William D. Mathewson "Pat"
Age 82, passed away peacefully at his Wilmington, DE, home on Thursday July 2, 2009, of melanoma.
Pat was born in Henry Clay, Delaware, to the late F. Leslie Mathewson, Sr. and Elizabeth (Robinson) Mathewson. He was the descendent of early Swedish and Dutch ancestors who immigrated to New Sweden about 1654 and made their home on the north side of the Brandywine Creek. Pat took great pride in being a "creeker" - someone being born and reared on the Brandywine Creek. He attended Alexis I. DuPont School and was drafted into the Army in 1945 during his senior year. He served in the Philippines and Japan. After discharge, he completed his senior year at P.S. DuPont High School. He attended Temple University and the University of Delaware. He was a craft supervisor at the DuPont Experimental Station retiring in 1986 with 38 years of service. He bred, trained and showed AKC Champion Chesapeake Bay Retrievers under the name of DeNemours Kennels, Reg. His dogs accomplished numerous titles in AKC Shows and Obedience Trials. He was a life member of the Wilmington Kennel Club, Inc. serving the club as an Officer, Show Chairman and was Delegate to the American Kennel Club for more than 20 years. Later, European travel and caravanning with his Airstream Travel Trailer became his interest. Pat was a member of three units of the Wally Byam Caravan Club International, Inc. He visited all 50 states of the U.S. and all the provinces of Canada. He was also a member of the International Caravanning Association. As a young man, he was an active member of the Talleyville Fire Company and the Delaware State Fire Police Association. He was a fireman at heart to the very end. He was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church.
Pat is survived by his wife of 44 years, MaryJane (Hammond) Mathewson; a sister, Jane M. Pyle of Denver, CO and 3 nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Alice M. (Skipper) Blackburn; a brother, Frank J. Mathewson, Jr. and 2 nephews.
The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Kathir Suppiah, MD and his staff for their kindness shown to Pat. Also, an extra special thank you to Wendy Strowhouer, RN for her efficient gentle care and to the Compassionate Care Hospice staff for being so thoughtful.
A funeral service will be held on Friday July 10, at 11 am, at the CHANDLER FUNERAL HOME, 2506 Concord Pike, Wilmington, DE. Friends are invited to call at the Chandler Funeral Home on Thursday evening from 7-9 pm.

Dolly E. Mickel
Age 82, of Lewes, DE, passed away Friday, July 3, 2009, at the Harbor Health Care & Rehabilitation Center in Lewes.
She was born in Reading, PA March 18, 1927 daughter of the late Howard and Lillian Zohner. Mrs. Mickel owned Dolly's Bait and Tackle at the foot of the Love Creek Bridge in Lewes for ten years, beginning in the middle 1960's. Customers came from as far as Philadelphia to purchase fresh clams from the gregarious businesswoman. A professional softball pitcher, she signed a contract with the Women's All-American League in Kenosha, Wisconsin and played for years in Reading.
Her husband Harry F. Mickel preceded her in death. She is survived by 3 sons, Ronald L. VanSciver of Hollywood, FL, James H. VanSciver of Salisbury, MD, Gary VanSciver of Lewes, DE; a daughter, Holly L. VanSciver of Lewes, DE. She was given custody of and raised a baby granddaughter, Katie VanSciver, now living in Charlottesville, VA. She also has 5 additional grandchildren, Gary VanSciver of Lewes, Ryan VanSciver of Baltimore, MD, Lindsay VanSciver of Columbus, OH, Shane VanSciver of Baltimore, MD and Clint VanSciver of Salisbury, MD.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 11, at 1 pm, at the chapel of MELSON FUNERAL SERVICES, 32013 Long Neck Rd, Millsboro, DE. 19966, where friends may call after 12:30 pm. Interment will be private.
William A. "Bill" Morgan
Willliam A. "Bill" Morgan, age 61, of New Castle, DE, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, July 1, 2009, at his residence.
Mr. Morgan was born in Wilmington, DE on October 8, 1947, the son of the late Mary V. (French) Morgan. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army, completing several tours in Vietnam. He was an elite member of the Special Forces as a Green Beret and also served in the 101st Airborne Division. Mr. Morgan was awarded the Bronze Star for heroism in ground combat and a second Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in ground operations against hostile forces. In addition, Mr. Morgan was awarded an Air Medal; two Army Commendation Medals; three Good Conduct Medals; and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. He completed his Army career in the rank of Sergeant First Class.
From 1990 to 1997, he touched the lives of many children as he coached and managed the Police & Fire baseball team. During this time, he led the team to many championships by teaching the children the fundamentals of baseball and the value of teamwork.
Mr. Morgan was preceded in death by his wife, Anita in 1996 and sister, Mary Ellen in 2008. He is survived by his daughters, Heather Mendiola and husband, Rudy, and Dawn Morgan and fiancé, Conley; sons, Matthew and wife, Joie, Brian and girlfriend, Samantha, Christopher and fiancée, Kacey, Kevin and girlfriend, Ashley, and Joseph; grandchildren, Jamie, Carlos, Christiana, Justin, Anita and Michael; sister, Patricia Logeman; mother-in-law, Sara Stearrett; brothers-in-law, Mark Stearrett and Glenn Stearrett and wife, Kathy; and many nieces and nephews.
Our father devoted his life to his children. He cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren as much as we will cherish our memories of him. It is heartbreaking to lose a man such as our Dad, yet we find comfort in knowing that he has reunited with our Mom in heaven. Together they will live in our hearts forever.
A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 11 am, on Thursday, July 9, at Holy Spirit Roman Catholic Church, 12 Winder Road, New Castle. A visitation will be held from 6-8 pm, on Wednesday, July 8, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. Interment will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.

Thomas E. Newell
Age 57, of Frankford, DE, formerly of Parkesburg, PA passed away suddenly on Friday, July 3, 2009, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes, DE.
Mr. Newell was born on October 13, 1951 son of the late Thomas A. and Marion (Montgomery) Newell of Landenburg, PA. Thomas had previously been employed with Crystal Spring as an installer of water purification systems before retiring in 2003. He was a Friend of Bills for 20 years, had sponsored 2 halfway houses and was also the state delegate for the prisons. Thomas was also an active participant of Mariner's Bethel United Methodist Church in Ocean View, DE where he taught the Living Free and Celebrate Recovery classes. Thomas was also on the board of Plantation Park where he was currently serving as Vice President. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing and going to his home away from home Chincoteague, VA.
He is survived by his loving wife Hope (Leonard) Newell; 3 daughters, Maria DeCerio of Frankford, DE, Lucia DeCerio of Patchogue, NY and Stephanie Mocarski of Sunny Isles, FL; his loving grandson, Dean Edward DeCerio of Frankford, DE; and his girls, Diva, Tootsie and Sneaky.
A funeral service will be held at 2 pm, on Wednesday, July 8, at Mariner's Bethel United Methodist Church, 81 Central Ave., Ocean View, DE 19970, where friends and family may call after 1 pm. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery.

Alda Marlin Noftsinger
Age 82, died Friday, July 3, 2009, at Cadbury in Lewes, DE.
Mrs. Noftsinger was born on a farm on the James River near Goochland, VA. She was a graduate of the University of Richmond. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, Sunday school teacher, member of the American Association of University Women and New Century Club of Newark, DE. Additionally, she was active with The ARC of Delaware and was an avid bridge player and gardener. She was formerly of Wilmington, DE and Richmond, VA.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Benjamin Noftsinger and 2 sons, John Noftsinger and Robert Benjamin Noftsinger, Jr. She was also preceded in death by 4 sisters. She is survived by her 2 daughters, Leslie Noftsinger Coates and husband Raymond D. Coates. Jr. of Berlin. MD, and Nan Noftsinger Monday and husband Thomas G. Monday of Fairfax Station, VA. There are 4 grandchildren, Lindsey Coates Brown of McLean, VA, Lauren Coates of Berlin Tyler Monday and Zach Monday of Fairfax Station, VA. Also surviving is a sister, Dorothy M. Barger of Stuart, FL and several nieces and nephews.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, July 8, at 11 am, at Evegreen Burial Park in Roanoke, VA.

Joan Ann Stringer
Age 73, lifelong Wilmington, DE, resident, passed away peacefully at the Christiana Hospital on Sunday, July 5, 2009, with her brother Gerald by her side.
Mrs. Stringer was the daughter of the late Dennis and Catherine (Lewis) Donovan. She was a retired inspector at the Pepsi Cola Bottling Company. She was everyone's favorite sister, aunt and babysitter. She was a dedicated member of St. John the Beloved Parish where she tirelessly volunteered her time. She enjoyed a second home at St. John's assisting with the church carnival, school luncheons, fundraisers and any other event for which she was needed. Currently, she was the oldest cheerleading coach in the Catholic Youth Ministry and was the squad's most dedicated fan. She will be remembered for her everlasting kindness, generosity and courage.
Joan was predeceased by her beloved husband, Joseph Francis Stringer, Jr. in 1978; her parents; and her sisters, Mary "Betty" Pasquale and Teresa Groves. Her brother, Matthew Donovan, also preceded her death. She will be dearly missed by her brothers, Francis, John, Gerald and Thomas Donovan, all of Wilmington, DE and Donald Donovan of Naples, FL. Also surviving are her numerous nieces and nephews, especially Cathleen Kennedy, Teresa Williams and Mary, John and Catherine Hall.
Friends and family are invited to visitation on Wednesday, July 8, between 6-8 Ppm, and Thursday morning, between 9:30-10:30 am, at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road, Wilmington, DE 19808 where Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 am. Entombment will follow at Cathedral Cemetery.

James A. Diana, Sr
Of Wilmington, DE, died at home with his family on March 13, 2009, at age 77, just 10 days from his 78th birthday.
Jim was born and raised in Hazleton, PA son of the late Michael A. and Catherine C. Diana. He served in the US Coast Guard during the Korean War. Jim joined the Wilmington Police Dept. in 1956 and proudly served the city of Wilmington until he retired in 1973 as a Lieutenant. He worked for Brandywine College (Widener University) for 12 years and then worked for Hercules until he retired in 1996.
He will forever be in the hearts of his wife, of 39 years, Linda, their 5 children and 10 grandchildren.
