William Albert Payne
DelDOT superintendent
William Albert Payne, 75, of Georgetown, died Friday Jan. 28, 2005, at Bayhealth, Milford, from heart problems.
Mr. Payne was born in York, Pa. in 1929, son of the late William and Marie Payne. The family moved to Georgetown in the early 1940s.
Bill graduated from Georgetown High School in 1947. Shortly after, he enlisted in the U. S. Navy. He retired from DelDOT after 40 years service as a superintendent.
Bill was an active member of the Loyal Order of Odd Fellows Lodge of Georgetown where he held several positions including Grand Master. He was an avid fan of Sussex Central Sports and a Little League supporter. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Georgetown.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years Patricia Holson Payne; daughter Venetia Payne Donaway; son John William Payne; and granddaughter Dara Amber Donaway all of Georgetown.
Funeral Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, at the Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Dodd-Carey Chapel, 307 North Bedford St., Georgetown, where friends may call one hour prior to services. Burial will follow in Union cemetery , Georgetown.

Carl C. Conrad,
retired truck driver
Carl C. Conrad, 53, of Georgetown, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at his residence. Mr. Conrad was born in Milford, son of the Ruth (Williams) Conrad and the late Charles Hammond Conrad, Sr. He had been employed as a poultry truck driver for 15 years for Mountaire Farms, retiring in 2004 on disability. He was a collector of model John Deere tractors. He was also an avid deer and boar hunter.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife Laura H.(Elliott) Conrad; a daughter, Billie Jo Layfield and her husband, Scott, of Georgetown; three sons, Troy and wife, Jennifer, Conrad; Chad Conrad and fiance, Sarah Wolfe; and Robert Reed and wife, Eva, all of Georgetown; two brothers, Charles Jr. and wife, Donna Conrad, of Milford, and Irvin and wife, Anita Conrad, of Georgetown; a daughter-in-law, Sharon White; his mother-in-law, Betty Elliott of Georgetown; a grandson, Seth Layfield; two granddaughters, Logan Layfield and Briana Stout; one niece and seven nephews.
A funeral service will be held at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Dodd-Carey Chapel, 307 N. Bedford Street, Georgetown at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 2, with Pastor Ron Schatz officiating. Friends may call Tuesday evening, Feb. 1, from 6-8 p.m., at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Union cemetery
in Georgetown.
Theresa Broeders Aiken,
retired nurse
Theresa Broeders Aiken, 84, of Kennett Square, Pa., passed away Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at Jennersville Regional Hospital.
Mrs. Aiken was born in Seattle, Wash. and raised in Lewes, where she graduated from high school. After attending St. Francis Hospital School of Nursing, she joined the Army Nurse Corps American Theatre in 1942, serving in Panama.
She was a private duty nurse for Jesse Ball DuPont and retired from the clinic at A.I. Institute.
Theresa loved knitting, reading, Scrabble and Rehoboth Beach.
She was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed.
She is survived by her husband of 58 years, James Aiken; her children, Margaret Slaughter, Mary Rebecca Dolbow, James Aiken, Peter Aiken, and Joan Przywara; a sister, Mary Groome; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Feb. 2, at the Kennett Square Presbyterian Church, 211 S. Broad Street, Kennett Square, Pa. Friends and family may call from 10 to 11 a.m. before the service. Interment will be in the Union Hill cemetery.

Samuel S. West,

Samuel S. West, 41, of Bedford, Pa., died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005 at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital, Allegheny County, Pa.
Mr. West was born in Wilmington on March 3, 1963, the son of the late Sherwood F. West and Martha Lee Powell West, who survives him, of Ft. Pierce, Fla.
He was an executive chef and was affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America and was a volunteer with the March of Dimes.
He was the husband of Kendra L. Brown West, whom he married Nov. 22, 1989.
In addition to his wife and mother, he is survived by a daughter, Jennifer K. West, at home; two stepsons, Michael Marino of San Diego, Calif., and Joseph Marino of Indiana, Pa.; and a sister, Catherine West-Olivetti, Hilton Island, S.C.
Friends are invited to call from 4 to 6 p.m., Tuesday at Louis Geisel Funeral Home, Bedford. Funeral services will be private.

Bishop James Floyd Satchell,
retired from city of Rehoboth
Bishop James Floyd Satchell Sr., 78, of Milton, died Thursday, Jan. 27, 2005 in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover.
Mr. Satchell was born May 18, 1926, in Accomac County, Va., son of the late James E. and Hattie Bailey Satchell.
He was raised in Virginia and relocated to Milton in the early 1950s.
He honorably served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Satchell was employed by the city of Rehoboth Beach as an equipment operator for 34 years, retiring in 1990.
He reared the children of the late Roland and Sadie Sheppard.
He was an ordained bishop of the Apostolic Church of the Lord Jesus Christ of Cool Spring from 1972 until his death.
He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Eileen Miller Satchell; three daughters, Felicia Satchell, Kara Satchell and Atavia Satchell, all of Milton; a son, James F. Satchell Jr., who resides with his mother; a stepdaughter, Venison Sullivan of Georgetown; three grandchildren, Enijah M. Daisey, Keisha Sullivan and Charissa Sullivan; a sister and a brother-in-law, Cora Lee and Willy Miller of Bridgeton, N.J.; and a niece, Eunice Arlee Satchell of Baltimore; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday in the Community Church of the Lord Jesus Christ, Coverdale Road, Seaford. Services will be held 11 a.m., Wednesday in the church. Burial will be in the Delaware Veteran’s Memorial cemetery , Millsboro.
Glenn C. Moore Sr.,
farmer, businessman
Glenn C. Moore Sr., 75, of Millsboro, died Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at home.
Mr. Moore was a local businessman and farmer.
He was born in Willards, Md. on Jan. 18, 1930, to the late Harley W. and Hazel M. Baker Moore.
He attended school in the Willards area in his childhood. he was a member of Franklin Lodge AF&AM , Georgetown, a 32nd Degree Mason, member of the Scottish Rite, Tall Cedars of Lebanon Evergreen Forest 49, a shriner with the Boumi Temple, a life member of the Millsboro Fire Company, where he served as an engineer, and was a director of the Farmers Bank of Willards.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Ann Selby Moore on Dec. 16, 2003.
He is survived by a son, Glenn C. Moore Jr. of Millsboro; a daughter, Shelly A. Townsend and her husband C.P. of Dagsboro; two grandchildren, Glenn C. Moore III and his wife Jeanine, and Mindi M. Moore; and a great-granddaughter, Madelyn Moore.
Services will be held at noon, Tuesday, Feb. 1, at the Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum, U.S. Route 113, north of Millsboro, with Pastor Jeff Hudson officiating. There will be no visitation. Entombment will be at the Woodlawn Mausoleum.

Promise Keeper
John L. Shank, 56, of Oak Orchard, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2005, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Mr. Shank was a member of the Community Church of Oak Orchard and an active member of the Promise Keepers.
He is survived by his wife, Christine Shank; a son, John “Skip” Shank of the family home; three daughters, Megan Shank of the family home, Jennifer Toomey of Downingtown, Pa. and Judy Scheibe of Malvern, Pa.; and four grandchildren, George Scheibe, Morgan Scheibe, Carolyn Toomey and Lauren Toomey.
Services were held in the Community Church of Oak Orchard, Millsboro.

John A. Hoefer,
retired from Chrysler
John A. Hoefer, 93, of Millsboro, died Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, at Beebe Medical Center, Lewes.
Mr. Hoefer was a retired tool and die machinist for Chrysler Corporation. He served in the Delaware National Guard, was a charter member and the first senior warden of the Anglican Parish of St. James near Georgetown, was past master of the Franklin Lodge 31 of Newport and past patron of the Order of the Eastern Star chapter 9 of Georgetown.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor Lenhart, in 1999.
He is survived by a son, J. Ronald Hoefer and his wife Betty; his brother-in-law, Lucien T. Lenhart; a niece, Aleta Esham and her husband Bill; a nephew, Lucien T. Lenhart Jr. and his wife Sandy; three grandchildren, William Bruce Hoefer, John Robert Hoefer and James Douglas Hoefer; two great-grandchildren, Robert Hoefer and Nicole Helbig.
Funeral and Masonic services were held at Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck, with burial in Long Neck cemetery.

Laura Elizabeth Hinzman,

Laura Elizabeth Hinzman, 50, of Dover, died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, in Thomas Jefferson Hospital, Philadelphia.
Mrs. Hinzman was born May 25, 1954, in Ridley Park, Pa., the daughter of Carl Bowker, now of Aston, Pa., and Virginia Newsome Bowker Xavier, now of Milton.
She worked for more than 25 years as a machine operator for Playtex Products.
She enjoyed crocheting and reading.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Crystal Lee Tremper, in 1976.
She is survived by her husband of 19 years, David L. Hinzman of Dover; a daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly B. Tremper Lawson and Scott Lawson of Smyrna; a son, Joseph Edward Tremper of Laurel, Md.; a sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Ronald Sauter of Glen Burnie, Md.; two brothers, Carl Bowker Jr. of Houston and William E. Xavier; a granddaughter, Emma Grace Lawson of Smyrna; a host of nieces and nephews; and her parents, Carl Bowker Sr. of Aston and Virginia Xavier of Milton.
Services were held in Torbert Funeral Chapel South, Dover, with burial private.

John Albert Sirmons,
retired forklift operator
John Albert Sirmons, 73, of Milton, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2005, of cancer, at home.
Mr. Sirmons was born Nov. 17, 1931 in Sumter, S.C., son of Hattie and Elbert Sirmons.
He was a retired forklift driver for Vlasic.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, John Sirmons Jr. and a daughter, Margie Grant.
He is survived by his wife, Ponnee Sirmons of Milton; three sons and a daughter-in-law, Jessie Sirmons of Florida, Ralph and Gaylene Sirmons of Madison, Wis., and Jimmy Gray of Milton; four daughters, Yvonne Lovett of Trenton, S.C., Willie Mae Jefferson and Wilhemia Edwards, both of Rochester, N.Y., and Debbie Cox of Lake Wales, Fla.;a sister and brother-in-law, Bertha and John Wilder Loughman of Fla.; a sister-in-law and her spouse, Mary and Willie Mitchell of Lake City, Fla.; a nephew who was raised as a brother, and his spouse, Ray Albert and Lucille Loughman; an aunt, Chloe Canty of Staten Island, N.Y.; 20 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
Services were held in Mount Zion Holy Church, Milton, with burial in Congregational Church cemetery , Milton.
Cyril A. Schulman,
physician, professor
Cyril A. Schulman, 87, of Chevy Chase, Md. and formerly of Alexandria, Va. and Washington, D.C., died Jan. 10, 2005, at Suburban Hospital, of complications of Parkinson’s disease.
Dr. Schulman was an internist in private practice in Washington. He began his practice in 1948 and maintained his office in downtown Washington through 1988. He was also a clinical faculty member at George Washington University, a volunteer position, for more than 50 years, teaching physical diagnosis to medical students until his mid-80s. Upon his retirement from private practice in 1971, he became a volunteer physician for the D.C. government, providing care for indigent and homeless patients until 1997.
He had been active in the American Cancer Society and spoke frequently on radio and television and the dangers of smoking and the importance of early treatment of breast cancer. He and his wife, Margaret, of Chevy Chase, established the Judith Rubenstein Courage Award to honor people who have battled cancer.
He served in the Army Air Forces during World War II, attaining the rank of captain.
An avid gardener, he was president of the Men’s Garden Club of Montgomery County and helped create an extensive azalea garden at the Rehoboth Art League. All major entrances at the Art League are planted in colorful pansies, thanks to Dr. Schulman’s efforts.
He was a member of the Brandeis Club, when met every Tuesday for more than 70 years, and was formed in 1931 by a group of Jewish boys who played basketball together at the Jewish Community Center. Dr. Schulman was also a member of Adas Israel Congregation in the District.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Margaret Schulman of Chevy Chase; three children, Susan Kirschenbaum of Kingston, R.I., Robert Schulman of Blackburn, Va. and Dr. Jeffrey Schulman of McLean, Va.; a brother, Martin “Bud” Schulman of Chevy Chase; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
