Jolene M. Figgs,

Jolene M. Figgs, 72, of Millsboro, died Thursday, March 24, 2005, at home.
She was born in Dagsboro, the daughter of the late Ira and Beatrice Downs Murray.
Mrs. Figgs graduated from the John M. Clayton High School. Before taking time off to raise her family, she was employed by Collins & Ryan Glass Co. Later in life she was employed by Brasure’s Carpet Care as an office manager. She was very active at Hickory Hill Church as pianist and Sunday school teacher and later attended Millsboro Wesleyan Church. She enjoyed camping, playing cards with friends, reading, sewing, computers and arts and crafts.
She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Norman D. Figgs; her son, Jerry Figgs and her daughter Jennifer Willey; three grandchildren, Jordan Willey, Peyton Willey and Chris Gabel; daughter-in-law, Rosemary Figgs; and son-in-law Mark Willey.
Services were held from the Chapel at Melson Funeral Services, Frankford, with burial in the Dagsboro Redmens Memorial cemetery.

Norma’s employee
Jean Mills, 76, of Milton, died Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at home.
Born in Milton, the daughter of the late Preston Chandler Sr. and Nellie Warrington Chandler, she was a seamstress for Paul Berstein for many years and worked at Norma’s Sub Shop in Milton. She was a homemaker and member of Goshen U.M. Church in Milton. She enjoyed going to the beach, shopping, knitting and doing embroidery.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by three brothers, Preston Chandler Jr., Robert Chandler and James Chandler.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Granville W. Mills; two daughters, Carol Moore and husband, Glenn, of Milton, and Donna Mummel and her husband, Dale, of Lititz, Pa.; three sons, Granville Bill Mills of Milton and David Wayne Mills and Chris Mills, both of Millsboro; a sister, Doris Legates of Milton; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; seven nieces; and one nephew.
Services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 26, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call after 1 p.m. Burial will be in Odd Fellows cemetery , Milton.

Charlotte Smith Kiley,
retired federal employee
Charlotte R. Smith) Kiley, 83, of Lewes, died Friday, March 18, 2005, at Harbor Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Lewes.
Mrs. Kiley was born Aug. 27, 1921 in Providence, R.I. to the late Stephen and Rena Smith.
Mrs. Kiley was raised in the Boston, Mass. area. She was a federal employee for more than 20 years working in the field of communications. At the time of her retirement she was working for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation. She relocated to Lewes in 1989. Mrs. Kiley served in the U.S. Army (WAAC) as a telephone operator during WWII. During her lifetime, she was a member of the following organizations: Eastern Star Unity Chapter 16 Shrine, Women of the Moose, Gold Star Wives, Purple Heart, Retired Officers Association, American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard H. Kiley Sr. She is survived by her son, Richard H. Kiley Jr. and his wife Marijane of Elkins, W.Va.; two grandchildren, Richard H. Kiley III of Saylorsburg, Pa. and Jonathan Kiley of Elkins; and two great-grandchildren, Shelby and Jordan Kiley of Saylorsburg.
All services are private. Interment will be at Arlington National cemetery . Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Lewes.

Ferdinand Meyer IV,
bottle club founder
Ferdinand Meyer, IV, 70, of Long Neck, died Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
Mr. Meyer was born in Baltimore, Md., Oct. 27, 1934 to the late Ferdinand Meyer III and Marcelana Schoolfield Meyer.
Mr. Meyer graduated from Staunton Military Academy in 1953. He served with the Army Security Agency for three years. Following his military service, he joined his father in the family run Yeaton & Co. fuel oil business in Baltimore. The company was sold in 1987 and he eventually retired to Long Neck where he collected and sold antiques.
Other hobbies included boating and fishing, model railroading, and bottle clubs. He and his wife, Jeane, were the founding members of the Delmarva Antique Bottle Club and Mr. Meyer was a past president of the Baltimore Antique Bottle Club. He was also a member of the Kiwanis Club for over 30 years in the Baltimore-Towson, Md. area.
Mr. Meyer was formerly married to Katherine "Rylee" Meyer.
He is survived by his second wife Jeane Nanette "Pemberton" Meyer whom he married in 1978; three sons, Ferdinand Meyer V of Houston, Texas, Charles Kenneth Meyer of Towson, Michael Douglas Meyer Sr. of Towson; one daughter, Amy Lauren "Meyer" Kramer of Landenberg, Pa; six grandchildren, Michael Douglas Meyer Jr., Natalie Yoo Rim Meyer, Alexander James Meyer, Cole McKeehen Kramer, Lauren Elizabeth Kramer and Edie Renee Alucema; three great-grandchildren, Adrianna Andress Alucema, Nicholas Fernando Alucema and Isabella Elizabeth Alucema.
A graveside service will be held Monday, March 28, at 2 p.m., at Dulaney Valley Memorial Gardens & Mausoleum, 200 East Padonia Road, Timonium, Md. A memorial service will be held Monday, April 4 at 11 a.m., at Lewes Presbyterian Church, 133 Kings Highway.

Mary Baxter Holt,

Mary Baxter Holt, 89, of Federalsburg, Md., died Tuesday, March 22, 2005,at Memorial Hospital, Easton, Md.
Mrs. Holt graduated from Suldersville High School and studied and lived in Baltimore before moving to Federalsburg, where she met her future husband. She as a charter member of the Caroline County Garden Club and held a master’s certificate in flower show judging, winning sweepstakes, tri-color and awards of distinction in flower shows in Maryland and Delaware. She often gave talks on flower arrangement and horticulture. In 1987, she became a master judge emerita, National Council of State Garden Clubs, and in 1991, she was honored by the Caroline County Garden Club for her participation in the club’s activities.
She also had a lifelong interest in history and antiques and became a charter member of the Choptank Chapter of the American Antique Arts Association. In 2002, she was responsible for the renovation of Exeter, a historic federal house in Federalsburg. For many years she was a member of Rotary Inner Wheel in Salisbury, Md. and the Women’s Club of Federalsburg.
She served three years as a director of the Caroline County Nursing Home.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Weston Holt, whom she married in 1937; a sister, Elizabeth Baxter Phillips; and a brother, Henry Baxter.
She is survived by a daughter, Dr. Roberta B. holt of Chevy Chase and Rehoboth Beach; a son and a daughter-in-law, Haines Baxter Holt and Nancy Stoll Holt of Easton; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Medford Baxter of Sudlersville.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, March 28, at Williamson Funeral Home, 311 S. Main St., Federalsburg, where friends may call at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Hillcrest cemetery , Federalsburg.

Eleanor Nowland Davis

Eleanor Nowland Davis, 77, of Smyrna, died Wednesday, March 23, 2005, in Bayhealth Kent General Hospital, Dover.
Mrs. Davis was a homemaker who was very active in many volunteer organizations and was a former Delaware Volunteer of the Year. Her joys included spending time with her family and her horses and she was a member of the United States Trotting Association.
Mrs. Davis was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Smyrna, where she served in many offices, including recording secretary. She was a member of the Outreach Missions and the Mt. Vernon Fellowship Sunday School class, a former Sunday school teacher and coordinator for the Asbury Church Bazaar for many years, as well as president of the ladies auxiliary at Delaware Hospital for the Chronically Ill for 33 years.
She as preceded in death by a grandson, Jason Durham, in 2002; a great-granddaughter, Alison Davis, in 2002; and a brother, W. Howard Nowland, in 1996.
She is survived by her husband, Medford Davis Jr.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Medford III and Cathy Davis of Rehoboth Beach and Ray and Linda Davis of Clayton; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Joan and Bob Dathe of Cedar Knolls, N.J., Susan Durham of Smyrna and Gail and Greg Mack of Rehoboth Beach; a brother, J. Ronald Nowland of Richmond, Va.; two sisters, Doris Everett of Clayton and Allene Poore of Smyrna; 14 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 26, at Asbury United Methodist Church, 22-24 West Mt. Vernon St., Smyrna, where friends may call at 9 a.m. Burial will be in Glenwood cemetery , Smyrna.

Michael Brown,
Wyoming police officer
Michael Brown, 27, of Dover, died Tuesday, March 22, 2005, following a motorcycle accident.
Mr. Brown attended school in the Capitol School District and was active in Little League and Pop Warner football in his youth. He later moved to New York with his sister, where he graduated from West high School. He also graduated from Mansfield University where he received a degree in criminal justice.
Mr. Brown spent two years with the Rehoboth Beach Police Department and most recently was an officer for the Wyoming Police Department. He was a member of Grace Methodist Church in Corning, N.Y.
He is survived by his father and his fiance, Lee Brown and Deb Burge of Dover; his mother and stepfather, Sharon and Herman Reed Jr. of Dover; his grandfather, Melvin Brown of Dover; a brother and sister-in-law, Jeffrey Lee and Jaclynne Brown of North East, Md.; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Melissa Brown of Dover and Holly and Michael Rarrick of Corning; and two nephews, Michael and Tanner Rarricck of Corning.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, March 25, at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road, Dover. Services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, March 26, in the funeral chapel, where friends may call at noon.

Joan Smith,

Joan Smith, age 72, of Rehoboth Beach, died Sunday, March 20, 2005, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes. Mrs. Smith was born in Chester, Pa., March 25, 1932, to the late Joseph and Lillian Rehrman. She had four children and nine grandchildren. Mrs. Smith enjoyed sewing, knitting and Sunday family dinners.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, William R. Smith; children - Donald Smith, David Smith, Carolyn Epstein and Audrey Rice; and three brothers - Robert, Eugene and Donald Rehrman. She is predeceased by two brothers - Joseph and William Rehrman.
A Memorial Mass will be at 11:45 a.m., April 1, in the Retreat House Chapel at the Oblates of St. Francis De Sales, 1120 Blue Ball Road, Childs, Md.

Charles J. Vinson Sr.,

Charles J. Vinson Sr., 70, of Houston, died Sunday, March 20, 2005, at home.
Mr. Vinson retired after 28 years with the Sun Oil Co. as chief engineer with licenses in diesel and steam engineering. After retiring he owned and operated Vinson’s Repair Service for eight years.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 43 years, Frances C. Vinson; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Larry F. and Marion Vinson of Felton and Charles J. Vinson Jr. and David W. and Kimberly Vinson, all of Houston; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Dottie Jean and Bill Robinson of Dutton, Ala., Mary Frances Vinson of Salisbury, Md., and Susan C. and James M. Payton Sr. of Milton; two brothers, Billy J. Vinson of Florida and Steven Vinson of Tennessee; two sisters, Emma Pemberton and Barbara Chambers, both of Tennessee; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services were held at Berry Short Funeral Home, Milford, with burial in Barratt’s Chapel cemetery , Frederica.
Erwin James Keene,

Erwin James “Slim” Keene, 80, of Millsboro, died Tuesday, March 22, 2005, at home.
Mr. Keen was the head of maintenance for all of the Braunstein’s stores based in Wilmington, where he retired in 1990 after 30 years of service. He was born in Selbyville to the late Lemuel A. and Mary E. Kitchens Keene. He was a member of Doric Lodge A.F. & A.M. No. 30 in Millville and a 32nd-degree Mason of the Scottish Rite Consistory. He was an avid fisherman and a quail and duck hunter.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Keene, and two sisters, Mary Elizabeth Keene and Gertrude Ringler.
Mr. Keene is survived by his wife of 49 years, Virginia “Ginny” Thorpe Keene; a stepson, Paul Robert Goodchild Jr. and his wife, Jackie, of Lincoln; two sisters, Anne Marvel and her husband, James, of Georgetown; and Olda Parsons and her husband, Dale, of Lewes; three stepgrandchildren; three great-stepchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 2 p.m., Sunday, April 3, at the Lighthouse Restaurant at Fisherman’s Wharf, Lewes, with the Rev. Robert Hudson officiating. Burial will be private. Ruth R. Brown,

Ruth Richardson Brown, 82, of Lewes, died Sunday, March 20, 2005, at Harbor Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center in Lewes. She was born in Conowingo, Md., daughter of the late Harry and Ann McCausland Richardson.
Mrs. Brown had formerly worked for Diamond State Telephone in Wilmington for 25 years, retiring in 1975 as a night chief operator.
She is survived by a daughter - Dorothea L. (Brown) Boemer of Antioch, Tenn., son-Richard V. Brown of Lewes, stepdaughter Patricia Allen of Sierra Vista, Ark., stepdaughter Sandra Barnett of Sierra Vista, Ark., stepson John E. Brown of Brandon, Fla., stepdaughter Catherine Warf of Polk City, Fla., six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Richard Brown, and her second husband, Lewis Ernest Brown.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Thursday March 24, at the Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway in Lewes, where friends may call one hour prior to services. Burial will follow at Henlopen Memorial Park near Milton.
Frank J. Horsey Jr.,
Ret. WWII sergeant
Frank J. Horsey Jr., 86, of Waterford, Bear, passed away on Friday, March 18, 2005 at home of Parkinson’s disease.
Horsey was born in Marquette, Mich., March 7, 1919. He relocated to Delaware after serving in the Army as a sergeant in World War II. He retired as a painter after more than 30 years with the Painters Local Union 100. After his retirement, he and his wife moved to Long Neck.
He was the property manager for Mariner’s Court Condominiums in Rehoboth Beach for 20 years before retiring again. He was the post commander at VFW 2863, where he was a life member and the past All American District commander from 1969 to 1970. He was also a life member of the American Legion Post 5 in Rehoboth Beach.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Dorothy (McCormick) Horsey; his sons, Frank J. Horsey III of Longbranch, N.J., Andrew K. Palese of Bear, and Robert Palese of Newark; his daughters, Marcia Crouchelli of Wilmington, Janet Palese of Bear, and Gayle Dupras of Lewes; 13 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 23, at St. Margaret of Scotland Church, 230 Executive Drive, Newark, where Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. Interment will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery
in Bear.
