Mary Virginia Giuttari
A memorial service for Mary Virginia Giuttari, 77, was held on Thursday, April 13 at Torbert Funeral Chapel, Dover . She died on Sunday, April 9, at her home in Dover.
Mrs. Giuttari was born on Feb. 17, 1923 in Frederica to the late Oscar and Margaret Wix and was a lifelong resident of Dover. She was a homemaker. She loved to fish, crab and take short weekend trips. Mrs. Giuttari also loved cooking, sewing and knitting. She was a member of the Frederica United Methodist Church and Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Nicholas Giuttari of Dover, a son, Norman L. Holston of Newark; two daughters, Virginia L. Ford of Willow Grove and Margaret Groff of Kentwood; a sister, Jean Romano of Bear; a brother, William Gottorf of Dover; 9 grandchildren and 12 great -grandchildren.
Interment was held in Barratt’s Chapel cemetery, Frederica.
Ray E. Hurd
Ray E. Hurd died on Tuesday, April 11, 2000 at his home in Felton. He was 84.
He was a retired pipefitter for The Local #782, in Seaford.
Mr. Hurd was an Army veteran of WWII. He was in the 224th Airborne Medics with combat missions including The Battle of the Bulge, Central Europe, and and the airborne assault at Wessel, Germany over the Rhine River.
He was in The Coast Guard Auxilliary for many years.
Mr. Hurd loved music. He sang and played the fiddle and guitar. He also enjoyed restoring old cars.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Walt and Dewey Hurd, and a sister, Lavinia Savage.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, M. Helen Hurd; three daughters, Nancy C. and Michael Peters of Frederica, Mary A. Wessel and companion Robert Fuller of Dover and Cindy Rae Veller of Dover ; one son, Richard L. of Felton; three brothers, James and Aaron Hurd, both of Milford, and Harry Hurd of Alabama; one sister, Mary Louise Carpenter of Milford; and four grandchildren.
Arrangements were handled by Berry-Short Funeral Home, Felton.
A memorial service for family and friends will be held at a latter date.
Wilbur J. "Bill" Bulkley
A funeral service for Wilbur J. "Bill" Bulkley, 83, of Dover was held on Saturday, April 15, 2000 at Christ Episcopal Church in Dover.
Mr. Bulkley died on Tuesday, April 11 at Kent General Hospital, Dover.
Mr. Bulkley was born on June 15, 1916 in Savona, New York, the son of the late Roy C. and Maude Harris Bulkley. He graduated from the Nebraska
Wesleyan University and attended the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran and had served as a medic in North Africa and Italy during World War II.
Mr. Bulkley worked for the Social Security Administration and moved to Dover in 1962 to be the manager of the Social Security District Office for Kent and Sussex counties. He retired in 1980.
In 1994 he received the Lifetime Humanitarian Award and the Governor’s Outstanding Volunteer Award recognizing him for over 12,500 hours of service to his community during s 40 year period. He was active in many volunteer organizations including the Foster Grandparents program; the Salvation Army where for many years he organized volunteers who raised money at Christmas time; and was a volunteer for 15 years in the emergency room at Kent General Hospital. For many years he was a leader in Dover’s annual United Way Fund drive.
Mr. Bulkley was a member of the Christ Episcopal Church in Dover and the Union Lodge AF & AM #7 in Dover, where he served as Chaplain. He enjoyed sailing and racing his Lightning sailboat and was a longtime member and past Commodore of the Rehoboth Bay Sailing Association.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Thomasena; a daughter, Susan Bulkley Kellom of Alexandria, Va; a son, David of Ardmore, PA; and a grandson, David Peter Bulkley.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributuions to the Salvation Army, 611 Forest St., Dover, De 19904 or to the Presiding Bishop’s Fund for World Relief, c/o Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 1374, Dover, DE 19903.

Dr. Beverly Davine Fairley-Harris
Services for Dr. Beverly Davine Fairley-Harris, 46, of Mitchellville, Md., formerly of Dover, were held at Great Mt. Nebo AME Church,
Upper Marlboro, Maryland. She died on Friday April 7, 2000 in Prince George’s Hospital, Claverly, Md.
Dr. Fairley-Harris was born in 1953 to Regina Richards of Dover and the late David Fairley.
She was the first black cheerleader on the Dover High School cheerleading squad, and was named Who’s Who Among American College students.
She graduated magna cum laude in 1975 while obtaining her undergraduate degree in child psychology at Bowie State University. She was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. while at Bowie. She received her master’s degree from Catholic University, Washington, D.C.
She began her career as a child psychologist, serving in Prince George’s and Fairfax counties school systems. She was employed as a child psychologist with the Montgomery County public school system for the past 13 years.
Dr. Fairley-Harris held dear in her heart and supported her home church, Emmanuel AME Church, Hartly. She had been a member of St. Paul AME Church, Washington, D.C., from 1983 to 1998. During this period she served as steward to two of her pastors and served on the steward and usher boards. She was church treasurer and a member of Majorie E. Bourne Missionary Society, where she held the position of secretary and P.M.E. leader. She assisted Rev. Louise Poag-Ray in establishing the First AME church of Gaithersburg. She was a member of the Greater Mt. Nebo AME church, the Sunday school and the Bertha Bell Missionary Society.
She is survived by her husband, Garland S. Harris; two children, Bradley Fairley-Harris and Morghen Fairley-Harris; a step-daughter, Kimberly Harris; two step-grandchildren; five sisters, Novella Brooks of Dover, Joanna Harrington of Wilmington, Romona Dorsey of Dover, Robin Baynard of Camden, Del., and Babbie Fairley of Wilmington; a brother, Isaac Fairley; two brothers-in-law, George F. Harrington of Wilmington and James E. Baynard of Camden; two uncles, Carl Watson and his wife, Janette, and Harold Watson, and his wife, Julia, all of Dover; a sister-in-law, Cashon Jackson, and her husband, Jeroda Jackson, of Seattle; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and several godchildren.
Burial was in Cheltenham Veteran’s cemetery, Cheltenham, Md.
Theodore H. Mikos
Services for Theodore H. Mikos, 88, were held on Friday, April 14 at Holy Cross Catholic Church , Dover. Mr. Mikos died on Monday April 10, 2000 in Heritage at Dover.
Mr. Mikos was born in New York, the son of the late Waleryk and Malvina Budner Mikos. He worked in masonry construction, retiring in 1976.
He was a longtime member of the New York Cement Masons Union 780. He moved to Dover form New York in 1980.
Mr. Mikos was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Mikos in 1986. He is survived by a daughter, Lida Ann Smith,and her husband, Kenneth of Dover; a son, Edward A. Mikos, and his wife, Alex of Crystal Lake, Ill.; seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.
Arrangements were by Michael J. Ambruso Funeral Home, Dover.
Burial was in Holy Cross cemetery, Dover.
Pearl M. Hutson
Services for Pearl M. Hutson, 65, of Felton were held on Thursday, April 13 at Melvin Funeral Home, Harrington. Mrs. Hutson died on Sunday, April 9, 2000 at home.
Mrs. Hutson was born in Goldsboro, Md., the daughter of Rosie Larimore of Goldsboro, and the late Clark Smith.
She worked at the Inland Container Co. in Harrington as a packer for 19 years.
She enjoyed fishing, gardening and cruising with her friends. She was an avid NASCAR fan, and a doll and basket collector. She enjoyed the summertime, cookouts and picnics with her friends and family.
Mrs. Hutson was a member of Harrington Moose Lodge 534 and Harrington American Legion Post CKRT7.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her companion and "handyman," Charles Slaughter of Felton; a son, Robert W. Rosser, and his fiancé, Jane Stubbs of Felton; three daughters, Christal L. Cannon, and her husband, George, of Hartly; Dorothy M. Seeney and her fiancé, Robert Krebel of Hartly, and Teresa L. Moore of Dover; and a son-in-law, David Moore of Felton; four sisters, Margaret Dehorty of Clayton, Edith Edwards of Felton, Doris Young of Smyrna and Sarah Jane Cahall of Goldsboro, Md.; an aunt, Betty Bradley of Goldsboro, Md. ; five grandchildren, George Cannon III, Stacy Cannon, Robert Rosser, Tina Rosser and Harley Seeney; two great-grandchildren: Taylor and Robert Rosser IV; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Burial was held in Hollywood cemetery, Harrington.
Robert G. Semans
A funeral service for Robert G. Semans, 86, of Houston was held onTuesday, April 18 at the Pippin Funeral Home, Wyoming. Mr. Semans died on Friday April 14, 2000 at home.
Mr. Semans was born in 1914 in Whitleysburg, Delaware, son of the late Louder and Christina Larrimore Semans.
He retired from Playtex, Dover after 37 years of service. Mr. Semans’s hand was used as a mold for the extra large Playtex glove and he was a member of the 25 Year Club.
Mr. Semans attended school at Greensboro, Md. He was a member of Wilmington Trap Shooting Association and the Indian River Water Sports Club.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and his garden.
Mr. Semans was preceded in death by a son, Henry C. Semans; a daughter, Christine E. Semans; two brothers, Clayton Semans and Nicholas L. Semans.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Semans; four daughters: Janice Chilcote of Dover, Alice E. Coventry of Middletown, Margaret A. Bennett of Church Hill, Md. and Kathleen Y. LaSage of Naples, Forida; a brother, H. Berlin Semans of Dover; 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Burial will be in The Old School Baptist Church cemetery, Sandtown.
Phyllis M. Marvel
A memorial service for Phyllis M. Marvel,76, of Cheswold, was held on Tuesday, April 18 at Asbury United Methodist Church, Harrington. Mrs. Marvel died on Friday, April 14, 2000 at Capital Nursing Home, Dover.
Mrs. Marvel was born in Harrington, the daughter of the late Joseph A. and Arta Baker Masten.
She graduated from Harringtron High School in 1941 and from Beacom College in Wilmington in 1942.
She worked as an office clerk for the Modern Maturity Center, Dover for 17 years, until her illness.
Mrs. Marvel Had been a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, Dover, the Wesley United Methodist Church Women and the Harrington High School Alumni Association.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Fred Marvel in 1982, and a daughter, Donna F. Breeding in 1994.
She is survived by a daughter, Fredda M. Richards and her fiancé, Douglas Vennard of Dover; a son, the Rev. Fred Gary Marvel and his wife, Carol, of Blacksburg, Va.; a brother, W. Ray Masten of Millsboro; a sister, D. Josephine Danna of New Castle; four grandchildren, Joseph P. Zelano, Raymond P. Zelano, Tara L. Fowler and Dallas M. James; two treat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Arrangements were by Mc Knatt Funeral Home, Harrington.
Burial was in Hollywood cemetery, Harrington.
