Hudson, E. Lorranie

E. Lorraine Hudson of Smyrna, Delaware, died in Bayhealth/Kent General Hospital, Monday June 11, 2001.

She was 75.

Mrs. Hudson was born May 10, 1926 in Clayton, Delaware the daughter of the late Albert J. and Jeanette Uminski Pleasanton.

She was a homemaker and a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.

She is survived by her husband, Raymond S. Hudson;

2 daughters, Robin R. Colevas of Niskiyana, New York and April L. Hudson of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware; 1 sister, Helen Schofield of Newark, Delaware; a great Aunt, Elizabeth Moor of Chesapeake City, Maryland and 3 grandchildren, Stephanie, Paul and Alexandra Colevas.

Services will be Wednesday June 13, 2001 at 11AM in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main Street Smyrna, Delaware, where friends may call 1 hour before services.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery Smyrna, Delaware.

Biles, Laura E.

Laura Evelyn Biles of Smyrna Landing died on Tuesday, May 29th at the Capitol health care Services of pneumonia. She was 83 years old.

Mrs. Biles was born on March 10, 1918 in Chincoteague, Virginia to the late Harry F. and Viola White Butler. She was married to Edgar Biles, who preceded her in death in 1988. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Calvin and Harold Butler, of Greensboro, Maryland.

Mrs. Biles worked as a waitress at Kirby & Holloway Restaurant in Dover. During World War II, she worked at the Chestertown Ammunition Factory.

She was a member of Smyrna’s Kingdom Hall. She collected dolls and enjoyed flower gardening, camping, and her grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters, Betty Jo Morgan of Marydel and Sandie Caine of wyoming. Also surviving are three grandchildren; Michael Tolbert, Scott Tolbert, and Robin Miller, and one great-grandson, S. Eddie Tolbert.

A Memorial Service will be held at Kingdom Hall in Smyrna on Wednesday, June 6th at 7 PM.

Interment will be private.

Arrangements are by the Torbert Funeral Chapel, Dover, De.

Herman Edward Via

Age 78 of Wilmington, DE died Saturday June 9, 2001 at home with his family.

Mr. Via was born in Schuyler, VA on December 16, 1922. He moved to DE in 1940 and worked for Bancroft Mills until 1948. He then worked for General Motors in the Maintenance Department 50 from 1948-1988 when he retired. He served in the Army in WWII. He also owned a home in Oak Orchard, DE. He enjoyed spending time with his family and Nascar. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church for many years.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mary E. Graham Via; his daughters, Barbara A. Daughtery of Kennett Square, PA, Mary Lou Riley of Bear, DE and her husband Terry; his grandson, Jason Daughtery of Kennett Square, PA and his granddaughter, Kelly Riley of Bear, DE; his brothers, Earl Via of Arlington, VA and Russell Via of Batesville, VA; his sisters Frances Pillow of Faber, VA and Margaret Burton of Faber, VA.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service at Gracelawn Memorial Park Chapel, N. DuPont Pkwy. On Wednesday afternoon June 13th at 2 pm. where friends may call after 1:15 pm. Interment will be in the adjoining memorial park. Friends may call at the DOHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 3200 Limestone Rd., Pike Creek on Tuesday evening from 7-9 pm.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Delaware Hospice Inc., 3515 Silverside Rd., Clayton Building Ste 100 Wilmington, DE 19810.

John A. "Jack" Lynch

Age 80 of Wilmington, DE passed away on Saturday, June 9, 2001. Jack retired in 1982 from the DuPont Company after 39 years of service. He was a 1938 graduate of Salesianum High School and graduated from LaSalle University. He served in the US Navy during WWII. He volunteered in many organizations throughout Wilmington, DE. He was an avid gardner and very proud of his works. Jack is survived by his wife of 50 years, Evelyn Lynch; his children, Daniel J. Lynch of Maui, HI, Linda Lynch of Boston MA, Eileen Montgomery of Wilmington, DE, Jean Lynch Samuels of Wilmington, DE and Terry Shirey of Agusta, GA; his brothers, Joseph, Philip and James Lynch all of Wilmington, DE; his sisters, Rita Burke and Ann Markey both of Wilmington, DE and Mary Dempsey of Georgetown, DE; his grandchildren, Heather Mercante, Matthew Montgomery, Jake and Abbey Samuels. Relatives and friends are invited to attend Mass of Christian Burial at St. Ann's Church, Gilpin Ave. and N. Union Sts., Wilmington on Wednesday, June 13th at 10 am. Entombment will be in the Crypt of St. Rose of Lima, Cathedral Cemetery. Friends may call at the DOHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 1900 Delaware Ave., Wilmington, Tuesday evening from 7-9 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Jack may be sent to Salesianum Building Fund, 1801 N. Broom St., Wilmington, DE 19802 or St. Ann's Building Fund.

O'Rourke, Dorothy E.

Dorothy E. O’Rourke, 93, of Ingleside Care Center, Hockessin, formerly of the Pot Nets Community in Millsboro, died at Christiana Hospital on Monday, June 11, 2001.

Throughout her long life, Miss O’Rourke worked in a variety of occupations in the Wilmington area. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, and drew much happiness from her friendships with the residents with whom she resided at the Ingleside Care Center. She was predeceased by her parents, Thomas and Mary (Mullins) O’Rourke, her brothers, Thomas and John O’Rourke, her sisters, Mary O’Rourke, Katherine Andrews, Elizabeth Therault, Veronica O’Rourke, Nora Fagan, Margaret Ford, and Madeline O’Rourke. She is survived by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, June 14 at 10 am at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Church, 10 Old Church Road, Greenville, where friends may call after 9:30 am. Interment will follow in the adjoining cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Ingleside Care Center, 6525 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin, DE 19707.

Dunmeyer, Julia M.

Julia M. Dunmeyer, age 77, of Felton, DE, died at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital on Monday, June 11, 2001.

Mrs. Dunmeyer was a food service manager and managered many cafeterias and restaurants. Her passion for cooking carried over into her family life, and she enjoyed cooking for her family especially Sunday dinners. Her favorite time of year was Christmas, because she looked forward to spending time with her family and planning Christmas parties with lots of food. Mrs. Dunmeyer loved her children and grandchildren very much and she was a wonderful mother and grandmother and spoiled her grandkids "rotten". She was a hard worker and she enjoyed being around people. In her spare time she enjoyed crocheting, reading, crossword puzzles, and trips to the beach. She will be sadly missed by her family.

Mrs. Dunmeyer is preceded in death by her parents Stephen and Concetta Menaquale.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years Lloyd Dunmeyer Jr. of Felton, two sons Stephen L. Dunmeyer of Millsboro and Frank Edward Dunmeyer of Yorklyn, DE, two daughters Cathy Plank of Dallas, TX, and Rose Marie Panaski of West Chester, PA, a special niece Julie Frank of Wilmington, DE, a sister Rose Dunmeyer of Greenbank, DE, and four grandchildren Stephanie Dunmeyer of Millsboro, Erick Panaski of Philadelphia, PA, Marlana Panaski of West Chester, PA, and Richard Dunmeyer of West Grove, PA.

Services will be Friday, June 15, 2001 at 12:00 PM at the Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Internment will be at the Delaware Veterans Cemetery, Millsboro, DE at 2:00 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, ICU Unit, Dover, DE 19901.

Robert P. Woolsey

Age 68 of Bear, DE passed away on Saturday June 9, 2001. Robert was employed with Delmarva Power & Light Company for 41 years, retiring in 1994. He served in the US Army. Robery is survived by his wife, Barbara A. Woolsey, his sons and daughter-in-laws; Robert A. & Noel Woolsey of Newark, DE, P. Scott & Denise Woolsy of Middletown, DE, Darrin F. & Melissa Woolsey of Bear, DE. 5 precious grandchildren; Ryan, David, Troy, Meagan, and Shawn Woolsey also survive him.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Funeral Services at the DOHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 3200 Limestone Rd., Pike Creek on Friday June 15th at 1 pm, where friends may call after 12 noon. Burial will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, DE. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Robert may be sent to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church Building Fund, 345 Bear-Christiana Rd., Bear, DE 19701.

Knotts, Anna C.

Anna C. Knotts of Smyrna, Delaware died at home Monday June 11, 2001.

She was 87.

Mrs. Knotts was born January 15, 1914 in Williamsburg, Maryland the daughter of the late Herman and Annie Collins Pegelow.

Mrs. Knotts worked as a bookkeeper for Goldinger Farms of Dover, Delaware for several years before retiring in 1969.

She was a life member of the Leipsic Homemakers Club and a member of the Twentieth Century Club of Smyrna and the Needlepoint Stichers of Duck Creek. She attended Asbury United Methodist Church in Smyrna.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William G. Knotts in 1981 and a granddaughter, Barbara Davis.

She is survived by 1 son, William H. Knotts of Smyrna, Delaware;

4 daughters, Nancy K. Darrell of Clayton, Delaware; Rose M. Ford of Kenton, Delaware; Frances Davis of Hartly, Delaware; Norma Jean Layton of Dover, Delaware; 2 brothers, Fred Pegelow of Seaford, Delaware and Ernest Pegelow of Delmar, Delaware; 1 sister, Mary Beckwith of Seaford, Delaware; 12 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

Services will be Friday June 15, 2001 at 2PM in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main Street Smyrna, Delaware, where friends may call Thursday from 7 to 9PM.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery Smyrna, Delaware.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to your favorite charity.

Smith, Vivian D.
Army

Colonel (US Army Retired) Vivian D. Smith

Age 93 of Lewes, DE and Atlantic City, NJ, died of natural causes at Milford, Delaware, Memorial Hospital Tuesday, June 12, 2001.

"Smitty" was born in Atlantic City, NJ on July 4, 1907, the son of Vivian B. and Ella Dawson Smith, both of whom preceded him in death. He was a graduate of Staunton Military Academy in Virginia and studied structural design at the University of Pennsylvania and Columbia University, NY.

Colonel Smith first entered military service by enlisting in the New Jersey National Guard in January 1936. Six months later, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant of Field Artillery. He rose to the grade of Major and was ordered to active military service in September 1940.

During World War II he served as a Division Anti-Aircraft officer, a Tank Destroyer Battalion Commander and an Operations and Training Officer. He concluded his wartime service as a Field Artillery Battalion Commander in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater and reverted to National Guard status in May 1946. He transferred to the United States Army Reserve from which he retired as a Colonel in 1967.

For several years following the war, he and his father operated an architectural firm in Atlantic City. They designed numerous civic buildings in New Jersey and are credited with the design of many Coast Guard stations along the Atlantic coast.

He later moved to Hopatcong, NJ, where he served 11 years as a town councilman, 25 years as a planning board member and 20 years as chaplain of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10101.

His first wife, Jane Virginia Young died in 1984 and shortly thereafter he moved to Rehoboth. When his second wife, Dorothy Dyer, died in 1987, Colonel Smith moved to the Plantations in Lewes where he resided until moving to Brandywine Assisted Living at Seaside Pointe, Rehoboth, DE.

Colonel Smith is survived by two sisters, Judith C. Green of Rutland, VT and Jean S. Richardson of Austin, TX and a number of nieces and nephews.

Burial in Pleasantville, NJ will be private. A memorial service will be held at Brandywine Assisted Living at Seaside Pointe, Rehoboth, DE at 2:30pm on Wednesday, June 20, 2001. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the National World War II Memorial Fund in c/o the ROBERT T. JONES & FOARD FUNERAL HOME, 122 West Main St., Newark, DE 19711.
