George W. Cleaver,
former councilman
George Walter Cleaver, 78, of Lewes, died Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at his residence.
Mr. Cleaver was a member of Jefferson Masonic Lodge, Lewes, and the Masonic Lodge in Towson, Md. While working at Chestnut Ridge Golf Club in Baltimore County, he enjoyed serving as president of the National Golf Course Association in 1978. Mr. Cleaver loved his retirement years living in Lewes and had been an elected member of the Lewes City Council in the mid ‘90s. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife Suzanne; children Mark and Amy and daughter-in-Law Debbie. He will also be greatly missed by his grandchildren, Eric, Tyler and little Phoebe, who knew him as “Teddy-Bop”. He is also survived by a brother, John McCorkle of Lewes; and a sister, Mary Brannen of Newark
Memorial services will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Second and Market streets, Lewes, Saturday, Jan. 22, at 2 p.m. A private family burial will be held Tuesday, Jan. 25, in Wilmington.

William Stromberg Sr.,
retired foreman
William A. Stromberg Sr. age 78 of Lewes, passed away Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
Mr. Stromberg was born in 1926 in Washington, D.C. to the late Rudolph and Anne (Ladane) Stromberg. He was a Navy Veteran, having served at Pearl Harbor on the USS Houston. He retired from the National Elevator Constructors Union in 1983 having served as foreman on many Washington government buildings and the D.C. metro.
Mr. Stromberg is survived by his wife, Patricia; sons, George and William Jr.; daughter, Debbie; seven grandchildren, Christina, Stephanie, Eric, Jeffrey, Caitlin and Dawn; and one great grandson, Justin. He is also survived by four stepchildren; and seven step-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held Saturday Jan. 29, at 2 p.m., at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes. where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Craig C. Hibberd,

Craig C. Hibberd, 20, of North East, Md., died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, of injuries sustained in an auto accident.
Mr. Hibberd was born March 3, 1984, in Elkton, Md., the son of Stephen Hibberd and the late Linda Winters Hibberd of North East, Md.
Craig was a lifelong resident of Cecil County. He enjoyed cars, motorcycles, guns and shooting. He was a licensed pilot before the age of 16. He was employed by Wal-Mart.
In addition to his father, he is survived by his sisters, Rachel Lewis of Elkton, Md., and Stephanie Miller of Lewes; his brother, Derek Hibberd of North East, Md,; his maternal grandfather, Walter Winters, North East, Md.; his paternal grandfather, John Hibberd of Sefner, Fla.
Services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 18, at Crouch Funeral Home, 127 South Main Street, North East, Md., where friends may call from 1 to 2 p.m. Interment will be in North East Methodist cemetery , North East, Md.
Dorothy “Lynda” Moore,
classic car enthusiast
Dorothy B. “Lynda” Moore, 55, of Georgetown, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford, after a 14-year battle with cancer. She had been a two-time survivor of cancer, but was unable to survive the third battle, which lasted a week.
Mrs. Moore was born in Greenlane, Pa., the daughter of the late Paul T. and Eleanor Marie Snyder Bernhart. She had worked in the cafeteria of Sussex Central High School in Georgetown for 13 years. She was a lifetime member of the National Street Rod Association and former member of the Del-Rods Car Club of Dover. She was a classic car enthusiast and enjoyed attending shows with her husband.
Her hobbies included collecting dolls, snowmen décor and country apples for her kitchen.
She was especially fond of her cats.
She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Paul J. Moore; two sisters, Ethel Marie Foskey of Ellendale and Jo Ann Foskey and her husband Preston of Georgetown; a brother, Leroy Bernhart and his wife Katherine of Perkeominville, Pa.; six nephews and a niece.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 19, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market Street, Georgetown, where friends may call Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. Burial will be in Millsboro cemetery , Millsboro.

William C. Grimes Sr.,

William C. Grimes Sr., 87, of Wilmington, died Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at the Brandywine Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Wilmington.
Mr. Grimes was employed with Allied Chemical in Claymont, retiring after 30 years of service as a forklift operator.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Gertrude Woodward Grimes.
He is survived by a son, William Grimes Jr. of Wilmington; three daughters, Barbara L. Woerner and her husband Francis of Bear, Bonnie J. Anderson and her husband Harry Jr. of Wilmington and Betty Jane Heffelfinger and her husband Lewis of Albuquerque, N.M.; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four sisters, Marion Hanson of Wilmington, Thelma Matzuras of and Eleanor Creshine of Millsboro and Doris Oliver of Rehoboth Beach.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 18, at Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, where friends and relatives may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Interment will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park.
Virginia L. Polite,

Virginia L. Polite, 74, of Lewes, died Friday, Jan. 14, 2005, at Lewes Convalescent Center.
Mrs. Polite was born Dec. 28, 1930, in West Virginia, the daughter of the late Jake and Elizabeth Martin. She was a waitress for Pizza Villa and the Dinner Bell Inn.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Polite Jr. in 1985.
She is survived by two sons, Edgar A. Polite and Robin D. Polite; two brothers, John Martin and Bill Martin; a sister, Ora Henson; and three grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 18, at the Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck Road, Long Neck, where friends may call after noon. Burial will be in Henlopen Memorial Park near Milton.

John Matthew Camper,

John Matthew Camper, 79, of Millsboro, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, of natural causes in Green Valley Terrace, Millsboro.
Mr. Camper was born June 20, 1926, in Camden, N.J., son of the late John Sr. and Mary Ingram Camper. He was raised and resided most of his adult life in Camden and relocated in 1988 to Millsboro with his late wife, Dollie Butler.
He served honorably in the U.S. Navy as a coxswain from 1944 to 1946, earning the Victory Medal, the American Theatre Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Medal.
He was employed as a forklift operator for Campbell Soup Co. in Camden for more than 30 years.
He was a member of Dickerson Chapel AME Church, VFW in Millsboro, John H. Porter chapter of the Tuskeegee Airmen and Homestead Youth Association of Merchantville, N.J. He received the Adjutant Daniel James III Medal of Honor.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dollie Butler, in 1996.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Bradley and Lucille Camper of New Castle; a daughter and son-in-law, Sondra and Bishop Sherman Mosley of Atlantic, N.J.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services were held in Dickerson Chapel Church, DuPont Highway, Millsboro, with burial in Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery , Bear.
Howard L. Collick Sr.,

Howard L. Collick Sr., 54, of Rehoboth Beach, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2005, at home.
Mr. Collick was born Sept. 23, 1950.
He is survived by his wife, Edna M. Collick; a son, Howard L. Collick Jr.; a daughter, Halina J. Collick; five grandchildren; five sisters; two brothers; a host of nieces and nephews; and various friends.
Services were held at Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Millsboro, with burial Wesleyan Church cemetery , Clarksville.
Maria Lena (DeJulius) Swanson,
retired bookkeeper
Maria Lena (DeJulius) Swanson, 92, of Wilmington and Rehoboth Beach, peacefully entered eternal life surrounded by her family in Orange County, Calif. on Monday, Jan. 10, 2005.
Maria was born in Wilmington, the daughter of the late Francesco and Lucia (Muri) DeJulius on Dec. 3, 1912. After attending Goldey Beacom Business School for the Millard F. Davis Jewelry Store and later, Carl Doubet Jr. Jewelry Store. She worked fulltime until she was 75. An early choir member of St. Anthony of Padua Church, she grew up on West 10th Street in Little Italy section of Wilmington.
In 1949, she married Carl Evert Swanson, who preceded her in death.
She was also preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.
She is survived by her sons, Carl Evert Swanson and his wife Candace of Orange County, Calif., and Eric D. Swanson and his wife Patricia of Lewes; her grandchildren, Tucker, Jesse, Amanda and Kristen; her sister, Mattia Harmon of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; a brother and his wife, Joseph A. and Julia DeJulius of Wilmington; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services were held at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 901 N. DuPont Street, Wilmington, with burial in Cathedral cemetery.

Lester Holleger,

Lester Holleger, 71, of Frederica, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2005, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford.
Mr. Holleger was born Sept. 29, 1933, the son of the late Herman and Ethel (Lindale) Holleger. He was a lifelong resident of Frederica.
Mr. Holleger was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the Korean War.
He was employed as a truck driver for Burris Foods for more than 40 years, retiring in 1995.
He was an avid gardener, fisherman and hunter. He also enjoyed camping and loved to travel.
He was a member of AARP, the American Legion, the Frederica Senior Center and Trinity United Methodist Church in Frederica.
He is survived by his wife, Jean C. Holleger; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Janice and Ken Weiss of Milford and Karen and Rick Sharp of Milton; two sons and two daughters-in-law, Craig and Debbie Holleger of Lincoln and Richard and Judy Holleger of Harrington; two sisters, Grace Moore and Ethel Mae Coverdale, both of Frederica; seven grandchildren, Jeffrey Holleger, Brian Holleger, Keith Holleger, Heather Holleger, Heidi Holleger, Jennifer Sharp and Nicole Sharp; and three great-grandchildren.
Services were held in Berry-Short Funeral Home, Milford, with burial in Henlopen Memorial Park, Milton.

John H. Miller Jr.,

John H. Miller Jr., 86, of Camden, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, at home, surrounded by family and friends.
Mr. Miller was born in Germantown, Pa., the son of the late John H. and Anna M. Miller.
He attended Caesar Rodney schools, graduating from Caesar Rodney High School.
He volunteered for duty with the U.S. Army at the start of World War II and served as a sergeant in the Army’s 47th Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. He fought in the Algerian-French Morocco, Tunisian and Sicilian campaigns. He was wounded in the battle of El Guettor and was awarded the Purple Heart for his wounds and the Silver Star for gallantry in action.
After separation from the military service in 1945, Mr. Miller worked for Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., retiring in 1975.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Mary Hartman Miller; three sons and two daughters-in-law, John H. III and Joni Miller of Camden, Benjamin H. Miller of Rehoboth Beach and Jeffrey B. and Joan Miller of Wyoming; a daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly A. and H. Stewart Crouch of Felton; two grandsons, John H. Miller IV and his wife, Laura; and David K. Miller; two great-grandsons, M. Colby Miller and Justin E. Miller; two great-granddaughters, Alexis Miller and Olivia Miller; a brother and sister-in-law, William A. and Carolyn Miller of Tallahassee, Fla.; a sister, Dolores J. Miller of Florence, S.C.; his mother-in-law, Margaret K. Hartman of Camden; a niece and nephew, Sharon Miller and Tom Miller, both of Tallahassee; and six additional nieces and nephews in New Jersey and Salisbury, Md..
Services were held in the Pippin Funeral Home, Wyoming, with burial private.
