Shirley Mae Maddox,

Shirley Mae Maddox, 53, of Millsboro, died Tuesday, May 10, 2005, in Christiana Hospital, Stanton.
Mrs. Maddox was born Feb. 8, 1952 in Millsboro. She received her education in Millsboro Elementary, Millsboro, and graduated from Sussex Central High School in Georgetown in 1970. She later attended Delaware Technical & Community College, Georgetown, where she received many certificates and awards in the childcare field, including the most recent, a certificate of completion of apprenticeship as childcare development specialist.
She previously worked at the National Register Cashier in Millsboro and Allen Foods in Harbeson. By the grace of God, in 1997, she started her own home day care, Arms of Love, which she single-handedly operated until her illness. She was actively involved within her church and throughout the community. She was always willing to lend a helping hand, and was definitely one who anyone could depend on. She truly loved and adored all children, because to them she was always Mrs. Shirley. The Lord did bless her with two beautiful children of her own, whom she cherished more than anything. She was a devoted member of St. John 2nd Baptist Church in Millsboro, where she served as a pastor’s aide and a member, as well as the treasurer of the C.N. Sample Gospel Choir.
She is survived by her husband, Carey Maddox of Millsboro, whom she married in 1986; a daughter, Valerie Belfield of Portland, Tenn.; a son, John Belfield of Millsboro; two stepdaughters, Kirsten Brown and Christina Maddox, both of Crisfield, Md.; her bother, Mae Fannie Belfield of Federalsburg; three brothers, Charles Belfield Jr. of Millsboro, Arthur Belfield of Roxana and Thomas Belfield of Milton; five sisters and two brothers-in-law, Lovie Belfield of Lincoln, Okla. and Joseph Waples of Georgetown, Michelle Belfield of Easton, Md. and Josephine and Frank Williams and Gloria Ann Belfield, all of Federalsburg; eight grandchildren, James Belfield, Ashley Belfield, Johnesha Belfield, Daryl Muriel, Nathaniel Muriel, Nevon Muriel, Christopher Gail and Ariena Maddox; a great-grandson, Omarion Belfield; two brothers-in-law and their wives, Donald and Terri Maddox and Darnell and Antoinette Maddox, all of Maryland; an uncle, George Bishop of Millsboro; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Services were held at St. John’s 2nd Baptist Church, Millsboro, with burial in the church cemetery. Contributions are suggested to the Building Fund, St. John’s 2nd Baptist Church, P.O. Box 116, Millsboro DE 19966.
Gene G. Hastings,
retired educator; florist
Gene G. Hastings, 94, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 12, 2005, at home after a short illness.
Mrs. Hastings was born May 10, 1911 in Uniontown, Pa., to James and Kathryne O’Hanlon McWilliams. After college and marriage, she moved to Baltimore County, Md. and had a 38 year career as an educator. She started after the war as an elementary school teacher in Hebbville, Md., when teachers were scarce. After the death of her husband, Francis James Hastings in 1948, she continued her education and was promoted to assistant principal at Johnnycake Elementary School in Catonsville, Md. She then went into supervision and retired in 1975 as a Supervisor of Linguistics for Elementary Education for Baltimore County Public Schools. She then fulfilled a desire for a flower shop and she and her daughter, Sally Gregg, opened Silk & Sand Florist in Rehoboth Beach in 1981, where she worked until her retirement in 1998. Gene was preceded in death by her husband Francis, and her longtime companion of 25 years, Dr. Gilbert Yoffe, previously of Pikesville, Md.
She is survived by her only child, Sally Gregg and her husband James of Rehoboth Beach; a longtime companion and friend, Barbara Hahn of Lewes; and special friends Bette and David Mayer of Lewes.
The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m., Tuesday, May 17, at Atkins-Lodge Chapel, Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, with a funeral service immediately following. Burial will be in Lewes Presbyterian cemetery

Francis P. Cannatelli,

Francis “Frank” P. Cannatelli, 46, died suddenly Saturday, May 7, 2005.
Formerly of Newark, Frank graduated from Christiana High School in 1977. While there he was an accomplished athlete in football, basketball and baseball. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware in 1981 where he was president of the Theta Chi fraternity.
Frank began his professional career with the DuPont Company. In the 12 years with DuPont he and his family lived in Charleston, W. Va., Newark, Wilmington, N.C., Charleston, S. C. and New London, Pa. He and his family relocated to Rehoboth Beach in 1996 where Frank was co-owner of Peninsula Masonry.
Frank most enjoyed being with family and friends. He was an avid golfer and a member of Kings Creek Country Club. He was a sports enthusiast who loved the Red Sox, NCAA basketball and U. of D. football. He also enjoyed spending time at the beach, both locally and in North Carolina.
Frank was an active member of the Jean and Joan Fund, a voluntary fund directing donations toward patients receiving treatment at the Tunnell Cancer Center. He was most recently acting chairman of the Recognition Committee.
He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard Cannatelli Sr.
Frank is survived by his wife of 21 years, Kathleen; daughters Kristen and Colleen; a son Troy; and his mother, Julia Cannatelli. Frank is also survived by a sister, Carol and her husband, Michael Barton of Hockessin; and brothers, Len and his wife, Judy Cannatelli of Newport Beach, Ca. and Kevin and his wife, Robin Cannatelli of Fenwick Island. He was loved and will be missed by many in-laws, seven nieces and six nephews.
Friends may call at the Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorirum, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes, Sunday, May 15, from 6-8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Jude The Apostle Catholic Church on Route 1 north of Five Points, Lewes, Monday, May 16, at 10 a.m.

Lisa Diane Suthard,

Lisa Diane Suthard, 46, of Harbeson, died Saturday, May 7, 2005, at her home.
She was born in Washington, D.C., the daughter of Irvin and Gloria Diane Dalton Suthard of Milton. Lisa was a financial loan officer for K Bank in Lewes and had previously worked for Mortgage Lenders Network.
She was a loving mother and was preceded in death by her son, Shamus Welch. Lisa was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, where she was very active with the Youth Group and their activities and projects. She had also been involved in volunteer work and fundraising efforts with Sussex County Habitat for Humanity. She was a member of Quest Fitness in Lewes.
In addition to her parents, she is survived by a daughter, Brittaney Morgan Welch of Harbeson; and a sister, Susan Denise Suthard of Milton.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, may 14, in the Chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton, where friends may call after 11 a.m. Burial will be in Harbeson cemetery.

Thomas J. Arkinson,
native of New York
Thomas J. Arkinson, 86, of Chestertown, Md., died Sunday, May 8, 2005, in Heron Point, Chestertown.
Mr. Arkinson was born in the Bronx, N.Y. and raised in Yonkers, N.Y., son of the late Thomas J. Sr. and Mildred Harvey Atkinson.
He was a graduate of Manhattan College.
He served in the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborne and jumped behind enemy lines with the 507 Parachute Infantry Regiment, several hours before the land invasion began at Normandy. For their service, the unit was awarded the French Croix de Guerre. Following his other campaigns, including the Battle of the Bulge, he completed his enlistment in the European Theatre in 1945 and attended the Sorbonne in Paris.
He went to work for the American President Lines. He and his wife purchased a farm in Bucks County, Pa., where he bred and raised thoroughbred horses. He relocated his business and family to Medford, N.J., where he was once awarded the New Jersey Breeder of the Year. He retired in 1979 and moved to Church Hill.
He was an avid naturalist who was known as the Bluebird Man of Queen Anne County. He was beloved by all and known for his sense of humor and storytelling.
He was an active member of the Queen Anne County Republican Club and on the board of the Chesapeake College Foundation. He was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Margaret “Peggy” Prellwitz Arkinson, whom he married Sept. 22, 1943; a sister, Evelyn Arkinson of Chestertown; four children, Hugh W. Arkinson of Lake City, Fla., Kathleen A. Johnson of Milton, Thomas J. Arkinson III of Trenton, N.J. and Margaret A. Fuller of Centreville, Md.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services were held in Sacred Heart Church.

Frank E. Stubbins Jr.,

Frank E. Stubbins Jr., 75, of Angola Beach & Estates and formerly of Baltimore, Md., died Monday, May 9, 2005, at home.
Mr. Stubbins was born in Baltimore, son of the late Frank E. Sr. and Sarah Roberts Stubbins.
He was a dispatcher for the Department of Highways in Baltimore County for many years, until he retired and moved to Delaware in 1989. After moving, he worked part time for both Super G in Rehoboth and Delaware River & Bay Authority.
He was a member of the Lansdowne Alliance Church in Maryland and Grace Church in Milton, where he served as an elder.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, and he enjoyed traveling.
His survivors include his wife of 47 years, Chris Stubbins; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Tom Walker and Sara and Rob Sullivan, both of Baltimore; five grandchildren, Joshua Walker, Sarah Walker, Julie Walker, David Walker and Ryan Collison; and a stepgrandson, Evan Sullivan; and two sisters, Doris Anderson and Bernice Hnat, both of Baltimore.
Friends may call from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., at the Kaufman Funeral Home, 7250 Washington Blvd., Elkridge, MD, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be held in Meadowridge Memorial Park, adjacent to the funeral home.

Robert Lodge Wynn,

Robert Lodge Wynn, 34, of Ocean View, died Saturday, May 7, 2005, in Snow Hill, Md.
Mr. Wynn was currently working as a maintenance supervisor for Bethany Beach for six years. He also owned and operated R L Wynn Landscaping in Ocean View. He was an excellent guitar player and enjoyed boating and skiing. Mr. Wynn will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Nevin Wynn, in 1994; his grandmother, Virginia H. Wynn; and his grandfather, Archie Brittingham.
He is survived by his mother, Judith Brittingham Bye and her husband Michael of Charlotte, N.C.; four brothers, Patrick Brittingham Wynn of Raleigh, N.C., Christopher Scott Wynn of Atlanta, Ga., Samuel Nevin Wynn of Lewes and Theodore Wollings Bye III of Charlotte; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Services were held at St. Peters Episcopal Church, Lewes, with burial in Bethel Methodist cemetery
in Lewes.

Mildred D. Zola, 88, of Lewes and Washington, D.C., passed away peacefully on Monday, May 9, 2005 at Beebe Medical Center in Lewes.
Her husband, Benjamin G. Zola preceded her in death in 1979.
She is survived by her daughters, Connie Harris and her husband Michael of Rehoboth Beach, and Diane Couchman and her husband Mark of Lewes; four grandchildren, Harry and his wife Jen, Amy, Colleen and Mark; a great granddaughter, Abigail Elizabeth, and her care giver and best buddy of eight years.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to the American Heart Association, 600 DuPont Hwy, Georgetown, DE. 19947.

Mrs. Walls was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, John Walls of Lewes; her sons, Matthew Mazzeo and his wife Brenda of St. Augustine, Fla., Vincent Mazzeo and his wife Susan of Melbourne, Fla., Vito Mazzeo and his wife Cindy of Copperas Cove, Texas and Michael Mazzeo and his wife Joan of Lewes; two sisters, Vada Turley of Charleston, W.Va. and Ruth Veneman of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, Douglas Riffle of Bartlett, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Helen Szmanski Fitzgerald,

Helen Szmanski Fitzgerald, 90, died Wednesday, May 4, 2005, in the comfort of her family and in her home, after a brief bout with cancer.
Mrs. Fitzgerald was born in Wilmington April 20, 1915, to Helen and John Szmanski, recent immigrants from Russia and Poland. She lost both her parents at a very early age; her mother died at age 21 when Helen was two and her father died at age 31, when Helen was 10. She had a younger brother from whom she was separated at the time of her father’s death and for whom she searched unsuccessfully for the rest of her life.
She met and married her husband, Lloyd Groman Fitzgerald, in the 1940s and they shared 63 years together. Her life spanned two world wars, the roaring 20s, the Great Depression, the invention of television and space travel. Her life was long but not nearly long enough for those who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd in April, 2003; and by her grandson, Thomas Beckly, in April 2005.
She is survived by four daughters, Patricia Hager and her husband Harry of Harbeson, Nancy Clark and her husband David, of Newark, with whom she lived, Faye Anderson of Middletown and Deborah Rich and Robert Dukes of Greenwood; a son, John Fitzgerald of Lewes; two stepdaughters, Betty Dilworth and her husband Richard of Norristown, Pa. and Grace Jackson of Eagleville, Pa.; a sister-in-law, Sara Steinhower of Pottstown, Pa.; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and a great-grandchild to be born in October.
Memorial services were held at Gracelawn Memorial Park, New Castle.
Elsie (Valis) Fausner,
retired from Hofstra University
Elsie (Valis) Fausner, 96, of Georgetown, died Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at Harrison House Senior Living in Georgetown, surrounded by her loved ones.
Mrs. Fausner was born August 5, 1908 in New York City, N.Y. to the late Anna “Tichy” and Prokop Valis.
Mrs. Fausner lived in New York most of her life and retired from her job as a matron at Hofstra University after 25 years. She was a long time member of St. Martha’s Catholic Church in Uniondale, N.Y., the area where she raised her family. She moved to Georgetown in 2002 to reside with her daughter Dorothy Leidner.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Charles Christian Fausner and 11 of her siblings.
Besides her daughter Dorothy, Mrs. Fausner is survived by her son, Charles Fausner of Carle Place, N.Y.; her granddaughter, Dorothy Hludzinski and husband Robert of Milton; grandsons, John Leidner and wife Barbara of Selden, N.Y., James Leidner of Georgetown, and Christopher Fausner of Austin, Texas; her great-grandchildren, Denise Ali, Thomas Hludzinski, Diane Leidner and Michael Leidner; her great-great-grandsons Ryan, Brandon and Shawn Ali; and her sister, Eleanor Rabe of Bayside, N.Y.
A mass of Christian burial was celebrated at St. Martha’s Roman Catholic Church, Uniondale, N.Y. with interment following at Holy Rood Catholic cemetery , Westbury, N.Y.
