LEON I. JOHNSON

DELAWARE CITY Leon I. Johnson of Governor Bacon Health Center, passed away August 31, 2010. He was 79.

Leon had worked for the State of Delaware for 31 years.

He is preceded in death by two wives.

He is survived by his wife of 10 years Lucille Johnson and six stepchildren.

A graveside service will be held 10 am Monday, September 13 at Bishopville Cemetery, Bishopville, Maryland.

Vella, Lorna May

Lorna May Vella of Dover passed away Tuesday, August 31, 2010 in her home surrounded by her loving family. She was 84.

Lorna was born on February 27, 1926 in Westfield, NJ, daughter of the late Thomas and Laura (Kingsland) Dawson.

She retired after 32 years where she worked as a certified nursing assistant for Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield, New Jersey.

Lorna is preceded in death by her husband Americo "Pump" Vella in 2009.

She is survived by two sons Thomas Vella and his wife Gail, and Danny Vella, grandchildren Tim Vella, Tory Vella, Michelle Vella, Lisa Simpkins, Christine Goodell and Richard Parello and great grandchildren Shane Simpkins, Kelsey Simpkins, Teddy Malone, Tiffany Goodell, Tabitha McDonald and a great great granddaughter Mya McDonald.

Burial and services are private in New Jersey.

Cheatham, Angela B.

Angela B. Cheatham of Viola passed away Monday, August 30, 2010 at Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 45.

She was born May 25, 1965 in Michigan.

Angela graduated from Caesar Rodney High School, Class of 1984 and a graduate of Gannon University with a Bachelors degree. She had worked for the State of Delaware for 20 years for the Solid Waste Authority.

Angela is preceded in death by her mother Mollie Cheatham in 1991.

She is survived by her father William T. Cheatham, Sr., a sister Pamela F. Cheatham of Columbia, SC, brother William T. Cheatham, Jr. and his wife Dorothy of Dover and two close and very dear friends Wendy Reed of Purgitsville, WV and Vonda Fox of Viola and an extended family of friends.

Visitation will be 6-8 pm Thursday, September 2, at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, Delaware.

Service will be 11 am Friday, September 3 at the funeral home.

Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to Dover Christian Church Building Fund, c/o Deacon William Jenkins, 112 Vining Run, Camden, DE 19934.

Hinkle, Mary S.

Mary S. Hinkle, age 65, of Dover, died Monday morning August 30, 2010, in her home.

She was born January 9, 1945 in Montclair, NJ daughter of the late Robert and Ruth Sanderson.

Mary was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She was a 1963 graduate of Caesar Rodney High School. She was a talented hairdresser for many years before making the sacrifice to be a stay at home mom. Once her children were out of elementary school she began a successful custom drapery business. Mary had been very active in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program and loved having a "little sister". Mary enjoyed gardening, sewing, crafting, reading, and spending time with family, friends, and her cats.

She is survived by her husband of 42 years, L. Keith Hinkle; daughter, Betsy Gant and her husband Keith; son Tom Hinkle and his wife Leighann; step-daughter Anne Spinks and her husband Terry; and four grandchildren, Erica Gant, Brody Hinkle, Erin Spinks, and Lane spinks, brother Robert Sanderson and his wife Cindy; nephew Sean Sanderson and his wife Lisa; nephew Matt Sanderson and his wife Jen, Uncle Bob Kirkpatrick and cousin Karen Williamson. Anyone who knew Mary knows how important her friends were. It must be noted that she is survived by her lifelong friends; Maureen Wootteen, Jeanette Lighthall, and Linda Rosco.

A service of celebration and remembrance of Mary's life will be held 11 am, Saturday, September 4, at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, where friends may gather one hour earlier.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made to the MS Society, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Delaware Chapter, Two Mill Road, Suite 106, Wilmington, DE 19806.

Omans, M.D., Walter B.

Dr. Walter B. Omans, Felton resident and longtime pediatrician, passed away August 28, 2010 in the Delaware Veteran's Home in Milford, Delaware. He was 83 years old.

Dr. Omans was born on February 13, 1927 in Bay City, Michigan. He graduated from Bay City Central High School, and served in the United States Navy Medical Corps during World War II. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Tufts University in 1950, and his Doctorate of Medicine from Tufts University School of Medicine in 1954.

After medical school, he did a rotating internship at Philadelphia General Hospital, followed by a pediatric residency and allergy fellowship at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children (Temple University) in Philadelphia. He served as Chief of Pediatrics and Assistant Chief of Premature Nurseries at Philadelphia General Hospital, and Associate in Pediatrics at Jefferson Medical College.

In 1967, he moved to Delaware to join fellow residents Dr. John Forest and Dr. William Leitzinger in private practice. In 1978, after the retirement of Drs. Forest and Leitzinger, he joined the Dickinson Medical Group in Milford. He served as Chief of Pediatrics at Kent General Hospital from 1972 to 1979. He was the Attending Allergist at Dover Air Force Base from 1974 to 1980. In 1982 he opened his own private practice with offices in Dover and Milford, where he continued to practice until he retired in 2002, due to Parkinson's Disease. Dr. Omans had a never-ending dedication to his patients, an amazing ability to relate to children, and a calm, reassuring way with parents. He was the pediatrician to generations of families in and around the Dover and Milford areas during his many years of practice.

He was a member of the American Academy of Pediatrics; Philadelphia Pediatric Society; Delaware Allergy Society; American College of Allergy and Immunology; American Medical Association; and the Medical Society of Delaware, which presented him with an award in recognition of 50 years of service.

While living in Camden, Delaware, Dr. Omans served as a member of the Camden Town Council and was instrumental in the beautification project of Camden, planting cherry trees throughout the historic town. He was a member of Whatcoat United Methodist church in Camden, where he sang in the choir for many years.

Dr. Omans loved to reminisce with stories from his past. He had a true passion for sailing, and loved to sail the Chesapeake Bay. He was an impressive history buff in many areas; in particular, religion, lighthouses and the Civil War. He was an avid reader, and enjoyed canoeing and nature walks. He enjoyed building ship models in his spare time.

He was preceded in death by his parents Glenn and Margaret Omans, and his brother Allen Omans.

Dr. Omans is survived by his wife of 36 years, Dolores ("Dee") Omans of Felton; seven children; Abigail Omans of Virginia, Adrienne Omans, Amanda Omans of Dover, Glenn Omans, II and his wife Nancy of Virginia, Deborah Costa of Arizona, Janice Malmberg and her husband Peter of Dover; and W. Ben Omans and his wife Cheryl of Camden.

He is also survived by a sister Judy and her husband Peter of Michigan; ten grandchildren; three nephews and five nieces.

Friends may visit with the family from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 7, 2010 at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Avenue, Wyoming. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bayhealth Medical Center, Pediatric Unit, 640 S. State St., Dover, DE 19901 in memory of Walter B. Omans, M.D. or to March of Dimes Pregnancy, Delaware Chapter or Parkinsons Disease Foundation.

Baynard, Alice Quailes

Alice Louise Quails Baynard was born on April 23, 1942, to the late Ernest Quails and Anna Collins. On August 24, 2010 she departed her life to rest in peace with our Heavenly Father. Alice was born in Seaford, Delaware. She graduated from Conrad High School in Wilmington, Delaware. Alice married William Baynard on July 14, 1966. Alice worked for Milford Center Genesis Elder Care in dietary for 10 years. She is survived by her husband William Baynard, daughters Constance E. Ramos of Wilmington, Delaware, Debbie D. Fletcher of Dover, Delaware, Johnette Cornish of Cambridge, Maryland, Thelma Baynard of Felton, Delaware, three sons Charles M. Fletcher of Hurlock, Maryland, Timothy L. Fletcher of Wilmington, Delaware, Stanley Maloney III, four sisters Goldie Mae Tyler of Federalsburg, Maryland, Martha Kellum of Hurlock, Maryland, Shirley Robinson of Wilmington, Delaware, JoAnne Green of Frederica, Delaware, seven sisters-in-law Mary Ellen Williams, Marie Chance, Barbara Malloery, Myrtle Watkins, Dolly Barry, Carmelia Barry, Diane Potts, five brothers-in-law, Tommie Green, Bruce Malloery, Robert Baynard, David Watkins, Barry Potts and 17 grandchildren, 42 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Caple, Beatrice I.

Beatrice I. Caple of Dover passed away Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at home. She was 91.

Beatrice was born on November 1, 1918 in Marshfield, Wisconsin, daughter of the late John and Rose Fahey.

She worked as a bookkeeper for Ray Book until 1990.

Beatrice enjoyed sewing, baking and playing bingo.

She is preceded in death by her husband Lt. Col. Ralph Caple and a daughter Jacqueline B. Nuss.

Beatrice is survived by two sons Rev. Ronald G. Caple his wife Patricia of Columbia, NC and Paul Caple and his fiance Amy M. Wells both of Kenton, eight grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and one great great grandchild.

Service will be 11 am Sunday, August 29 at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, where friends may gather one hour earlier. Burial will follow in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital Memorial Program, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105.
