Boot Camp commander
Richard Joseph “Mr. Football” “Kool-Aid Man” Tabler, 46, of Lewes, died Thursday, April 14, 2004, in Lewes Convalescent Center.
Mr. Tabler was born Feb. 9, 1959, in Zanesville, Ohio.
He graduated from Tri Valley High School. He received his undergraduate degrees in both psychology and criminal justice from Muskingum College, where he also played football. He later continued his education at the University of Ann Arbor in Michigan, where he conducted extensive criminology research in Detroit, and received his master’s degree.
He taught in the inmate education program at Wilmington College in Ohio. He was also a guard at the Pickway penal facility in Ohio. He moved to Delaware in 1989, where he worked for the Department of Probation and Parole, later working for the Department of Corrections at Gander Hill in Wilmington, where he was a staff lieutenant. He moved to Sussex County in 1991, where he was a captain at the Sussex Correctional Institution.
He was most proud of his work as commander of Delaware’s first boot camp located in Sussex County. Not only was he commander, but he was the creative mind behind the boot camp’s construction and philosophy. After years of research and the meticulous monitoring of every step of the process, he was proud to call the boot camp his brainchild and lobbied diligently and consistently for Delaware citizens’ right to maintain the existence of the boot camp in Sussex County.
He was a member of the Friendship Baptist Church, where he was baptized, and was also a member of the male chorus.
He is survived by his wife, Graceleane Gibbs-Tabler; a loving daughter, Charli Josée Tabler; an adoring son, Joseph Emmanuel Tabler; his parents, Mary Celestine and Richard Dean Tabler; a brother and sister-in-law, Martin Dean and Lisa Tabler of Columbus, Ohio; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Celestine Ann Ward of Nashport, Ohio, Cynthia Kay Price of Columbus and Regina and Jeff Hardin of Columbus; two uncles, Norman Tibbs and Buck Mael; two aunts, Joe-Ellen Mael and Kathy Tibbs; father-in-law, Charles Gibbs of Lewes; eight sisters-in-law, Ethel Johnson of Dover, Patricia Hanzer of Bear, Victoria C. Gibbs of Newark, Tecola Gibbs, Charlotte Gibbs, Wanda Witherspoon and Claudia Johnson, all of Lewes, and Kathy Grandison of Bridgeville; seven brothers-in-law, Harold Johnson of Bridgeville, Joseph Gibbs of Clio, Mich., Clifton Gibbs and Tyrone Gibbs, both of Lewes, Wayne Gibbs of Salisbury, Md., Thomas Gibbs of Georgetown and James Witherspoon of Maryland; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Services were held at Friendship Baptist Church, Lewes.
Jean A. Fried,
former Rehoboth resident
Jean A. Fried, 58, of Salisbury, Md., passed away peacefully after a long illness, Wednesday, April 13, 2005, in Rochester, Minn.
Born in Norristown, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Louis and Mary Adelman. She made her home in Salisbury for 16 years, after moving from Rehoboth Beach.
In Salisbury, she changed her career from being a bookstore manager to a travel agent. She was a member of CORE, the Congress of Racial Quality, she was a cofounder of a NOW chapter, League of Women Voters and worked on various Democratic campaigns. She had a commitment for justice and equality for people and was committed to social change. She had a great love of history and literature.
She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Wayne Fried of Salisbury, Md.; a brother, Roger Adelman of Washington, D.C.; and her beloved dog, Chico.
Services will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 20, at Holloway Funeral Home. Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m., Wednesday. Interment will be at Spring Hill Memory Gardens in Hebron, Md.

William Thomas “Russ” Conaway,
retired maintenance technician
William Thomas “Russ” Conaway, 63, of Harrington, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at home.
Mr. Conaway was born Oct. 30, 1941, in Beebe Medical Center, Lewes, son of Sarah Lavinia Conaway and family of Millsboro. After the death of his mother, he was raised in Harrington by the only parent he ever knew and loved passionately, Lula Perry Russ, along with his brothers, Harold and Samuel and his sister, Mary Ellen.
He attended Pierre S. DuPont School through eighth grade and graduated from William C. Jason High School.
He married the love of his life, Shirley Ann Taylor, in 1968 and they had three beautiful children, Vernon, Russell and Andrea.
He worked for more than 20 years for the state of Delaware as a maintenance technician for the Delaware State Police Troop 5. In his spare time, he loved horseshoes, billiards, fishing and bowling.
Mr. Conaway was a member of the Mt. Carmel Seventh Day Adventist Church, Harrington, where he actively served as an elder and as a member of the Sermonettes. He also served in many capacities as a youth worker.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Shirley Ann Taylor Conaway of Harrington; his two sons, Vernon Conaway of Atlanta and Russell Conaway of Harrington; two daughters, Andrea Conaway of Atlanta and Sharon Conaway of Harrington; three granddaughters, Shakeiera, Christina and Shaylene; a grandson, Ashton; his mother, Lula Perry Russ of Harrington; a sister, Mary Ellen Henderson of Milford; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Harold “Sonny” Russ and Samuel Lee and Lula Russ of Indiana; his adoptive parents, Mom and Papa Charles of Lincoln; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
Services were held at Mt. Carmel Seventh Day Adventist Church, with burial in Frederica cemetery.

Shirley A. (Baldwin) Bouch,

Shirley A. (Baldwin) Bouch, 72, of Lewes and formerly of Breezewood, Pa., died Thursday, April 14, 2005, in Harbor Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Lewes, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Mrs. Bouch had served in many different career capacities, including 15 years as a rural letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Pennsylvania and Maryland, assisting in the family service stations business as a bookkeeper, as co-owner of Shirley’s Fabrics of Bedford, Pa. and most notably as the owner and operator of Wyndhaven Kennels in Breezewood, specializing in the raising of Shelties.
She was a member of Lewes Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Baldwin Sr. and Gertrude Sanders Baldwin.
She is survived by her husband of 53 years, John A. Bouch; two daughters, Carl Berghen of San Francisco and Linda McKenna of Mt. Airy, Md.; two sons, John T. Bouch of Everett, Pa. and Bruce D. Bouch of Finksburg, Md.; a brother, Walter L. Baldwin Jr. of Texas; and six grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at Lewes Presbyterian Church cemetery , Lewes.

Dr. Joseph Elliott,
Laurel physician
Dr. Joseph Elliott, 82, died Thursday, April 14, 2005, at the Seaford Center of Genesis Elder Care.
Born Jan. 5, 1923 in Laurel, he was a son of the late Dr. John Roscoe Elliott and Mary Catherine McGarry Elliott.
Dr. Elliott graduated from Laurel High School in 1939, Western Maryland College in 1943 and Cornell Medical College in 1948. He interned at the Delaware Hospital in Wilmington and did a residency at Camden Memorial Hospital in Parksburg, W.Va.
In 1950, he began medical practice with his father in Laurel; they practiced together for 15 years. In total, the Drs. Elliott practiced 90 years of medicine in Laurel.
He served in the U.S. Army in 1951 and was stationed as a medical office in the Azores Islands, Portugal. He was a member of the Laurel American Legion, Post 19.
He was active in the Medical Society of Delaware and was president of the medical staff at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford, from 1968-69, president of the Sussex County Medical Society and president of the Delaware Medical Society in 1972. He was devoted to the Laurel High School football team and was its home physician for 40 years. In 1991, he was named Citizen of the Year in Laurel.
He also was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Laurel, where he served as a youth counselor and later as a trustee.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Louise Elliott; three sons, Joseph A. Jr. and his wife Cindy of Flanders, N.J., and their children Justin and Lauren Elliott; John David Elliott of Milton; and Mark J. Elliott and his wife Rose of Tampa, Fla. and their children Ian and Ryan Elliott; a brother, James I. Elliott; and many nieces and nephews.
Services were held at Christ United Methodist Church, Laurel, with burial with military honors at Odd Fellows cemetery , Laurel.

Doris Chandler LeGates,
retired custodian
Doris Chandler LeGates, 78, of Milton, died Thursday, April 14, 2005, at home.
Mrs. LeGates was born in Lincoln, daughter of the late Preston and Nellie Warrington Chandler.
She was a custodian for Cape Henlopen High School, retiring in 1993. She had also worked for the Collins Clothing Store in Milton and J.C. Penney in Milford.
She enjoyed gardening and planting flowers.
Mrs. LeGates was a member of the Christian Tabernacle in Lincoln, where she was a member of the choir.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Clifford LeGates, in 1988.
She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Barbara Hitchens of Georgetown and Catherine G. and Donald Carey of Milton; a grandchild, Faith Walrath; and two great-grandchildren, Ethan Cash and Emily Cash.
Services were held from the Chapel of Short Funeral Services, Milton, with burial in Odd Fellows cemetery , Milton.

Bill R. Myers,
retired from NIH
Bill R. Myers, 85, of Lewes, died Wednesday, April 13, 2005, at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes after a short illness.
Mr. Myers was born in Montgomery, W.Va. He enlisted right after Pearl Harbor and served three years in the Army Air Corps, and was medically discharged with the rank of Staff Sergeant.
He graduated as an electrical engineer from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. He retired in 1974 after 30 years working for the federal government, most of the time at the National Institute of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Md. He continued to work after retirement as a consultant for the State Department for another 10 years. Mr. Myers was a member of Jefferson Lodge #15 in Lewes; and a lifetime member of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry for the Southern Jurisdiction. He was also a lifetime member of the Izaak Walton League of America in Damascus, Md. He had worked with his two sons in Boy Scouts as they were growing up. When he lived in Virginia after retirement, he was an active member of the volunteer fire department in Richardsville, Va. He was a member of Conley’s United Methodist Church near Lewes.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Eleanor, of California; and his oldest son, William, of Germantown, Md.
Bill is survived by his wife of 60 years, Helen (Schillen) Myers; his daughter-in-law, Sheila (son William’s widow), a son Thomas T. Myers and wife Nancy of Germantown, Md.; a daughter Catherine Treadway of Houston, Texas; a grandson, Travis W. Myers of Dallas , Texas; grandson, Stephen T. Myers and his wife Cynthia of Damascus, Md., and their three children, Tyler, Sydnee and Kassidy; and a granddaughter, Heather Stone and her husband Steve of Mt. Airy, Md., and their two children Anabelle and Bryan.
A memorial service for the family will be held at the Chapel at Delaware Veterans cemetery
South, Millsboro, DE, with Rev. Randy Booth officiating. A public memorial service will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, April 21 at Conley’s Chapel Church, Robinsville Road, near Angola, Lewes, with a reception following in the Social Hall.

Ruth E. (Newcomb) Hahn,

Ruth E. (Newcomb) Hahn, 74, of Lewes, died Saturday, April 10, 2005, at Coastal Hospice, Salisbury, Md.
Mrs. Hahn was born Aug. 3, 1930 in Port Norris, N.J. She was a fun loving, strong-willed and independent woman with a heart of gold. She worked as a waitress most of her life and later held many management positions. She enjoyed spending time with her family, antique dealing and displaying her loving passion for animals. She was a collector of “all.”
She is survived by her daughter, Edith Arcuri and her husband Joseph; her son, Theodore and his husband Theresa; a sister Buena Kling and her husband Joseph; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; close friends Ellen Mast and Rachie Landesman; and many other loving family members.
The family would like to thank Coastal Hospice for all its services.
To honor Ruth’s wishes there will be no funeral services.

Charles E. Conaway Jr.,

Charles E. Conaway Jr., 60, of Millsboro, died Saturday, April 16, 2005, at home.
Mr. Conaway was born June 22, 1944, the son of the late Charles E. Conaway Sr. and Tabitha F. Donaway Conaway. He was a retired state inspector with the Delaware Department of Transportation. He was a member of Indian Mission United Methodist Church and a loving husband who also loved his children.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Brower Conaway of Millsboro; two stepdaughters, Charlotte Rogozisnki and Christa Botti, both of New Brunswick, N.J.; and a stepson, Charles Rogozinski of Orlando, Fla.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, April 20, at Indian Mission United Methodist Church, Millsboro, with the Rev. Larry Ganster officiating, where friends may call at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Indian Mission cemetery.

Robert W. Conaway, 53, of Milford, died Friday, April 15, 2005, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital. Mr. Conaway was born April 11, 1952, the son of thee late William W. Conaway and Mary Walls Conaway Carey. He was employed with Atlantic Concrete in Milford for 12 years. He left there to start his own business subcontracting work as a splicer for the telephone companies that he operated for four years. Most recently, he was employed as a foreman with Utility Lines Construction Services, Inc. of Milton, where he had worked for six years. He loved to ride his motorcycle and enjoyed the game of golf. He was preceded in death by a half-brother, Charlie L. Carey; and a half-sister, Betty J. Carey. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Kathy L. Conaway; a son, Robert W. Conaway Jr. of Salisbury, Md.; a stepson, and his girlfriend, Craig Passwaters and Tammy Bonanni, both of Milford; two daughters, Crystal Scarfo of Lewes and Tanya VanGorder of Harrington; a brother, E. Joseph Conaway of Lincoln; five half-brothers, John W. Carey of Milford, Donald L. Carey of Bridgeville, Harry O. Carey of Milford, John Rhodes Carey of Oxford, Pa. and Chester Walls of Bridgeville; four half-sisters, Mary E. Carolyn O. “Carol” Wright, 74, of Silver Spring, Md. and formerly of Lewes and a long-time member of Rehoboth Art League, died Tuesday, April 12, 2005.
She was the beloved wife of Jacob Lockwood Wright; the mother of Richard E. Oberlin and his wife, Sue, of Nucla, Co., Carol W. Bazis and her husband, Mike, of Burtonsville, Md., and Barbara A. Baskin and her husband, Jeff, of Rockville, Md.; and the late John N. Oberlin; the grandmother of John, Jacob, Joe, Nicholas and Lily; sister of Dorothy Womble of Silver Spring, Md., Lorraine Middleton of Washington, D.C. and the late Margaret Hendricks; and sister-in-law of Jane Gott of Lewes.
