Jeffrey Shawn Welch

Jeffrey Shawn Welch, 56 of Wilmington, DE, died July 18, 2009, at the Heartland Hospice House surrounded by his family.

Born in Columbus, Ohio, he was a 1971 graduate of Archmere Academy and received his Bachelors degree in Business Administration from the University of Delaware. He earned his juris doctorate from Widener University School of Law in 1978. He clerked for the Delaware Court of Chancery and served as a Deputy Attorney General in the criminal division. Jeffrey spent twenty-two years in private practice, including being the founding member and managing partner of Welch and Associates. He specialized in banking and bankruptcy law, representing many of Delaware's financial institutions. He often lectured on bankruptcy. Even with his busy schedule he always found time to provide pro bono services for those in need. Jeffrey was an avid Phillies fan, an accomplished left handed pitcher and coached Ursuline Academy's softball team during the time his daughter attended.

Jeffrey is survived by his daughter, Stephanie and son-in-law, Alex Silverman. He is also survived by his father Charles E. Welch, twin brother The Honorable John K. Welch and siblings Edward P. Welch, Patricia W. Dunn, and Marybeth Welch. He was preceded in death by his mother, Charma Lee Welch and sister Charmie Welch.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 22, at 10:30 am, at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on Weldon Road. Friends may call at the church from 9:30-10:30 am. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Father Martin's Ashley, 800 Tydings Lane, Havre de Grace, MD. 21078-2102.

Capt. William "Bill"

Aikens

Age 68, passed away peacefully on Monday morning, August 3, 2009, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, DE, after fighting cancer for two years. His family and dear friends surrounded Bill during this difficult time.

Bill was the son of the late Leta M. Friday and William R. Aikens. He was born in Cory, PA, and moved to Lewes at a very young age. He graduated from Lewes High School in 1961. After high school, Bill married his high school sweetheart Joanne Maull, daughter of Baily and Betty Maull also of Lewes. Joanne was a loving and devoted wife until the very end. Bill was the loving father of Capt. Michael Aikens, Capt. William P. Aikens, Jr. and Virginia "Ginger" Aikens, all of Lewes. He was also the proud grandfather of Megan Aikens, Nicole Aikens, and William P. Aikens, III. Bill worked at Barcroft for ten years and retired early to pursue his passion for sport fishing. After obtaining his captain's license, he owned and operated a successful charter business for 30 plus years. After charter fishing, he started running private sport-fishing yachts throughout the Bahamas, Caribbean, and South and Central America. Bill mentored countless young fishermen and introduced them to the profession that he dearly loved. His family will continue to carry on his legacy through sport fishing for years to come. Bill will be missed, but never forgotten.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 6, at 7 pm, at the chapel of MELSON FUNERAL SERVICES, 32013 Long Neck Road in Long Neck. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Bill's memory to, Tunnell Cancer Center, 424 Savannah Rd, Lewes, DE. 19958.

Waltraut Alberer "Wally"

Mrs. Waltraut "Wally" Alberer, age 84, of Newark, DE, died on Sunday, August 2, 2009, at Christiana Hospital.

Born in Bad Lippspringe, Germany, on August 20, 1924, daughter of the late Otto F. Burkhardt and Sophie Jasper Burkhardt, Wally moved with her family to the United States in 1954. She was a talented homemaker throughout her life and used her considerable gifts as a cook to establish Wally's Catering, which she operated for many years in the New Castle County area. A leader in the German community, Wally was an honorary member of the Delaware Saengerbund and Library Association and was an active member since 1968. She was a charter member of the Ladies of the Delaware Saengerbund, was instrumental in the success of all kitchen projects, including over 30 years of Oktoberfest celebrations, and had helped organize the annual Christmas Bazaar since its inception in 1967. Wally was also active in her community as a fund raiser and block captain for the American Heart Association for many years. A talented artist, Wally greatly enjoyed a variety of arts and crafts projects.

Her beloved husband of 57 years, Frank "Franz" Alberer, died in 2002. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Dagmar Alberer. She is survived by her children, Fred Alberer and wife, Fremah, of New Castle, DE; and Diana Levering and husband, John, of Newark, DE, with whom she lived; grandchildren, Lori Randolph and companion, Ty, of Wilmington, DE; Brian Alberer of Smyrna, DE; and Emma Levering of Newark, DE; great grandson, Shane Alberer; and foster daughter, Denise Keating of Maiden, NC. The longest living member of her immediate family, Wally is also survived by many extended family members and good friends in the Saengerbund and beyond.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Christiana ER, the nurses on the 6th floor of Christiana Hospital, Drs. Glassner and Leidig (whom Wally loved and trusted immensely), and, most of all, to close friend, Stephanie Bobik, whose care and love gave much-needed support to the entire family during this time of sorrow.

A gathering to celebrate Wally's life will be held at 3 pm, on Thursday, August 6, at the Delaware Saengerbund & Library Association, 49 Salem Church Road, Newark, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 1501 Casho Mill Rd., Ste. 1, Newark, DE 19711; or to Mill Creek Fire Company, 3900 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19808.

Gerald J. C. Bailey

Of Hartly, DE, age 75, died August 1, 2009, from comp.lications suffered in an automobile accident. Services, 8 pm, Friday, August 7, in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main St., Smyrna, DE. Visitation 6-8 pm.

CM/Sgt.(Ret.) Clarence W. (Larry) Beebe

Of Dover, DE, died July 12, 2009. A memorial service will be held, 4 pm, Saturday, August 8, at First Presbyterian Church of Dover.

Paul S. Capicciotti

Paul S. Capicciotti, 88, of Wilmington, DE passed away on Saturday, August 15, 2009.

Mr. Capicciotti was born in Wilmington on June 21, 1921, the son of the late Carl and Susie Capicciotti. Paul proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the South Pacific. After his military service, he worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad, retiring in the late 1980s. Paul enjoyed fishing and watching golf. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Joseph and James, his sister, Rose Elwood and his son-in-law, John K. Leverage, Sr.

Paul will be missed by his loving wife of 66 years. Marie Casapulla Capicciotti; his daughters, Patricia Capicciotti of Wilmington and Rose Leverage of New Castle; his grandchildren, Charles "Ebbie" Alfree, III of New Castle and Cynthia Stocktill and her husband, Kenneth of Elkton, MD; his great-grandson, Anthony Davis of Elkton and his sister, Mary Flora of Newark.

Funeral services will be held at 12 noon on Thursday at the MEALEY FUNERAL HOME, Limestone and Milltown Roads, where friends may call after 11 am. Burial will be in All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Road, Wilmington, DE 19810.

Minnie M. Cubbage

Age 70, of Frederica died August 13, 2009 at John Hopkins Hospital. Funeral services, 12 noon Wednesday August 19, at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rt.10), Dover. Friends may call 1 hour prior.

Bernard Noble Harris "Barney"

Bernard Noble Harris of Willow Valley, PA, formerly of Landenberg, PA passed away on Wednesday 12 August 2009 at the Lancaster General Hospital following a brief illness.

Mr. Harris was born 19 January 1917 in Rapid River, MI, the son of the late Arthur and Hosannah Leveque Harris. Growing up, Mr. Harris worked in a logging camp run by his family and attended a one room school house. Mr. Harris was the first member of his family to graduate college, obtaining a Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering from the Michigan College of Mining and Technology, now Michigan Technological University, in 1938. He also attended graduate school at the University of Michigan. Mr. Harris was employed with the DuPont Company for 42 years, during which time he worked in a variety of positions, including assignments in Antioch, CA and New Dehli, India. His last assignment before retiring involved working with automotive fuel additives, specifically anti-knock compounds. He was admired by his co-workers for his knowledge and analytical thinking. After retirement, Mr. Harris enjoyed working in the woods at a small piece of property he owned, where he cut and sold firewood. In later years he enjoyed traveling, particularly on ocean cruises and trips to the Outer Banks of North Carolina.

Mr. Harris is survived by his wife of 68 years, the former Elva T. Crossland, also of Willow Valley; and his son Timothy and his wife Irene, of Newark, DE.

The family would like to thank the staff of Willow Valley Manor, especially the Glen, for the care and compassion extended to Mr. Harris during his stay at there.

No memorial services are planned and interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to a charity of the donor's choice.

Marguerite "Marge" Iacono, Retired RN

Marguerite Eldine "Marge" (nee Quebedeaux) Iacono, 84, of Wilmington, a retired RN from Crozer Chester Medical Center passed away on Sunday, August 16, 2009 at Shipley Manor, Wilmington.

Born in Church Point, LA, she resided in Ridley Park, PA for many years before retiring to Millsboro, DE. She later moved to North Wilmington to live with her son, and most recently lived at Shipley Manor. She enjoyed her family, cooking, traveling, reading, gardening, sewing, craft making, dominoes, and especially bowling.

She was predeceased by her late husband, Frank Eugene Iacono in 1983, and her dear friend, Joseph C. Walsh in 2001. She is survived by her sons, Gregory Iacono and his wife Mary Ann of North Wilmington, Mark Iacono of Charlotte, N.C., and Steven Iacono of Coatesville, PA; daughter, Lela DiPietro of Birdsboro, PA; one grandson, Gregory Beard of PA; one sister, Vina Demarest of Louisiana; and many nieces and nephews.

She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church. She expressed her faith that she trusted in The Lord Jesus Christ for the salvation of her soul. The funeral service and interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in her memory to Crozer-Chester Foundation, One Medical Center Blvd., Upland, PA 19013-3995.
