Hill, Josephine L.

Josephine Louise Hill of Smyrna, Delaware, died at home Saturday July 21, 2001.

She was 72.

Mrs. Hill was born December 21, 1928 in Burlington, New Jersey, the daughter of the late R. Walton and Ada Downes Smith.

Mrs. Hill and her husband, Alvin E. Hill Sr. worked the family farm for several years before retirement.

She was a member of Ewell’s St. Paul United Methodist Church in Clayton and the Clayton Fire Company’s Ladies Auxillary.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, R. Walton “Buzzy” Smith earlier this year.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by 2 sons, Alvin E. Hill Jr. and Joseph W. Hill both of Smyrna, Delaware and 2 daughters, Linda Hutton of Aquasco, Maryland and Mary Kay Santo of Palmetto, Florida; 2 sisters, Patricia Thorpe of Hartly, Delaware and Mary Emma Short of Harrington, Delaware; 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

Services and burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to ALS Hope Foundation, PO Box 40777, Philadelphia, PA 19107.

Arrangements are by Faries Funeral Directors, Inc., 29 South Main Street Smyrna, Delaware.

Davis, William B.

William B. Davis, a veteran of World War II, died Saturday, July 21 at the Delaware Medical Center from complications following a brief illness.

His devoted wife of 52 years, the former Jane McClain was at his bedside.

Mr. Davis was born in Laurel, Delaware May 4, 1922 the son of the late Henry Clay and Mary Carey Davis. He resided for the past 47 years on a small farm at Seven Hickories near Kenton.

For a number of years he worked for the Internal Revenue Service resigning in the 1960's to form his own accounting firm in Dover which went under the name of Cooper, Davis and Cann before he sold it to Ray Patterson and John Kelly. He served on the Board of Independent Newspapers Inc. and on the Board of the Delaware Home and Hospital in Smyrna to which he was appointed by the late Governor Charles L. Terry, Jr.

In addition to his professional work he was a poet by avocation and published two volumes of his work "Twenty-One Poems And A Prayer" and then "More Poems And A Prayer".

For years he was treasurer, vestryman and teacher at St. Peters Episcopal Church in Smyrna.

He was a brilliant story teller and enthralled generations of youngsters in the large Davis family with yarns about ghosts.

In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter, Rose Mary George, three sons; William Jr. of Oklahoma, Carey of Virginia and Sam at home; another son, Ollie, preceded him in death in 1998; he also leaves 8 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; a sister, Eliza Davis of Wilmington and a brother, Ned of Dover.

Memorial Services will he held Saturday, August 4 at St. Peters Episcopal Church at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers the family requests those wishing to contribute to do so to St. Peters Episcopal Church, 22 North Union Street Smyrna, DE 19977.

Arrangements are by Faries Funeral Directors, Inc., 29 South Main Street Smyrna, Delaware.

Fisher, Rachel Joan

Rachel J. Fisher, 71, East Cherry Dr., Magnolia, passed away Saturday July 21, 2001 at her home with family around her in Magnolia.

She was born on May 17, 1930 in Waltham, MA to the late Yvonne Guilbert and lived in the New England area for many years. She has lived in her current residence since 1978.

She was a homemaker and loving mother to her children and grandchildren. She was a devout catholic and member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, also a life member of VFW Post 3238 and held position of post chaplain. Also life member of the Military order of the purple heart Auxiliary. She loved Bingo, Washington Redskins, and the late Dale Earnhardt, Sr.

She is survived by her Husband of 38 years, Ernest R. Fisher of Magnolia, DE. Son, Ron Fisher of Camden/Wyoming, DE. Son, Micheal Nolette of , MA. Daughter, Nancy Garmache of Cumberland, RI. Daughter, Judy Nolette of Reynoldsburg, OH. Sister, Anita Santoio of , CA. Sister, Ann Guilbert of Burlington, VT. Brother, Ronald Guilbert of , CA. Grand child, Lucas Fisher of Camden/Wyoming, DE. Grandchildren, Melanie & Tracy Cluart of Cumberland, RI. Great Grandchildren, Amber, Haley, and Mandy Cluart all of Cumberland, RI.

Remembrance Services will be held Thursday 07/26/2001 12:00 noon at Trader Funeral Home in Dover, DE Burial will be at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery on Monday 07/30/2001 02:00 PM.

Friends may call one hour before the time of the service at the Trader Funeral Home in Dover.

Adams, June Van Fossen

June Van Fossen Adams, age 68, currently of Lindenwold, NJ, formerly of Barrington and of Gloucester City, NJ, died July 22, 2001, at the home of her daughter following a two year battle with cancer.

She was born in Gloucester City and graduated from Gloucester City High School in 1951. She was a 1971 graduate of Rutgers University. She previously was employed by Citizens Federal Savings and Loan in Berlin and by PSFS in Philadelphia. She was recently employed by PMI Mortgage Insurance Co. in King of Prussia, and served as a mortgage underwriter consultant to many local mortgage companies.

Her daughter would like her to be remembered as an intelligent, independent, professional, unconventional woman with a great sense of humor. She loved literature, drama, and music, and spending time with her family and friends.

She was the beloved mother of Susan L. Adams of Wilmington, DE, who teaches at Sun Valley High School in Aston, PA, and the sister of Kora Kirby of Pineville, NC, of Betty Swartzle Levy of Gloucester City, NJ, and of Sandra O’Brien of Vero Beach, FL. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews, and many close friends.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend a Celebration of Life service to be held on Sunday, July 29 at 12:30 pm at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 20 E. Browning Road, Bellmawr, NJ. Burial arrangements will be private. Contributions may be made in June’s memory to the June Van Fossen Adams Scholarship Fund at Gloucester City High School, Gloucester City, NJ, c/o Joseph Gorman. Arrangements by Mealey Funeral Homes.

Margaret D. (Clark) Kane

Age 94 of Wilmington passed away Saturday, July 21, 2001.

Margaret was born in Cecilton, MD, but lived most of her life in DE. She was employed by the Holiday Inn in Talleyville where she received the Housekeeper of the Year Award in 1976. She attended Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church. Her first love were her family and reading. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 67 years, George T. Kane, Sr. who died in 1991 and her son, Geroge T. Kane, Jr. who died in 1967.

She is survived by her sons, Roland H. Kane of Wilmington and Donald C. Kane and his wife Joanne of Lewes, DE; her niece, Susan Clark Lee of Wilmington; her grandchilren, Rick Kane of Clayton, Sherry Medek of Wilmington, Jeffrey A. Kane of Hockessin, Mary Ellen Galasso of Hockessin, Shelley Taylor or Mooresville, NC and Michelle Perry of Seaford, DE; 12 Great Grandchildren, and 4 great great grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the grave side service at Gracelawn Memorial Park, N. DuPont Pkwy. On Wednesday afternoon, July 25, 2001 at 2 pm.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Mildred Stelle Clark Memorial Fund, c/o the Development Office, University of Delaware, Newark, DE 19716.

Lasana, Clifford C.

Clifford C. Lasana, 81, of Smyrna, died at home on Tuesday July 24.

Mr. Lasana was a World War II veteran, and had been a 55 year resident of Delaware.

He was employed by the Town of Smyrna for 371/2 years as the Superintendent of the Electric Department. He retired in 1984. In addition, he worked on his family farm and had owned and operated an electrical contracting business, Lasana and Son.

He was a member of American Legion Post 14, Smyrna, and had enjoyed collecting antiques and old keys. Mr. Lasana also enjoyed woodworking and refinishing, traveling, visiting historical sites, and dining out. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary E. Lasana, at home; a son and daughter-in-law, D. Clinton and Melody Lasana, of Smyrna; a daughter and son-in-law, Janet L. and Bob Kucher, of Smyrna; 4 grandchildren, D. Clifford Lasana; Alexandria M. Lasana; Lloyd C. Massey; and Mary J. Massey; all of Smyrna.

Services will be held 2:00 PM Friday July 27 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna, where friends may call at 1:00 PM.

Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Smyrna.

If desired, contributions may be sent to: Compassionate Care Hospice, 623W. Newport Pike, Graystone Plaza, Wilmington, De. 19804.

Arrangements were by Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, Smyrna.

FLORENCE "FLO" BRERETON

Age 90 of Milford, DE, died on Saturday, July 14, 2001 at Milford Center, Milford, DE.

Mrs. Brereton managed Brereton Pharmacy in Milford which she and her husband owned from 1934-1967. Flo continued her working career with H.S. Saunders Jewelers in Milford from 1967 until the store closed in 1988 after which she decided to enjoy her life in retirement. She was a member of the Avenue United Methodist Church of Milford and the Mary Circle, the Milford New Century Club, Eastern Star Chapter 11 of Milford, the Soroptomist Club of Sussex County and the Milford Museum where she also served as their bookkeeper for 10 years resigning that position in 2000.

Mrs. Brereton was preceded in death by her husband, Frank E. Brereton in May of 1969.

She is survived by 2 sons and a daughter-in-law; William S. Brereton of Milford, DE and Dr. Robert B. & Georgia Brereton of Wilmington, DE; a brother and his wife, George & Betty Swain of New Castle, DE, 6 grandchildren; Garret and Amy Brereton of Gaithersburg, MD, Robert S. Brereton of Littleton, CO, David L. Brereton of Englewood, CO, Karin Tolliver of Newark, DE and Erica Zartler of Indianapolis, IN, 2 great-grandchildren; Melissa and Natalie Brereton of Littleton, CO and a niece and her husband, Barbara & Warren Smith of Georgetown, DE.

A service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 19, 2001 at Avenue United Methodist Church, 20 N. Church Street, Milford, DE, where friends may call from 9:45 – 10:45 a.m. Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Milford, DE.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Avenue United Methodist Church at the address above or the Milford Museum, 121 S. Walnut Street, Milford, DE, 19963.

Dittman, William O.

William O. Dittman of Clayton, Delaware, died of congestive heart failure, while residing at the home of his daughter, Dollie Woodall of Clayton, Delaware, Sunday July 15, 2001. Dollie and her husband Troy and son Brandon were his caregivers.
