Nancy S. Hanna,
devoted wife, mother
Nancy S. Hanna of Newport and Long Neck, went to be with the Lord on her 89th birthday, Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2005.
Nancy who was a homemaker, also worked previously for the Town of Newport. She was a very active member of Peniel United Methodist Church. Nancy enjoyed handcrafts, the shore, time with her family and friends, and studying God’s word. She was a devoted wife and mother, and lived her life as a witness for our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ. Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; and two sons, Tom and Jay. Survivors include a son, Gary of Newport; brothers, Fred Smith of Lewes and Richard Smith of Greenville; three grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 13, at Peniel United Methodist Church. The family will greet relatives and friends immediately following the service. Burial will be private.
Walter R. “Bud” Snyder,
World War II veteran
Walter “Bud” Snyder of Newark passed away Sept. 8, 2005, at Christiana Hospital.
Formerly of Burlington, N.J., Bud served with the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He was involved in the European Theatre of Operations as a ball turret gunner in the 511th Bomb Squadron of the 351st Bomb Group. He was missing in action from Jan. 11, 1944, until May 13, 1944, on the way to the target at Aaschlebben, Germany. Bud enjoyed frequenting the Delaware Park racetrack.
Born in Lancaster, Pa., on May 18, 1924, he leaves behind daughters, Donna Carver and her husband, Bob, of Lewes, Carolyn Griffiths and her husband, Jim, of LaCrescenta, Calif., Patricia Snyder, also of California; and stepdaughter, Joyce Steinmacher of Wilmington. Other survivors include a number of grandchildren and great grandchildren including Tiffany Carver of Milford, U.S. Marine Staff Sgt. Frank Borkowski, stationed in Okinawa, Japan, and Jeremy and Jason Griffiths, both of California; sisters, Dolores Suessegger of Burlington, N.J., and Viola Swart of Florida; and a number of nieces and nephews, also survive him.
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 14, at Cornerstone United Methodist Church, 3135 Summit Bridge Rd., (Rt. 896), Bear, DE 19701. Interment will follow at 2 p.m., in the Delaware Veterans Memorial cemetery , 2465 Chesapeake City Rd., Bear.
Judd P. Hart,
equipment operator
Judd P. Hart, 35, of Millsboro died Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2005, in the University of Maryland Hospital in Baltimore, following a motorcycle accident on Labor Day.
Mr. Hart was born in Reading, Pa., son of Eddie P. and Ginger M. (Steiner) Hart of Laureldale, Pa.
He was a graduate of Gov. Mifflin High School, class of 1987. Mr. Hart was employed for the past year and a half as a heavy equipment operator by George and Lynch in Dover.
He is survived by a stepson, Dylan B. Drago of Muhlenburg Township, Pa.; two daughters, Delaney L. Hart of Mertztown, Pa., and Riley J. Steer of Millsboro; a son, Dalton P. Hart of Mertztown; his parents, Eddie P. and Ginger M. (Steiner) Hart of Laureldale, Pa.; a brother, Shane P. Hart of Millsboro; his maternal grandmother, Barbara Steiner of Millsboro; his maternal great-grandmother, Marion Sweitzer of Millsboro; and his paternal grandmother, Martha Smith of Birdsboro, Pa.
Services were held Sept. 11 at Joseph D. Giles Funeral Home Inc. and Crematorium, Mohnton, Pa. Burial was in Mohnsville cemetery
in Mohnton.
J. Howard Hamstra,
retired lawyer
J. Howard Hamstra was born April 7, 1917, in Rochester, N.Y. His parents were the late Mary Hollis Hamstra and the Rev. John Hamstra.
Mr. Hamstra graduated on May 17, 1934, from Bridgewater High School in Bridgewater, S.D. He attended Yankton College in Yankton, S.D., and graduated cum laude, June 13, 1938, with a bachelor of arts degree.
Mr. Hamstra went to graduate school for law at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., and graduated on June 14, 1941, with the juris doctor degree.
J. Howard Hamstra was granted license to practice by the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of the State of New York Jan. 2, 1943.
He accepted a law position with Root, Clarke, Buckner & Ballantine in New York, N.Y., Sept. 1, 1941, and became a member of the Law Department of Pan American World Airways Jan. 1, 1946. On Dec. 20, 1971, President Najeeb E. Halaby named J. Howard Hamstra, vice president law, as acting general counsel pending the board of directors’ electing a new general counsel. The board of directors confirmed Mr. Hamstra as vice president, general counsel of Pan America in March 1972.
Mr. Hamstra served in this capacity, as well as secretary of the board of directors, until his retirement in 1981.
Mr. Hamstra was elected to the board of trustees of Dowling College in Oakdale, N.Y., April 3, 1973, and he was elected chairman of the board of trustees April 19, 1977, where he served until his resignation June 23, 1981.
Mr. Hamstra was a member of the Southward Ho Country Club, Babylon Yacht Club and South Bay Cruising Club, all of Long Island, N.Y., and the Sky Club and Wings Club and the New York Bar Association, all of New York City. J. Howard Hamstra purchased the Tarten 27 sailboat “Slim” No. 62 in 1965 and raced from 1966 through 1990, participating in 36 races in 1989 and 37 races in 1990 on Great South Bay, N.Y.
Mr. Hamstra sailed in the PanAm Clipper Cup Yacht Races in Hawaii in 1978 and 1980 on the Maxi Yacht “Sorcery,” and sailed the “Round the State of Hawaii” Yacht Races in 1982 on the Maxi Yacht “Condor.”
Mr. Hamstra sailed the Buenos Aires to Rio de Janeiro Yacht Races in 1979, the Newport to Bermuda Yacht Rave in 1980, and the Southern Ocean Racing Circuit Races from St. Petersburg to Ft. Lauderdale in 1980, all on the Maxi Yacht “Ondine.”
In 1990 J. Howard Hamstra won the 1990 Non Spinnaker Class Championship races of the South Bay Cruising Club.
Mr. Hamstra is survived by stepson Frank R. Palmer of Rehobeth Beach. He was preceded in death by his wife Grace Elizabeth “Betty” Hamstra.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the American Red Cross “Katrina Relief Fund”, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date in New York.
Charles V. Andreotti,
Milton resident
Charles V. Andreotti, 73, of Milton, died Sept. 3, 2005, at Bayhealth Medical Center in Milford. Mr. Andreotti was a graduate of Peekskill Military Academy, where he matriculated to the University of Maryland. A veteran of the Korean War, he later attended the University of Pennsylvania. Mr. Andreotti is survived by his wife, Ruth; his daughter, Lark; Drew, his son and two grandsons, Jacob and Ben. Interment will be in California, announced at a later date. Local arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium at the Atkins-Lodge Chapel in Lewes. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made in Mr, Andreotti’s memory to the donor’s favorite charity.
Douglas B. Bennett,
Former Lucent employee
Douglas B. Bennett Sr., 57, of Lewes, died Tuesday, August 30, 2005, at his residence. Mr. Bennett was born April 11, 1948 in Cumberland, Md., the son of Willard and Margaret (Pase) Bennett of Berkeley Springs, W. Va. Mr. Bennett was employed for 35 years with Lucent Technologies. He retired three years ago, moving to Lewes from New Hampshire. He enjoyed the ocean. In addition to his parents, Mr. Bennett is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Eleanor Louise Bennett; two sons, Brian Keith Bennett and Douglas B. Bennett Jr., both of Lewes; two grandsons, Christopher and Jacob Woetzel both of Virginia; and a sister Sandra Messick of Berkeley Springs, W. Va. A memorial service at St. Jude The Apostle Church will be scheduled at a later date. Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium at the Atkins-Lodge Chapel in Lewes are handling arrangements.
Virginia F. McSweeney,
loving mother, wife
Virginia Frances McSweeney, 82, of Rehoboth Beach, died Tuesday, Sept. 6, 2005, at Lewes Convalescent Center in Lewes. Mrs. McSweeney was born Oct. 19, 1922, in Georgetown, to the late Wilbur and Frances King.
Mrs. McSweeney was known to many as a very giving and caring person. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband Joseph Francis McSweeney in 1979 and a daughter Marlene Church in 1981. She is survived by two daughters, Karla McSweeney of Wilmington, and Karen Baker of Seaford; three grandchildren, Elisa Stitcher of Laurel, John Marley Bernard III of Philadelphia, and Kendall Dereskewicz of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and two great-grandchildren.
All services are private. Arrangements are being handled by Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel in Lewes.

Ruth Wetherall,
retired teacher
Ruth (Warrington) Wetherall, 87, of Newark, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005 in Newark.
Mrs. Wetherall was a graduate of the University of Delaware. She retired as an elementary school teacher in the Rehoboth-Lewes area.
She was preceded in death by her first husband of 26 years, Norman C. Coleman and their daughter Peggy; and a second husband of 16 years, Robert Wetherall.
Services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 9, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Atkins-Lodge Chapel, 16961 Kings Highway, Lewes. Pastor Jack Abel will officiate. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Barratt’s Chapel cemetery
in Frederica.

Bridget Beam,
retired school worker
Bridget Beam, age 61, died at home in Middletown on Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, after a short illness.
Born the youngest of five sisters in Blantyre, Scotland, to the late Lawrence Cain and Bridget Higgins Cain, she was adopted by an aunt and uncle shortly after the death of her mother and raised in Scotland for 16 years before moving to New Castle. She was a homemaker. While a homemaker, she took part-time jobs at Our Lady of Fatima as a substitute teacher, gym teacher and lunchroom lady. She worked in various housekeeping positions later in life until her illness.
She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Lawrence and Bridget Cain; and her adopted mother and father, James and Margaret Cain. Also preceding her were her brothers, James Cain and Edward Cain; and her sister, May Shankie. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Beam of Newark; her daughter and son-in-law, with whom she lived, Elizabeth and Karl Kraus of Middletown; her son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Tabatha Beam of Middletown; and her daughter and son-in-law, Bridget and Raymond Strano of Newark. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Annie and Elaine Brejwa, Tommy, Tyler, Trent, Kira, Takoda and Kayla Beam, and Raymond, Trista and Libby Strano; two stepchildren, Shannon and Stacey Kraus; and a step-grandson, Dylan Sutton. She is also survived by a very special friend, Frank Holsworth of Lewes. Also surviving are several brothers and sisters including Eric Cain of Middletown, George Cain of Camden, Helen McGuire of new Jersey, and Isabella Chatham, Grace O’Neill, Margaret McGraw and Isabella Whitters, all of Scotland.
The funeral service will be at noon, Friday, Sept. 9, at the Daniels & Hutchison Funeral Home, 212 N. Broad St., Middletown, where family and friends may call from 11 a.m. to noon at the funeral Home. Interment will be in Old Drawyers cemetery
near Odessa.

Joan Ann Donovan,

Joan Ann Donovan, 58, of Georgetown, passed away Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005 at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford.
Mrs. Donovan was born June 29, 1947 in Milford, to the late Leonard Edwin and Mary Frances (Stevenson) Carter.
Mrs. Donovan was a registered nurse. She worked at the Stockley Center in Georgetown for 15 years, retiring in 1985. She enjoyed sewing, camping and car shows.
She is survived by her loving husband of 37 years, James L. Donovan, one daughter, Rebecca McKenzie of Georgetown; one granddaughter, Zoey McKenzie also of Georgetown; and her sister, Deborah A. Taylor, of Hebron, Md.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Sept. 9, at Parsell Funeral Homes, Dodd-Carey Chapel, 307 N. Bedford Street, Georgetown. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at Sandhill cemetery , Milton/Georgetown Road, Georgetown.

Robert Irvin Moore,
retired from DuPont
Robert Irvin Moore, 67, of Harrington, died Sunday, Sept. 4, 2005, in his home.
Mr. Moore was born in Dover, son of Lester S. and Madalene M. Moore of Harrington.
He graduated from the Harrington High School in 1955.
After high school, he served his country proudly in the United States Marine Corps. He relished his time in the service and maintained the level of discipline and character learned in the Marines throughout his entire life.
Mr. Moore worked for the DuPont Co. in Seaford as a mechanic, retiring in 1996.
He was a handyman and loved to help his family whenever he was asked. He built his own home and loved to work with wood, and did his own welding. Whatever task he started, he kept at it until it was completed, he never left a task undone. He also loved to garden, loved gospel music and enjoyed playing his steel guitar. He will be remembered as a great storyteller who captivated whatever audience he was telling a story to with his great voice. He especially enjoyed reminiscing of his days in the Marine Corps and his fellow soldiers, and his earlier years. He will be remembered as a kind and generous father, and will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
Mr. Moore was a past member of the Harrington Moose, a past member of the Harrington Fire Co. and was active and attended the Pilgrim Chapel of Harrington.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jane Hughes Moore.
He is survived by his wife, Cynde P. Moore of Harrington; a son and a daughter-in-law, Steven H. and Paula R. Moore of Harrington; his parents, Lester S. and Madalene M. Moore of Harrington; two sisters and two brothers-in-law, Ruth and Robert Herring of Locust Grove, Va. and Betty and Everett Kennedy of Sudlersville; three stepchildren, Wayne A. Eakin and his wife, Melissa of Harrington, Matthew D. Eakin of Nashville, Tenn. and Paula Pulcinella of Lewes; three stepgrandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held in the Pilgrim Chapel, Del. 14, Harrington, with burial will be in the Hollywood cemetery , Harrington.
Minnie Loretta Parsons,

Minnie Loretta Parsons, 69, of Bridgeville, passed away Thursday, Sept. 1, 2005 at Peninsula General Medical Center, Salisbury, Md. Mrs. Parsons was born May 30, 1936 in Georgetown to the late Clarence and Mildred (West) Joines.
Mrs. Parsons had been a caregiver to children in the Bridgeville area. She enjoyed her family, friends and grandchildren. She also enjoyed music and dancing.
Mrs. Parsons is survived by her sons, Adam L. Parsons of Tolland, Conn. and Eugene Thomas E. Parsons of Laurel; one daughter, Gwendolyn Barrow of Salisbury, Md.; one sister, Elizabeth, of Greenwood; 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Sept. 7, at Bridgeville cemetery , Bridgeville. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 6, at Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Hardesty Chapel, 202 Laws Street, Bridgeville.

Russell M. Bradley Sr.,
ret. DelDOT supervisor
Russell M. Bradley Sr., 95, of Lincoln died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005, in Milford Center, Milford.
Mr. Bradley was born in Federalsburg, Md., son of the late William Oliver and Emma Schultz Russell Bradley.
He was a supervisor for the Delaware Department of Transportation in Georgetown, retiring in 1975 after 30 years of service. He also worked for Brown P. Thawley in Milford.
After retirement, he enjoyed fishing, gardening and working in his shop, repairing any kind of motor from lawn mower to vehicle. He loved working with his hands and had made several woodworking projects to give to his family and friends. He was always willing to help others, lending a hand to those who crossed his path, whether it was family, friend or stranger.
Mr. Bradley, although unable to be active in the church for the past several years, was a member of the Lincoln United Methodist Church, where he had been very active in many capacities including Sunday school teacher. He had also been active in the Lincoln Community Center.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Lavina Mae Ingram Bradley; a brother, Severn Bradley; and five sisters, Julia Wheatley, Edna Hackett, Golda Whittington, Emma Hurly and Mary Ann Payne.
He is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, Russell M. Jr. and Nancy Bradley and Stephen F. and Pat Bradley, all of Lincoln; three granddaughters and their husbands, Sharon and Mike Purnell of Rehoboth Beach, Sheila and Ronnie Sharp of Milford and Kelly and Tom Pepper of Milton; four great-grandchildren and their spouses, Hillary Hayes, Matthew and Joann Purnell and Jennifer and Paul Caras IV, all of Milford and T. Brandon Pepper of Milton; five great-great-grandchildren, Mason Hayes, Carter Hayes, Lexus Purnell, Alyssa Purnell and Rylee Caras; four step-grandchildren; eight step-great-grandchildren; and close family friend, George Riley of Lincoln. Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Berry-Short Funeral Home, 119 NW Front St., Milford, where friends may call two hours earlier. Burial will be in Slaughter Neck cemetery , Milford.
