Adams, Phyllis Reed

Phyllis Reed Adams, 78, of Smyrna, died on Wednesday September 5 in her home after an extended illness.

She was born on August 20, 1923, the daughter of the late Elsie and Harry Reed of Smyrna.

Mrs. Adams was a longtime member of St. Polycarp's Church, Smyrna, and the Blessed Virgin Mary Sodality.

Until her illness forced her to stop, she played golf with the 9-hole women's group at Garrison Lake Country Club for many years. She was the 9-hole ladies champion for several different years. Mrs. Adams had many friends from her active golfing years, as well as from the Garrison Lake neighborhood.

She is survived by her husband, Clarence J. Adams Sr., at home; a son, Clarence J. Adams Jr., of Smyrna; two daughters, Phyllis M. Levy, of Sarasota, Fl., and Linda M. Fleming, of Ellendale; four grandchildren, Kristine Adams, and Aaron Adams, both of Smyrna; Michelle A. Shields, of Boca Raton, Fl.; and Melissa M. Sterbins, of St. Louis, Mo.; two great-grandchildren, Kodey Stapleton, of Smyrna; and Justin A. Shields, of Boca Raton, Fl.; two sisters; a brother; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be offered 10:30 AM Monday September 10 at St. Polycarp's Church, Ransom Lane and South St., Smyrna. Friends may call 9:00 AM Monday morning at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna.

Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Dover.

If desired, contributions may be sent to St. Polycarp's Parish Building Fund, 135 Ransom Lane, Smyrna, De. 19977.

Arrangements were by Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, Smyrna.

McNatt, Howard B.

Howard B. McNatt of Smyrna, Delaware, died at home Monday January 15, 2001.

He was 66.

Mr. McNatt was born March 19, 1934 in Chester, Pennsylvania, the son of the late Howard B. McNatt Sr. and Ruth Kilgore McNatt.

Mr. McNatt worked as a maintenance mechanic for Standard Brands in Cheswold, Delaware before retiring due to disability.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Staats McNatt

2 sons, Clinton and Edward McNatt both of Clayton, Delaware; 1 daughter, Kathleen McNatt Brand of Smyrna, Delaware; 1 brother, Steve McNatt of Florida; 2 sisters, Ruth Burris of Clayton, Delaware and Jane Wright of Kenton, Delaware.

8 Grandchildren and his close friend, Sam Jacobs of Clayton, Delaware.

Services will be Thursday January 18, 2001 at 3PM in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main Street Smyrna, Delaware, where friends may call 1 hour before services.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery Smyrna, Delaware.

Petrillo, Carmela Tartaglia

Carmela Tartaglia Petrillo “Tookie”, 68, of Wilmington died on Wednesday, September 5, 2001 in St. Francis Hospital.

Tookie was a co-owner of the Piccolo Mondo Restaurant with her husband and son and served as a hostess. Tookie was a 1950 graduate of Wilmington High School and she graduated from Goldey Beacom College in 1952. An avid trumpet player, she performed with the Wilmington Symphony and the Brandywiners. She was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, the St. Francis Junior Board, and served as a committee chairperson for the Wilmington Flower Market. Tookie enjoyed tennis and was a bridge master. Her high school yearbook caption read “to know is to love her and to love her is forever” and it is still true today.

Tookie is survived by her husband of nearly 47 years, Alexander A. Petrillo, II; her daughters, Cara Petrillo of Hightstown, NJ and Lisa Petrillo and her husband Robert Scally of San Diego, CA; her sons and their wives, Alex Petrillo III and Susan of Wilmington and James Dennis Petrillo and Jane of Williston, VT; her grandchildren, Alexa, Andrew, Katherine, Christopher, Clark and Ava; her sisters, Marie Mauro and Rose Fortunato, both of Wilmington; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Petrillo was predeceased by her brother Allen Tartaglia and her parents, James v. And Rosa (Picciotti) Tartaglia.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday morning at 10:30 am at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Shipley and Weldin roads. Entombment will be in Cathedral Cemetery. Friends may call at the Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown Roads, on Friday evening from 6 to 8 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Delaware Humane Association, 701 A Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.

Staats, Mary R.

Mary R. Staats of Smyrna, Delaware, died at home, Wednesday January 17, 2001.

She was 92.

Mrs. Staats was born September 27, 1908 in Cheswold, Delaware, the daughter of the late Frank and Bessie Jones Robinson.

She was a homemaker.

Her husband, A. Ford Staats died in 1971.

She is survived by 1 son, Herman H. Staats of Millsboro, Delaware; 1 daughter, Mary Ann McNatt with whom she lived; 1 brother, Frank Robinson of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware; 5 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren.

Services will be Saturday January 20, 2001 at 2PM in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main Street Smyrna, Delaware, where friends may call 1 hour before services.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery Smyrna, Delaware.

Valdesere, Sharon Green

Sharon Green Valdesere of Smyrna, Delaware, died at the home of her sister, Tuesday December 5, 2000.

She was 41.

Sharon was born May 23, 1959 in Dover, Delaware, the daughter of the late Frank Green and Mary Ware Green of Dover, Delaware.

She was a homemaker.

Sharon was a 1977 Smyrna High School graduate and received her teaching degree from Salisbury State University in 1982.

In addition to her mother, she is survived by her son, Aaron Valdesere of Milford, Delaware;

6 sisters, Susan McCoy of Heidleberg, Germany; Lois Ergenzinger of Dover, Delaware; Linda Kurry, with whom she was staying; Barbara Betts of Bear, Delaware; Kathy Green of Dover, Delaware and Margie VanDyke of Salisbury, Maryland and her step-brother, Frank Green Jr. of Setuaket, New York.

Services will be Friday December 8, 2000 at 2PM in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 South Main Street Smyrna, Delaware, where friends may call 1 hour before services.

Burial will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park Dover, Delaware.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to Delaware Hospice, 911 South DuPont Highway Dover, DE 19901.

Osmundson, Bjorn A.

Bjorn "Bubba" Allen Osmundson, 19 of Dover, DE died Sat., Sept 1, 2001 at Christiana Care Hospital. Bjorn was born Oct. 5, 1981 in Dover. He was the first born son of Grieg and Candy Osmundson. He attended Dover High School, he was in the U. S. Navy, and most recently worked at Clientlogic. He enjoyed drawing in different mediums and his taste in music was very eclectic ranging from techo to classical, rock to rap, and swing to shred metal. His passion was working on computers, engaging in intellectual conversations, and exploring new ideas with other creative friends. He was very much a unique individual who chose to do things his own way in a style that was genuinely his own. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his brother Leif and Gunther, his Sistewr Svea and Rayna. His maternal grandmother Charlotte Battin, his paternal grandmother Millie Osmundson. An Uncle and Aunt Eric and Cindy Battin, two couins, Courtney and Hunter Battin, also a very close special friend Ashley Troxell. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Thursday Sept. 6 night from 6 to 8 PM at Trader Funeral Home 12 Lotus St. Dover, and a Remembrance service will follow at 8 PM. Graveside services wil be Friday Sept. 7 at 4 PM at Barretts Chaple, Frederica, DE. In lieu of flowers the family would suggest contributions to Gift of Life Donor Program (2000) Hamilton St. Suite 201, Philadelphia, PA 19130-3813 or to your favorite personal charity.

Farrow, Susan Willoughby

Susan Willoughby Farrow, 43, Seeneytown Road, Dover, passed away Thursday August 30, 2001 at her home with her loving family near her.

She was born on March 18, 1958 in Shreveport, LA to Walter and TeNeil Johnson Willoughby.

Susan was working at the Delaware Guidance Services for Children & Youth as the office manager. She also wokked at the Renal Care unit under Dr. Marro. She enjoyed working during the Holidays at Littman Jewelers in the Dover Mall. She was a member of St. Peters Episcopal Church in Smyrna and St. John's Lutheran Church in Dover. She is preced in death by her father Walter Lee Willoughby and her sister Deborah Sue Willoughby.

She is survived by her Husband of 15 years, Bruce Farrow of Dover, DE. Son, Joshua Lee Farrow of Parris Island (USMC), SC. Son, Nicholas S. Farrow of Dover, DE. Daughter, Jessica Farrow of Dover, DE. Daughter, Lauran Farrow of Dover, DE. Mother, TeNeil Willoughby of Marydel, DE. Brother, Dan Willoughby of Orlando, FL. Brother, Carl Willoughby of Dover, DE.

Remembrance Services will be held Wed. 09/05/2001 01:00 PM at Trader Funeral Home 12 Lotus St. Dover Burial will be at the Sharon Hill Memorial Park Dover.

Friends may call Tuesday night 09/04/2001 07:00 PM to 09:00 PM at the funeral home.

Hurd, Edward E.

Edward E. Hurd, 78, of Clayton, died on Monday August 27 at Country Rest Home, Greenwood.

He was born on April 16, 1923, the son of the late Fletcher C. and LuLu L. Hurd. Mr. Hurd was a 1941 graduate of John Bassett Moore High School, Smyrna, and was a Navy veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific.

He was the manager of the Southern States Smyrna-Clayton Coop for 44 years, retiring in 1989.

Mr. Hurd was a life member of VFW Post 8801, Clayton; a member and past president of the Clayton Lions Club; and a member of American Legion Post 14, Smyrna.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by 4 brothers, Fletcher, Earl, Herbert, and Roland Hurd; 7 sisters, Alda Robbins, Nellie Burke, Helen Solloway, Margaret Coyle, Lillian Ivory, Rosa Darrell, and Agnes Warren.

He is survived by his wife, Betty B. Hurd, at home; a daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Kevin Wilson, of Clayton; a sister, Lucille Horsey, of Smyrna; and 2 granddaughters, Ashley and Alison Wilson, both of Clayton.

Services will be held 11:00 AM Saturday September 1 at Matthews-Bryson Funeral Home, 123 W. Commerce St., Smyrna. Friends may call 7-9:00 PM Friday August 31 at the funeral home.

Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Smyrna.

Contributions may be sent to either the Alzheimer’s Assoc. Del. Chapter, 2306 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, De. 19805., or to the American Heart Assoc. of Del., Kent Co. Division, PO Box 1977, Dover, De. 19903.
