Samuel “Pop Pop” “Uncle Sam” Hudson, 74, of Millsboro, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, in his home.
Mr. Hudson was born in Millsboro, the son of the late Harley and Edna Lowe Hudson.
He was employed by Mohawk Electrical Systems in Milford, retiring in 1996 after 34 years of service.
He enjoyed attending athletic events that his grandchildren were involved in.
Mr. Hudson was a member of Hickory Hill United Methodist Church near Millsboro.
He was preceded in death by brothers.
He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Ann Spicer Hudson; two daughters, Karen Sue Bastianelli and her husband Steve of Bear, Stephanie Hughes and her husband R.L. of Millsboro; a brother, Paul Hudson of Millsboro; two sisters, Ruth Ayres of Lewes and Lois White of Millsboro; and four grandchildren, Tyler Samuel Bastianelli, Megan Bastianelli, Julie Hughes and Katie Hughes.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 25, at Watson Funeral Home, Millsboro, with burial in Millsboro cemetery.

Charles M. Callanan Jr.
kitchen designer
Charles M. Callanan Jr., 59, of New Castle, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at home.
Mr. Callanan attended parochial school and graduated from Loyola High School. He received his degree from Frostburg State University in Maryland, and served his country as a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. A gifted kitchen designer, Church was the head of the Kitchen Design Department at Lowe’s in Middletown, where he had been employed for 11 years. Last year he was named Lowe’s Million Dollar Man. Previously, he had been the manager of the Stone Balloon in Newark, and the co-owner of the former Malt Shoppe, both of Main Street. He was a member of Holy Spirit Parish in New Castle.
He was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Alice May Garneski.
He is survived by his loving wife, best friend and soul-mate, Stella M. Callanan; his stepdaughter, Bianca Martin of New Castle; most cherished and beloved grandson, Zachary “Zachman” of New Castle; his parents, Elizabeth (Dalton) and Charles M. Callanan Sr. of St. Augustine, Fla.; brother, David Callanan Sr. of Baltimore, Md.; a sister, Kathy Sharpless of Chapel Hill, N.C.; father-in-law, Francis X. Garneski Sr. of Long Neck; nephews, David and Christopher Callanan, Ched, Christopher Jr. and Darren Sharpless; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Threase, Sarah, Linda, Francis X. Jr. and his wife Karen, and Phillip; and many extended family members and loving and caring friends.
A mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11:30 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 25, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 12 Winder Road, Garfield Park, New Castle, where friends may call after 10:30 a.m. Burial will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery , 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.

James Edgar Broyles,
New Castle resident
James Edgar Broyles, 49, of New Castle, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004.
Born in Seaford, on July 8, 1955, James was the son of late Edgar Lee and Thelma Wheatley Broyles.
He is survived by two sons, Brian S. Broyles and his wife Erica of New Castle; and Dustin O. Broyles of Chestertown, Md.; two sisters, Debbie Broyles of Milton and Chris Austin of Milford; and a niece, Amy Culver of Lewes.
A memorial service was held at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, Wilmington Manor, New Castle.
The Rev. Frank L. Moon,
retired pastor
The Rev. Frank L. Moon, 89, of Lewes, died at the home of his daughter on Friday, Aug. 21, 2004.
Fr. Moon was the retired pastor of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Lewes.
He was born in Shawnee, Okla. and graduated from the University of Oklahoma, Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, Va., ordained in the priesthood at the Washington National Cathedral in 1950, and served several churches in Maryland prior to coming to St. Peter’s in 1952. He served the Lewes community until his retirement in 1982.
During World War II, Fr. Moon served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific as a flight deck officer on an aircraft carrier. During his active years in Lewes, he served as a substitute teacher at Lewes Special School, helped organize the Lewes Aid Society and was always helping people in need and encouraged and inspired many teenagers to become active in the church.
Fr. Moon was very active in the Masonic Lodge and was past Grand Chaplain of the Delaware Grand Lodge and active in the Lewes Lions Club, past chaplain of the Lewes Fire Department, a volunteer for the Lewes Public Library and Meals on Wheels. He enjoyed photography, working on cars, art, dancing, smoking his pipe, woodworking, morning walks on Savannah Road in Lewes and was an avid music lover. His contribution to the Lewes community will be remembered in the hearts of Lewes residents for years to come.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, in 1998.
He is survived by a son, Richard P. Moon and his wife, Jane; and a daughter, Katherine M. Hughes, with whom he lived; two grandchildren, Amy Moon Hughes and Anna Piccolo.
A memorial service will beheld at 3 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 25, at All Saints’ Episcopal Church, 18 Olive Avenue, Rehoboth Beach, with burial private.

Walter W. Hood,
retired tool and die maker
Walter W. Hood, 77, of Long Neck, and formerly of Chester, Pa., died Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, at home.
Mr. Hood was a retired tool and die maker and machinist employed by Union Carbide Co. in Chester. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a member of the Community Church of Oak Orchard and American Legion Post 28 in Oak Orchard and the Indian River Senior Center.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Patricia.
He is survived by his wife, Josephine; a son, Barry M. Hood and his wife Kelly; three daughters, Christine L. Hood, Marguerite G. Conaway and her husband Michael and Barbara J. Spangler and her husband Sam; and five grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 25, at Oak Orchard Community Church. Friends may call from 9 to 10 a.m., at the Long Neck chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck Road. Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery

Ruth “Little Sister” Deshields,
retired from Allen’s Poultry
Ruth “Little Sister” Deshields, 62, of Ellendale, died Friday, Aug. 13, 2004, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford.
Mrs. Deshields was born Dec. 4, 1941 in Benevolence, Ga.
She was a retired factory worker from Allen’s Poultry Plant. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Lewes.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Tommy Evans, Alton Evans and Isaac Grier; and a great-granddaughter, Corinda Perkins.
She is survived by three daughters, Lisa Evans and Ruby Evans, both of Ellendale and Brenda Mason and her husband Darryl of Lincoln; a grandson whom she raised, Tyke Evans of Ellendale; a goddaughter, Shawn Reddix of Atlanta, Ga.; eight sisters, Mary Alice Lewis, Martha Evans and Annie White, all of Lumpkin, Ga., Trudy Lott of Weston, Ga., Pinkie Robinson and her husband Moses of Cuthbert, Ga., Dorothy Jackson and her husband William of Penn Hills, Pa. and Selma Marie Hones and Mary Jennings of Chicago; two brothers, Welton Evans and his wife Jannie of Milton and Felton Evans of Lumpkin; a special aunt, Annie Lee Jackson of Lumpkin; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Services were held in Friendship Baptist Church, Lewes, with burial in Friendship Baptist Church cemetery , Lewes.
Donald Holcomb,
Highland Farms founder
Donald Holcomb, 88, a longtime Ardenite, died Saturday, Aug. 14, 2004, surrounded by family and friends.
Mr. Holcomb was born Jan. 20, 1916 in Vineland, N.J., and moved to Arden three years later with his parents, Maude and Rob Holcomb, a brother and three sisters. Along with his wife Ruth, he founded Highland Farms Riding School near Arden in 1958. For 25 years, thousands of children, adults and handicapped riders experienced the joy of horseback riding and the opportunity to work with horses.
Don lived for 85 years in Arden, participating in town activities throughout his life. He had a love of theater that began at age 3 while performing in his first Shakespeare production in Arden. He performed in summer stock at the Robin Hood Theater and was active in the Wilmington Drama League. Most recently, he appeared with the Arden Singers in the “Pirates of Penzance.” At age 86, he reprised the role of “cabin boy” he originally played at age six.
A modern day Don Quixote, he will always be remembered whistling and singing as he walked through life. A person with remarkable energy, he served in the Army Air Force, worked at Sears, operated Highland Stables, built houses and furniture, wrote stories, golfed and donated endless hours to family and friends in the village of Arden.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, who died in 1988.
He is survived by his three children, Lynne McKay of Dewey Beach, Maria Burslem of Arden and Don Holcomb Jr. of Wilmington; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; loving son and daughters-in-law; and incredible friends.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, Sept. 6, in the Arden Gild Hall, 2126 The Highway, Arden.

Robert Earle Campbell,
retired draftsman
Robert Earle Campbell, 80, of Rehoboth Beach, died Wednesday, Aug. 18, 2004, at his residence.
Born in Elkins, W.Va., Mr. Campbell was the son of the late Edward Thompson Campbell and Louida (Marsteller) Campbell.
Mr. Campbell was a building design draftsman by trade and had worked in various positions for Montgomery County, Md. for 25 years. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of VFW Post 6483, Milford, and was an avid Washington Redskins fan.
He is survived by his wife Mara Marie (Serretti) Campbell; a son, Gene Campbell of Rehoboth Beach; and two sisters, Helen Armentrout of Elkins, W.Va. and Anita Phillips of Cumberland, Md.
Services were held at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Lewes, with burial in Henlopen Memorial Park near Milton.

Orin F. Burdette Jr.,
Navy veteran
Orin F. “Jim” Burdette Jr., 72, of Harbeson and formerly of Gaithersburg, Md., departed this life Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at his late residence.
He was born July 27, 1932, son of the late Orin Foster Burdette Sr. and Margaret Redmon Burdette, in Dickerson, Md.
He is survived by his wife Rosemary (Watkins) Burdette, daughters Kay, Jill, Lori, Teri, Jacki, and Karen; and their children Jessica, Jamie, Sara, William, Kevin and Jake; special stepdaughter Brenda and her children Dustin and Amanda; and five brothers and sisters.
Mr. Burdette had been employed in civil service as a rural letter carrier in the Gaithersburg area for 34 years, retiring in 1987.
He had also been a barber for more than 45 years in the Maryland and Delaware areas. He was a devoted member of Lions Clubs for more than 40 years, aspiring through the various officers’ positions to a regional position while in Maryland.
During his time with Lions Clubs, he was involved in the start of many and various programs including the beginning of the Midway Lions Club in 1999.
Mr. Burdette served in the US. Navy during the Korean Conflict.
He was also very active in the Democratic Party and most recently as chairman of the 14th District.
Funeral services will be at 7 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 21, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 1449 Kings Highway, Lewes, where friends may call after 5 p.m. Pastor David Munro will officiate at the services.
Entombment will be at Mt. Olivet cemetery
in Frederick, Md., at 1 p.m., Monday Aug. 23.

Desiree Gill,
enjoyed writing poetry
Desiree Alexandria June Gill, 13, of Milton, died Sunday, Aug. 15, 2004, at Milton E. Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, Pa.
Desi would have been an eighth grader at Mariner Middle School in Milton, where she was a member of the chorus. She enjoyed reading, singing, writing poetry and was very family-oriented.
She is survived by her mother and father, Kimberly Ann (Gill) Cruz and Richard Cruz of Milton; her father and stepmother, Raymond Pendelton and Stacy Geiger of Harrisburg, Pa.; a sister, Janice Cruz of Milton; her maternal grandparents, Robert and Phyllis Gill of Milton; her paternal grandmother, Linda Torres of Aurora, Colo.; her paternal great-grandparents, Robert and Alma Pendelton of Harrisburg, Pa.; her paternal great-grandfather, Raymond Premici of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; and an aunt, Anna Gonzalez of Harrisburg. She will also be missed by several aunts, uncles and friends.
Services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 22 at Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal Street, Milton, where friends may call after noon. Interment will be in Goshen United Methodist Church cemetery , Milton.
