Frances Louise Hand

Frances Louise Hand, age 89 of Newport, DE, formerly of Limestone Acres, passed away on Tuesday, October 25, 2005, at her home, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born January 21, 1916 in Baltimore, MD to the late William and Edith Boyen Ruby. She remained connected to her birthplace through her enthusiasm for Baltimore sports. For many years, she cheered for the Baltimore Colts and continued to follow her Baltimore Orioles. Frances was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved her family dearly and they loved her right back. She thoroughly enjoyed reading, and took great pride in cleaning her home.

Her husband, Edward Warren Hand, passed away September 16, 1980. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law with whom she lived, Patricia R. Hand-Harris and Stash Harris; her grandchildren, Adrienne A. Abbott of Wilmington, DE and Warren E. Abbott and Tracey of Wilmington, DE; her great grandson, Michael A. Abbott of Wilmington, DE; and her beloved buddy, Slate.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Friday morning, October 28, 2005, at the Gebhart Funeral Home, 531 Delaware St. in the city of New Castle, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Rd., Wilmington, DE 19810.

Elder Baker Jackson

Age 79 of New Castle, DE died Thursday, October 20, 2005 at the Brandywine Nursing Home.

He leaves to honor his memory his wife, Rita Jackson; brother, Johnny Jackson; sister, Idabell Jackson; 2 brothers-in-law; 5 sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other family and friends.

There will be a funeral service at 11 am on Friday October 28, 2005, at The House of Wright Mortuary, 208 E. 35th Street, Wilmington, DE, where family and friends may view from 9-11 am. Interment will be in the Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery in Bear, DE.

Sidney Kessler

Age 79 of Centerville, MA died on Monday, October 24, 2005, at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis after a lengthy illness.

He was born and raised in Worcester, MA to Saul and Sadie (Hass) Kessler and was a graduate of Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He was an Army veteran of WWII and an engineer for Thiokol Corp. in Elkton, MD, a company involved with the NASA space program. As a young couple in Worcester, Sidney and Charlotte were members of Temple Emanuel and it's couples club. He was a member of the Cape Cod Synagogue in Hyannis, where he led Saturday morning services, was the house chair and was the leader of it's seniors group called La'am. He was an instrumental member in the development of the new J.C.C. in Wilmington, DE.

He leaves his wife, Mildred (Oven) Kessler; 3 sons, Jon H. Kessler and his wife, Maryanne, of West Chester, PA, Edward W. Kessler and his wife, Nora, of Newark, DE and Steven M. Kessler and his wife, Sandra, of Houston, TX; 3 beloved sisters, Gladys Rudnick and Barbara Manne, both of Worcester, MA and Claire Harfield of Framingham, MA; and 8 grandchildren, Lauren Kessler DeNight, David A. Kessler, Scott A. Kessler, Abby L. Kessler, Zachary G. Kessler, Laura E. Kessler, Rian M. Kessler and Wm. Luke Kessler. Sidney was predeceased by his wonderful first wife, Charlotte M. (Gordon) Kessler; and his sister, Ruth Steinberg.

The funeral service will be held at 9:30 am on Thursday, October 27, at Cape Cod Synagogue, 145 Winter St., Hyannis, MA. Burial will be in B'Nai Brith cemetery in Worcester, MA. Memorial observance will be held from Saturday evening, October 29, through Friday afternoon, November 4, at Sidney and Mildred's residence in Centerville, MA.

Memorial contributions may be made to Cape Cod Synagogue, 145 Winter St., Hyannis, MA 02601.

Leroy Kuratle "Captain Gus"

Age 79 of Lewes, DE passed away on Tuesday, October 25, 2005, at the Harrison Senior Living Center in Georgetown.

He was a member of the Coast Guard, worked for Gulf Oil in Wilmington, chartered the Tobe II for 26 years, then became an independent trucker.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanne Kuratle; children, Gus Kuratle and his wife, Linda, of Wilmington, Debra Huss and her husband, Albin, of Lansdale, PA, Patricia Ehrhart of Plainsboro, NJ, Tom Smith and his wife, Beverly, of Berlin, MD; and 8 grandchildren.

Family and friends may call from 10-11 am on Monday, October 31st, in the chapel of MELSON FUNERAL SERVICES, Long Neck Rd., Long Neck. The funeral service will be held at 12 noon on Monday in the chapel of the Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery in Millsboro.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Alzheimer's Association of Delaware, 2306 Kirkwood Hwy., Wilmington, DE 19805.

Richard Henry Lee Laird

Devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend of Wilmington and Rehoboth Beach, DE and Delray Beach, FL died suddenly on Monday, October 24, 2005 at the age of 76.

He attended Tower Hill School and Cranbrook School in Bloomfield Hills, MI, and graduated from the University of Virginia in 1952. Immediately following graduation, he joined Wilmington Trust and retired from the trust department in 1992 as senior vice president. Throughout his life, he selflessly shared his time and energy as a dedicated board member of the Boys and Girls Club of Delaware, the Children's Beach House, and the Delaware Curative Workshop. He was a member of the Wilmington Club, the Vicmead Hunt Club, the Rehoboth Beach Country Club, and both the Gulfstream Bath and Tennis Club and St. Andrews Club in Gulfstream, FL. He was also a member of the Aurora Gun Club and past chairman of the Delaware chapter of Ducks Unlimited. A direct descendent of Richard Henry Lee, founding father and signer of the Declaration of Independence, he was a lifelong member of the Society of Lees of Virginia and past governor of the Society of Colonial Wars. His wonderful sense of humor, kindness and genuine interest in others helped foster lifelong friendships with both young and old alike. He was a loyal alumnus of the University of Virginia and enjoyed golf, travel, baseball and the outdoors.

His family includes his beloved wife of 50 years, Marnie; 2 sons; and 3 grandchildren: Richard and his wife, Lucinda, and their daughter, Felicity, of Chadds Ford, PA; Peter and his wife, Patti, and their children, Mary Virginia and Andrew, of Coconut Grove, FL.

A memorial service will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, October 29, at Christ Church Christiana Hundred, Buck Road, Wilmington. A chapel and graveside service will be held on Sunday, October 30, at St. Georges Chapel in Harbeson, DE at 2 pm.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Boys and Girls Club of Delaware, 669 S. Union St., Wilmington, DE 19805; or to the Children's Beach House, 100 W. 10th St., Suite 411, Wilmington, DE 19801.

Theresa L. McGillen (Mattacotti) "Terry"

Age 82 of Eddystone, PA died Sunday, October 23, 2005, at her sister's in Eddystone.

She was the wife of the late John J. "Jack" McGillen; and the mother of John J. McGillen, Jr. (Suzanne), Donald J. McGillen (Violet), James F. McGillen (Patricia) and Anita M. McGillen. She was the sister of Alice Mattacotti, Anita C. "Ann" Cassidy, Alfred Mattacotti and Joseph Mattson; and is also survived by 9 grandchildren.

The service and burial were held at the convenience of the family.

Age 94 of Cokesbury Village, Hockessin, DE died October 14, 2005.

A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Friday, October 28, 2005, in the chapel at Cokesbury Village, 726 Loveville Rd., Hockessin. Burial will be private.

John P. Oleksey

Mr. John P. Oleksey, age 79 of Bear, DE, formerly of Aston, PA, died on Wednesday, October 26, 2005, at Christiana Hospital in Newark, DE.

Born in Chester, PA January 18, 1926, Mr. Oleksey was a graduate of Chester High School. He served his country in the US Navy for 4 years during World War II and was stationed in the South Pacific. Following active duty, he attended the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, graduating with both his bachelor's degree and a commission as an ensign in the US Naval Reserve. Mr. Oleksey would go on to enjoy a 35-year career as a maritime engineer with the US Merchant Marines.

Mr. Oleksey was preceded in death by his parents, George and Eva (Bulback) Oleksey. He is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Elizabeth "Bette" (Jorgensen) Oleksey; 4 children, John P. Oleksey, Jr. and his wife, Conny, of Mesa, AZ, Karen O. Teller and her husband, Richard, of Boston, MA, Kristine O. Ranalli and her husband, Robert, of Wilmington, DE and Karole M. Oleksey of New York, NY; and a brother, Harry of FL.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, October 29, 2005, at the SPICER-MULLIKIN FUNERAL HOME, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where friends may call after 9:30 am. Interment will follow in Lawn Croft cemetery, Ridge Road, Linwood, PA.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Lung Association of Delaware, 1021 Gilpin Avenue, Wilmington, DE 19806; or to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation, PO Box 515, Northampton, MA 01061.
