George E. Thompson Jr.

Age 73, of Woodlake Village, SC, died Saturday June 28, 2008 at Waccamaw Community Hospital.

He was born in Wilmington, DE to the late George Emmett and Vivian Lloyd Thompson. Mr. Thompson worked for Longwood Gardens for 37 years with only an interruption to serve the U.S. Army as an intelligence agent. He followed in his fathers footsteps as a long time business administrator and resident on the grounds that he loved so much. Mr. Thompson loved sports of all kinds. He was an avid golfer and the former president of the Kennett Square Golf Club in Kennett Square, PA.

He is survived by his wife, Joan, of Murrells Inlet, SC; his son, Steve Thompson, of Mt. Pleasant, SC; daughters, Laurie Melchior, of Charlotte, NC, and Linda Gibson, of Alexandria, VA; grandchildren, Mark and Tony Melchior, and Churchill, Daniel, and Marie Gibson; a brother, David L. Thompson, of Richmond, VA; half brothers, Douglas Thompson, of West Chester, PA, and Bruce Thompson, of Colorado; sisters, Joyce Ferguson of Delaware and Nancy Hardy of Pennsylvania. Mr. Thompson was predeceased in death by his brother, Richard Thompson.

A memorial service will be held at 3 pm, Tuesday July 1, at GOLDFINCH FUNERAL HOME, BEACH CHAPEL, SC.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 1131, Fairfax, VA 22038.

Rita Ann Saienni

Rita Ann Saienni, age 72, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on July 12, 2008, following a brief battle with cancer.

Ms. Saienni was born in Wilmington on November 10, 1935, daughter of the late Samuel and Lucy (Ciccone) Saienni. A loving wife, mother, and grand-mother, she was an endlessly devoted homemaker, finding great joy in cooking and spending time with loved ones. She possessed a deep love and adoration for all of her family and friends, holding a particular affection for her brothers. Blessed with many talents, Rita was a skilled writer and seamstress, having made much of her own clothing. Her creativity led to her attainment of several patents and copyrights, including a published coffee table book.

She had also worked for Home Interiors. Rita enjoyed singing and was an avid fan of Frank Sinatra.

Ms. Saienni is survived by her sons, Frederick P. Buiano Jr., with whom she lived, and Anthony Buiano; granddaughter, Madeline; brothers, Samuel Saienni Jr., Joseph James Saienni, and Frank Anthony Saienni and wife Mary; former husband, Frederick P. Buiano; and a host of extended family and friends. She was predeceased by her brothers, Robert and Richard; and uncle, Spike.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Anthony of Padua Church, 9th and DuPont Sts. in Wilmington, on Wednesday morning, July 16, at 11 am. Interment will be held privately. Family and friends may call at the CHARLES P. ARCARO FUNERAL HOME, 2309 Lancaster Ave. (opp. Cathedral Cem.), on Wednesday morning, prior to mass, from 9-10:30 am.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Delaware Humane Association, 701 A Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.

Shawn McClafferty

Age 50, of Greenville, DE died on Tuesday, July 15, 2008.

He was a graduate of Archmere Academy and Montgomery Junior College and the owner of McClafferty Printing in Wilmington. An avid golfer and Philadelphia sports fan, he was also a member of DuPont Country Club and supported many local charities.

His mother Mary (Adams) McClafferty preceded him in death. Shawn is survived by his wife of 29 years, Marybeth (Motz) McClafferty; his sons, Bryan and Matthew; his grandson, Colin and his mother, Elizabeth Gleason; his father, William J. McClafferty, III; his sister, Sharon Heller and her husband Jeff; and his sister, Lynn Konizer and her husband Edward. He will also be missed by a host of friends and his faithful dog, "Junior."

Family and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday, July 25th, 12:00 Noon at St. Ann's Church, 2013 Gilpin Ave. Wilmington. There will be no prior calling hours. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Archmere Academy, 3600 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703 or to St. Edmond's Academy, 2120 Veale Rd. Wilmington, DE 19810.

Rev. John A. Beattie, OSFS

Rev. John A. Beattie, 70 a Wilmington native and priest with the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales, died in his sleep on Friday, August 8, 2008, at the Oblate faculty house of Bishop Verot High School in Ft. Myers, FL, where he had been working for nearly 25 years as a teacher, coach and administrator.

Fr. Beattie entered the seminary of the Oblates of St. Francis de Sales in 1955 after his graduation from Salesianum School in Wilmington, DE. He completed his studies in theology and a Master's Degree in English before his ordination to the priesthood in 1965. Prior to his ministry at Bishop Verot, Fr. Beattie served as a teacher, religious superior and seminary leader in schools and communities in Pennsylvania. He also directed Camp Brisson in Northeast, MD.

Fr. Beattie is survived by his twin brother, Rev. Joseph Beattie, OSFS; his sisters, Mrs. Anne Beattie Mundy and Sr. Mary Alfred, OSC; and his brother-in-law, Ed Mazurkiewicz. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Katherine Mundy, Mary Winkler, Margaret Buff and John, Joseph and Edward Mazurkiewicz. Fr. Beattie was predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Mary Katherine (Flynn) Beattie; and his sister, Cecilia Mazurkiewicz.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Our Lady of Light Catholic Church in Florida. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 9th & DuPont Sts., Wilmington on Thursday, August 14, at 10 am. A viewing will precede the Mass at 9 am. Interment will be in the Oblates Cemetery, Childs, MD at 12 noon.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Fr. John Beattie are requested to the Oblates of St. Francis deSales, 2200 Kentmere Parkway, Wilmington, DE 19806.

James J. Barthelmes

April 7, 1925 - September 10, 2008

James J. Barthelmes, 83, died Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at his home in Palm Bay, FL.

Born in Darby, he was a graduate of Darby High School. He has resided in Palm Bay for the past 20 years and was a former resident of Chadds Ford and Collingdale. Mr. Barthelmes was a retired Truck Driver who was very proud of his award for driving over a million miles without a single accident. He served in the Army during WWII.

He was predeceased by his wife Norma Lee Cordrey Barthelmes and is survived by his son George E. Gabert of Wilmington, DE, 2 grandchildren Andrew Gabert of Elkton, MD and Colleen Sigle of Wilmington, 1 great grandson Kohen Sigle and 7 nieces and nephews.

The Funeral Service will be at 11 am at MARVIL FUNERAL HOME, 1110 Main St. Darby, PA where friends may call after 10 am Wednesday, September 17, 2008. Burial will be in Arlington Cemetery.

Richard E. Crozier

Age 89 of Wilmington, DE passed away on September 12, 2008.

Mr. Crozier was employed as a machinist with the Pennsylvania Railroad with 41 years of service before retiring. He served his country in the U.S. Navy Air Corp during WWII. He was a lifelong member of the Richardson Park United Methodist Church as well as Armstrong Lodge # 26 A.F.& A.M. where he also served in other Masonic bodies.

Mr. Crozier was preceded in death by his son, Richard F. Crozier in 1998. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Alvretta Crozier; his daughter, Cherie C. Krebs and her husband Elmer; daughter in-law, Gail T. Crozier; brother, Ralph A. Crozier and his wife Peg, all of Wilm.; sister, Clara C. Cloud of Greenville, NC; brother and sister in-law, Sheldon and Nancy Edwards of Wilm.; 4 grandchildren, R. Brian Crozier, Tracy C. Gamble and her husband Robert, Jennifer C. Krebs, Kelly A. Krebs; and 2 great grandchildren, Brandon Gamble and Logan Krebs.

A viewing will be held on Monday, September 15 from 6-8 pm in the MCCRERY MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 3710 Kirkwood Highway and Duncan Rd. A Masonic service will take place at 7 pm. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 16 at 11 am in the Richardson Park U.M. Church, 11 N. Maryland Ave., Wilmington, DE 19804. Burial will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, N. Dupont Highway, New Castle.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the church.

Joseph P. Daemer, Jr.

Mr. Joseph P. Daemer, Jr., age 93, of New Castle, DE died on Friday, September 12, 2008, at his home.

Mr. Daemer was born in Mays Landing, NJ on April 2, 1915, son of the late Joseph P. Daemer, Sr. and Ellen (McGeary) Daemer. A professional driver and member of Teamsters Local #326 in New Castle, he was employed for 28 years with the former Anchor Motor Freight in Wilmington. He attended Asbury United Methodist Church and was an active member of Howard J. Weston Senior Center, where he looked forward to playing cards with his many friends there. Mr. Daemer liked being close to the water and greatly enjoyed boating, fishing and crabbing. He also enjoyed traveling with his family throughout his life. He was well known for his wonderful sense of humor; when asked how he was feeling, he would jokingly respond that he was "just 'turrible.'"

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Marie F. (Bradford) Hollyday Daemer, and a stepdaughter, Chris McKelvey. He is survived by 3 children, Joseph T. Daemer and wife, Helen, of Northeast, MD; Denyse Diggins of Jacksonville, FL; and Fred C. Daemer and wife, Maryann, of Wilmington, DE; 3 stepchildren, Edward T. Hollyday III and wife, Debbie, of New Castle, DE; Patricia A. Hollyday and husband, Glen, of Clyde, TX; and Pamela J. Ingram and husband, Tim, of New Castle, DE; brother, John J. Daemer of Sebastian, FL; sister, Mary Rowan of Bakersfield, CA; 14 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and 6 great great grandchildren.

The family extends their heartfelt thanks to caregiver Irene Saah for her many kindnesses to Mr. Daemer during his illness.

A funeral service will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, September 17, 2008, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where visitation will begin at 9:30 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Howard J. Weston Senior Center, 1 Bassett Avenue, New Castle, DE 19720.

George William Davis, Jr.

George William Davis, Jr., age 66, of Millsboro, DE formerly of Pennsylvania passed away on Friday, September 12, 2008 at the Delaware Hospice Center in Milford, DE.

Mr. Davis was a veteran of Korea serving in the United States Army. He worked for Conrail-Norfolk Southern for 30 years as a railroad policeman before retiring in 2006. George was an active member of St. George's Chapel Church in Harbeson where he started a men's group.

He is survived by his loving wife Gale Davis; 8 children, George William Davis, III, Russell Davis, Scott Davis, Christopher Meyers, Kathleen Clemens, Lisa Frey, Frazier Lay and Scott Lay; and 18 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, September 16, at St. George's Chapel, 20322 Beaver Dam Rd. (Rt. 23), Harbeson, DE 19951. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions in George's name to the Delaware Hospice Center, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963 or St. George's Chapel.
