak Orchard until his health failed.
Mr. Davis was a member of Dickerson Chapel AME Church in Millsboro where he sang in the male chorus for more than 50 years, served on the Usher Board, was a trustee and sang in the Chancel Choir.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by five brother and two sisters. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Catherine Hopkins Davis; a son, Douglas P. Hobbs of Millsboro; a daughter, Shirley M. Davis of of Millsboro; two goddaughters, Marie Dennis of Pocomoke City, Md. And Ola Grace Marshall of Horntown, Va.; eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, at Dickerson Chapel AME Church on Route 113 in Millsboro where friends may call one hour earlier. Burial will be in Old Field cemetery , Millsboro.

Daniel J. Brett
Vietnam veteran
Daniel Joseph Brett, 60, of Rehoboth Beach, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004 at home with two of his sisters and best friends.
He was born in Hackensack, N.J. and was a Jersey boy most of his life. He served in Vietnam from 1968-70 with the 173rd Airborne Brigade. Upon leaving the service he was a barber and then a pipe fitter.
He is survived by his mother, Josephine L. Brett Sr.; three sisters, Josephine L. Brett Jr., Edith H. Wort and Mary Y. Brett, all of Delaware; and a brother, Patrick M. Brett of New Jersey.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, Route 1 at Five Points. He will be buried at sea, departing from Fisherman’s Wharf in Lewes.

Robert S. Jones,
Verizon employee
Robert S. Jones III, 71, of Lewes, died Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2004, at his residence.
Mr. Jones was born Jan. 22, 1933 in Baltimore, Md., to the late Robert S. Jones, Jr. and Ida F. “Fritz” Jones.
Mr. Jones was employed by Verizon for 42 years as an engineering assistant. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of American Legion Post 28 and AMVETS Post 2.
He is survived by his wife Mary E. (Armsworthy) Jones; two daughters, Kathleen Law and Leslie Burgoyne; a son Stephen Jones; and three grandchildren, Courtney Law, Zachary Jones and Kyle Jones.
There will be a Memorial Service at 1 p.m., Friday, Dec. 10, at Lewes Presbyterian Church, 133 Kings Highway, Lewes, with the Rev. Harold Hughes officiating. Burial will be private.

Charles E. “Charley” Carter Jr. 48, of Los Angeles, Calif., died Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2004, at Kaiser Hospital in California.
Mr. Carter was born Aug. 2, 1956, in Lewes. He is survived by a brother, Wayne S. Sunkett of Kentucky; four sisters, Rowena D. Carter of Frederica, Selena M. Burris of Bridgeville, Margaret L. Carter and Vonceia B. Brazier, both of Georgetown; a brother-in-law, Herbert Burris of Bridgeville; a sister-in-law, Kim Sunkett of Kentucky; a host of aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Robert L. Carter.
A private memorial service will be held.
Stanley J. Mosiej,
decorated veteran
Stanley Joseph Mosiej, 91, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004.
Mr. Mosiej was a devoted American who proudly served his country iin the European Theatre, Southeast Asia, the South Pacific and the Mediterranean, retiring as Chief Warrant Officer 2 after 23 years of service.
Mr. Mosiej is surviverd by his loving wife of 69 years, Helen L. Mosiej; his devoted children, Stanley Mosiej Jr., Ronald B. Mosiej and Annette Mosiej; his grandson Christ Mosiej; and great-granddaughter, Katie Mosiej.

Robert J. Ellingsworth,

Robert J. Ellingsworth, 80, of Ellendale, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at home.
Mr. Ellingsworth was born in Ellendale the son of the late William D. and Anna Marker Ellingsworth. He was a custodian with the Milford School District for many years, retiring in 1986. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and served in World War II.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Margie Ellingsworth, and a granddaughter, Shari Marie Taylor.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marie Hitchens Ellingsworth; a daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Bud Clark of Milton; two sons, Bobbie Ellingsworth and Michael Ellingsworth, both of Ellendale; four grandchildren, Scott Taylor, Chris Taylor, Stacey Ellingsworth and Brittany Ellingsworth; two great-grandchildren, Cori Taylor and Jake Taylor; and a sister, Doris Carey of Millsboro.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 8, at Short Funeral Home, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, where friends may call one hour earlier. Burial will be in the Ellendale cemetery , Ellendale.
