Ling, TSgt. James Arleigh

TSgt. James Arleigh Ling (Retired), age 59, of Felton, DE, died Friday June 15, 2001, at Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford, DE.

Jim was born March 13, 1942 in Hurley, VA, the son of the late Walter Edward Ling and Elsie M. Anderson Ling, and also preceded in death by a brother Wally Edward Ling and a sister Joyce Ann Ling. Mr. Ling entered the US Military at the age of 17. He retired a Tech Sgt. From the US Air Force at Dover Air Force Base, Dover, DE after 20 years of service with an Honorable Discharge. During his military career he worked as a Communication Center Specialist. While enlisted he received many distinguished Medals of Honor and other commendations.

Following his retirement from the Air Force, he graduated from Delaware Tech (Georgetown) in 1982 with an associates degree in Applied Sciences. Jim then started his second career by teaching Computer Technology at Kent County Vo-Tech for 5 years. He later took a position with Radio Shack, Tandy Corp., holding several positions during his 13 year career with the company before retiring in June 200. Jim will be remembered as a loving husband, wonderful father and grandfather, an avid fisherman, who fished all over the world, and a person that was loved by all he came in contact with.

He is survived by his loving wife of 6 years Carol A. Ling of Felton, 4 sons and daughters in-law James Walter Ling of New Jersey, George Michael and Patricia Ling of North Carolina, John Arleigh and Gina Ling of Lewes, Robert Alan and Sara Kimmey of Harrington, a daughter Candice L. Ling Brendza of North Carolina, 13 grandchildren,

2 brothers and sisters-in-law George Stanley and June Ling of Florida, Donald Reece and Doris Ling of Arkansas, 2 Brother-in-laws and their wives Edward Alan and Karen Simpson of Tennessee, Richard Earl and Judy Simpson of Lewes, DE, and several nieces and nephews and a host of very close friends.

Services will be Wednesday, June 20, 2001, at 11:00 Am, at the Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 PM. Internment will be at Barratts Chapel Cemetery, Frederica, DE, with full military honors.

Short, June E.

June Edwards Short of Smyrna, Delaware, formerly of Clayton, Delaware, died at home, surrounded by family and friends, Monday June 18, 2001.

She was 88.

Mrs. Short was born September 24, 1912 in Wilmington, Delaware, the daughter of the late Arthur Edwards and Laura Weldin Smith.

Mrs. Short was a self-employed seamstress, making slip covers for her many customers.

She taught Sunday School in the Primary Department of Asbury United Methodist Church for 35 and enjoyed making ceramic crafts for the annual bazaar at Asbury and for the local Sr. Centers.

She was a former member of V.F.W. Post #8801 and the David C. Harrison American Legion Post #14.

Her husband, William M. Short died in 1985.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Sandy and Samuel L. Nickerson, with whom she lived; 1 son, William D. “Skippy” Short at home; 2 granddaughters, Dawne M. Nickerson of Dover, Delaware and Wendy L. and her husband, Paul Bonney of Newark, Delaware; 3 great grandchildren, Logan R. Nickerson of Dover, Delaware and Cameron E. and Hannah M. Bonney both of Newark, Delaware.

Memorial services will be Sunday June 24, 2001 at 3PM in Asbury United Methodist Church, 22-24 West Mt. Vernon Street Smyrna, Delaware.

Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to Special Olympics Delaware, in care of the Kent County Program, University of Delaware, Newark, DE 19711.

Arrangements are by Faries Funeral Directors, Inc., 29 South Main Street Smyrna, Delaware.

Powell, Ronald W.

Ronald W. Powell of Smyrna, Delaware, died Monday June 18, 2001.

He was 54.

Mr. Powell was born September 13, 1946 in Wilmington, Delaware, the son of Wallace Powell with whom he lived and the late Adeline Hilyard Powell.

Mr. Powell was a school teacher for 12 years and was currently working as the Alternative Teacher at the Smyrna Middle School. He had previously taught health and physical education at the elementary and high school levels.

Mr. Powell was a Class of 1964 graduate of Smyrna High School and earned his Associates Degree from Wesley College in 1968 and his Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Delaware in 1970.

Ron loved all sports and played Varsity baseball at Wesley College and the University of Delaware.

He was tremendously devoted to the students of the Smyrna School District and spent countless hours as the head coach of the Varsity and J.V. baseball teams, the Varsity and J.V. Girls basketball teams and the Cross Country and Indoor Track teams. He had also been an assistant track coach.

Ron’s other school activities included being advisor to the Class of 1975 and announcing home football games. He was a member of the Smyrna Atheletic Boosters Club and had previously served as the Department Chair of the Health and Physical Education Departments. He was instrumental in developing the schedule for the Henlopen Conference Basketball season and this past year, had led the coaches in salary negotiations.

Ron loved jogging and had coached in the Smyrna-Clayton Little League.

In addition to his mother, he was preceded in death by a sister, Susan Powell Hoffecker in 1984.

In addition to his father, he is survived by his brother, Bob Powell of Millville, Delaware; 2 nieces, Kristi Hoffecker Wilson of Smyrna, Delaware and Colleen Powell of Millville, Delaware and 1 nephew, Brian Hoffecker of Smyrna, Delaware.

Services will be Friday June 22, 2001 at 1PM in Asbury United Methodist Church, 22-24 West Mt. Vernon Street Smyrna, Delaware where friends may call Thursday from 7 to 9PM.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery Smyrna, Delaware.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to the Ron Powell Memorial Scholarship, c/o Smyrna School District, 22 South Main Street Smyrna, Delaware.

Arrangements are by Faries Funeral Directors, Inc., 29 South Main Street Smyrna, Delaware.

Gressick, Walter J.

Walter J. Gressick, age 81, of Hockessin, diedon Friday, June 16, 2001, at St. Francis Hospital.

Mr. Gressick was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church and was an avid fisherman. His fondest memories are working and planting in his vegetable garden and donating his vegetables to the community. Mr. Gressick was retired from the Dupont Company, where he worked for 30 years.

He is survived by his wife, Marian, his daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Michael Eden.

Service information is private and will be handled at the convenience of the family. Arrangements by Mealey Funeral Homes.

Kassing, Sr., Kenneth Leroy

Kenneth L. Kassing, sr., 54, Ford Road, Dover, passed away Saturday June 16, 2001 at his home in Dover.

He was born on March 16, 1947 in Chester, PA to Howard and Anna (Latshaw) Shutters, Jr..

He was a US Army Veteran and was in the Maintance Dept. for the State of Delaware at the Smyrna Home..

He is survived by Stepfather, Howard Mansvile Shutters, Jr. of Dover, DE. Mother, Anna Mary Shutters of Dover, DE. Son, Kenneth Leroy Kissing, Jr. of Dover, DE. Daughter, Wenonah J. Conley of Georgetown, DE. Daughter, Juice Kissing of Smyrna, DE. Daughter, Khandi Kissing of Smyrna, DE. Brother, Edward A. Kassing of Camden/Wyoming, DE. Brother, Howard Mansvile Shutters, III of New Castle, DE. Sister, Betty Ann Moore of Little Creek, DE. Sister, Mary Ellen McCriady of Bear, DE. 3, Grandchildren .

Remembrance Services will be held Thursday 06/21/2001 01:00 PM at Trader Funeral Home in Dover, DE 19901 with Pastor Ronald David officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

The family request that memorial contributions be given to Delaware Hospic 911 Lotus Plaze Dover, DE 19901.

Phillips, Rosalma A. (Johnson)

Rosalma A. (Johnson) Phillips, age 80, of Wilmington, died Monday, June 18, 2001 at Christiana Hospital.

Mrs. Phillips was a homemaker, and enjoyed crocheting and spending time with her family. She is survived by three children, Edward L. Games of Los Angeles, CA, Barbara M. Kane of Hockessin, and Rosemary T. Tyre of New Castle; four grandchildren, Theresa Engel, and Paul, Stanley and Kimberly Tyre; and six great grandchildren, Andrew, Caitlin and Matthew Engel, Jessica Cleveland, and Kelsey, and James Paul Tyre.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 am at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown Roads, Wilmington, where friends may call after 10 am. Entombment will be at Cathedral Cemetery, Wilmington. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Ronald McDonald House, 1901 Rockland Road, Wilmington, DE 19803.

Elizabeth L. Snyder "Betty Lou"

Age 68 of Wilmington, DE passed away Tuesday, June 19, 2001.

Betty Lou pursued a career in retail sales in the Wilmington area working for S&H Green Stamps, Goodwill Industries and Marshalls Department Stores.

She is survived by her mother, Virginia Dorey of Wilmington; uncles, Charles Foster of Spokane WA, Harry Buffington of Kennet Square, PA; aunts, Mary R. Hage of Wilmington, Barbara M. Hrinak of New Castle, DE; and many close cousins.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a funeral service in the chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, N. DuPont Hwy., New Castle on Friday, June 22nd at 11:45 am, where friends may call after 11. Burial will be in the adjoining memorial park. Arrangements by: DOHERTY FUNERAL HOMES

Bryant, Grover Lee

Marydel, MD -- Grover Lee "Sonny" Bryant of Marydel died Monday, June 11, 2001 in his daughter's home. He was 68.

Mr. Bryant was born March 17, 1933, in Hazlettville, son of the late Howard and Lillian (Thorpe) Bryant.

He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the U.S. Army.

Mr. Bryant worked as a mechanic with Wyoming Concrete.

He enjoyed going to auctions, especially Spence's Bazaar.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Dorothy Bryant; his daughters Jennifer Kinsey of Wyoming, Bertha Bryant and Ronda Blunt of Marydel; two brothers, Wayne Bryant and Paul Bryant of Hartly; two sisters, Ruth Robinson of New York and Rosalee Letho of Hartly; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday in Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Avenue, Wyoming, where the family may call two hours earlier. The Rev. Eldon W. fowler will officiate.

Burial will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Garden of Honor, Dover.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Avenue, Wyoming, DE 19934 to help with expenses.
