William O. Melson,
Punkin Chunkin founder
William O. “Trey” Melson, III, age 53, died Monday August 9, 2004 at the Beebe Medical Center in Lewes. Born in Rehoboth Beach, Trey was a self employed Master Plumber and a member of the Plumber & Pipe Fitter’s Union # 782 of Seaford. He was one of the founders and a past champion of the “Punkin Chunkin” event held every year since 1986.
He is survived by his wife, Julia; his parents, Betty and William O. Melson; step sons, Shawn and Stephen Brooks, and James Macintire; two daughters, Patricia L. Nelson and Laura E. Caswell; stepdaughter, Nicole Brooks; a sister, Terry M. Brewster and her husband Howard Jr.; and six grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14 at at the chapel of Melson Funeral Services on Long Neck Road in Long Neck, where friends may call on Friday evening from 6-8 p.m. Interment will be in the Bethel Methodist cemetery
in Lewes.

James W. Flood Sr.,
New York native
James W. Flood Sr., 92, of Laurel, died Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at Seaford Center Genesis Elder Care.
Mr. Flood was born in Staten Island, N.J., to Henry P. and Margaret T. Flood.
He was retired from the Laurel Distributors/Fessenden Hall of Delaware. He was a member of the Laurel Exchange Club and the Salisbury Exchange Club. He sang in his church choir for many years and also held several offices in the church. He was a member and past president of the Laurel Fire Hall.
He was preceded in death by his stepson, Edward Boyce; and a sister, Dorothy.
He is survived by his wife, Estella V. Flood; his sons, Gary W. and his wife Debbie of Laurel and James W. Jr. of Towson, Md.; a daughter, Patricia Manolakis of Lewes; grandchildren Steven Flood, Heather Ruark, Tammy Bragdon, Michael Manolakis and Andrew and Annie Flood; eight great-grandchildren; a stepson, Jake Boyce of Seaford; special nieces Sister Mary Ellen Simmons, Sister Julian and Sister Anne; and several stepgrandchildren.
Services will beheld at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 13, at Christ United Methodist Church, Laurel, followed by burial in Odd Fellows cemetery , Laurel.

Belle Weber,
family matriarch
Belle Weber, 90, a resident of Harbor Healthcare and Rehabilitation, originally from Vineland, N.J., died Friday, Aug. 6, 2004.
Mrs. Weber was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend.
She survived by two sons, Allen Weber and his wife Suzanne, and Steven Weber; two granddaughters, Melissa Bryne and her husband Peter and Wendy Foster Weber and her husband Jon; four great-grandchildren, Bailey, Clayton, Kelsey and Ciarra; nieces, nephews and many special friends.
Services were held Aug. 8.
Sara V. Case,
Blue Cross retiree
Sara V. Case, 87, of Rehoboth, died Monday, Aug. 9, 2004, at home.
Mrs. Case was born in Felton, the daughter of the late Thomas B. and Ethel Tomlinson Case.
She retired from Blue Cross and Blue Shield as an account representative. She was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Rehoboth and served as an Elder. She was also a member of Lend a Hand.
She is survived by her nieces Marian Constantino of Laurel and Ruth Jensen of Milton.
A committal service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Aug. 13, at Barratt’s Chapel cemetery , Frederica. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Aug. 16, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, King Charles Ave., Rehoboth Beach.

Thomas A. Stevenson,
retired mechanic
Thomas Alden Stevenson, 57, of Georgetown, died Sunday, Aug. 8, 2004, at home.
Mr. Stevenson was born in Lewes, the son of the late William D. and Sara Short Stevenson.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a mechanic for the Sussex County Council for five years. He enjoyed collecting toy tractors and building miniature farm buildings. He attended Asbury United Methodist Church in Georgetown.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Richard D. Stevenson.
He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Martha English Stevenson; a daughter, Tami Hudson of Georgetown; a stepson, Robert Eye of Georgetown; two brothers, Bill Stevenson and Harold Stevenson, both of Georgetown; three sisters, Kate Hedges of Mankato, Minn., Jane Day of Georgetown and Ann Faucett of Millsboro; two aunts, Ann Wilson of Lewes and Iva Booth of Georgetown; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held at Short Funeral Services, Georgetown, with burial in Carey’s cemetery.
Melvin James Smith,
Vietnam veteran
Melvin James Smith passed away quietly Thursday Aug. 12, 2004, at his residence in Rehoboth Beach, after a long battle with cancer.
"Mel" was born Nov. 6, 1945. in Lewes. He was the youngest child of Ella M. and Morris (Tuffy) Smith. Mel was a veteran of the Vietnam War. The last ship on which he served was the U.S.S. John McCain. He was a member of the the VFW Post 7447 of Rehoboth Beach. Mel was a drywall contractor working up state as well as locally. He was currently employed by the Dollar General Store in Dewey Beach. His natural sense of humor contributed to his hobby in cartoon sketching and entertainment among friends.
Mr. Smith was preceeded in death by his parents and grandparents: Elizabeth and Murray Joseph of Lewes, and Ida and Van Smith of Salisbury, Md. He is survived by four children, Rebecca Rose and her husband Stephen of Dover, Melvin J. Smith Jr. and his wife Dana of New Jersey, Amanda Smith and Adam Smith, both of Newark; two sisters, Bonnie S. Peterson and Joy E. Smith, both of Lewes; grandchildren Cody Rose, Morgan Rose and Sandra Smith; and his devoted companion of 20 years, Rose Marie Andell of Rehoboth Beach.
A memorial service will be at 7 p.m., Sunday Aug. 15, at Groome United Methodist Church on Dewey Avenue and Savannah Road in Lewes, with the Rev. William Hopkins officiating. Memorial contributions are suggested to Compassionate Care, 201B West DuPont Highway, Millsboro, DE 19966.

Grace W. McElhinney,
retired homemaker
Grace Waddington McElhinney, 84, of Westminister, Dover, died Wednesday, Aug. 11, 2004, in her niece's home surrounded by family. She will be sadly missed.
Mrs. McElhinney was born August 23, 1919, the daughter of the late Wilfrid and Lillian Waddington. She graduated from A.I. DuPont High School in 1937. She was a homemaker.
In addition to her parents, her husband of 54 years, John "Jack" H. McElhinney and a sister, Vera Wallwark, preceded her in death.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, James and Ann McElhinney of New Castle; a grandson, John of Texas; a granddaughter, Melissa of Texas; three sister-in-laws, Dorothy Bardo of Sarasota, Fla.; Joan Pajerowski of Smyrna, Esther McElhinney of Newark; a brother-in-law, Carmen Nacchia of Wilmington; several nieces and nephews and a special friend and niece, Patricia Byler of Dover.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 14, in Silverbrook cemetery , Wilmington.

Marie Megee Caramalis,
avid reader, devoted to family
Marie Megee Caramalis of Lakeland, Fla, formerly of Milton, died August. 5, 2004, of heart failure at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. She was 76.
Mrs. Caramalis was born April 29, 1928 in Philadelphia, daughter of the late Frank and Lulu Megee. She was an avid reader and a devoted mother and grandmother. She enjoyed coming back home to Delaware during her summer vacations and spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by her two sons and daughter-in-laws, John J. Caramalis and wife Joan of Lakeland, Peter N. Caramalis and wife Tracy of Orlando, Fla,; two brothers, Herman Megee of Millsboro, John Megee and wife Betty Jean of Milton, three sisters, Evelyn Forst and Winifred parkhill of Milton, Edith Ellingsworth and her husband Jack of Georgetown, a special grandson, Brent Caramalis of Orlando; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services in Lakeland were provided by Health Funeral Chapel. Memorial services in Milton will be held at a later date and will be at the convenience of the family.
James Oliver Clendaniel,

James Oliver Clendaniel, 71, of Milford, died Saturday, July 31, 2004, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Clendaniel was born June 26, 1933, in Milford, son of the late Joshua B. Clendaniel Sr. and Sallie Dawson Clendaniel.
He worked for General Foods in Dover for about 26 years and was currently working for Bennett Security in Dover.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting, doing yard work and was famous for his gardening.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Dorothy Wooters Clendaniel; two daughters and two sons-in-law, Diane and Mike Veal of Upper Marlboro, Md. and Annette and Michael Towers of Ellendale; four grandchildren; a great-grandson; and nine brothers and sisters, Charles Clendaniel and Joshua Clendaniel, both of Ellendale, Catherine Voshell of Smyrna, Elois Hall of Milford, Edna Chipman of Lewes, Robert Clendaniel of Milford, Jean McMasters of Seaford, Ruth Heinen of Harrington and Laura Welch of Milford.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, at Fleischuaer Funeral Home, Greenwood, where friends may call one hour earlier. Burial will be in Ellendale cemetery , Ellendale.
Bhramara Heid
university professor
Bhramara Heid, 60, of Chevy Chase, Md., died Friday, July 30 at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda. She lived in the Washington, D.C. area for most of her life and spent summers in Rehoboth Beach, both as an enthusiastic beach lover and when visiting her children and grandchildren.
Ms. Heid was born Lucille Fagret Lane in Baltimore. The daughter of a Naval officer, she lived in New York City, Carlisle, San Francisco, Mount Vernon, London and Washington, D.C., where her family settled permanently in 1958.
She graduated from Immaculata High School in 1961 and studied ballet in San Francisco, London and at the Washington School of Ballet.
Ms. Heid earned a bachelor’s degree in interior design from the University of Maryland, College Park, in 1983. She owned her own residential design business, J H Associates, taught design history and color theory at the University of Maryland, College Park, and most recently, inspired students as a professor of interior design at Montgomery College in Rockville, Md. A particular honor and joy was her role as faculty advisor for the interior design student club and the students who participated in the annual National Symphony Orchestra Designer Showhouse. Montgomery College has established the Bhramara Heid Interior Design Scholarship and Award Fund in her honor.
She is survived by three children, Wendel Heid of Lewes; Alexander Stein, who attends Portland State University in Oregon; and Victoria Hall of Bethesda, Md.; four grandchildren; and two brothers.
A private graveside ceremony was held at Epworth Methodist cemetery
in Rehoboth. A memorial service will be held at Real Life Church in Washington, D.C.

Betty Bailey Moore,
Moose chapter founder
Betty Bailey Moore, 81, of Long Neck, died Friday, July 30, 2004, at home.
Mrs. Moore was the widow of Arthur “Sug” Moore, who died in 1990 and the daughter of James Bailey and Lillian Bailey Craig.
She had worked in customer service and as a plant scheduler for Inland Container in Newark until 1974. She was a founding member, charter member and life member of the Women of the Moose chapter 969 of Elkton, Md, where she served as past senior regent; she also served as bar steward at the lodge until she retired at age 74. She was a member of the Singerly Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, where she served as president in 1954 and 1961, vice president in 1953 and 1960, treasurer in 1962, 1963 and 1964 and recording secretary. She was a member of the American Legion Cecil Post 15 Ladies Auxiliary and was past president of Elkton Little League Auxiliary. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Elkton, MD.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Taylor Welch.
Mrs. Moore is survived by her daughter, Dianne Hampton Temple and her husband Richard of Long Neck; her son, Arthur Rodney Moore Jr. and his wife Sybil of Medford, N.J.; three grandsons, Mark Welch, John D’Angelo and Brian D’Angelo; two granddaughters, Sue Ellen Taylor and Lorrie Lovenstein; 11 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Aug. 4, at the Andrew G. Gee Funeral Home, 259 East Main Street, Elkton, Md., where friends may call two hours prior, with burial in Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Cherry Hill, Md.

Christopher Lennon Hamilton,

Christopher Lennon Hamilton, 31, of Smyrna, died Thursday, July 29, 2004, at home.
Mr. Hamilton was born March 21, 1973, in Dover, the son of Paul Hamilton of Hartly and Cheryl Skinner of Smyrna. He enjoyed motorcycles, cars, making models and collecting Hot Wheels with his brothers.
His heartwarming smile and unconditional acceptance of people were overwhelming. Lennon’s teasing always made everyone at ease and he will never be forgotten for the love he passed to all.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his stepfather, John Skinner; two brothers, Michael Skinner II and Matthew Skinner, both of Smyrna; his paternal grandmother, Margaret Reed Edge of Hartly; his maternal grandparents, Barbara and Robert Rider of Rehoboth Beach and Les Thompson of Costa Mesa, Calif.; and many loving aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Services were held at First Presbyterian Church, Smyrna, with burial private.
Norman C. Hamstead,

Norman C. Hamstead, 75, of Greenwood, died Thursday, July 29, 2004, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Hamstead was born Dec. 15, 1928, in Kingwood, Va., the son of the late Alpha and Mary Judy Hamstead.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Barbara Harrison Hamstead; a son and daughter-in-law, Norman K. and Kathy Hamstead of Milford; a daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Mike Breeding of Lewes; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Pearldean Parker of Greenwood, Catherine and Walter Cunnington of Chandler, Ariz., Elouise and Jack Cunnington and Eleanor and Bob Bennett of Bridgeville.
Graveside services were held in St. Johnstown cemetery , Greenwood.
