Jeanne I. Petrillo

Jeanne I. Petrillo, age 73, of New Castle, DE, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 11, 2006.

Mrs. Petril-lo had 2 real passions in life - being with her family, whom she loved more than anything, especially her 7 grandchildren, and bowling. She bowled on 2 leagues - the Tuesday Night Owls and the Friday Night Cocktails, and she served as secretary for both leagues. She enjoyed the Sci-Fi channel and watching Emeril on the food channel. Jeanne was loved by all who knew her and she will be missed. She and her husband, Nicholas C. Petrillo, celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary May 29, 2006.

In addition to her loving husband, she is survived by 3 children, Cheryl Sowers, and her life partner, Tom Dubois, Michelle Petrillo, and her fiancé, Tony Graham, and Nicholas Petrillo, III, and his wife, Beverly. Survivors also include her beloved grandchildren, Christina, Anthony, Tiffany, Nicholas, IV, Matthew, Christopher and Timothy; 1 sister, Debbie Moracyk, and her husband, Tom; and her cat, Pretty Boy.

A celebration of her life will be held at 11 am on Thursday, June 15, 2006, at the MCCRERY MEMORIAL FUNERAL HOME, 3924 Concord Pike, Talleyville, where friends may call after 10 am. Burial will follow the service, in Edgewood Memorial Park, in Glen Mills, PA.

Flowers will be accepted, or contributions may be made in Mrs. Petrillo's memory to your favorite charity.

Virginia H. Polen

Virginia H. Polen, age 89, died June 3, 2006 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, in Littleton, CO.

She was born in Smyrna, DE, daughter of the late Edgar T. and Elizabeth W. Heinold, and wife of the late Harvey J. Polen. She graduated from the John Bassett Moore High School, in Smyrna. She was a 40-year resident of Kennett Square, PA, where she was active in the Kennett Little Theatre; a past member of the William W. Fahey Post #491 American Legion Auxiliary; the Kennett Square Presbyterian Church; the Kennett Square Chapter #513 of the Order of the Eastern Star; and a current member of the Cochranville Chapter #347. She was a 14-year employee of the University of Pennsylvania at the New Bolton School of Veterinary Medicine.

She is survived by a son, H. Gerald Polen (Barbara), of Avondale, PA; a daughter, Mary E. Balogh (Michael), of Littleton, CO; a sister, Marie H. Moffett, of Sarasota, FL; 4 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild.

A memorial service will be held at the Immanuel Methodist Church, Main Street, Townsend, DE, at 11 am on Saturday, June 17, 2006.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be sent to Immanuel Methodist Church, PO Box 60, Townsend, DE 19734.

Norma F. Richardson

Age 94, of Dover, DE, died June 9, 2006.

Devoted wife of Walter E. Beloved mother of Ronald F., of Galloway Township, NJ.

Visitation 7-9 pm Tuesday, June 13, with prayer service at 8:30 pm, at the MICHAEL J. AMBRUSO FUNERAL HOME, 1175 S. State St., Dover. Burial will be at 12 noon on Wednesday, June 14, in Cold Springs Presbyterian Church cemetery, 780 Seashore Rd., Cape May (Cold Spring), NJ.

Louise Riddell (D'Andrea)

Louise D. Riddell, age 90, of Hockessin, DE, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 5, 2006, at her residence.

Born in Wilmington, Mrs. Riddell was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mattia (Luadadia) D'Andrea. During World War II, she worked at the Dover Air Base. Afterward, she worked for the duPont family until her retirement. Mrs. Riddell was active in the Newark Senior Center and was the treasurer of the AARP Delaware Chapter.

She was predeceased by her husband, John Riddell; and her sisters, Frances Filicetti and Josephine Strietz; and her brothers, Jack and Peter D'Andrea. She is survived by her sister, Mary Montoro, of Wilmington; her brother, Joseph D'Andrea, of Newark; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at 1 pm on Friday, June 9th, at Holy Angels Church, 82 Possum Park Road, Newark, DE 19711, where visitation began after 12 noon. Interment will be in Cathedral cemetery in Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to St. Johns/Holy Angels Church at the address above.

Charles D. Riska

Age 32, of Rising Sun, MD, died Sunday, June 11, 2006.

The service and interment will be held privately.

Francis J. Roche

Age 88, of Wilmington, DE, died on Friday, June 9, 2006, at Stonegate.

Born in Penns Grove, NJ, son of the late Daniel J. and Louise Fow Roche, he had been a longtime resident of the Penns Grove-Carneys Point area prior to moving to Wilmington, DE 4 years ago. A 1935 graduate of Penns Grove High School, Mr. Roche was a US Navy veteran, having served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. A welder by trade, he was employed in the purchasing department of the DuPont Chambers Works, retiring after over 40 years of service. Mr. Roche had been a member of Corpus Christi RC Church, in Carneys Point, and the DuPont Veterans Association. He played semi-pro baseball with the Pedricktown Peds, and had played on the Smokeless Powder team for DuPont. An avid baseball fan, he was especially fond of the NY Yankees.

Mr. Roche was predeceased by his wife, Sarah A. Roche, in 1991; brothers, James and Dan; and sisters, Marie Willardsen and Nellie Hart. He is survived by 2 sons, Dan, and his wife, Margaret, of Bear, DE, and Michael, and his wife, Carol, of Vineland, NJ; 2 daughters, Mary Frances Connor, and her husband, Jim, of West Chester, PA, and Geri Bergey, and her husband, Gene, of Wilmington, DE; 7 grandsons, Christopher Sama, Aaron Roche, Jon-Paul Roche, Peter Roche, Andrew Roche, Benjamin Roche and Daniel Roche; and 2 great grandsons, Dominick and Giovani Sama.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am on Wednesday, June 14, at Corpus Christi RC Church, 369 Georgetown Rd., Carneys Point, NJ, where there a viewing will be held from 9:30-11 am, prior to mass. Interment will be in Lawnside cemetery, in Pilesgrove, NJ.

Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, 100 W. 10th St., Wilmington, DE 19803.

Dakota Valentino Sanborn

Dakota Valentino Sanborn, newborn son of Frankie Sanborn and Tina Porter, went to be with the angels June 9, 2006.

Dakota is also survived by paternal grandparents, Ethel L. Hendrickson and Thomas J. Bickling; maternal grandparents, Brian W. and Sandra Porter; and maternal great grandmother, Dorothy Owens. Dakota is also survived by aunts, uncles and a cousin. He was preceded in death by his paternal great grandparents, Burlin Owens, and Nicholas and Mary Sanborn; and maternal great-grandmother, Jane Porter.

A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, June 14, 2006, at 2 pm, in All Saints cemetery, Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE.

Darlene (Tingle) Short

Age 59, of Dagsboro, DE, died June 11, 2006. Visitation 11 am and funeral 12 noon Wed., June 14, at MELSON FUNERAL SERVICES, Thatcher St., Frankford, DE.

Shaler Gordon Smith, III, PhD

Shaler Gordon Smith, III, PhD, of Washington Crossing, PA, and previously of Wilmington DE, died peacefully at home on Friday, June 9, 2006, at the age of 51. He was with his wife and 3 of his long term childhood friends.

Shaler graduated from the University of Delaware with undergraduate, graduate and doctorate degrees. While at the University, Shaler was a member of the Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Xi honor societies and the Alpha Phi Omega Service fraternity. For many years, Shaler was also a guest lecturer at the university in the areas of cardiopulmonary physiology and the drug development process.

Shaler was proud to have spent his entire career in the pharmaceutical industry, where he was a vital member of numerous teams that developed more than a dozen new prescription drugs. He started his career at ICI Americas. He then worked at Merck, DuPont Merck and Aventis. His expertise included research, product development, project management, strategic planning, business acquisitions and regulatory affairs. He was widely published and was also an instructor in topics related to the drug development process for Pharmaceutical Education and Research Institute (PERI). But to those who knew him, Shaler will be best remembered for his dry wit, sense of humor, story telling, zest for life and love of champagne. He will be truly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him and had the honor of being his friend.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Anne (nee Pritulsky) Smith; and his daughter, Jordan Elizabeth Smith, who was his pride and joy and the love of his life. He is also survived by his mother, Barbara Gray Smith, of Holland, PA, previously of Bonita Springs, FL, and he was predeceased by his father, Shaler Gordon Smith, Jr.

Friends, family and colleagues are invited to attend a celebration of Shaler's life on Thursday, June 15, 2006, from 11 am until his funeral service at 12 noon, at the JOSEPH A. FLUEHR III FUNERAL HOME, 800 Newtown-Richboro Rd. (at Holland Rd.), Richboro, PA. Interment will be held privately.

To honor Shaler's love of science, we ask that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to one of the following: Thomas Jefferson Headache Center, 111 S. 11th St., Suite 8130 Gibbon Building, Philadelphia, PA 19107; or to the Fox Chase Cancer Center, Attn: Development Office for Brain Cancer Research, 333 Cottman Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19111.

Elizabeth Smyth (nee Van Kirk) "Betty"

Age 77, of Middletown, DE, formerly of Drexel Hill, PA, passed away on Sunday, June 11, 2006.

She was a retired business office supervisor for Bell of Pennsylvania.

She was the beloved wife of Richard; the devoted mother or Margaret (Russell) Pyle, Richard Jr., Susan (James) Lan-non, Paul (Rosemary), Karen (Anthony) Gruber, Thomas (Donna) and the late Kathleen Ives. She is also survived by 2 brothers, Joseph and Thomas Van Kirk; 18 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing from 6:30-9 pm on Wednesday, June 14, at the KING FUNERAL HOME, 209 N. Newtown Street Rd., Newtown Square, PA. A funeral mass will be offered at 10:30 at at St. Andrew Church, 3500 School Ln., Drexel Hill, PA. Interment will be in Holy Cross cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Delaware Hospice, 911 S. Dupont Hwy., Dover, DE 19901, will be appreciated.
