Edward B. Heyden Jr.

Age 80 of Ocean Pines, MD died Sunday, August 1, 2004 at home.

He was born in Orange, NJ and attended Texas Christian University prior to enlisting in the Army Air Corps.

He served in the Pacific as a flight engineer on B-29's.

He was awarded the air medal.

He graduated from Rutgers University, than taught academics and coached football and basketball at high schools in New York, He was a guidance counselor in Southampton High School and Mt. Pleasant High School in Brandywine School District in Wilmington, DE.

He was President of Delaware Personnel and Guidance Assoc., and counselor of the year in 1968.

He was also the past President of Ocean Pines Kiwanis Club and former member of the Ocean Pines Men's Golf Association.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward B and Florence Weston Heyden.

He is survived by his wife, Lois Comrie Heyden of Ocean Pines; 3 sons, Dr. Edward Heyden III and Robin Pittman of Hallandale, FL, Richard Heyden, and his wife, Mary Frances of Prescott, AZ, Michael C. Heyden and his wife, Michele of Wilmington, DE; 2 daughters, Mary Ellen Warren and her husband, Marvin of Wilmington, DE, Nancy Meredith of Ocean Pines, MD; 2 sisters, Gale Templeton of New York City, NY and Joyce Hintz of Westfield, NJ; 5 grandchildren, Carolyn Heyden, Richard Appel, Stacey McMinds, Samantha Meredith and Michael Heyden, Jr; and 1 great grandchild, Marissa McMinds.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday, August 5, 2004 at 10:30 am at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Ocean Pines, MD, where Father Edward Fahey will officiate.

Friends may call 1 hour prior to the service.

Interment will be in Delaware Veterans cemetery, Millsboro, DE at 2 pm.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Coastal Hospice, PO Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21801 of the American Heart Association, 415 North Charles St., Baltimore, MD 21201.

James Leon Keeler

Age 60, of Blackbird passed away at home with his family by his side on Sunday, August 1, 2004.

Jimmy was a Union Iron Worker and a member of Local #451.

He was also a livestock dealer on the Eastern Shore.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mildred Keeler; 2 brothers George III and Joseph, and his first wife, Sandy.

He will be missed by his beloved daughters, whom he referred to as "His Girls", Denise Evans, Lisa Clarke, and Jamie and Krissy Keeler, all of Blackbird.

He was their "rock".

Jimmy is also survived by 1 sister, Kay Weisner and 4 brothers, Bob, Vic, Jack and Pat Keeler.

He will also be dearly missed by his 2 grandsons and "Best Buddies" Chase and Tanner Evans and a son-in-law Ned Evans.

Graveside services will be held at 11 am on Thursday in the Townsend cemetery.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the American Legion, Post #14, 107 Glenwood Ave., Smyrna, DE 19977, or to Heartland Hospice Services, 261 Chapman Rd. Suite 100, Newark, DE. 19702.

Grafton W. Laws

Devoted husband of Lillian Thomas Laws and beloved son of the late Grafton John and Gloria Anna Laws, departed this life on July 23, 2004 at Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs, CO.

Grafton was born on September 29, 1938 in Wilmington, DE.

He attended Wilmington public schools and following his completion of Howard High School in Wilmington, Grafton enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, becoming one of the first African-Americans to do so from the State of Delaware.

He completed his tour of duty with the Marine Corps and was honorably discharged.

Grafton worked with the Vision Quest At-Risk youth program in Tucson, Arizona for several years and he was a community activist in Wilmington, DE for many years before moving west.

Grafton also had been employed with Harrison School District #2 for over 15 years where he was head custodian at Sierra High School for at least 5 of those years.

Grafton was a loving and loyal person.

He had a zest for life and always put his family first.

He was an avid golfer and enjoyed fishing with his grandson and friends.

Grafton believed in the quote "Life is a journey, enjoy the ride." He enjoyed the ride.

The family requests that memorial donations be made to the American Diabetes Association, PO Box 2680 North Canton, Ohio 44720.

Patricia R. Lingo Lawson

Age 62 of Wilmington, DE died Sunday, August 1, 2004 at Harbor Health Care, Lewes, DE.

Born in Lewes, DE she was employed as a Park Supervisor, and retired from the New Castle County Department of Parks and Recreation.

She was a member of St. Marks Episcopal Church in Millsboro, DE.

She was the recipient of the "George T. Sarginsson Award" for outstanding service as a park supervisor.

She loved the beach and was a graduate of Frederick College in Portsmouth, VA.

She was predeceased in death by her mother Olive Hitchens Lingo in 1978.

She is survived by her son, Thomas R. Lawson II of Rehoboth Beach, DE; her father, Joseph C. Lingo of Millsboro, DE; her grandson, Dylan Thomas Lawson.

A service will be held Thursday, August 5, 2004 at 11 am at THE WATSON FUNERAL HOME, 211 Washington St., Millsboro, DE, where Rev. James Burton will officiate.

Viewing will be 1 hour prior to the funeral service.

Interment will follow in Millsboro cemetery, Millsboro, DE.

William A. Lewing

Age 72, of Greenville, DE and North Naples, FL, passed away Sunday, August 1, 2004 in Wilmington attended by his loving family after a gallant and long-lived battle against cancer.

Bill was born in Cincinnati, OH on October 6, 1931 to Celia Poetker and Albert Lewing.

He received a BS in Chemistry from Cornell University, where he was a member of the Red Key honor society and captained the soccer team, and an MBA from University of Delaware.

After college, Bill served our country as a Battery Commander in the US Army in Korea.

On November 19, 1955, he married Virginia Catherine Mullen of Rochester, NY.

They moved to Wilmington where Bill embarked on a 37- year career with the DuPont Company, initially as a chemist.

He served as a sales and business manager in the plastics, film coating and fabricated products areas throughout his career.

Bill retired to Florida in 1992, while remaining active in the Rotary Club and as a director of a private company.

He was a member of Wilmington CC and Audobon CC in Naples, FL.

He is survived by his mother, Jean Lewing of Monson, MA; sister Margie Berube of Falmouth, MA and sister Dee Adkins of Kinston, NC; his wife of 48 years Ginny; their 4 children David Lewing and wife Patrice Derrington, of East Hampton, NY, Douglas Lewing and wife Sally of Yardley, PA, Tara Lewing Fineman and husband Brad of Arlington, VA, Drew Lewing and wife Sophie of Niagra on the Lake, Ontario; and 7 grandchildren, Ginna, Ally and Jake Lewing, Graeme and William Fineman, Maxime and Noah Lewing.

Relatives and friends are invited to celebrate Bill's life with a visitation at the CHANDLER FUNERAL HOME, 2506 Concord Pike, Sharpley, from 6-8pm on Wednesday, August 4.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10am on Thursday, August 5 at St. Joseph's on the Brandywine Church, 10 Old Church Rd., Greenville.

Burial will be private.

Mary Ella Manelski

passed away at home on Friday, July 30, 2004.

Service Tuesday, August 3, 2004, 11am in the FARIES FUNERAL CHAPEL, 29 South Main Street, Smyrna, DE, where friends may call 1 hour before service.

Burial Odd Fellows cemetery, Smyrna.

John B. O'Donnell

Age 78, of Milltown, DE, passed away on Sunday morning, August 1, 2004 in the Christiana Hospital.

John ("Jack") was born in Coaldale, PA, on July 26, 1926 to the late Bernard and Cecilia O'Donnell.

He graduated from St. Mary's grade school and Coaldale High School in 1944.

Jack proudly served in the U.S. Army between 1944 and 1946 during late hostilities and peacetime in Europe.

He later graduated from Perkiomen Prep and Dickinson College in 1952.

He was employed by the DuPont Company from 1952 in Textile Fibers and Marketing, and worked in Seaford, DE, Kinston, NC, and Wilmington, DE, until his retirement in 1985.

He enjoyed playing golf at the Dupont Country Club with fellow retirees and friends before and after retirement.

Jack was a parishioner of St. John the Beloved Catholic Church from 1958 until his death.

Jack was preceded in death in 1993 by his beloved spouse, Catherine "Kay" (Sullivan), originally of Tamaqua, PA.

They met in 1946 while spectators at a local football game and married in 1950.

Jack remembered not only their wedding anniversary, but also remembered the exact date he met Kay.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Daniel of Palmerton, PA., James of Coaldale, and his sister, Rita Miller, of Coaldale.

He is survived by his beloved sister, Joan Wildoner, of Jim Thorpe, PA, and many dear nieces and nephews.

He is also survived by his children, Bernard J. O'Donnell of Wilmington, and Karen M. Warner of Newark; and his beloved grandchildren, Brian Warner, and Aileen and Daniel O'Donnell.

Family and friends may call between 7 and 9 pm on Thursday evening, August 5, at MEALEY FUNERAL HOME, Limestone and Milltown Roads, Wilmington.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Saint John the Beloved Catholic Church on Milltown Road at 10 am on Friday, August 6, 2004.

Internment will immediately follow at All Saints cemetery, Wilmington.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to either the American Heart Association, or St. John the Beloved Parish.

Hank William Edwards

Age 39, of Townsend, DE died July 30, 2004.

He is survived by his wife of 14 years, Karen A. Edwards of Townsend, DE; 1 daughter Torie Edwards of Townsend, DE; his mother, Margaret Ann Bennett and step-father C. Leonard Bennett, both of Galena, MD; and his grandmother, Mary V. Semans of Galena, MD.

Services will be held at 1 pm on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 at the FELLOWS HELFENBEIN & NEWNAM funeral home, 370 W. Cypress St., Millington, MD.

A visitation will be held from 6-8pm on Tuesday, August 3, 2004 and also 1 hour prior to the service.

Interment will be held in Mt. Olive cemetery in Sandtown, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be sent to PNC Bank, Smyrna, DE for the Victoria Ann Edwards Educational Fund, which will be used for his daughter's schooling.
