Alta Paul

March 21, 1910 - August 18, 2005

Of Wilmington, DE passed away August 17, 2005.

Mrs. Paul taught elementary students in DE and PA schools for 30 years. After retiring from teaching, she worked for 17 years at the Foulk Manor North retirement community. She was a member of the First Unitarian Church in Sharpley. Alta had a hobby for many years of creating cards and other artwork with pressed flowers.

Mrs. Paul was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Judy; son, Charles; and her husband, Milton. Survivors include her daughter, Patricia Paul, with whom she resided; and 2 nephews in Lancaster County, PA.

A funeral service will be held 11 am Tuesday, August 23, at Evangelical United Methodist Church, 276 W. Main St., New Holland, PA 17557, with interment in the adjoining cemetery.

You are encouraged to send donations to the outreach and caring committee of your church in lieu of flowers.

Dallas M. "Jim" Quigley

Dallas M. (Jim) Quigley, Jr., age 56, of Oxford, PA died Saturday, August 20, 2005 at his home.

He was the husband of Sherri

Achuff Quigley. Born in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Dallas M. and Ruth Schauffele Quigley, Sr.

Jim successfully owned and operated Auto Repair Unlimited, Inc., Concordville, PA since 1981. He was a Certified Master Automotive Technician. He was devoted to serving his customers honestly and whole-heartedly.

He was a veteran of the US Army. He served in the Vietnam War with the 7th Squadron 1st Air Cavalry "Blackhawks". He was a member of the Blackhawks Association and was active in the Quiet Birdmen (QB's).

Jim was rated in fixed wing and rotor wing aircraft, and enjoyed flying his Piper Cub. Another love was boating, and his second home on the Bohemia River. He will remembered most as a loving Dad and Husband, a great teacher and a true friend.

He is survived by his wife; 1 son, Kyle J. Quigley and 1 daughter, Kendall A. Quigley, both at home; 3 brothers, Robert E. Quigley of Augusta, GA, Stephen A. Quigley of Concordville, PA and Glenn David Quigley of Bear, DE; 3 sisters, Marilyn J. Cavazzini of Newark, DE, Dolores R. Burkhart of Brooksville, FL and Gloria J. Covington of Oxford, PA.

A memorial service will be held at 7:30 pm on Thursday, August 25 at the family home, Fern Creek Farm, 433 Media Rd. Oxford, PA, where friends and family may call from 5-7:30 pm on Thursday. Please dress casual. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers donations in his memory may be made to the Quigley Children College Fund, c/o Wachovia Bank, 273 N. Third St. Oxford, PA 19363.

Arrangements are being handled by the EDWARD L. COLLINS FUNERAL HOME, Inc. Oxford, PA.

James E. Seth

Of Wilmington, DE died Aug. 20, 2005 at St. Francis Hospital. Viewing begins 11 am and funeral 12 noon Thurs., Aug. 25, at THE HOUSE OF WRIGHT MORTUARY, 208 E. 35th St., Wilmington.

James "Jim" Frederick Simpkiss, Sr.

Age 72, of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, died August 20, 2005.

He is survived by his wife, Gerry Simpkiss of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; his sons, James Simpkiss, Jr., of Winter Haven, FL, Charles Simpkiss of Plantation, FL, Lawrence Simpkiss of Dover, DE; daughters, Regina Camponelli of Delaware, Mary Hemphill of Delaware, Nancy Stevenson of Delaware; brother, Kenneth Simpkiss, Jr., of Gainesville, FL, Robert Simpkiss of Massachusetts; 14 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from Wednesday, 2-4 pm, 7-9 pm at the funeral home. A funeral service will be held Thursday, 11 am at the funeral home. Interment to follow at Hollywood Memorial Gardens North.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Vitas Hospice Charitable Fund, 100 South Biscayne Blvd., Suite 1500, Miami, FL 33131.

Edith Norma Simpson

Age 86 of Ocean View, DE died August 20, 2005 at home. Viewing 5-7 pm Tues., August 23, at HASTINGS FUNERAL HOME, 19 S. Main St., Selbyville. Graveside service 2 pm Wed., August 24, in Bel Air Memorial Gardens, Bel Air, MD.

David Walter Swain

Age 56, of Hockessin, DE, formerly of Cape Cod, MA, died on August 17, 2005 in New Orleans, LA.

Mr. Swain was a graduate of Lawrence High School, University of Massachusetts, and Lake Forest University. He served as a construction supervisor specializing in high-rise concrete for 30 years.

He was a member of the Carpenters Union of Philadelphia. He also served as an umpire for Piedmont Little League and treasurer of the A. I. duPont High School swim team.

His father, Walter Swain, predeceased him. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Geralyn (Destafney) Swain; his mother, Eleanor of Falmouth, MA; son, Adam Swain, Tulane University Law School, New Orleans, LA; daughter, Katie Swain, University of Delaware, Newark, DE; three brothers, William of Cape Cod, MA, Richard of Cape Cod, MA and Kevin of Tampa, FL; and one sister, Judith of Grand Rapids, MN.

A memorial mass will be held at 7 pm on Thursday, August 25 at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, 7200 Lancaster Pike, Hockessin. Friends may call from 6-7 pm in the chapel of the church. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Delaware Humane Association, 701 A Street, Wilmington, DE 19801.

Antonios N. Vlamis "Anthony"

Age 89 of Elkton, MD died Monday, August 22, 2005 in Wilmington, DE.

He was born August 8, 1916 in Greece on the island of Andros. He was an officer in the Merchant Marines in Greece until World War II. During the war, he came to NY and served in the Army for the U.S. on a liberty ship. After the war, he left the Army and came to Elkton, MD. He became the owner/operator of Victory Restaurant on W. Main St. with his wife, Helen. He then started a liquor business that became Vlamis Cut Rate Liquors. Anthony was a member of the Mason Lodge in Elkton, the American Legion, also in Elkton, Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Wilmington, DE, and an honorary member of Singerly Fire Company. He loved farming and gardening and animals.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Helen Vlamis; son, Nicholas A. Vlamis of Elkton; daughter, Athene Mystakas of Lebanon, PA; and grandchildren, George, Helene, Anthony, II and Nicole.

Family and friends may call from 6-8 pm on Wednesday, August 24, at the GEE FUNERAL HOME, 259 E. Main St., Elkton. The funeral service will be at 10 am on Thursday, August 25, at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 808 N. Broom St., Wilmington, DE. Interment will be in Mt. Aviat cemetery in Childs, MD after the service.

Viola M. Wright

Age 92 of Wilmington, DE passed away on Sunday, August 21, 2005.

Mrs. Wright enjoyed bowling, the Phillies, and spending time with her grandchildren.

She is survived by her son, Fred L. Wright, Jr. and his wife, Cindy, of Kennett Square, PA; and her grandchildren, Lauren and Christopher. She was predeceased by her husband, Fred L. Wright, Sr.

The service and burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Rd., Suite 100 Clayton Bldg., Wilmington, DE 19810.

Catherine Hogshead "Cathy" Carpenito

Catherine "Cathy" Hogshead Carpenito, age 53, passed into the hands of God on Thursday, August 25, 2005 after a 5 year battle with cancer.

Born on October 27, 1951 in Aiken, SC, Cathy was the daughter of Catherine Gierhart Hogshead and the late Thomas Hamilton Hogshead, Jr. Cathy graduated from the University of Delaware with a Bachelors in Sociology in 1973 after which she worked as a medical social worker in Wilmington, DE. In 1978, Cathy met Tom, and the 2 fell in love. The 2 were married on April 14, 1979 and have since been happily married for 26 years. Cathy was a devout wife, mother, friend and Christian and has been an inspiration to everyone she has touched. She devoted much of her life to service, volunteering at an AIDS clinic in Wilmington, DE, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network and countless church activities.

Cathy is survived by her husband of 26 years, Thomas Anthony Carpenito; sons, Thomas Drury Carpenito and Patrick Brady Carpenito; daughter, Emily Gorrell Carpenito; and mother, Catherine Gierhart Hogshead of Bridgewater, VA. Cathy is further survived by her sister, 3 brothers, and their families: Anne Hogshead Aleman of Durham, NC and her 5 children and grandchildren; Thomas Hamilton Hogshead, III of Greensboro, NC and his 2 sons and grandchildren; Harry Shockley Hogshead and wife, Joy Fawley Hogshead, of Churchville, VA and their 2 children; and Richard McChesney Hogshead of San Francisco, CA and his 2 children.

Memorial services will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, August 30, 2005, at Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church, Raleigh, NC and at 1 pm on Thursday, September 1, 2005 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Wilmington, DE. There will be a reception following each of these services.
