Doris M. Wynes, 80
Milford Stitching retiree
Doris M. Wynes of Milford died Saturday, July 9, 2005, in Bayhealth Medical Center-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 80.
Mrs. Wynes was born in Lewes, daughter of the late John C. and Emma J. (Joseph) Mitchell.
She worked for many years at Milford Stitching and retired from Acme Markets in Milford at age 70.
Mrs. Wynes was an avid collector of giraffes and chickens and was a NASCAR fan.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur E. Wynes, in 2003.
She is survived by three sons and two daughters-in-law, Dave and Joan Wynes of Bridgeville, Theodore Wynes of Lincoln and Kevin and Joyce Wynes of Dover; four sisters, Hazel Zimmerman of Milton, Elizabeth Coverdale of Greenwood, Bernice Rogers of Waterford, Pa., and Gladys Austin of Milford; a brother, John Mitchell of Harrington; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be private. Arrangements by Lofland Funeral Home, Milford.
Edgar V. Adkins Sr.,

Edgar V. Adkins Sr. of Lewes passed away from complications related to Alzheimer’s Disease at Autumn House in Viera, Fla., on July 6. He was 89.
He was born the eighth of nine children to Lucy Ellen and Isaac William Ryder Adkins in Snow Hill, Maryland, on September 26, 1915. He was vice president of his class and excelled in soccer at his high school in Princess Anne, Md. In 1937 he married Geraldine Taylor, and they soon settled in Lewes, where he owned and operated E.V. Adkins Oil Company for 45 years.
As he and his wife raised their family, he was an active member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Methodist Men, Lewes Rotary Club, and Jefferson Lodge 15 AF & AM. In addition to running his business, he was an avid investor in real estate and the stock market.
Family was the most important priority in his life. As his children were growing up, he spent most weekends riding horses or water skiing with them and taking his wife and children to visit extended family throughout Delaware and Maryland.
Edgar was predeceased by his wife of 50 years, Geraldine Taylor Adkins, in 1987 and his daughter, Elizabeth Ellen Adkins in 1947. He was also predeceased by his parents, all eight of his brothers and sisters, his daughter-in-law, Ruth Adkins, and his grandson, Jerry Adkins.
He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Nancy Adkins; his son, Edgar V. Adkins Jr. and his wife, Berta, of Milton; his daughter, Charlotte Adkins Bastian and her husband Jim of Lewes; and his son, James W. Adkins and his wife Karin of Harbeson. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Dwayne Adkins; Susan Adkins Layton and her husband, George; Catherine Bastian McCollough and her husband, Andy; Christine Bastian Gillan and her husband, Dave; Jay Bastian and his wife, Jennifer; Drew Adkins; Jamin Adkins; and Kaitlyn Adkins. He had nine great-grandchildren: Mary Adkins; Summer, Easton, and Rachel McCollough; Taylor, Grant, and Ross Gillan; and Molly and Jake Bastian. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Nellie Adkins, of Melbourne, Fla., his brother-in-law James Taylor and his wife, Bette, of Salisbury, Md., and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation was at Bethel United Methodist Church in Lewes, July 10. A memorial service was held at the church July 11. Burial will be private in Salisbury, Md.

Daniel W. Mullin,
World War II veteran
Daniel W. “Grumps” Mullin, 83, of Wilmington, passed away Wednesday, July 6, 2005, at Christiana Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
He was born and raised in Wilmington, the son of the late Charles I. and Lula J. Mullin. He attended Wilmington public schools and graduated from Wilmington High School.
He served with the 42nd U.S. Naval Construction Battalion (Seabees) in World War II, stationed in the Aleutian Islands. Dan was a carpenter by trade learning his craft at Healy Brothers in Wilmington. He later was employed by Hercules, where he retired as foreman of the carpenter shop after 42 years of dedicated service. He was a member of St. John the Beloved Church since 1963.
Mullin is survived by his bride of 58 years, Mary Ogden Mullin; his daughters, Margaret Mullin Abbott and her husband, Donnie, of Marshallton, and Marie Mullin Byrne and her husband, Michael P. Byrne, of Wilmington; his son, Mark W. Mullin and his wife, Josie, of Rehoboth Beach; and his grandchildren, Marisa Abbott Rice and her husband, Philip T. Rice of Berne, NY, Zacharias H. Abbott and Matthew M. Byrne of Wilmington.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. John the Beloved Church, July 11. Interment was in All Saints cemetery.

James “Junnie” Barnes,
Ocean City employee
James “Junnie” Barnes of Georgetown died Monday, July 4, 2004, in Coastal Hospice at the Lake, Salisbury, Md. He was 56.
He was born in Wilson, N.C., son of the late James Williams and Gladys Mae Barnes.
He worked in waste management for the town of Ocean City, Md., for 25 years, retiring in 2004.
He is survived by his devoted friend of 29 years, Annie L. Stephens of Georgetown; two sons, Dion Stephens of Rehoboth Beach and James Barnes III of Georgetown; three daughters, Levette Stephens and Gladys Stephens, both of Georgetown and Renee Barnes of Bronx, N.Y.; two brothers, Jerome Barnes of Wilson and Moses L. Battle of Bronx; a sister, Brenda L. Barnes of Milton; a special friend, Leslie H. Collick of Snow Hill, Md.; 12 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were at Watson Funeral Home in Millsboro, July 9. Pastor Richard Jennings will officiate.
Burial will be in the New Bethel cemetery , Berlin, Md.
Frances P. Garey,

Frances P. Garey of Milford died Thursday, July 7, 2005, in Heritage of Milford. She was 83.
She was born on July 13, 1921, in Milford, daughter of the late Charles and Bertha Stevenson Pearson.
She was employed for 42 years with Peoples Bank of Harrington, now Wilmington Trust, as a teller and later promoted to vice president. She retired in 1991.
She was an active member of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Milford and a member of the Harrington Moose Lodge 534.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Rix M. Garey Jr. in 1985; two brothers, Charles Pearson and Orville Pearson; and two sisters, Jeannette Hall and Ellen Gohn.
She is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, C. Rix and Brenda Garey of Beaumont, Texas, and Bruce A. Garey of Rehoboth Beach; two grandchildren, Angela L. Clinton of Houston, Texas, and Susan M. Garey of Beaumont; two great-grandchildren, Posie M. Clinton V and Jack Wilson Clinton, both of Houston; a niece, June Sapp of Milford; three nephews, Ronald Wix and his wife, Anne, of Clermont, Fla., Ron Simonin of McClain, Va., and Bill Pearson of Camden; and a special other, her son, Bruce’s dog, Onyx.
Services were held at Rogers Funeral Home Milford. Burial will be in Barratts Chapel cemetery , Frederica.

Betty May Clifton of Milton died Thursday, July 7, 2005, in her home. She was 71.
Mrs. Clifton was born in Georgetown, daughter of the late Frank L. and Martha LeCates Holston.
She was a homemaker, a loving wife, mother and grandmother and enjoyed gardening, flower arranging and country music.
She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Otis Joseph Clifton; a daughter, Terri Clifton; a brother, Harry Holston; and a grandson, Rhett Clifton Malone.
Services were July 11 in the Chapel of Short Funeral Services in Milton. Burial will be in Henlopen Memorial Park, Milton.

Bobby Andrew Farrell Sr.
U.S. Army veteran
Bobby Andrew Farrell Sr. of Harrington died Thursday, July 7, 2005, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital, Milford. He was 60.
Mr. Farrell was born in Wilmington, son of the late George Dear and Pauline Farrell.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Mr. Farrell was a truck driver for Tidewater Express in Crisfield, Md., for 30 years.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, George Dear.
He is survived by two sons, Bobby Farrell Jr. of Dover and Michael A. Farrell of Harrington; his companion, Brenda Farrell; two grandchildren, Kayla Farrell and Faith Farrell; three brothers, Charles Dear of Slaughter Beach, Kenny Dear of Harrington and Chris Dear of Milford; and five sisters, Cheryl Clausser of Milford, Ruth Ann Armour of Harrington, Pam Pase of Milford, Mabel Johnson of Milton and Hope Berter of Florida.
Services were July 11 at the Chapel of Berry-Short Funeral Home in Milford. Burial will be in Delaware Veterans cemetery , Millsboro.
Lillian Coverdale Straw,
retired administrative worker
Lillian Coverdale Straw of South Dennis, Mass., and formerly of Lewes, died peacefully Monday, June 13, 2005, in Eagle Pond Rehabilitation and Living Center, South Dennis, where she had lived for 15 months. She was 97.
Mrs. Straw was born Jan. 19, 1908, in Lewes, daughter of the late George and Clara Coverdale.
She graduated from Lewes High School in 1925.
Mrs. Straw, for the next 17 years, worked for the Sussex Trust Co., in various departments. After marrying in 1944, she and her husband moved to Gaithersburg, Md., where they had an antique shop, and later to Bethesda, Md., where she served 13 years as an administrative assistant with the National Institutes of Health. They retired in 1967 and bought a home in South Dennis on Cape Cod, where they spent the rest of their lives.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert C. “Bob” Straw, originally of Chevy Chase, Md., in 1986; and two sisters, Marion C. Graves and Helena C. Macintire, both of whom had lived in Lewes.
She is survived by a sister, C. Emily Burton of Lewes; four nieces; and three nephews.
Graveside services were July 10 in the Bethel Methodist cemetery
on Savannah Road in Lewes, at which time the cremains of both Lillian and Bob were interred.

Gertrude MacMasters, 88, passed away at the Silver Lake Center in Dover, July 4, 2005.
Gertrude was born in Philadelphia, Pa., to Harold and Louetta Shankland. She had a career in fashion merchandising, working for Braunsteins in Wilmington and retiring from John Wanamaker in Alapocas. She was a skilled cook and enjoyed entertaining. She also loved playing bridge.
She was predeceased by her husband, George G. MacMasters Sr.; and a sister, Genevieve Walker. She is survived by her son, G. Greer MacMasters of Rehoboth Beach; and grandchildren, Deborah Milner of Detroit, Mich., Wayne MacMasters of Newport News, Va., Linda Farrall-Smith of Newark and Elaine Balcerak of Dover. She is also survived by eight beloved great grandchildren; a cousin, Betty Kirkwood of Fla.; and a niece, Elaine Benke of Pa.
A memorial service was held at the chapel of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Wilmington, July 11, 2005. Family and friends are invited. Burial will be private in Forest Hills cemetery
in Philadelphia, Pa.

William J. Baker
Navy Veteran
William J. Baker of Millsboro died Wednesday, July 6, 2005 in the St. Francis Hospital in Wilmington. He was 82.
Mr. Baker served in the Naval Reserves during World War II.
As a member of the Indian River Yacht Club, he is remembered for loving to be on the water.
Mr. Baker was a retired pier supervisor for the Getty Oil and Refinery Company.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John T. and Helen (Stewart) Baker; and brother, Jack Baker.
Mr. Baker was survived by his wife of 50 years, Ann D. Baker; two sons, William J. Baker and his wife Linda of Middletown, and Thom Baker of New York, N.Y.; a daughter Denise Ann Sherwood and her husband, Jeffery of New Castle, brother Richard Baker; and five grandchildren, Kelly, Jeffrey, and Matthew Sherwood, and Brittney and William J. Baker, III.
A mass of Christian burial was held July 11 at Mary Mother of Peace Catholic Church in Millsboro. Interment was at St. George’s Episcopal cemetery
near Lewes.

Dorothy M. Jones
Devoted mother
Dorothy M. Jones, 81, died Wednesday, July 6, 2005, at Crozer Chester Medical Center in Upland, Pa.
Dot was born in Chester to James and Anne Cane Hamilton where she was reared and educated. She attended Eddystone High School. She was a woman who devoted her life to her home and family. She had no greater joy than to teach about life and love to her grandchildren. She enjoyed sewing, jigsaw puzzles and crafts. Dot had wonderful zest for life itself. She was a member of the Marcus Hook Senior Citizens and a former member of the Marcus Hook Fire House Ladies Auxiliary.
Dot was the wife of the late William B. Jones, who died in 1971, the mother of the late Eddie Jones, who died in 1984 and the sister of the late Abert Quail, who died in 1971.
She is survived by three daughters, Betty Anne Testa of north Wilmington; Nancy Burgess of Marcus Hook, Pa., and Maryanne MacFadyen of north Wilmington; one son, William B. Jones of Rehoboth Beach; one sister, Elizabeth Loretta of Marcus Hook, Pa.; seven grandchildren; and one great grand-daughter.
Her funeral service and interment will be private.
