Suzanne Fortna Aikman

Age 78, of Hockessin, DE, passed away peacefully on the morning of Wednesday September 17, 2008.

Sue was born in Harrisburg in 1929, the daughter of the late William Henry Fortna and Gladys Waite Fortna. She was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Everett M. Aikman, Jr. in 2005. Mrs. Aikman was a graduate of P.S. duPont High School in Wilmington, and Wilson College in Chambersburg, PA. She was well loved by an extended family and friends.

She is survived by her son, E. Malcolm Aikman, III and her grandchildren, Kristin M. Aikman and Tyler M. Aikman.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Monday September 22, 2008 at Limestone Presbyterian Church, 3201 Limestone Road, Wilmington where family and friends may call from 10 am to noon. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Delaware Humane Association, 701 A Street, Wilmington, DE 19801 or Limestone Presbyterian Church, 3201 Limestone Rd., Wilmington, DE 19808.

Alison Teresa Ash

Alison Teresa Ash, 28, died peacefully in her sleep Tuesday, September 16, 2008, at her home in Wilmington, DE. Her pug, Jack, was with her.

Born October 4, 1979, in Belleflower, CA, she was the much loved daughter of Thomas F. Ash Jr. of Baltimore, MD, and Louise Ash and Todd V. Clark, of Newark, DE. Alison attended elementary, middle and high schools in Snow Hill on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, where she and her family had moved when she was 2 years old. She graduated from Wicomico High School in 1997. In 2001 Alison graduated with a bachelor of science degree in criminal justice from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore in Princess Anne, Md., where she was a member of Alpha Phi Sigma, The National Criminal Justice Honor Society, Gamma Omicron Chapter. She earned a paralegal certificate from Delaware Technical & Community College in November 2001. She was a compliance specialist at AIG Federal Savings Bank in Wilmington, DE. She previously had worked as a legal assistant and as a paralegal for several law firms including Duane Morris LLC; Tighe Cottrell & Logan, P.A.; and Cooch and Taylor, all in Wilmington. "Ali," as her friends and family knew her, was the best daughter any parent could have, an outgoing, vivacious young woman. She was a loyal friend to many who relied on her for her compassion, common sense and inner strength. Her friends will always remember her wit and ability to make them laugh no matter how sad or upset they were. She loved having her own house and her neighbors on East 13th Street, where she walked Jack daily. She was an avid Washington Redskins fan just like her family and especially her grandfather, Albert T. Krehely, Sr., of Berlin, Md., who predeceased her in 2004. She also enjoyed playing softball with her friends and coworkers and their team finally made it into the finals this year.

In addition to her parents, she is survived by her grandmother Josephine T. Krehely of Berlin, MD; brother, Michael, and his wife, Stephanie, and their daughter, Madyson Ruby Ash of Clearwater, FL; sister, Amber Valenzuela and her husband Gustavo, and their sons Cruz and Rio of Baltimore, MD; her aunts, Marie Velong of Berlin and her daughter, Gina, also of Berlin, and son, Alex and his wife Toni, their daughters, Hailey and Sierra of Boynton Beach, FL; Susan Hughes of Snow Hill and her son, Luke and daughter, Tess; Shirley Alessi of Towson, MD, and her sons, David and Michael; Joann Kidwell and her husband Donald of Dundalk, MD; uncles, Albert T. Krehely Jr. of Riviera Beach, MD, his wife, Vanessa and their children, Shannon, Hannah and Zachary; and James Krehely of Greenbelt, MD, and his close companion Erma Howard, of Laurel, MD; and many dear friends and other relatives who will miss her greatly.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1 pm Saturday, September 20, 2008, at St. Francis de Sales Church, 413 Wicomico Street, Salisbury, MD, with visitation at the church one hour before. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Berlin, MD. Arrangements are by BURBAGE FUNERAL HOME, Berlin, MD.

Jerry Cullen

Age 69, of Claymont, DE, passed away peacefully at home on September 17, 2008, with his family after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Tarrytown, NY, he was the son of the late George W. and Helena Walker Cullen. Jerry was a specialized bricklayer and owner and president of Cullen Refractories. He was a member of Bricklayer and Allied Craftsmen Local #1, PA/DE and was a veteran of the Delaware National Guard. Jerry's caring and sharing spirit will be long remembered by his family and friends. He shared his lifelong passion for nature with everyone he knew.

Jerry is survived by his daughters, Constance C. Shultz (Chris) of Newark, DE, Patricia A. Tompkins (J.R.) of Wilmington and Catherine M. Cullen of San Diego, CA; grandchildren, Sabrina and Zane Shultz, Scott and Anna Schmidt and Francis and Jordan Cullen; siblings, George W. Cullen of Wilmington, DE, twin sister, Geraldine C. Romito (Virgil) of Ocean View, DE, and Patricia C. Okoniewski (Francis) of Wilmington, DE. He was preceded in death by his infant son Gerald W. Cullen, Jr.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the visitation on Monday September 22, from 6-8 with celebration of his life at 7 pm, at Gebhart Funeral Home, 3401 Philadelphia Pike, Claymont, DE 19703. Interment private.

Memorial contributions may be made to: Delaware Chapter of the March of Dimes, 236 C N James St., Newport, DE 19804.

William P. Davis, Jr.

Age 84, of Bellefonte passed away at home on Wednesday, September 17, 2008.

Bill was born in Wilmington to the late William P. and Isabel (Sparks) Davis. He was retired from ABEX Steel Co. and loved to build things. Along with his parents he is preceded in death by his first wife Marjorie Davis, and a daughter, Gloria Balbach.

Bill is survived by his wife, Julia Cecelia (Smith) Davis; 3 children, Diane Maxwell, Thomas Davis (Chris), and Tina Champagne (Tom); 5 step children, John Williams (Melanie), David Williams (Marlene), Mary Jo Hoon (Joe), Sheila Edwards (Haywood), and Jim Williams (Linda); son-in-law, Joe Balbach; sister, Marion Moore; 18 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to attend a funeral service at 11 am on Saturday, September 20, 2008 at Gracelawn Memorial Park Chapel, 2220 S. Dupont Hwy, New Castle, DE. Viewing will be held from 10-11 am in the Chapel. Interment will follow in the adjoining cemetery.

Walter F. Abath

Age 77 passed away suddenly on the sunny afternoon of Thursday September 18, 2008. His final moments were spent at the Academy of Lifelong Learning, where he enjoyed the enrichment of mind and spirit for over fifteen years.

Born and raised in New York City, he held masters degrees in engineering from both Columbia University and Carnegie-Mellon. He retired in 1992, after forty one years with DuPont. An avid philatelist, Walter also enjoyed traveling extensively with his wife Madeline, and cherished family time above all.

Walter is survived by his wife Madeline; their children, Mary Sosnowski and Kathy Buterbaugh of Wilmington, DE, Jim and wife Cindy of Royal Palm Beach, FL, Rick and wife Diana of Brattleboro, VT; ten and one third grandchildren, and one great granddaughter.

The family would like to thank Dr. Michael Polnerow and Arlene Giordano for their extraordinary care and compassion.

Friends and family are invited for visitation on Monday, September 22, from 6-8pm at MEALEY FUNERAL HOME, Limestone and Milltown Roads, Wilmington. Funeral services will be held at St. John the Beloved Church, 907 Milltown Road on Tuesday September 23 at 10 am. Interment will follow at All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington.

Homer H. Bramble, Jr.

Homer H. Bramble, Jr age 85, of Seaford, DE died on Friday, September 19, 2008 at Life Care at Lofland Park in Seaford.

Homer was born in Seaford, DE on April 5, 1923, the son of the late Homer H. Bramble, Sr. and Lola Meredith Bramble of Seaford. Mr. Bramble retired from the Delaware State Police Force as a Lieutenant in 1967 after 20 years of service. He was an Army Air Corp veteran of WWII, serving in India and China. He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Seaford, Hiram Masonic Lodge #21 in Seaford and the Civil War Round Table. His enjoyments in life were spending time with his family telling stories, gardening, civil war history, family genealogy and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Vera Holland Bramble; a daughter, Renee Hammond and her husband Ray of Seaford; 3 sons, Barry B. Bramble and his wife Judith of Cinnaminson, NJ, Robert Bramble and his wife Francine of Glen Allen, VA and James Bramble and his wife Sharon of Newport News, VA; 14 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren also survive Homer.

Memorial Services with State Police Honors will be on Tuesday, September 23, at 2 pm at the CRANSTON FUNERAL HOME, 300 N. Shipley St., Seaford, where friends may call from 1-2 pm. Burial will be in St. Luke's Episcopal Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations may be made to St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 202 North St, Seaford, DE 19973.

C. Emily Burton

C. Emily Burton, age 93, of Lewes, DE passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. Burton was born on January 17, 1915, daughter of the late George Washington and Clara (Messick) Coverdale. Emily was a homemaker who was deeply devoted to her family and friends, and well known for her sense of humor and her direct manner. She was a member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Lewes for over 50 years serving as a Sunday school teacher, member of the choir, and member of the altar guild. Mrs. Burton was also an avid supporter of the Lewes Senior Center, Lewes Historical Society, Beebe Hospital, Lewes Lions Club, the Lewes Library. She was an honorary lifetime member of the Lewes Yacht Club. Emily enjoyed painting, knitting, crocheting, sailing and going to the beach.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Perry T. Burton in 1972, an infant child, and three sisters: Lillian C. Straw, Marion White and Helena Macintire. She is survived by a son Leslie L. Burton of Sarasota, FL; a daughter Carol M. Katz of Lewes, DE; 2 granddaughters Tracy (Katz) Evans and Blythe Burton-Teed both of Lewes; a great granddaughter Kelsey Evans of Lewes and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Monday September 22, 2008 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 2nd Street and Market Street in Lewes, DE where friends and family may call after 11 am at the church. Interment will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery in Lewes.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions in Emily's name to St. Peter's Church Sunday School Program, P.O. Box 464, Lewes, DE 19958. Arrangements by MELSON FUNERAL SERVICES, Millsboro, DE.

Elaine B. Collins

Elaine, age 91 of Bear, DE passed away peacefully on September 12, 2008 following a brief illness.

Elaine was born in Wilmington on January 14, 1917 to the late J. Harry and Margaret (Fortune) Beckerle. She worked for the DuPont Co. before her marriage to the late Robert D. Collins. She enjoyed life, people and a private babysitting career. She was also preceded in death by her brother J. Harry Jr. and sisters Fran Adams and Jean Beckerle.

She will be dearly missed by her son, R. Douglas and his wife Leslie with whom she lived, and their children, Lisa Stephenson and her husband Rob, Rob Collins, John Collins and his wife Kelly and Mark Collins; and her 5 great grandchildren; also her daughters, Kay Tepper, her 2 children and Nancy Collins. There are so many people who loved and will miss Mom Mom.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday September 27, 2008 at 11 am in the chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle, where friends may call at 10 am. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, 1501 Casho Mill Rd, Newark, DE 19711.
