Morris, Naomi Smith

Naomi Smith Morris, 100, passed away on Friday, September 17, 2010, in Lebanon, Pennsylvania.

Mrs. Morris was born on October 14, 1909, in Henderson, Caroline County, Maryland, to the late Isaac Newton Smith and Mary Ellen Melvin Smith.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, George E. Morris, Sr. in 1991, her daughter Emily "Jean" Morris Thompson in 2009, her older sister, Grace Smith Pritchett, and her brother, Isaac Melvin Smith.

She is survived by two sons, George E. Morris, Jr. and his wife "Molly" of Crescent City, Florida, and Robert S. Morris and his wife, Lee, of Columbia, South Carolina. Mrs. Morris is also survived by five grandchildren: Beth Morris and Pam Fuller, Matthew G. and Janet Morris, Donna (Wilkinson) and Larry Josefowski, Nicole (Morris) and Carl Dress, and Robert L. Morris. Surviving her are also seven great grandchildren: Kelly Fair, Kathryn and Allison Morris, Robert and Kaitlin Josefowski, Jacob and Eli Dress; as well as, one great-great grandchild, David Fair.

Mrs. Morris graduated from high school at the age of 16 and from Salisbury University two years later in 1928. She taught elementary school in Delaware and later moved to Maytown, PA with her husband.

Mrs. Morris led a very full and active life and had many interests including reading, crossword puzzles, theater, playing bridge and traveling, which included a visit to England. She resided at Cornwall Manor in Cornwall, PA, for over 23 years where she lived independently and had many friends. Last year she celebrated her 100th birthday with 50 friends and family members. She was recently interviewed by the Salisbury State University Alumni Association. The article was published in the spring edition this year. Mrs. Morris enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A graveside service for Naomi Smith Morris will be held at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Camden, Delaware on Thursday, September 23, 2010 at 11:00 a.m.

Prahl, Walter Deane

Walter Deane Prahl, age 64, of Camden died Friday morning September 17, 2010, at the Delaware Hospice Center.

Deane, as he was better known, was born in Dayton, Ohio on July 18, 1946; the son of Walter and Ketera Prahl.

He joined the Navy in 1965 and honorably served a tour of duty for just over four years. It was there that he found that he enjoyed a special kinship with the open water, an admiration for the sea, and had a great love of sailing; going so far as to eventually become a duly licensed captain. Deane also enjoyed woodworking and made his living as a carpenter for many years.

He is preceded in death by his son Nathaniel Deane Prahl.

Deane is survived by his daughter Shannon Elaine Abel, and five loving grandchildren; Jordan, Brett, Wyatt, Mae, and Bryce.

A service and celebration of Deane's life will take place at the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 West Camden-Wyoming Avenue, Wyoming, Delaware on Saturday, October 2 with a gathering for friends and family from 1 to 2 p.m. and service to follow promptly at 2 o'clock.

Jensen, Theresa Belle

Theresa Belle Jensen of Dover passed away Wednesday, September 15, 2010 in Courtland Manor Nursing Home. She was 85.

Theresa was born on August 1, 1925 in Lancaster, PA, daughter of the late Frank and Anna (McGuigan) Myhre.

She had worked as a paper hanger and also a designer/contractor. Theresa's many organizations included Patchwork Theatre Guild, Homemakers Club, Downs of DE (Tessy Bell), Meals on Wheels, DE State Police, Kent General Hospital, DAFB Hospital, Ag Museum, and Bombay Hook Refuge.

Her hobbies included painting, reading, sewing, needlework, travel and family genealogy.

Theresa is preceded in death by John C. Sinclair, father of her eight children in 1987, two brothers Frank Myhre and John Myhre.

She is survived by her devoted companion Bill Carpenter, daughter Arlene Stockwell and her husband Jim of New Castle, DE, daughter Carol Pippin and her husband John of Center Point, WV, daughter Kathleen Gardner and her husband Wilson of Clayton, DE, son John Sinclair and his wife Connie of Wyoming, DE, son Steven Sinclair and his wife Margie of Clayton, DE, daughter Marylee Ross of Fruitland, MD, son Michael Sinclair of Sandston, VA, and son Scott Sinclair and his wife Barbara of Glenn Allen, VA, 17 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and two great, great grandchildren, three sisters Joan Fehrle of Sea Isle City, NJ, Pat Myers of Estelle Manor, NJ and Ann Kester of Malvern, PA.

Services are private at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Vineland, NJ.

Arrangements are by Pippin Funeral Home, Wyoming.

Starke, Jamie D.

Jamie D. Starke of Dover passed away Monday, September 6, 2010 at Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 52.

He was born on February 25, 1958 in Cuba, son of the late Richard and Flora (Delano) Starke.

Jamie worked for Redners for the last two years as a meat cutter. Previously he had worked for Sam's Club, BJ's, Metro and Food Lion for over 20 years.

He enjoyed fishing, cooking, listening to music and was a civil war buff.

Jamie is also preceded in death by a brother Brant Starke.

He is survived by his companion of 10 years Carol Thompson, two brothers Todd Starke and his wife Carol of Camden, and Richard C. Starke, Jr. of Minnesota, a sister Carlene May of Arkansas, granddaughter Trinity Mosley of Cheswold and his best friends Ralph Palmer and Dickie Cornell.

Visitation will be 1-3 pm Saturday, September 11 at the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming. Immediately following the visitation, there will be a fellowship and refreshments at the residence.

Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the funeral home to help with expenses.

Downs, Sr., Joe Michael

Joe Michael Downs, Sr. of Camden-Wyoming passed away Sunday, September 5, 2010. He was 45.

He was born on September 22, 1964 in Penns Grove, NJ, son of the late Thomas and Theresa (MacDonald) Downs.

Joe was self employed, working in Heating and Air Conditioning, and had served on the HVAC state licensing board.

He enjoyed fishing, crabbing, motorcycling, boating and spending time with family and friends. He was a light hearted fellow who loved music, and loved to make people laugh.

Joe is survived by his wife of 24 years Tonya (Walters) Downs, three children Rena Downs, Theresa Downs and Joseph Downs, Jr. all of Camden-Wyoming, five brothers Thomas Downs and his wife Loretta of Pemberton, NJ, Billy "Taco" Downs and his wife Wanda of Magnolia,Bobby Downs and his wife Merrie of Mt. Holly, NJ, Michael Foreman and his wife Marina of Alabama and Johnny Foreman and his wife Kristy of Mississippi and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many, many, friends.

A memorial service will be 4 pm Thursday, September 9 at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, where friends may gather two hours earlier. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to help the family would be appreciated.

May, Dorothy E.

Dorothy E. "Dottie" May of Dover passed away Thursday, September 2, 2010 in her home. She was 85.

Dorothy was born on December 6, 1924 in Queens, New York, daughter of the late Irving and Minerva (Gottmann) Merkel.

When living in New York she had worked as a school bus operator for 20 years and was a license school bus instructor in the state of New York.

She was an active member of the Marydel Immaculate Conception Church, the Mamie Warren Senior Center, Harvest Years Senior Center and the Modern Maturity Center. She loved to volunteer with the Golden Eagle Shop. She was a charter member of the Dover Modern Maturity Center Mummers and Line Dance Instructor. She was a charter member of the Dover Columbiettes #4182.

She was preceded in death by her husband Louis May, a brother Stanley Merkel.

She is survived by her children Allen May of Dover, Nancy Wood and her husband Peter of Philadelphia, Warren May and his wife Valerie of Germantown, MD, grandchildren Hattie Conaughty and her husband Joseph, Henry May, Audrey May and Olivia May, and a great grandchild Zoey Matheny.

Visitation will be 7-9 pm Monday at the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 am Tuesday, September 7 at the Immaculate Conception Church, Main Street, Marydel, Maryland. Burial will follow in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Dover Columbiettes Council #4182, c/o Immaculate Conception Church, P. O. Box 399., Marydel, MD 21649.
