Shirley Ann Dixon
Ms. Shirley Ann Hayes Dixon, age 73, of Newark, DE, died on Sunday, July 5, 2009.
Born in Tarrytown, NY on July 9, 1935, Shirley proudly served her country in the Women's Army Corps from 1955 to 1957. She was a talented homemaker throughout her life and volunteered as both a Girl Scout and Boy Scout Troop Leader during her children's youth. A devout Christian, she was a longtime, active member of Salem United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and sang in the choir. Shirley also served as a coach and an umpire in the Todd Scott Baseball League for many years.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, William H. Hayes and Helen M. McNichols Hayes, and a daughter, Louise Hazzard. She is survived by her children, Helen M. Althouse (Michael) of Newark, DE; Richard G. Dixon of Freemont, OH; John W. Dixon of Manchester, TN; and Charles R. Dixon, Jr. (Fae) of Middletown, DE; sister, Gail Gaffney (Jack) of Irvington, NY; 10 grandchildren; and 4 great granddaughters.
A funeral service will be held at 10 am, on Thursday, July 9, at Salem United Methodist Church, 469 Salem Church Road, Newark, DE, where visitation will begin at 9 am. Interment will follow in the adjoining church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Odyssey Hospice, 1407 Foulk Road, Suite 200, Wilmington, DE 19803; or to Delaware Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 100 W. 10th Street, Suite 703, Wilmington DE, 19801, in honor of Shirley's daughter, Louise.

Of Conowingo, MD, age 23, died Saturday, July 4, 2009, at Christiana Hospital. Service, 3 pm, Thursday, July 9, at Gee Funeral Home, 259 E. Main St., Elkton. Friends may call after 2 pm.
Rosemarie B. France
Was granted her angel wings on July 3, 2009. Her final moments were spent surrounded by family and friends that Rosemarie had touched in many ways throughout her life.
Rosemarie was born May 26, 1940 in Einswarden, Germany, to Ernst and Rosa Boeger, both preceded her in death. She lived most of her adult life in Delaware. She worked for Wilmington Trust Company in the trust department, retiring after 26 years of service. In her spare time Rosemarie enjoyed bowling for the Women's Bankers League, knitting, doing puzzles and going to Delaware Park, however her grandchildren were the light of her life.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 47 years, Benjamin; 3 children, Karen Perrine of Newark, John and Robin France of Maryland, Susan France of Wilmington; a sister, Inge and Herman Bigalke of Germany; an aunt, Wally Alberer of Newark; 4 grandchildren, Joshua and Kara Perrine, Damonet' Boyce and Wyatt France. Rosemarie was like a second Mother to all of her grandchildren and will be deeply missed by them.
Friends may call on Tuesday, July 7, from 7-9 pm, at the McCRERY MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 3710 Kirkwood Highway (Rt. 2 at Duncan Road), Wilmington, DE 19808. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held the following day at 10 am, at the Church of the Holy Child, 2500 Naamans Road, Wilmington, DE 19810. Burial will follow at the Cathedral Cemetery, Wilm.

Joan Wagner Gamel
Died peacefully at home on July 3, 2009, of complications from ovarian cancer which she had been battling for five years.
She is survived by Carl M. Gamel, Jr., her husband of 56 years; a daughter, Susan Gamel-McCormick of Newark, DE and her husband, Michael Gamel-McCormick and 2 children, Caitlin and Thomas Gamel-McCormick; a son,Thomas Gamel of Lake Forest, CA, his wife Ginny Gamel; a son, Patrick Gamel and step-daughter Erin Clark; and a brother LeRoy A. Wagner of Wilmington.
There will be a Celebration of Life service at St. Paul's Methodist Church at 11 am on Friday July 10, followed by a gathering in the church lounge. There will be no burial at this time.

Maurine Talmadge Garratt
Age 80, of Elkton, MD, passed away peacefully July 4, 2009, at her home.
She was born in Ansonia, CT on February 1, 1929, the daughter of the late Charles and Hazel Talmadge. She was a member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church in Wilmington, DE. Maurine was an animal lover and a member of the Delaware Humane Society.
She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Walter E. Garratt of Elkton, MD; 2 sisters, Cornelia Landis and her husband Phillip of Sedona, AZ and Roberta Holborough of Gainesville, FL; and a niece Sharon Holborough.
A funeral service will be held at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, 2800 Duncan Road, Wilmington, DE on Thursday July 9, at 10 am. Burial will be private at a later date.

Margaret E. Hobson
Age 99, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully July 1 at Shipley Manor Health Care Center.
She was born August 6,1909 in Wilmington. Mrs. Hobson was a homemaker, accomplished gardener, dedicated wife and mother.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Charles Edward and Delores Hobson of Wilmington and daughter-in-law, Nancy Hobson of Claymont; and grandchildren, Richard E. Hobson of Townsend, Alan W. Hobson of Wilmington, Susan H. Panico of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Charles A. Hobson of Claymont and James Hobson of Philadelphia. Her husband, Charles A. Hobson and son, James L. Hobson, preceded her in death.
Services will be private.

Catharine "Kay" Elizabeth (Worsfold) Looney
Kay passed away on Thursday July 2, 2009, at home, surrounded by her family after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease.
She was born in 1928 in New Westminster, BC Canada, daughter of Cuthbert John Worsfold and Dorothy Eleanor (Cornell) Worsfold. Kay graduated from the Duke of Connaught High School in 1945 where she excelled in academics and athletics including softball, basketball, riflery and swimming. She held the British Columbia record for women's 50 yard freestyle and won the Canadian Open 50 yard freestyle in 1946 A graduate of the University of British Columbia, she earned her PhD in chemistry from the University of Washington in Seattle, WA where she met her future husband, Franklin S. Looney, jr. of Beaumont, TX. married in 1953, Kay and Frank both joined E.I. DuPont de Nemours and Co. and moved to Wilmington where Kay was the first woman PhD chemist at DuPont's central research department. She wrote and co-developed many patents during her career in analytical chemistry, imaging and life sciences. Kay was involved in many activities and groups including the Occidentals, the Wilmington Dubarry Assembly, and USTA Women's Tennis. She was a member of the 1997 National Senior Sectional Women's Tennis Championship Team from the DuPont Country Club. Kay enjoyed summers in Lewes, DE with friends and family.
In addition to her husband of 56 years, Kay is survived by her sons, Michael F. Looney (Tanya) of Wilmington and J. Patrick Looney (Alice) of Westhampton, NY and 5 grandchildren, Elizabeth, Alexandra, Sid, Natalie and Juliana.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am, on Friday July 10, at Christ Church Christiana Hundred. Burial will be private.

Joseph R. Manuppelli
Age 81, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on July 3, 2009 at home surrounded by his family.
Joe retired as a distinguished international engineer from the Boeing Company. He received numerous commendations from Boeing, NATO and from companies around the world for improving the safety of helicopter fleets. He served his country in World War II in the Strategic Air Command (SAC) and for many years as a USAF reservist.
He is survived by his wife Cleo Pearson and children Nancy Falasco, Dana Trapp, Garry Dauron, Joe's sisters Rita Millar and Francine Larks, grandchildren and extended family members. He will be remembered as a wonderfully supportive, generous and significant role model for his children. Joe will be dearly missed.
Services will be private.
