John Joseph Bourdon

May 11, 1914 - March 12, 2009

Joe Bourdon, formerly of Wilmington, DE, died in Vero Beach, FL, his home for the last 22 years.

The son of Hugo Frederick Bourdon and Maggie Fahey, he was the co-owner of the Jackson Inn, a family business since 1929. Joe attended Salesianum High School, and worked on part of the Manhattan Project at Deepwater, NJ. He then worked at the Jackson Inn until his move to Florida. He was active for many years with the Wilmington Elks Lodge #307, and was a past Exalted Ruler. He was also affiliated with the Moose and Eagles in Vero Beach, serving as Chaplain for the latter until his death.

In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by his wife of 44 years, Rosalie OConnell; his daughter, Lois Lardear Cuomo; and his son, Jack Bourdon. He is survived by his daughter, Mary Bourdon Hannagan of Wilmington; 3 granddaughters, Brett Bleifer (Adam), Leigh Hannagan (Doug Blecki) and Janet Lardear; 2 grandsons, Vincent Lardear and Alex Hannagan; and 2 great-grandsons, Zach and Luke Bleifer. He also leaves behind an extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews, and his good friend, Betty Skinner of Vero Beach.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Wednesday, March 18, 10 am, at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Church,10 Old Churchville Rd., Wilmington, DE 19807, preceded by visitation at the church from 9 am until Mass. Interment will be at Cathedral Cemetery, Wilmington, DE.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, please make donations in Joes memory to the VNA Hospice of Vero Beach, 1110 35th Lane, Vero Beach, FL 32960.

Alfred J. Fidance, Sr.

Age 87, of New Castle, DE, died Saturday, March 114, 2009. Service, 11 am, Thursday, March 19, St. Thomas the Apostle Ch., 4th & Bancroft, Wilm. Visitation, 9:30-10:30 am, Charles P. Arcaro FH, 2309 Lancaster Ave., Wilm.

Henry L. Chancey Johnson

Of Wilmington, DE, age 55, died March 9, 2009. Memorial service, 11 am, Tuesday, March 17, at Bethel AME Church, 6th & Walnut Sts., Wilm., DE. Friends may call 11 am, Tuesday. Arrangements: Bell Funeral Home.

Ruth I. Leyh

Age 83, of Wilmington and South Bethany, DE, passed away peacefully Friday, March 13, 2009 at Christiana Hospital.

She was born on January 2, 1926 in Scranton, PA to Joseph and Bertha Rowlands. Ruth was predeceased in death by her husband, John (Dutch) Leyh and her brother, Richard Rowlands. Ruth and Dutch raised their family in Wilmington, DE where she was a homemaker her entire life. She especially enjoyed knitting and spending summers at her beach home in South Bethany. She was a loving mother, grandmother and more recently great-grandmother.

She is survived by her 2 sons, Jack of Hockessin and his wife Sue; Jim of Georgetown and his wife Denise. She is also survived by her 6 grandchildren, Stephanie Fleetwood and her husband J.R.; Danielle Perry and her husband Brian and John, James, Alexis and Chelsea Leyh and 4 great-grandchildren, Riley, Aiden, Jack and Bryce and many extended family members and special friends.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Sommerford House for the excellent care she received.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at St. John the Beloved Church on Thursday, March 19, at 10 am. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington. Friends may call at the DOHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek, on Wednesday evening from 6-8 pm.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Delaware Chapter of the Alzheimers Association, 100 S. Main St. Smyrna, DE 19977.

Marie Ott Garbutt

Age 92, of Milford, DE died March 5, 2009. Burial will be private. Memorial service, 2 pm Saturday April 25, 2009 in the Chapel of Berry Short Funeral Home 119 NW Front St., Milford, DE to honor Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Garbutt.

Ebe T. Reynolds Jr.

Of Greenwood, DE, passed away in the presence of family on Friday, March 13, 2009, at the Delaware Veterans Home, Milford. He was 86.

Ebe, son of the late Ebe T. Reynolds Sr. and Sara Harrington Reynolds, was born in Harrington, PA on June 13, 1922. He graduated from Greenwood High School with the class of 1940. He was particularly pleased when he became the longest surviving male of that class. Ebe was drafted in 1942 into the U.S. Army Air Corp. and served overseas in Venosa, Italy in the 485th Bomb Group where he attained the rank of Master Sergeant as a ground Crew Chief. Upon returning to civilian life, he resumed his pre-military position at G.W. Hanks Grocery Store in Greenwood where he had worked since boyhood. In 1953, he and his wife bought Hanks Store which then became Reynolds Market and which they operated until retiring in 1978. He was a member of Independent Bible Fellowship Church, Harrington; a former charter member and former commander of the Greenwood VFW, and a former member of the Gideons South Kent Camp.

Besides his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, John (Jack) W. Reynolds. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Helen Griffith Reynolds; his son, Jay G. and his wife Penny of Dover; (2) granddaughters, Jennifer L. Reynolds of Wilmington and Beth Christiansen and her husband Sean and (2) great-grandsons, Troy and Chase Christiansen of Dover; a brother Charles R. Reynolds and his wife Jeanne of Dover; and a sister-in-law, Nancy Reynolds of Wyckoff, NJ.

Funeral service will be at 1 pm, Friday, March 20, at Independent Bible Fellowship Church, 6797 Milford-Harrington Hwy, Harrington. A viewing will be held on Thursday, March 19, from 6-8 pm, at FLEISCHAUER FUNERAL HOME, 16 W. Market St, Greenwood. Interment will be held at St. Johnstown Cemetery, Greenwood.

Floral tributes are welcome as are memorial contributions to the Independent Bible Fellowship Church, 6797 Milford-Harrington Hwy, Harrington, DE 19952; or The Gideons International, POB 56, Harrington, DE 19952.

Marjorie Marshall Anderson

Age 93, died July 3, 2009, at Cokesbury Village in Hockessin, DE.

Mrs. Anderson was born in Coshocton, OH to Glenn and Leila Marshall. After her marriage to Louis Meredith (Bud) Anderson, she lived in Columbus OH, Parkesburg, WV, Carney's Point, and Arlington, NJ, before moving to Wilmington, DE. She had a life filled with volunteer service to many organizations. During World War II, she served with the USO and the Civilian Defense Corps. Following was an active role in the Wilmington Junior League, the Florence Crittendon Home, the Salvation Army and the Delaware Curative Workshop. Mrs. Anderson was also an active member of Westminser Presbyterian Church where she was a deacon and a volunteer of the office staff. She dedicated a major portion of her life to serving children with special needs. She was a founder of the United Cerebral Palsy Teens, and advisor at Camp Manito where she led the Rainbow Tag Day and served on its Board of Directors. She volunteered at the John G. Leach School and then became a founding member of the Mary Campbell Center, where she served as its first Executive Director and remained a member of the Board of Directors until her death. For 18 years, she was a year round volunteer for the McDonald's LPGA and its tournament to benefit children's charities. She, herself, was an avid golf enthusiast.

Mrs. Anderson was preceded in death by her parents; her step-father, Christy Beall; her sister, Marie Dodd and her husband, Louis M. Anderson, Jr. who died in 1962. She is survived by 2 nieces, Marjorie Lee Wannamaker and her husband Jay of Durango, CO and Ann Anderson Leppla and her husband John of Coshocton, OH.

A memorial service will be held on July 16, at 11 am, at the Mary Campbell Center, 4641 Weldin Rd., Wilmington,DE 19803. Burial will be in Coshocton, OH.

Contributions may be made in Mrs. Anderson's name to the Mary Campbell Center.

Evelyn "Lyn" H. Bookhout

Of Dover, DE, died on Friday, July 3, 2009, in Westminster Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was 91 years old.

Mrs. Bookhout was born May 24, 1918 in Franklin, NY to the late Louis and Edith Harkness Hodges. She was a schoolteacher in New York, Maryland and Michigan, retiring in 1975. She and her husband moved to Dover in 1996. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Dover.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Byron R. Bookhout of Dover; daughter, Anne Wilson and her husband Stephen of Stevensville, MD; and 2 grandchildren, Christopher Wilson and wife Jennilee of Esko, MN, and Patricia Wilson of Stevensville, MD; sister Thelma Baldwin of Binghamton, NY; and nephew, Mark Baldwin and his wife Alex of Binghamton, NY.

Memorial service will be held 2 pm, Friday, July 10, in the Presbyterian Church of Dover, 54 S. State St., Dover.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Music Fund, Presbyterian Church of Dover, 54 S. State St., Dover, DE 19901.

Anna Fanning Breeding

Age 97, of Wilmington, DE, passed away at the Masonic Home of Delaware on July 4, 2009.

Daughter of the late Walter and Martha A. Fanning, Anna was employed as an accountant with the DuPont Company before retiring. She loved to travel, bake pies and was a member of Marshallton United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Warren E. Breeding. Anna is survived by her niece Eleanor Fanning of Marshallton.

The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 8, at 11 am, in the MCCRERY MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 3710 Kirkwood Highway at Duncan Rd. Visitation will start at 10 am. Burial will follow in Silverbrook Cemetery, Lancaster Ave. Wilmington.

Flowers will be accepted.

Alfred Warner

Armstrong III

Age 81, of Wilmington, DE, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed peacefully away on the 6th, July, 2009, after a short battle with cancer.

Born August 3, 1927 in Wilmington, he was the son of the late Alfred W. Armstrong, Jr. and Eleanor VanVechten Armstrong. Mr. Armstrong was an Army veteran of WWII. After that service, he traveled frequently to Europe. While staying in London, he met his future bride, Frances Grahame. She moved back to the United States with Mr. Armstrong and they raised a family of four children. Mr. Armstrong retired from Hercules Inc. as a purchasing agent. This job took him and his family out west before returning home to Wilmington in 1974. Alfred loved books and was a voracious reader of history, biographies, and anything having to do with England or her colonies or the State of Delaware. His encyclopedic knowledge of General European and American history and historical was legendary among his friends. This sharp mind never waned and was evident through the rest of his life. Throughout his life Mr. Armstrong was politically active in the Republican Party.; even running for a Delaware Senate Seat in 1988 but did not win.

Mr. Armstrong was predeceased by his daughters, Jane Armstrong Connelly, and Anne Joslin. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Frances Armstrong, and his children, Alfred W.Armstrong IV and wife Kerry, Fiona Armstrong Lynn and husband John , son-in-law, Ted Joslin, and 3 grandchildren, Evan Connelly, Hannah and Jack Lynn.

The family would like to thank Ted and Rosemary Lassiter, Al Taylor, Joe Lavelle, and John Connelly for the place they held in our father's heart. He will be remembered as a mentor and a source of great support to many in the community.

Words cannot express our gratitude to Delaware Hospice, and Foulk Manor South for their wavering dedication and compassion knew no bounds: we are forever in your debt.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 19, at 1 pm, at St. Mary's Anglican Church, 4201 Washington St. at Lea Boulevard, Wilm. Interment will be in Wilmington and Brandywine Cemetery. Arrangements by MCCRERY FUNERAL HOMES.

Hugh F. Brydges, Jr.

Age 43, of Middletown, DE, passed away on Saturday, July 4, 2009.

Hugh was employed by SCTE in Exton, PA. He was an Air Force veteran and enjoyed traveling.

He is survived by his wife, Maureen; his children, Joshua Garrett Brydges, Nathaniel James Brydges, Justine Nicole Brydges, Hugh F. Brydges, III; his step children, Alexander Holley, Nicholas Gland and Madison Gland; his parents, Hugh F. Sr., and Sylvia Brydges of Davenport, FL; his sister, Sylvia Lewis of Columbia, MD; his nephew, Steven John Westerman and a large extended family.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 10, at 2 pm at the DOHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 3200 Limestone Rd., Pike Creek, where friends may visit after 12 noon. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to NAMI of DE, 2400 W. 4th St., Wilmington, DE 19805.
