Age 86, quietly went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 23, 2006, in the Wilmington Hospital.

Mother of Anthony Whitten and the late Willie. Sister of the late Charles C. Smith. Also survived by 1 grandson and a host of other family and friends.

Funeral 10 am on Saturday, July 1st, at CONGO FUNERAL HOME, 2317 N. Market St. Viewing from 9-10 am. Burial will be private.

Mary Elizabeth Hirst Wilkinson "Bette"

Age 80, of West Hollywood, FL, passed away Monday, June 26, 2006, after a short illness.

Born in Wilmington, DE to the late William and Bertha Hirst, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert (Skee) Wilkinson. She is survived by her 4 children, Kenneth Wilkinson, George Wilkinson, Linda McCracken, and Charles Wilkinson; 9 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 2 brothers, Ed Hirst and Jim Hirst.

Funeral service 12 noon Thursday, June 29, at First Baptist Church of West Hollywood, 1708 N. 60th Ave., Hollywood, FL. Burial Hollywood Memorial Gardens North.

Bernard T. Starkey, Jr.

Bernard T. Starkey, Jr., age 45, of Wilmington, DE, went home to be with the Lord June 29, 2006.

He leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Geraldine Starkey; 4 sisters; 7 aunts; 3 uncles; other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Bernard "Hookie" Starkey, Sr.

There will be a viewing at 10 am on Thursday, July 6, followed by the funeral service at 12 noon, at Mother Union AME Church, 701 E. 5th Street, Wilmington,DE.

Helen Talley Stevens

Helen Talley Stevens, age 84, of Chadds Ford, PA, died June 30, 2006.

Helen was born in Wilmington, DE to the late Walter and Elizabeth Gray Goodman. She was a 1939 graduate of Wilmington High School and a 1941 graduate of Goldey Beacom College. Helen had worked as an executive secretary for the DuPont Company.

In addition to her parents, her first husband, Peter E. Talley; her brothers, Harold and Ralph Goodman; and her sister, Ruth Straughn, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband of 23 years, Robert F. Stevens; 3 daughters, Dr. Lynn E. Talley, of Hockessin, DE, Robyn E. Talley, wife of Martin Pflieger, of Lititz, PA, and Jan A. Fols, of Kennett Square, PA; and 4 grandchildren, Ryan Fols, P. Matthew Bieber, and Peter and Lauren Talley.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial gathering on Sunday, July 9th, from 6-8 pm, at the MCCRERY MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 3924 Concord Pike, Talleyville (Rt. 202, south of Silverside Rd.).

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial contribution to your favorite charity.

Rev. Arcessa Marie Townsend

passed away July 1, 2006.

Arcessa "Cess" was born February 2, 1945 in Snow Hill, MD to Martha Collins and the late Hilton Collins.

Arcessa was preceded in death by her husband, Valice Townsend; 3 sisters; and 3 brothers. She leaves to cherish many wonderful and blessed memories her mother, Martha Collins; 2 daughters, Ethel Townsend and Angela Rayne; and 1 son, Stacey Collins (Robin); 2 devoted grandsons, Minister Jamarr and Jeremiah Rayne, whom she raised; 2 sisters, Addie Bivens and Esterine Washington; 3 brothers, Les-ter, Lawrence and Charles; 7 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and devoted friends.

A Homegoing service will be held at 7 pm on Friday, July 7, 2006, at the Cathedral of Fresh Fire, 2300 Northeast Blvd., Wilmington, DE, where a viewing will be held from 5-7 pm. Interment will be in Silverbrook cemetery.

Mabel Rachael Willon

Mrs. Mabel Rachael Willon, age 81, of New Castle, DE, died on Sunday, July 2, 2006, at her home.

Mrs. Willon, a homemaker, was born in Coatesville, PA, on February 7, 1925, daughter of the late Albert Gray and Mabel Meredith Gray.

Her husband, Ira S. Willon, died in 1989. She is survived by 3 daughters, Jean Grace Drummond of Bear; Joyce E. Jeuell of Landenberg, PA; and Gail Ann Stewart of New Castle; 3 brothers, Albert Gray of Newark; James Gray of Largo, FL; and Charles Gray of New Castle; sister, Frances Brothers of Louisville, KY; 5 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren.

The funeral service and interment will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Road, Wilmington, DE 19810.

Cpl. Cory Leonard Palmer

Age 21, of Seaford, DE, died on Saturday, May 6, 2006, while being transported back to the United States after suffering injuries in Iraq on May 1st.

Cpl. Palmer graduated from Seaford High School in 2002. He spent a semester at the University of West Virginia studying Computer Engineering before joining the Marines in February of 2003. He excelled in all of his military training and graduated from Sniper School, Advanced Sniper School, Jump School, Combatant Dive School and Special Survival Training School. This was his second tour of duty in Iraq, he was there from September 2004-April 2005 and returned in March of 2006 and was serving with the Marines' 2nd Recon Battalion, A Company 1st Platoon.

Cory is survived by his parents, Charles Edward and Danna Lou Swain Palmer of Seaford; 2 brothers, Thad Edward Palmer and Kyle Thomas Palmer; his grandparents, R. Byron and Phyllis O'Day Palmer, Kristina Massie Swain, all of Seaford. Other survivors include his aunts and uncles, Ralph B. and Beverly Mahan Palmer, Tommy Lynn Swain and Gary V. Layton, Montine Carey Swain and John C. Willin, Kristopher Ryan and Kimberly Spencer Swain, Murray Alicia Swain, Valerie Kristina and Randy Kerns, and Alison Marie and G. Blair Venables; great aunts and uncles, Margaret O'Day Givens, Ralph and Peggy O'Day, Jean O'Day, Virginia Maxfield Massie, Robert Onwood and Emily Gayle Swain, Gordon and Margaret Lee Swain Harrison, William Francis and Betty Wright Swain. He is also survived by his cousins, Adam Ralph Palmer, Jackie Palmer, Bryan V. and Jennifer Layton, Natalie Ann Layton, Kristin Michelle Layton, Christie Lynn and Randy Herndon, Brent Thomas Willin, Courtney Ruth Swain, Jamie Elizabeth Swain, Taylor Kristina Swain, Morgan Carey Swain, Maggie Marie Kerns, Drew Thomas Venables, Paige Marie Venables, Dustin Blair Venables, Gray Robert Venables, Hannah Kate Venables, Amy Alicia Venables, Nathan Ryan Venables; and dozens of loving cousins, aunts, uncles and friends without whom Cory's world would not have been complete. Cory was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Thomas Ryan Swain; and his great uncles and aunts, William and Mildred O'Day, Joseph and Hazel O'Day Mackereth, Leonard and Sue O'Day Pritchett, Linwood Givens, Frank O'Day, Jack Livingston Massie, Gordon Carey Massey, Nelson and Shirley Clemens and Joyce Swain.

A funeral service with full Military Honors will be on Sunday, May 21st, at 3 pm at St. John's United Methodist Church, Pine and Poplar Streets, Seaford. Friends may call at the CRANSTON FUNERAL HOME, 300 N. Shipley St., Seaford, on Saturday, May 20th, from 5-9 pm. Burial will be on Monday, May 22nd, at 1 pm at Arlington National cemetery, Arlington, VA.

Collin T. Gaines

Age 23, departed this life suddenly June 9, 2006, near his home in Wilmington. Son of Dana Tyrone Gaines & the late Sharon A. Gaines & stepson of Sonia M. Gaines. Brother of Corrie, Dawn, DeShawn, Michelle, Michael & Nelson. Also survived by a host of other family & friends. Collin worked as a souse chef since his high school graduations in 2001. Collin most enjoyed fishing, bowling and ping pong. Funeral 4:30 pm Sat., June 17, at CONGO FUNERAL HOME, 2317 N. Market St., where friends may call from 2:30-4:30 pm. Interment will be private.

Joseph L. Goodman, Jr.

Joseph L. Goodman, Jr., age 63, of Wilmington, DE, passed away at St. Francis Hospital on Saturday, June 10, 2006.

Born in Wilmington, Mr. Goodman was the son of the late Joseph and Helen N. (Daly) Goodman. He worked for the Division of Motor Vehicles for 30 years, retiring in 2003. He was a graduate of Salesianum School and Goldey Beacom College, and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan.

He is survived by his uncle, Charles Goodman, of Wilmington.

The funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 17th, at 9:30 am, at the MEALEY FUNERAL HOME, 703 N. Broom Street, Wilmington, where friends may call after 8:30 am. Interment will follow in Cathedral cemetery, Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Christ Our King Church, 2810 N. Monroe Street, Wilmington, DE 19802; or to St. Anthony of Padua Church, 901 N. Dupont St., Wilmington, DE 19805.

James T. Johnson "Jimmy"

James T. Johnson, of Bear, DE, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 11, 2006, in his 43rd year of life.

Jimmy was born in Wilmington, son of Jerry M. Johnson, Sr. and the late Evelyn V. Johnson. He was raised in New Castle, and was a lifelong Delawarean.

Jimmy was preceded in death by his mother, Evelyn V. Johnson, in 2001. He is survived by his daughter, Mandi L. Bockman, and her husband, John, of New Castle; granddaughter, Brendalyn; father, Jerry M. Johnson, Sr., of Baldwin, FL; brothers, Jerry M. Johnson, Jr., Jeremiah Johnson and Jason Johnson, all of Newark; sisters, Diane Russell, of Jackson, FL, Debbie Harbaugh, of Butler, PA, and Mary Ann Johnson.

Services in celebration of Jimmy's life will be held privately by his family.

In memory of Jimmy, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 92 Reads Way, New Castle, DE 19720.
