Johnny P. Johnston
Decorated Vietnam Veteran
Mr. Johnny P. Johnston, age 60, of Port Penn, DE, died on Tuesday, August 22, 2006, at his home, surrounded by his beloved family.
Mr. Johns-ton was born September 19, 1945 in Glendale, CA, son of the late Benice Johnston and Nellie Carter Johnston. A highly decorated US Army veteran of the Vietnam War, he first served with the 2nd Armored Division at Fort Hood, TX. During his tour of combat duty from 1967-1968 in Vietnam, he was attached to both the 1st Airmobile Cavalry and the 173rd Airborne Brigade. For his valiant service as an infantryman and forward observer, Mr. Johnston was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge, 2 Bronze Stars for Valor, the Bronze Star for Meritorious Service, the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in defense of his country, 2 Air Medals for Combat Assaults, the Vietnamese Award for Gallantry, the Army Commendation Award, the Vietnamese Campaign Ribbon, the Southeast Asian Service Ribbon and the National Defense Ribbon.
In civilian life, Mr. Johnston was a chemical operator by profession, working for Ciba-Geigy in Newport for 20 years until his retirement in 2002. He had also been employed with the DuPont Company and General Motors. Active in his community, Mr. Johnston was a volunteer firefighter with the Port Penn Fire Company at Station 29. He served as a member of the Fire Police for 10 years, where he was known to colleagues as "Papa J." He was also a member of the VFW for several years, the 1/50th Infantry Association, the Police Rod and Gun Club in New Castle, and the Delaware City Recreation Club. Mr. Johnston was an avid racing fan throughout his life and especially enjoyed drag racing and NASCAR. As a young man, he worked for Howards Racing Cams in southern CA. It was when he came east to assist in the fabrication of a dragster that he met his future wife, Sandra, and decided to make his home with her in DE.
He is surived by his beloved wife of 40 years, Sandra M. Neidlein Johnston; their 2 children, Jessica Brown, and her husband, William, of Middletown, and Sean Johnston, and his wife, Julia, of Middletown; 6 grandchildren, Sean Jr., Jason, Ashley, Casey, William and Alexa; and mother- and father-in-law, Evelyn and Vernon Neidlein, of Holiday, FL.
Friends may call from 6-8 pm on Sunday, August 27, 2006, at the SPICER-MULLIKIN FUNERAL HOME, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Monday, August 28, 2006, at the funeral home. Interment with military honors will follow in the Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.

Edward A. Madanat, Sr.
Mr. Edward A. Madanat, Sr., age 78, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on Thursday morning, August 22, 2006.
Mr. Madanat was born in Kerak, Jordan on June 3, 1928, and served in the Royal Jordanian Army as a young man. He came to the United States of America in the early 1950s, graduated from Wilmington High School in 1953, and attended business college. A veteran of the United States Army, he served his new country during the Korean Conflict and was stationed in Germany. After completing his tour of duty, Mr. Madanat was granted citizenship and began his working career in DE. His brother, Adeeb Madanat, was a schoolteacher and the first of the family to come to America, bringing his 2 brothers and their mother to this country. Mr. Madanat worked with Gilpin Associates in Wilmington before accepting a position with Frank Acierno and the late Albert Marta as property manager at Park Place Apartments in 1965. The properties expanded to include Brookside Apartments and Chestnut Hill Shopping Center. Prior to his leaving, he took part in the early stages of the Christiana Mall. He also built the Pike Creek Professional Center behind the Pike Creek Shopping Center. Mr. Madanat went on to start his own business, U.S. International, which exported medical supplies internationally. He had the honor of flying aboard the Concorde while conducting business for U.S. International. While he was very proud of his accomplishments, his pride and joy were his sons and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Sarah F. (Young) Madanat, in 2002; and his brothers, Shawkat Madanat, in 1970, and Adeeb Madanat, in 1978. Mr. Madanat is survived by his sons, Edward A. Madanat, Jr., and his wife, Tina, Robert F. Madanat, and his wife, Sammi, and Thomas J. Madanat, and his wife, Lori; and his grandchildren, Joseph, Andrew, Zachary, T.J. and Abbi.
Family and friends may call at the DOHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 3200 Limestone Road, Pike Creek, on Thursday evening, August 24, from 6-8 pm. A private funeral service for Mr. Madanat's family will be held at the Delaware Veterans' Memorial cemetery on Friday morning, August 25.

Age 45 of Barclay, MD died August 19, 2006 at Bayhealth Kent General Hospital. Service Sunday, August 27, 2006 at 3 PM at Community Baptist Church, Barclay Rd, Barclay, MD. Burial in Mt. Zion cemetery, Marydel, MD.
Robert A. Roux
Robert Roux, age 55, died August 24, 2006, at the Crozer-Chester Medical Center, in Upland, PA.
Born in Darby, PA, he lived in Upper Chichester for 20 years. He was a graduate of Chester High School, and worked for Amtrak as a locomotive engineer for 35 years. Mr. Roux was Past Worshipful Master of Chester Lodge #236 and Penn Lodge #709, and Past Grand Tall Cedar of Penn #21.
Son of the late Alexander and Evelyn Keisel Roux; and brother of the late Donald Roux, he is survived by his wife, Alberta Kates Roux; 2 daughters, Karen Canning, of Aston, PA, and Danielle Dransfield, of West Chester, PA; 2 brothers, David Roux, of Lewes, DE, and George Arscott, of Easton, MD; 2 sisters, Bonnie Hansen, of Lewes, DE, and Lisa Gaskill, of Lincoln, DE; and 3 grandchildren.
There will be visitation from 6-9 pm on Sunday, August 27, and after 10 am on Monday, August 28, at the JAMES M. BROWER FUNERAL HOME, 908 S. Providence Rd. (Rts. 320 & 252), Wallingford, PA, where the funeral service will begin at 11 am on Monday. Entombment will be in Lawn Croft cemetery in Linwood, PA.

Jane Elizabeth Macrum
Jane Elizabeth Macrum, age 97, died August 3, 2006, at Cokesbury Village, in Hockessin DE, after a brief illness.
She was a graduate of Westminster College, in New Wilmington, PA, and later received a master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh. She taught high school chemistry and was a school principal in Indiana County, PA. In 1943, she moved with her mother to Wilmington DE. Ms. Macrum was employed as a research chemist in the Pigments and Patents Departments of DuPont until her retirement in 1975. She then started a small business, making dresses for little girls - these were marketed at Wanamakers under the label "Janietogs". Ms. Macrum was a faithful and active member of First and Central Presbyterian Church for over 60 years. After Jane's mother died in 1978, she traveled extensively with friends and family to many parts of the world. She took up residence in Cokesbury Village in 1988.
Jane Macrum is survived by nephews, Samuel Harry Macrum, of Frederick MD, and James Junior Walter, of Hamburg AR; nieces, Margaret Ann Macrum Witt, of Connellsville PA, and Edythe Walter Smeltz, of Hockessin DE; and many grand- and great-grandnieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Jacob and Clara Edith Messenger Macrum; and by siblings, Samuel Harry, James Herbert and Mary Edith Macrum Walter.
A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Friday, August 18, in the chapel at Cokesbury Village, 726 Loveville Rd., Hockessin, DE. Any friends or acquaintances of Martha Jane Elizabeth Macrum are welcome to attend.

Elisabeth "Lisa" Ann Reece
Lisa Reece, of Wilmington, DE, passed away suddenly on July 31, 2006 at the Christiana Hospital.
Born in Bryn Mawr, PA, Lisa was a graduate of Haverford High School, Class of 1980, Bryn Mawr Hospital in Pennsylvania, and the Medical College of Virginia, Richmond, VA. Lisa chose her career path because she was loving and caring and felt a need to help and comfort those in time of need. She had worked at the Hershey Medical Center, Hershey, PA, UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco, CA, Stanford University, Stanford, CA, Christiana Hospital in Christiana, DE and was presently employed in the Cancer Center at Paoli Hospital in Paoli, PA. Lisa was a loving wife and mother who enjoyed all activities involving her sons and husband, and family. She was an active teacher at the Cedars Church of Christ and home Bible studies, a camper and volunteer staff member at Camp Manatawny since childhood, an excellent cook, mother, and wife, a caring and loving Christian woman, and devoted servant to senior members.
She is survived by her husband of 19 years, Robert Reece; her sons, Carlton, 15, and Montana, 11; her parents, Richard T. Baker and Virginia Baker of Tulsa, OK; 2 sisters, Debbie Anderson and husband, Steve, and their son, Jeremy Anderson and wife, Emily, and their daughter, April, all from Tulsa, OK, and sister, Rebecca Baker, of Havertown, PA.
A memorial service will be held at the Cedars Church of Christ, 511 Greenbank Road, Wilmington, DE on Friday, August 4, 2006, at 11 am.

Richard L. Bland, Sr. "Whitey"
Of Smyrna, DE, died Friday, August 11, 2006, surrounded by his loving family at Westminster Village Health Care in Dover, DE. He was 75.
Mr. Bland was born April 16, 1931 in Takoma Park, MD, the son of the late Jesse Bland Sr. and Beulah Starkey Bland. Mr. Bland retired from General Motors in Wilmington in 1986, after 32 years. After retiring from General Motors, Whitey then started M&R Pots with his wife, Mildred, and continued to work for the business until his death. Mr. Bland also coached Little League Baseball in the Smyrna-Clayton area during the 1960s. Whitey was a founding member of the Early Birds chapter of the NCHA. He belonged to the Chester County, PA Snowmobile Club and First State Travelers. Whitey loved this country and enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and traveled from shore to shore and border to border. The only state that he did not visit was Hawaii, because he could not get there in his motor home. Whitey was a people person and enjoyed meeting people and he made friends everywhere he went.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Jesse Bland, Jr.; and a sister, Barbara Timmons. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Mildred Bland; 2 sons, Richard Bland, Jr. and his wife, Kathy, of Smyrna, DE and Gary Bland and his fiancée, Cindy Wilson; 2 daughters, Sharon Davis and her husband, LeRoy, of Clayton, DE and Wanda Atkinson and her husband, Alvin, Jr. of Smyrna, DE; a brother, George Bland and his wife, Eleanor, of Denver, CO; 9 grandchildren, Leslie Bland, Stacy Breitenbach, Richard Bland, III, Alvin Atkinson, III, Wendy Gleasner, Tiffany Bland, Michelle Atkinson, Gary L. Bland, Jr. and Audrey Atkinson; and 1 great grandchildren.
A viewing will be held Wednesday from 7-9 pm at Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 S. Main St., Smyrna, DE. A service will be held Thursday, August 17, 2006, at 11 am at the funeral home where friends may call 1 hour prior. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.

Jean Annabelle (Skinner) Dorrell
Of New Castle, DE, age 77, passed away Friday, August 18, 2006, at Christiana Hospital.
Born in Apollo, PA, she was the daughter of the late George and Elizabeth (Miller) Skinner. She graduated from Penns Grove Regional High School, Penns Grove, NJ, Class of 1946. Jean retired from the DuPont Co., where she had been employed in the legal department as a secretary. During her leisure time, she enjoyed shopping for antiques, many are displayed in her home. Jean was also very active in her Scottish heritage.
She is survived by her daughter, Jeanine I. Dorrell of New Castle, DE; sons, Gene Skinner Dorrell of Virginia Beach, VA, Jay Evans Dorrell and his wife, Carla, of South Lion, MI and Eugene Drew Dorrell of Phoenix, AZ; sister, Lois Burgess of Middletown, DE; 11 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 22, 2006, at 11 am at the Gebhart Funeral Home, 531 Delaware St., New Castle, DE, where friends may visit with the family Tuesday morning from 10-11 am. Burial will be in the Glebe cemetery, New Castle, DE.
