George M. Von Goerres

Age 82, of Harrington, DE, died Thursday, July 6, 2006, at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover.

He was born in Harrington, DE, the son of the late Hubert and Florence (Johnson) Von Goerres. Mr. Von Goerres graduated from Harrington High School in 1941. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II where he was assigned to the 712 Military Police Battalion. After his military service, Mr. Von Goerres worked for the Red Star Trailways Motor Coaches, Inc. as a bus driver from 1946-1948. In 1948, he was hired by the Diamond State Telephone Company where he worked for 41 years before retiring in 1989. In 1970, Mr. Von Goerres received the Diamond State Telephone Company Good Neighbor Award, honoring dedicated telephone company employees for community service. Mr. Von Goerres was a member of Temple Lodge #9 AF&AM, Milford, and was a Life Member of the Harrington Volunteer Fire Company, where he served for 59 years. He was a past recording secretary and past president for the Harrington Volunteer Fire Company and was awarded the American National Red Cross Award for Humanity for Volunteer First Aid Life Saving Service. Mr. Von Goerres was one of the original Harrington Volunteer Fire Company Ambulance crew members and he taught First Aid as a certified Red Cross Instructor to many of the original Delaware Volunteer Ambulance Crews along with his brother, Herbert G. Von Goerres, Jr.

George was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Ena Evans Von Goerres, in 2003; and his brother, Herbert G. Von Goerres, on March 2006. He is survived by 2 daughters, Beverly E. Von Goerres, of Newark and Beth E. Von Goerres Hudson and her husband, Jeff, of Harrington; a son, Bruce E. Von Goerres and his wife, Cindy, of Felton; 5 grandchildren, Rachael Hudson, Jeffery Colby Hudson, Joel Hudson, Adam Hudson and Ashley Hudson; a sister and brother-in-law, Jeanette (Von Goerres) Legates and her husband, Russell, of Harrington; a sister-in-law, Evelon (Rust) Von Goerres, of Georgetown; and 2 nephews, Herbert E. Von Goerres and his wife, Marcy, of Lewes and David R. Von Goerres Legates, of Middletown.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Thursday, July 13, 2006, at the Harrington Volunteer Fire Company, 20 Clark Street, Harrington, DE 19952, where friends may call after 10 am. A viewing will be held at the Harrington Volunteer Fire Company on Wednesday evening, July 12, 2006, from 6-9 pm. Burial with Firefighters Honors will be in Hollywood cemetery, Milford-Harrington Highway, Harrington, DE.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to be made to either the Harrington Volunteer Fire Company; or to The Delaware State Police Museum, Inc. 1425 North Dupont Highway, PO Box 430, Dover, DE 19903.

Gail Green Williams

Age 46 of Wilmington, DE, died Sunday, June 18, 2006, at St. Francis Hospital.

Mrs. Williams is survived by her 3 children, Latisha Green, Yvette and Billy Dee Williams; 6 grandchildren; other relatives and friends; 2 sisters, Doretha Adams and Lori Green; and 2 brothers, Jimmy and Ernest Green.

Graveside service 11 am on Friday, June 30, 2006, in Silverbrook cemetery, 3300 Lancaster Ave., Wilmington, DE. There will be no viewing.

Russell Lee Finley

Russell Lee Finley, age 77, of Rising Sun, MD, passed away on Sunday, July 2, 2006, at Christiana Hospital, in Newark, DE.

He was born May 22, 1929 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Carter Hickling and Netta Lorraine Finley. Russell Finley was both a gifted and a prolific artist, having painted over 500 portraits of men, women and children, with more than 3 thousand of all types of paintings being in various collections, both in this country and abroad. He was the world's greatest husband, father and artist.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne Finley, of Rising Sun, MD; sons, Patrick C. Finley, and his wife, Natalie, of Rising Sun, MD, Thayne E. Finley, and his wife, Stephanie, of Port Deposit, MD, and Kyle Lee Finley, and his wife, Kelly, of Newark, DE; grandson, Jack Lee Finley, of Newark, DE.; and niece, Linda Golden, of Austin, TX.

Family and friends may call from 7-9 pm on Thursday, July 6, 2006, at the R.T. Foard Funeral Home, P.A., 111 S. Queen Street, Rising Sun, MD.

The funeral service will be at 11 am on Friday, July 7, 2006, at West Nottingham Church, 1195 Firetower Rd., Colora, MD. Burial will be in West Nottingham cemetery, in Colora, MD.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to support the arts.

John B. Minker, Jr. "Buck"

John B. Minker, Jr., "Buck", age 79, of Wilmington, DE, went home to be with his Lord and Savior July 2, 2006.

He retired in 1985 after 37 years of loyal service at the DuPont Edgemoor plant, in Wilmington, DE. He was a member of the Newport Armstrong Lodge #26 AF&AM, and the New Castle Moose Lodge.

John is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Helen Minker; his sons, John B. Minker, III, and his wife, Claudia, and Gary F. Minker, and his wife, Linda; his sister, Blanche Humphry; 7 grandchildren; and a great grandchild on the way. Not to be forgotten is his special buddy, Ginger.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service at the DOHERTY FUNERAL HOME, 3200 Limestone Rd., Pike Creek, on Friday, July 7th, at 11:30 am, where friends may visit after 10 am. Burial will be in All Saints cemetery.

Charles S. Ross

Charles S. Ross, age 89, died on Friday, June 30, 2006, at Cokesbury Village, in Hockessin, DE.

He was born November 29, 1916 to Olie Jackson Ross and Esther Savage Ross, and grew up on the eastern shore of VA, graduating Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Virginia in 1938. During World War II, Mr. Ross served in the Army Signal Corps. He trained at Fort Monmouth, NJ, where he met his wife, Doris "Tommy" Middleditch, at USO dance, and then served in New Guinea, the Philippines and Japan. After the war, Mr. Ross resumed his DuPont career, in Wilmington, in the treasurer's department, where he specialized in credit and finance. From 1966-1969, he was treasurer of DuPont Mexico, in Mexico City. After returning to Wilmington, he was director of human relations for the treasurer's department. In the last year before his retirement in 1980, he headed up a special project to promote affirmative action.

Mr. Ross was a longtime active member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church. He also served as treasurer of the Delaware Symphony, on the board of the Ingleside Retirement Home, and for many years was an active supported of Neighborhood House, where he served as a board member and board chairman. A resident of Cokesbury Village since 1994, he was active in writing for the Cokesbury Courier, and served on the grounds and horticultural committee. He was devoted to his family and friends, and had almost never been known to turn down an invitation to go fishing, play tennis, or go sailing.

He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Doris "Tommy" Ross; 3 children, and their spouses, C. Randolph and JoAnne Ross, of Cherry Hill, NJ, Susan and John Roberts, of Edisto Island, SC, and Donald Ross and Joyce Hawes, of Waltham, VT; 8 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Anne Hurtt Snead, of Richmond, VA, and Margaret T. Byrd, of Wilmington, NC; a brother, Warner Ross, of New Haven, CT; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family and friends are invited to a memorial service at 3 pm on Saturday, July 8, at Cokesbury Village Chapel, 726 Loveville Rd., Hockessin, DE 19707-1515.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to to the Cokesbury Health Center Revitalization Project; or to the Neighborhood House, 1218 B St., Wilmington, DE 19801.

Peter J. Sapala

Mr. Peter J. Sapala, age 75, of New Castle, DE, died on Sunday, July 2, 2006, at his son's homem in Newark.

Mr. Sapala was born June 30, 1931 in McAdoo, PA, son of the late Mary and Joseph Sapala. A barber by profession, he was employed for many years at the New Castle Farmers Market. He had also worked in security at the DuPont Company for 15 years during the 70s and 80s. Mr. Sapala was a parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church and a member of Moose Lodge #1578, both in New Castle. A gifted athlete from his youth, he was drafted by the Dodgers when the team was based in Brooklyn, NY. He remained an avid sports fan - especially of baseball - throughout his life.

His beloved wife of 45 years, Veronica L. Skokoski Sapala, passed away February 6, 2006. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Caroline Edwards. He is survived by his son, Thomas W. Sapala, and his wife, Michelle, of Newark; daughter, Judi C. O'Sheil, and her husband, Tracy, of Mesa, AZ; and 2 grandsons, Cade Sapala and Bryce Sapala.

Friends may call from 9:30-11 am on Friday, July 7, 2006, at the SPICER-MULLIKIN FUNERAL HOME, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30 am at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, 801 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. Interment will be in All Saints cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington.

Anna M. Shurr

Anna M. Shurr, age 74, of Newark, DE, died peacefully on Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at Christiana Hospital after a courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).

Born in Cincinnati, OH on April 19, 1932, Mrs. Shurr was a daughter of the late LeRoy Mathews and Anna Bodenstein Mathews. She was a talented homemaker and had also worked for Westvaco in Newark. Mrs. Shurr greatly enjoyed bargain and coupon shopping, planting flowers around her home, and trips to Atlantic City's Hilton Casino.

Her husband, Peter E. Shurr, Jr., died in 1997. She is survived by 4 children, Peter E. Shurr, III and wife, Eileen, of Newark, DE, Sharon Mead and husband, Jerry, of Newark, DE, Eric Shurr and companion, Edith Walls, of New Castle, DE and Barbara Young and husband, Gary, of Guys Mills, PA; 5 siblings, James Mathews, Ronald Mathews and Eleanor Novakov, all of Cincinnati, OH, Herbert Mathews of Las Vegas, NV and LeRoy Mathews of KY; 8 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 11:45 am on Friday, July 7, 2006, at the SPICER-MULLIKIN FUNERAL HOME, 121 West Park Place, Newark, where friends may call after 10:45 am. Interment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.

Evelyn F. Washall (Kauffman)

Age 79, of Wilmington, DE, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 26, 2006, at her residence surrounded by her family.

Mrs. Washall was a homemaker and an excellent cook and baker. She enjoyed gardening, shopping and going to the slots at Delaware Park. As her health declined, she enjoyed working word puzzles and watching TV, especially Court TV and the Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles.

In addition to her parents, Joseph X. and Lovina Y. Kauffman, she was predeceased by her son, John W. Washall; and her sisters, Elizabeth Ferguson, Helen Marsteller and Mildred Campbell. She will be missed by her husband of 58 years, Thomas A. Washall, Sr.; her sons, Thomas A. Washall, Jr. and his wife, Kathleen, and Mark J. Washall and his wife, Patricia; 7 grandchildren; a great grandson; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 30th, at 11 am at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown Roads, Wilmington, where friends are invited to visitation after 10 am. Interment will follow in All Saints cemetery, Wilmington.
