Frances P. Lewis "Pat"

Age 75 of Luther Towers II died Sunday, June 24, 2001 in St. Francis Hospital.

Mrs. Lewis retired from Servomation Corporation at Stuart Pharmaceuticals, Newark. She was involved in many social activities at Luther Towers and enjoyed being with her family and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Richard D. Lewis in December 1998.

She is survived by her daughters, Kathy McCabe of Wilmington, Mary Jo Lemon of Bear, her son, James P. Reisser and his wife, Priscilla of Farmville, NC; her sisters Vera Hartman of Harrisburg, PA, Jean Fagan of Marysville, PA; her brother John Richard Lilly of Fort Smith, AR; her grandsons, James P. Reisser, Jr., Brian P. Reisser, Josh Baldwin, Patrick Lemon, Christopher Lemon and Connor Lemon and her great granddaughter, Lindsay Reisser.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 801 N. DuPont Hwy. On Thursday, June 28 at 11:30 am. Friends may call the DOHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 1900 Delaware Avenue, Wilmington on Thursday morning from 9:30-11:00 am. Burial will be in Henlopen Memorial Park, Rt. 1, Milton, DE.

Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Breast Cancer Research, 92 Read's Way, New Castle, DE 19720.

McCarthy, Irene Smith

Irene Smith McCarthy, age 68, of Montclare Estates, Wilmington, died at home on Saturday, June 23, 2001.

She was born on December 29, 1932 to the late Joseph M. Smith, Jr. and Margaret C. (Kift) Smith in Dover, DE.

Irene was a member of St. James Episcopal Church of Wilmington, DE. She was among the first graduating class of Henderson High School in West Chester, PA, graduating in 1951. Irene was looking forward to another class reunion to be held in October of this year. She also loved to attend the family reunions to catch up with all the relatives.

Irene was a true friend to all who knew her. She will be deeply missed by her husband of 47 years, Gerald J. McCarthy. Sr.; her son, Gerald J. McCarthy, Jr. of Newark, DE; a daughter, Janet M. Testerman of Wilmington, DE; four brothers, James J. Smith of Palm City, FL, Joseph M. Smith, III, of New Castle, DE, Ronald K. Smith of West Chester, Frederick A. Smith, Coatesville, PA. Also surviving are two sisters, Janet M. Miles, Coatesville, PA, and Bette J. Feldman of New Castle, DE; eight grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews, including her devoted nephew, Christopher J. Smith of Aston, PA.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 12 noon at St. James Episcopal Church, 2106 St. James Church Road, Wilmington, where interment will follow in the adjoining cemetery. Friends are invited to visitation on Wednesday evening between 7 pm and 9 pm at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown Roads, Wilmington.

Zavoda, Joseph

Joseph Zavoda, age 76, of Wilmington, died at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Elsmere on Tuesday, June 26, 2001.

Mr. Zavoda was a self-employed electronics designer. He was an Army Veteran of World War II and an active Mason in Delaware, New Jersey and North Carolina.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Vivian (Matta) Zavoda; son, Jason Zavoda of Wilmington; daughter and son-in-law, Joy and George Heider and their children, Karen, Laura and Andy Heider all of Wilmington; son and daughter-in-law Joseph A. and Margie Zavoda and their children, Katie, Jenny and Danny Zavoda, all of East Brunswick, NJ; daughter and son-in-law Joan and Todd Savage and their children Megan, Jessica, and Michael Savage of Vermont; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Kovatch of Clifton, NJ.

Funeral services will be held on Sunday afternoon at 1 pm at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown Roads, Wilmington, where friends may call after 12:00 noon.

Bryant, Russel L.

Russel L. Bryant, of Dover, formerly of Port Charlotte, FL, died Wednesday, June 27, 2001 in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 85.

Mr. Bryant was born in Tallua, Illinois on May 21, 1916, son of the late Thelbert and Rosie Bryant.

He joined the Army Air Corp. in 1939 and made the military a career. He obtained the rank of Colonel and had many administrative jobs in the Air Force. When he retired in 1966, he was the Hospital Administrator for Chanute AFB. After retiring from the Air Force he worked with the Department of Aging for the State of Illinois and was Director overseeing nursing home licensing. In 1977 he retired along with his wife Mary to Port Charlotte Florida and held positions in many organizations, such as CEO of St. Joseph Hospital and Commodore of the Port Charlotte Yacht Club.

Russel was a member of the St. James Episcopal Church and the Port Charlotte Yacht Club in Port Charlotte Fl, Elks, American Legion and the Retired Officers Association.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife Mary after 43 years of marriage in 1997.

He is survived by two sons, John Bryant of Dover, and Jim Bryant of Champaign IL; his daughter in-law Vera Bryant, five grandchildren, Melissa Bush, Jeremy Bush, Mark Bryant, Chris Bryant, Laura Bryant, and a nephew Fran and his wife Mitzi Wolf, of Lafayette, NY, plus many friends and family that he cared about.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Delaware Hospice, 911 S. DuPont Hwy., Dover, DE 19901. Letters of condolence may be posted at dmvobits.com/Torbert.

Services will be private. Arrangements by Torbert Funeral Chapels, Dover, DE.

Bittner, Michael Blair

Michael B. Bittner, 47, Avalon Road, Georgetown, passed away Wednesday June 27, 2001 at Beebe Medical Center Lewes.

He was born on September 30, 1953 in to George and Edna Mae (Larimore) Bittner.

He was maintance manager at Harbor Health Services in Lewes, DE He was a 1972 Dover High School Grad. He enjoyed being with his children and family, also enjoyed fishing. He is preeceded in death by his father George Charles Bittner in 2000.

He is survived by Wife, Bath Bittner of Georgetown, DE. Son, Shane Bittner of , FL. Son, Cory McKinney of Georgetown, DE. Son, Addison Bittner of Georgetown, DE. Son, Casy Bittner of Georgetown, DE. Daughter, Brooke Bittner of Georgetown, DE. Daughter, Saje Bittner of Georgetown, DE. Brother, Danny Bittner of Dover, DE. Sister, Louise Balderson of Dover, DE. Mother, Edna "Susie" Bittner of Dover, DE.

Remembrance Services will be held Sunday 07/01/2001 01:00 PM at Trader Funeral Home in Dover, DE 19901 with REv. Harry Harris officiating. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Friends may call one hour before the time of the service at the Trader Funeral Home in Dover.

Coburn Sr. (retired), MSgt. Ronald L.

MSgt. Ronald L. Coburn, age 58, of Felton, DE, died Thursday, June 28, 2001 at his home.

Mr. Coburn retired in 1988 as Master Sergeant from the United States Air Force after 24 years of service. He was a C5 mechanic, a Crew Chief, and Quality Control, and his planes were responsible for many top-level missions that included flying Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi’s equipment and personal items out of Iran after he was overthrown by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, as well as many missions over Vietnam. His plane was also involved in bringing back the Rev. Jones followers back to the United States from Guyana, South America. After retirement from the military, Mr. Coburn worked at Pep Boys in Dover as a salesman. In his spare time he liked to work on cars, and follow all auto racing. He was a loving father, husband and grandfather who liked to spoil his grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his mother Virginia Coburn.

He is survived by his wife, whom he celebrated their 35th anniversary with last Dec. 4 Karen Coburn of Felton, sons Ronald L. Coburn Jr. of Dover, Lee R. Coburn of Felton, daughter Sherri Calvanesa of Dover, father Lee Coburn of Fairhope, Alabama, grandchildren Tyler L. Coburn, Christopher J. Calvanesa, Jessica L. Calvanesa, and a sister Laura Yost of Fairhope, Alabama.

Services will be Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at 11:00 AM at the Melvin Funeral Home, 15522 South DuPont Hwy., Harrington. Visitation will be Monday night from 7 to 9 PM. Burial with full military honors will be at Sharon Hills Cemetery, Dover, DE.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the American Diabetes Assoc. 4 Mainsail Drive, Milton, DE 19968.

Rash, Agnes L.

Agnes L. Rash, 81, Fairfield Rd., Claymont, passed away Friday June 29, 2001 at her home in Claymont.

She was born on September 30, 1919 in Dover, DE to James and Jennie (Carlisle) McClements.

She was a homemaker. After her marriage she resided in Smyrna, DE, she then moved to Claymont, DE in 1985. She did volunteer work for RSVP (Retired Seniors Volunteer Program). She was fondly know as "The Happy Hooker", because she could crotchet so fast. She is preceded in death by her husband Frazier S. Rash in 1979 and her son Frazier F. Rash in 1983..

She is survived by Daughter, Judith A. Robson of Wilmington, DE. 3 Grandchildren, 7 Great Grandchildren, 1 Great Great Grand Child .

Remembrance Services will be held Tuesday 07/03/2001 12:00 noon at Trader Funeral Home in Dover, DE 19901 with Rev. Isabell Gardner officiating. Burial will be at the Sharon Hill Memorial Park in Dover, DE

Friends may call one hour before the time of the service at the Trader Funeral Home in Dover.

Oat, Laura R.

Laura R. Oat, age 88, of Newport, died at St. Francis Hospital on Friday, June 29, 2001.

Mrs. Oat was a homemaker and a member of Peniel United Methodist Church and the Ladies Circle. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Emmett A. Oat; a daughter, Ellen Robinson of Newark; a son, Robert Oat of Newport; a brother, Irvin Robinson of North Carolina; and three grandchildren, Ross and Alan Robinson and Carrie Oat.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 1:30 pm at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown Roads, Wilmington, where friends may call after 1:00 pm. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Peniel United Methodist Church, 115 East Market St., Wilmington, DE 19804.
