Mabel-Alyce (Pat) Ryder Cundiff
Pat Cundiff -- teacher, homemaker, nature-lover, and volunteer -- died Friday, February 6, 2009, from complications of diabetes.
Pat was the tenth and youngest child of George Washington Ryder and Margaret Rachel Ramsey Ryder, of Mountain Grove, Virginia. She was educated in Marlinton, WV, where the family had moved so the older children could attend high school. After high school, she completed medical technology training in St. Louis, Missouri, then worked at hospitals and a DuPont factory in West Virginia. She visited family regularly, and loved bringing Christmas presents to the farm each year for her nieces and nephews. In 1946, DuPont transferred her to the Chambers Works Plant in Deepwater, NJ, where she worked in cancer research. She settled in Wilmington and became active in her new community. Pat joined the Wilmington Trail Club in 1946. She was Membership Chairman when the club first reached the 100-member mark. She met Lester B. Cundiff -- engineer and World War II veteran -- in the Trail Club. They married April 30, 1949, at Grace Methodist Church in Wilmington. Pat was also a charter member of Wilmington Storytellers and taught storytelling workshops for many years. Pat and Les moved to Claymont and raised two children -- Deborah C. Starr and David R. (Dave) Cundiff. As the children grew, Pat volunteered in children's work. She taught and led Sunday School programs at Atonement Methodist Church, and led Brownie Troop 218. She also served as Girl Scout Neighborhood Chairman for Claymont and served on Wilmington District Girl Scout committees. The family moved to New Castle in 1961. Pat taught Sunday School at Asbury Methodist Church in New Castle and -- after moving to Pennsylvania in 1965 -- at Newark (Delaware) United Methodist Church. She was certified as a Lab School Teacher and was Sub-District Director of Children's Work for the Methodists' Peninsula Conference. With her children grown, Pat directed and helped found the Christian Pre-School at Grace United Methodist Church in Wilmington. Later she organized and directed the Community Pre-School at Oxford Presbyterian Church in Pennsylvania. She became a licensed Real Estate sales person and worked for several agencies in Newark, DE. In 2003 she earned a certificate as a Stephen Minister at Newark United Methodist Church. Pat loved birds, animals, and gardening. She was a member of Hoe 'n' Hope Garden Club and served as President of West Grove Garden Club. She volunteered at Tri-State Bird Rescue and Delaware Humane Association. All her life, Pat cared for old people -- especially those without much family support. She visited, volunteered, and made friends at Pocopson Home, Chatham Acres, and other nursing homes. She brought music -- and a sympathetic ear -- to many patients' rooms. In recent years, Pat's mind and body couldn't do this any more. She still enjoyed talking about old friends and community work. Les cared for her full-time in her last years, keeping Pat safe and enjoying many family visits. In Pat's last weeks, Les had help from Heartland Hospice and from Comfort Keepers, both in Chadds Ford. We were so blessed to have that help in a difficult time!
Pat is survived by husband Les Cundiff; by children, Debbi and Dave; by daughter-in-law, Sandy Cundiff; and by granddaughter, Sarah Joy Cundiff.
Funeral will be in Hot Springs, Virginia, with burial in Les' hometown of Vinton, Virginia.

John S. Greeley
Age 60, passed away suddenly on February 6, 2009, at Christiana Hospital.
He was born and raised in Ridley Park, PA. He graduated from Ridley Park High School with the class of 1966 and later attended Goldey-Beacom College and the University of Delaware for Business. After working for Westinghouse in Lester for 10 years, John enjoyed International Travel taking him to Asia, Africa, and Europe. John was in the Army during Vietnam War. He has resided in Wilmington, DE since 1986. He was the Owner and Operator of Greeley Construction, Inc. for 23 years. He expresses gratitude to and fondly remembers all those who have worked with him throughout the years. John loved sunshine and nature, spending his summers in Pot Nets, DE where he kept his trailer and boat for fishing and crabbing. He is remembered by his children and wife for his great sense of humor, his love for sports, his selfless generosity, his appreciation of spiritual rather than religious values, and his hope that his country will promote peace and much needed service in this world.
Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Ulrike Backer Greeley; children, Christine Greeley, Michelle Greeley, and Matthew Greeley, all of Wilmington, DE; and father, John Greeley of Ridley Park, PA. John was predeceased by his mother, Doris I. Warlow Greeley (died in 2005) and 1 sister, Karen Greeley (died 1971).
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 13, at 11 am, at the MORELAND-PAGANO FUNERAL HOME, 825 Main St., Trainer, PA. Interment in Lawn Croft Cemetery, Linwood, PA. Viewing, Friday 9:30-11 am, at the funeral home.
Ralph J. Hahn
Of Lincoln, DE, passed away Saturday, February 07, 2009, at his home surrounded by family members. He was 82.
Mr. Hahn was born on April 9, 1926 in Freeport, New York, son of the late Royal F. and Agnes (Hart) Hahn. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving his country during World War II with the 376th Infantry Regiment and as a member of the 298th Army Band. Mr. Hahn was employed as an industrial engineer for ILC in Frederica. During his tenure with the company, he often worked closely with the astronauts and NASA officials fulfilling their contract for the design and production of the astronaut's space suits. He retired after 29 years with the company. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Lindenhurst, New York.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Doris M. Hahn in 2004. He is survived by 2 sons, Steven R. Hahn and his wife, Cheryl of Denver, CO and Jeffrey R. Hahn and his companion, Jean Donovan of Laurel, DE; 2 daughters, Janice E. Hahn of Lincoln, DE and Sheila M. Smith and her husband, Charles of Lincoln, DE; a brother and sister-in-law, Kenneth and Dorothy Hahn of Hampton Bay, NY and a sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Herb Averell of Hackettstown, NJ.
Services will be held at 5 pm, on Wednesday, February 11, at ROGERS FUNERAL HOME, 301 Lakeview Avenue, Milford, where friends may call two hours prior. Entombment will be held at 2 pm, on Thursday at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Millsboro.

William G. Hollis "Chubby" "Pop Pop" "Bill"
Of Claymont, DE, passed away on Saturday February 7, 2009, at The Heartland Hospice House at the age of 78.
Bill was born in Wilmington, DE, the son of the late John and Myrtle Hollis and has made Wilmington his lifelong home. He served his country proudly as a member of the US Army. Bill was a Sheet Metal Worker by trade working for All American Engineering and he retired from Wilmington Sheet Metal after 29 years faithful service. Bill was a member of Armstrong Masonic Lodge #26, Newport, DE and the "RC" Club. He was described as a real people person, he loved dogs, cats and horses. He enjoyed horse racing and stock car racing; but most of all Bill's heart belonged to his family. He was proud to be "Pop Pop" to 18 and he loved spending time with his great-grandchildren.
Bill was predeceased by his son, Brian K. Hollis; sisters, Lorraine Smallwood and Norma Tilley; and brother, George Hollis. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 48 years, Marjorie M. Hollis; his daughter, Ginny E. Ramski and her husband Stanley of New Castle, DE; step-daughter. Jo Ann Neumann of Bear, DE; grandchildren, Paul Hartley and his wife Ericka, Gini Ramski, Felicia Czerwinski, Aaron Hollis, Thomas Hollis, David May, Jr., Lisa Marine and her husband Brian and Melissa and Richard Wehry; great-grandchildren, Connor Hartley, Chayse Hartley, David May, III, Ashley May, Jonathon May, Joseph May, Chloe Marine, Emerson Marine, Sophie Marine, Austyn and Kayla Wehry.

John J. Murphy "Jack"
On Thursday, February 5, 2009, John "Jack" Murphy, 87 of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully with family members by his side.
John was born in Wilmington on November 12, 1921, son of the late John J., Sr. and Emma R. (Kramer) Murphy. He grew up on Lincoln Street in the Forty Acres section of Wilmington and attended St. Ann's Parish School. John graduated from Wilmington High School, where he played football and ran track for the Red Devils. A proud veteran of World War II, John was inducted into the United States Navy in 1942 and was attached to a PB4Y Squadron at Floyd Bennett Airfield in Brooklyn, NY. He later served in Deland, FL and had duty stops at Pearl Harbor and Tinian Island before being honorably discharged in 1946. While stationed at Floyd Bennett Airfield, John met his future wife, Ann Patricia McGann of Brooklyn, NY and they were married at St. Ann's Church in Wilmington on October 12, 1946. During the 1950's and 60's, he co-owned Murphy and Kirk Heating and Cooling. John later was employed with Mechtron Industries and Breeding & Day, Inc.
His wife, Ann (McGann) Murphy, passed away in 2002; and his sister, Margaret "Peggy" Elliott, passed away in 2005. John is survived by his sons, John "Jay" Murphy and his wife, Debbie and Kevin Murphy all of Wilmington; and his grandchildren, Keith Murphy of Ft. Myers, FL and Kelsey Murphy of Wilmington. In addition, he is survived by his aunt, Betty Fletcher; his nieces, Kathleen Karris and Karen Elliott; and his brother-in-law, Robert Elliott.
The family would like to thank the staff of St. Francis Hospital ICU for the loving care provided to Mr. Murphy.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Ann's Church, Gilpin Ave. & N. Union St., Wilmington on Wednesday, February 11, at 11:30 am. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. Family and friends may visit at the DOHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 1900 Delaware Ave., Wilmington on Wednesday, from 10-11 am.

Wayne Richard Arthurton
Passed way in Rochester, NY, on February 14, 2009.
Wayne was a counselor with the Greece Central Schools. After retirement, he was a tutor with Webster Schools and BOCES I. Wayne was a Deacon and active member of Twelve Corners Presbyterian Church.
Predeceased by his parents, Kenneth and Mildred Arthurton; brother, Leslie Edward Arthurton; and sister, Mary Arthurton. He is survived by his wife, Valerie; sons, Wayne A. and Ryan T. Arthurton; sister, Marsha MacWilliams; brothers, Kenneth George (Diane) Arthurton, Alan James Arthurton; sister-in-law, Jean Arthurton; nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends Friday, 4-7 pm, at the funeral chapel, 2305 Monroe Ave, Rochester. Friends are invited to bring a written memory or photo of Wayne for the family's memory book. Interment will be private. A memorial service will be held Saturday, 2 pm, at Twelve Corners Presbyterian Church, 1200 S. Winton Rd, Rochester 14618.

Age 90, passed away Friday, February 13, 2009.
She was the beloved wife of William Pedlow Evans (deceased) and devoted mother of William Mills Evans (deceased). Ruth was a life long resident of Chester, PA. She greatly valued her 37 years of service at John F Cullis & Sons in Chester.
She will be greatly missed by her surviving family - nephew, James Lange of Neenah, WI; nieces, Virginia Weston of Murrells Inlet, SC and Marjorie (Lange) Mundy of Wilmington, DE her husband Michael and their children, Kira, Sabra and Joshua.
